Editorial Review

The first thing we look for in a table saw--portable or otherwise--is an accurate, smooth-working fence, and the telescoping fence on DeWalt's 10-inch portable table saw impressed us immediately. Fully extended, the fence delivers a 24-1/2-inch rip capacity, letting you cut to the center of a 4-by-8-foot sheet, while the rack-and-pinion design lets you make microadjustments fast and accurately. We also liked how the fence rides on both the front and back rails so that it's parallel to the blade at all times. The telescoping rails retract, too--when the job's done, the saw is easy and safe to transport.

Like most 10-inch portable saws, DeWalt's has a 3-1/8-inch depth capacity at 90 degrees and a 2-1/4-inch capacity at 45. The 15 amp motor cranks plenty of torque and doesn't lag when cutting hardwood or pressure-treated stock. Performance aside, DeWalt clearly also kept safety in mind when designing this saw. Its oversize on/off switch is positioned so you can easily bump it off with your knee if you get into trouble making a cut. The arbor on Dewalt's saw also has the capacity for a full dado stack. Add to that the saw's dust-collection hookup and sturdy steel stand, and you've got a portable table saw that can hold its own in the shop. --Jon Groebner ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars This saw is so awesome !!
After using this saw for only a few hours, I am so in love with it !! It is well worth the money. I do think that for the price Dewalt should include the outfeed support. I also would have preferred a 4" dust port, but hey, you can't have everything.
The rack and pinion fence is right on the money. Dewalt has done it again. They make good stuff !!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great saw
It's light, easy to use and the rip fence on gear tracks is excellent. No place to wind the cord is kinda crappy, and the blade angle adjustment slides rather than having something like the knob used for the rip fence for adjustments. The frying pan coating on top doesn't last long if you don't wipe it down with some WD-40 once in a while. I've used it as a jobsite saw and to build cabinets, speaker boxes, cut plexiglass, etc. It's not a $1500 cabinet saw but if you screw a sheet of plywood to a couple sawhorses as a outfeed table and take some care in your cuts, it works awesome for something one person can carry.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic saw for its class
I've had this saw for a year now.I have a small shop and didn't want to sacrifice the permanent square footage for a stationary cabinet model. So I was only looking for a portable...but a good portable.I am not a professional in any trade, but am a very seasoned DIY'er, particularly with woodworking.I've made a few pieces of furniture with the saw and I don't regret its purchase at all. Here are my thoughts on this item:

POSITIVES

1) Portability, portability, portability.I usually have it set up on the leg stand in my shop, buy have needed to transport it mutliple times either inside my house or to other sites I worked at.

2) The 15 amp motor is impressively beefy, considering it is a portable, and cuts quite nicely through any wood I've tried so far (including oak and birch).

3) The folding legs are easy to set up and EXTREMELY sturdy when the saw is on and properly bolted on (bolts are not included though...)

4) The fence is great.Easily adjusts and stays true and parallel (a minor flaw though...see below).

NEGATIVES

1) When saw dust gets built up on the pinion gears for the fence adjusting mechanism, the gear(s) sometimes slip over one tooth and the fence gets out of parallel. However, you'll easily know when it happens (if you don't notice it by eye, you'll quickly notice the wood binding up in the blade!)However, it is a quick and easy fix by hand to put it back parallel...and impetus to keep your tools clean.

2) The blade guard is relatively cheaply built and a nuisance. Although it is a cardinal sin, I never use the guard.

3) The open ended arbor wrench stripped open a little bit after a few months of moderate use.I switched a lot between a ripping, cross cutting and dado blades when making two pieces of furniture. The mouth on the open ended wrench seemed to have stretched out a little and would slip off the arbor when I was trying to tighten/loosen the arbor nut. After banging up my knuckles a few times, I ordered a new wrench from the DeWalt service center near me (only costs about $2).Unfortunately, a normal open-ended wrench is too wide to fit in...you need to use the thin DeWalt wrench.

4) The combo blade that comes with it is relatively cheap. It cuts fine through most woods, but leaves blade marks. Also, there is more splintering/tearing than I would like when cutting through plywood.I highly recommend splurging on a Forrest Woodworker II blade and dampener.Flawless cuts on this was with the Forrest blade.

Overall, I absolutely love this tool. The price seems high (and sort of is considering it is portable), but the DeWalt quality is worth it compared to the much cheaper Ryobi and Makita models. The negatives I have listed are fairly minor; mere nuisances with easy fixes.Be sure to check the fine tuning of the fence width ruler and parallelness of the fence.I had to tweak them a little before I first used the saw to get everything just right. If you need portability and want to save space but don't want to sacrifice a lot of the benefits of a cabinet saw, this tool is a must! ... The heart of any table saw is the fence, and DeWalt's smooth-sliding, unique double-cam action fence locks down tight and always travels parallel to the blade. The fence face shifts forward, too, giving you the option--if a cut requires it--of extra fence area in front of the blade. The fence can also drop flush to the table for ripping laminates.

In fact, this saw is loaded with great, user-friendly features. There's an oversize, left-side on/off switch that lets you bump the saw off with your knee if you run into trouble while making a cut. It's exactly this sort of attention to detail that wins a lot of people over to DeWalt products. The blade-elevation crank is also set lower on this saw than most, so there's plenty of hand clearance for making blade-height adjustments. Again, this might seem like a minor touch, but think about how frustrating it is to bang your knuckles on a table bottom every time you want to change the blade height. This table's sturdy metal bevel scale is nice, too; it's easy to read and much burlier than the mere stickers found on a lot of other saws.

The saw's inboard 1-3/4-horsepower induction motor is quiet, cuts down on vibration, and makes this saw considerably more space-efficient than outboard motor saws, a feature you'll appreciate if you work in a small shop or have to take your saw through doorways. And at 254 pounds, this saw has plenty of heft, a big cast-iron trunnion, and a sturdy steel base. There's also an integrated dust port if you want to hook the saw up to a dust collector. Available in a few different configurations, this model--the DW746XB, with its 30-inch fence and free mobile base--is a smart buy for a woodworker with a small shop. --Jon Groebner ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Table Saw
I just got back into woodworking recently and purchased this table saw.I have a friend who is a contractor and he said it is very important to have a solid table saw with a good fence for accurate cuts.I did a lot of research and found this to be the best saw.It has a wide arbor mouth that makes it easy to change the blade. It is left tilt which is more stable, and the motor is induction type, which is the safest and least likely to burn out, and the on/off switch is right next to your left knee so you can turn off the table saw easily after a cut.

I've used this saw for miter projects by adjusting the blade to 45 degrees and they've been dead accurate. You really don't need an expensive Biesmeyer fence or other aftermarket fence. The one that comes with this saw is more than sufficient. You should get a different miter for cross-cuts.I recommend the Rockler adjustable miter. It's more than good enough for a hobbyist (no need for sliding tables or expensive Incra miter). You will need to get some decent saw blades.I picked up a Freud ripping blade and cross-cut blade and they've been fantastic. You'll also need a set of dado heads.I got a nice set for about $80.With this I would strongly suggest the dado head arbor plate, or you can use a zero clearance plate - I did this and used 1/2" dado head setup which is the one I use the most. This makes for extremely smooth dados and rabbets.

I also highly recommend the mobile base that is available.I did not find it necessary to purchase the cast iron extensions. The sheet metal extensions are fine for me.I'm just a hobbyist and don't have the extra space anyway.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice Saw but not very Portable
I have owned my DeWalt Woodworkers Saw for about two years now.If you plan on moving this saw from job to job like a contractors saw then think again. It may be called a hybrid but it is heavy enough to require at least two people to move it with all the rails and wings removed. It is lighter than a Unisaw that takes four people to move.
I replaced my oldDelta Contractor saw that the roofer broke by throwing a 10' 2x6 off the roof endo. It broke the cast iron table in half.
That saw was old and tired anyway.I had been using a Unisaw for the past three years for a job saw doing fine woodworking on high end homes. When I first used the DeWalt I noticed that it did not have the power of the Unisaw but it did have a precision fenceand a smooth vibration free feel similar to the Unisaw.
I had to shim the fence a hair to make it flat.Squaring the fence to the table was an odd procedure but seemed to work and the fence has remained square since then. The fence locks down securely without deflection at least as good as the Biesenmeyer fence.A nice feature is that the face of the fence can drop down to the table for ripping thin sheet goods so the sheets won't slip under the fence.I have been using the saw for all my finish carpentry in several fine new homes.I also use it for heavy ripping of salvaged wood that I use for exterior trim.I am very happy with this saw.Considering that I have to move it occasionally to a job it is a good comprimise between a heavy cabinet saw and a contractors saw.It can be hooked up to a vacuum for dust collection with success and that is not an option with a contractors saw.I think DeWalt has listened to woodworkers and came up with a lot of innovative features that make this saw a pleasure to use.

4-0 out of 5 stars A few gripes, but I would still buy it again!
As with most woodworkers, I thought long and hard before buying this saw.I have owned mine now for about 4 months, and have been using it frequently, so I feel I can make a credible review.
My saw arrived quickly and packaged perfectly.Everything was intact and went together quickly and easily. The instructions leave a bit to be desired, but they are adequate. The fence was tough to adjust, more on that later. The table is flat, and the stamped steel extensions do their job, but I am going to upgrade to the cast wings soon.

The fence. And here's the rub.As noted by other negative reviewer's, a saw is only as good as its fence.Apparently Dewalt made some of these with bum fences, so if you call dewalt with a fence complaint, they will immediately offer to send you a replacement for free, which I did.The first fence had a slight bow in it with the middle pushing in toward the blade slightly.I'm talking about maybe 1/64th over the full 31" length. Also, the way the fence is designed, you are supposed to square the fence to the table by pushing it sideways and tightening the torx screws.Well, in order to get mine square, I had to push pretty hard, but I did eventually get it squared to the table...at least when I checked beside the torx screws. At the far end of the fence, it was still out of square about 1/32.Square at one end, not at the other...yep.It's twisted slightly."How do you fix that?" I thought, and called dewalt. My new fence arrived quickly, and...exactly the same.Still slightly bowed and twisted when aligned.Bah!I was frustrated with Dewalt for a few days there.

Then it occurred to me as I was building a custom fence for my miter saw.In order to get the fence perfectly aligned I was shimming it with playing cards and paper to get it perfect."That's how you fix it.You shim it!"Duh.I went to the saw, loosened the 3 T-knobs that hold the fence face on (not the torx screws, this doesn't change the parallel to the blade), and with a single playing card torn a few times and some paper, I had the fence dead perfect in 5 minutes.Perfectly straight, perfectly square.Ahhh, bliss.

Sure, it isn't fun to have to shim your equipment to get it right, but there are very few saws out there that are truly perfect, especially in this price range. It's an easy fix, so shim it and shaddup. Most folks will want to build a sacrificial fence anyway, so just shim it when you put it on.Dewalt is kind enough to use a piece of MDF in the packaging that you can use... (and I did!)

Last thing on the fence.Except for the above issues, this is really an excellent fence.Mine stays parallel to the blade dead on.I don't even have to use my tape measure, I just set the fence and cut, the results are perfect and completely repeatable. Now that I have the face aligned, it truly is a dream to use.

Dust collection.Comes standard with a 90 degree elbow on the dust port that a few people have commented on.If you take this off, dust shoots a few feet out of the back of the saw making a huge mess.If you leave it on, it stacks up on the floor under the saw in a relatively neat pile.Hence the elbow. If you want to hook to a dust collector, remove the elbow and replace it with any 2" to 4" adapter. It fits perfectly, takes literally seconds to install, and works great. No complaints on the dust collection.

Overall, I am very pleased with my purchase, and would do it again today.I am replacing the standard throat insert with a zero clearance.Do NOT buy the dewalt dado insert, as it rattles and is basically a waste of money. The miter gauge isn't great, but decent.I don't trust it for miters anyway, because that's what the miter saw is for.Mine came with a free mobile base from amazon, which is super high quality, tough as nails, and a breeze to install and use.

Why four stars? The fence, of course. It has its problems, but they aren't fatal flaws. If there wasn't a reasonable fix for it, I would have to go 1 or 2 stars, because I agree; A saw is only as good as its fence.Well, with this saw, a few shims and a little patience, you'll be chuckling every time you hit the start button. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Only way to go..
I've had my DW746 a couple of years now and mounted the cast iron wings as soon as I could get them after the initial purchase. The purchase price does seem a little high, but you will not regret the expenditure. Besides assuring you a flat, level playing field, the wings provide the extra weight that makes the saw more stable, and even further dampens the little vibration this saw creates. The fit and finish are very nice, and install is pretty simple and straight forward. Recommend two sets of hands for this job. I check my wings periodically, usually when I do my regular maintenance to the saw, for level and flush to the table, and they have never moved since installation. I clean them with a med grit sanding sponge, wipe em with denaturedalcohol and apply a coat of Top Cote a couple times a year. This is a great addition to an already great saw.
Highly recommend.

5-0 out of 5 stars Its not easy money to spend, but spend it anyway...
I have had the DeWalt 746 for a few months now, and I have been slowly adding accessories as I needed/could afford them. With a router table wing mounted on the left side, I chose to go ahead and put this wing on the right.

The wing shipped in good time and arrived undamaged.I was able to unpack and install it properly in about 25 minutes.Leveling it was not hard- in fact I was able to mount it by myself. The surface is blemish free and flat (within acceptable tolerances). No cast iron is "perfectly" flat", and neither the DeWalt saw table or this wing are either, but they are within a few thousandths...

Basically what I am saying is that this wing is worth buying. If you are like me and you are buying it after the fact, it will be hard to justufy spending the money when you could just get by with the steel wing, but then who wants to "just get by"?

Buy it, you won't regret it ever.

5-0 out of 5 stars Run, don't walk, to get this
The DW 7462 is a great saw except for three bum parts: the miter guage, the aluminum wings, and the plastic throat. You are going to upgrade -- the only question is how much you will suffer first.

The wings are great. Easy to install, flat, and heavy. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I studied a long time before buying this saw...
My woodworking hobby outgrew my starter saw a few years ago, but circumstances did not allow me to buy a new saw until this year. Since I really wanted to take my time with this decision, I studied the market, put my hands on every saw I could, and read everything I could find on the web about table saw features. Since I work in a library, I also had access to every table saw review in most of the woodworking magazines.

Eventually I came up with the following criteria:

- I have a one car garage for a workshop, so space was a big issue. I was only looking at saws with 30" capacity to the right of the blade. I also limited my search to saws that could be pushed flat against a wall if need be. This left only hybrids and cabinet saws to consider.

- I wanted the most powerful motor I could get without having to switch to 240 volts, yet have the option to rewire the saw for 240v later if I so choose (thus eliminating 3hp saws).

- I wanted a solid fence that was accurate and DID NOT DEFLECT when locked down.

- I wanted some decent dust collection abilities.

- I wanted a quieter saw with less vibration than my old Delta contractor's saw.

- I wanted to spend less than $1000 to get the saw, yet have lots of options for upgrading/outfitting later.

Eventually I chose the DeWalt 746, and here are my observations:

The saw package arrived in relatively undamaged crating (seven days after I ordered it from Amazon), and the saw was in perfect condition. Here's a tip - I ordered this saw over the phone and was given the option to pay $25 to have the saw delivered on the ground in my shop - well worth it! Assembly was not too bad (3 hrs), but the manual could have been a bit better. In my mind it was a bit too small and the illustrations corresponding to each step of assembly were not always on the same page! This saw is heavy and the cabinet/stand is very stiff and strong. I feel that the base of this saw is a much better design than the open stand of my old Delta. The saw also runs very smoothly - it is A LOT quieter than my last saw and vibration is at a minimum. The motor is about as powerful as you can get while running 120v without popping breakers left and right (which I have read is a common problem with the 2hp motors running 120v). I have not had any problems ripping 8/4 white oak with a good sharp blade... Speaking of blades, the one that came with this saw is inferior. I will keep it just for those instances where I want to cut treated lumber for outside projects or some other such task not requiring precision or smooth cuts. I have always wanted a Biesenmeyer fence, but I read good things about the fence on this saw and was eager to try it for myself. I am pleased to say that it is a very sturdy (and heavy) fence with some ingenious features. Most importantly this fence operates very smoothly, it does not deflect when locked down, it was easy to adjust square to the miter slot and blade, and zeroing the fence scale could not have been easier. I did have to fuss with it a bit to get the fence face set 90 degree to the table, but once I got it there it seems to hold the setting well. Dust collection on this saw is absolutely excellent. I hooked up my Fein Turbo II vacuum and basically no significant sawdust escapes. I couldn't be happier in that department. As for safety features, I like splitters and hate blade guards so I was pleased to find that the splitter/blade guard on this saw is able to be separated (I did just that). The splitter is easily adjustable and works well.

As far as downsides go... Well, as I mentioned earlier the assembly manual could have been way better and the blade that came with the saw is junk. Also (and I read this several places ahead of time) the table is not absolutely flat. Using a straightedge I found a couple of hollows in the surface. I don't think they are significant enough to throw off the accuracy of what I am doing with this saw, but be forwarned that if you use a tablesaw to cut something more intricate than tenons you may have a problem with this. Unlike other reviewers I didn't have too much of a problem with the steel extension wings that came with this saw. When installed properly are they perfectly level to the main table? Yes. Are they perfectly flat? No, but acceptible for what they are. I wanted a good saw that could be upgraded and these are good enough for temporary use. In fact there are a host of great accessories/upgrades available for this saw. I already ordered a cast iron router table wing (made by Bench Dog) and soon I plan to order the DeWalt cast iron wing for the other side of the saw.

When it comes down to it, I am very pleased with this saw. The features all met or exceeded my personal needs. This is important, because I have no doubt I could have gotten a saw that performed nearly as well for a lot less money, but it would have failed to meet one or more of MY criteria. As for the price - I bought mine at a time when the saw was on sale and the mobile base was included (see my separate review of the mobile base). The sale price coupled with Amazon's ongoing deal of 25 dollars off any order over 199 gave me this saw at more than a seventy dollar discount. If your needs are similar to mine, then take a close look at this saw. I highly recommend it!

4-0 out of 5 stars good saw for the money
I have had this saw for about 18 months now, and am pretty
satisfied with it.

Plusses: everything worked out of the box; solid saw, a lot
better than a portable; blade aligned with miter slots; has
worked solidly for 18 months.

Minuses: the fence was not perpendicular to the table (vertical)
and needed shimming; I think the fence is pretty accurate, but
it doesn't lend itself to sacrificial add-ons or using the
back (right) side of the fence; the 2 1/4 inch dust collection
port is "fair" at best; the included miter gauge is useless;
the stamped metal wings are cheesy; the motor is not strong
enough to push a blade that isn't pretty sharp through thicker
woods; the splitter is ok but is a *pain* to install and take off.

All in all, this sits right in the middle between a portable
and a good Unisaw.I think you get your money's worth, but
this is not a *great* product, i.e. where you get more than
what you paid for.

4-0 out of 5 stars Setup of DeWalt's DW746 Table Saw Can Be Frustrating
I have just spent about 15 hours setting up the DeWalt DW746 table saw, and I still can't use it.The On-Off Switch is defective; the motor starts up regardless of which position the switch is in--not exactly safe.I called DeWalt's help line but received a recorded message that help is available only 8-5 M-F, so I'll have to wait out the weekend. The saw has been set up in my basement workshop for 4 days and so far I've had to clean up about 1/4 cup of oil which has leaked from the motor. I don't know if this means the motor is defective; hopefully the DeWalt help line will clarify what is going on.
I took another owner's advice and bought the two heavy duty cast iron extension tables. One of the tables arrived with dings along the edge which mates with the main table; this edge also seems to be slightly bowed, being high in the middle and low at the edges.
Adjusting the saw blade to 0 and 90 degree bevel angles is straightforward with easily accessible adjustment screws located conveniently in the miter slots. However, adjusting the fence is something else.To square the fence to the table top, you must loosen three torx (T50) screws and make the adjustment. When finished, you are instructed to tighten the three torx screws. In the next setup step, setting the fence parallel to the blade, you are instructed to loosen two of the screws (which you just tightened) and to loosen the third screw just enough to allow setting the fence parallel.Unless you are very lucky, you are going to have to repeat this process several times in order to get everything square and parallel, because every time you get one adjustment right, it seems to throw off the other.
I agree with other reviewers that the supplied stamped left & right support tables are junk.Spend the extra money and get the heavy duty cast iron side tables. The supplied miter gauge is also a piece of junk, as are the arbor wrenches for changing blades.
Prepare to lay out even more money for a good combination or crosscut saw blade, because the one supplied with this saw is a ripping blade suitable only for "occasional cross cuts."
If you get the mobile base, assemble and install it as one of the first steps:don't wait until last, because this saw is awfully heavy to lift, especially with the heavy duty extension table attached.
All in all, I have high hopes for this saw--the main table seems sturdy enough, and the supplied motor is a high quality two capacitor induction type which should give years of faithful service. The defective On-Off switch is a big disappointment but I hope DeWalt's help epresentative will solve this to mutual satisfaction. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Fence Extension
The 52" fence extension and table add considerable versatility to theDW744.The only problem is some difficulty in leveling and securing thetable when using the mobil base.Even though the instructions tell you tolower the adjustable feet on the right table legs (to compensate for theadded height of the mobil base), you'll probably find that the topbolts/lock nuts at both far right ends of the table will not fit in theslots provided. The solution of course is to get out the drill and add ahole for the bolt, but DW should have thought this out a little betterbefore going into production. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars This is not an option, it is a necessity!
At the time I bought my DW746 table saw Amazon was offering this base as an added bonus (for the same price). If I had to order this thing separately, I probably would have tried to make something less expensive work for me.I am so glad that I have this base instead!

What I like about this product:

1.This thing is STOUT.The construction of this base is very heavy duty.Although my DW746 is a heavy beast, I am sure the base would handle much more weight than I am throwing on it with this saw.

2.The lift pedal mechanism works very smoothly.Another reviewer describes this base as having a tendency to 'drop' the saw when you are lowering the foot pedal.I noticed the same thing on the demo model I looked at in a Woodcraft store.Mine however does NOT seem to do this yet.I don't know if DeWalt tweaked it to fix the problem or I just got lucky...

3.I appreciate the fact that this base allows you to bolt the legs of the saw right to it - giving the saw cabinet even more stiffness and strength.

4.Once you have depressed the foot pedal, this thing smoothly and easily rolls the saw wherever you want it.Tight turns and small debris on the floor do not seem to pose a problem for this base.

What I don't like:

1.The price.Actually mine was included in a package deal, so I have no complaints. However, if I had to go buy the thing I would be chafing at the price.

A PIECE OF ADVICE:

If you buy this at the same time as you buy the DW746 saw remember this. The saw is shipped upside down in the crate.Assemble the base and attach it to the saw legs BEFORE you turn the saw right side up.Otherwise it is a real bear for two people to set the saw on the base while trying to line-up the bolts that attach legs to base...

Overall observations:

This is a very high quality product that you really will need and use all of the time if you buy it.I cannot say that you will be happy with the price tag, but once you make the investment you will never regret owning this accessory!

5-0 out of 5 stars an excellent base for dewalt saw owners
HAT'S OFF TO DEWALT.A FINE BASE FOR MY 760 TABLE SAW. ORDERED FROM AMAZON, IT CAME IN FINE COND. VERY WELL PAKAGED FROM DEWALT. A GREAT THOUGHT OUT DESIGN. FAR BETTER THAN SOME OF MY HTC BASES, & A MUST FOR PORTABILITY. THE THREE WHEEL DESIGN MAKES TURNING THISSAW A BREEZE IN ANY DIRECTION.A MUST FOR SMALL SHOP'S LIKE OUR'S. ANOTHER NICE FEATURE IS THIS BASE BOLT'S TO THE SAW MAKING IT EVEN MORE STABLE.

5-0 out of 5 stars You'd think I would learn....
The Dewalt mobile base was out of stock, everywhere, when I bought my DW746. In my small basement shop I need all the large machines to be mobile, so even though I know better I bought a "universal base" and the fight was on. After a couple of months of trying to make it work, I decided that enough was enough and ordered the Dewalt base. Had to wait 2 weeks but it finally arrived. Assembly was so easy I was sure I had missed something, spent another 20 minutes double checking everything. Got my neighbor to help me lift the saw off the old base and on to the new one. The saw is now easy, I do mean easy, to manuever and is solid as a rock once its set down in its operating position. No chance of it coming off the base as it is solidly bolted down. In the down position it has a lower profile and is LEVEL. With the universal base if you didnt apply pressure to the mobile base when moving the saw, there was a good chance the saw would slip off one of the rails. With the Dewalt base this can't happen, takes one hand on the saw to move it around and place it just where ya need it. This is a great addition to my saw and I only regret waiting so long to get it. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars poor top covering
While the fit with the rest of the saw (I have all the other options as well) is good, for the life of me, I can't figure out what DeWalt was thinking when they put the top covering on this table extension. The basic idea of an outfeed table is to support longer materials so they slide through the blade more easily and with less binding. The very first piece of rough wood I ran through the saw tore through the flimsy covering, rendering it useless.I wound up covering the top with high density plastic to get a nonbinding surface. Now the rest of the covering is detaching from the table, so I will have to replace the surface again. My recommendation: if you buy this, plan on immediately resolving the issue with the top or you will regret it later.

1-0 out of 5 stars 4 years of use
I have owned a Dewalt table saw with this extension for 4 years. The fibre board surface curved and sagged even with the steel stiffener underneath resulting in the workpiece only being supported partially. The leg is flimsy and can move in and out making the top surface move up and down. Not a design for the long run.

Works perfect with the DW744.

My DW744 manual says to replace the outside washer with the inside washer and use the arbor nut only.Another reviewer had a problem fitting a full size dado with both washers.Check your DW744 book.Dewalt may have changed there manual, so a call to Dewalt will get you a new manual.

4-0 out of 5 stars Easy Fit
The insert fits fine but the accompaning instructions point out a minorproblem not addressed with the original DW744 instructions:You cannot puta full 13/16" dado stack on the arbor and still use the large outsidewasher which acts as somewhat of a blade stabilizer. You might get a3/4" stack on using the washer and lock nut, but to use the extrachipper(s) you'll have to secure it with only the lock nut (or anaftermarket thinner washer/stabilizer).Probably not a big deal but DWcould have easily solved the problem with a little more thought in theirengineering process regarding the arbor length.

Editorial Review

DeWalt's DW746 Woodworker's table saw features an inboard 1-3/4-horsepower induction motor that is quiet, powerful, and significantly cuts down on vibration. The inboard motor also makes this saw considerably more space-efficient than outboard-motor saws, something you'll appreciate if you work in a small shop or have to take your saw through doorways. And at 254 pounds, this saw has plenty of heft, a big cast-iron trunnion, and a sturdy steel base. 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Add On
I had absolutly no trouble with reading, understanding and following the instruction when installing the DW7461 Heavy Duty Table Slide to my Dewalt Table Saw.

To me the key was.Don't go to the following step until the prior one is completly understood and inplemented.

Well worth the cost.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great table, not-so-great mitre gauge
I've found the table to be a great addition to the saw; the mitre gauge less impressive. The table is fairly easy to set up--although the instructions could be improved, if you have a helper for the lifting step the parts are all well-engineered and fit together well.It took me about 5 minutes to level it perfectly--you should set the horizontal distance from the main table before adjusting the set screws. It slides smoothly. And it adds 100lbs or so to the saw, making it even more stable--a big plus.

But I'll be saving my pennies to buy a replacement mitre gauge, as the DeWalt gauge is very sloppily put together.Even locked down at every adjustment, it wobbles, and I have no confidence in any angle set.I'm using the stock mitre gauge for the time being, and that's a workable interim solution.

EDITED 9/7/04:DeWalt shipped me a replacement gauge which locks down beautifully, and will enable great precision.Altogether I now have a very fine package--certainly worth five stars.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not even close
I greatly anticipated delivery of the DeWalt sliding table for my table saw.Assembly is not trivial even for an experienced and mechanicaly inclined person such as myself. Then the disappointments started.I had a difficult time adjusting the table to level since moving one leveling screw upset some other corner. When I had the table level, I adjusted the gap between the sliding table and the saw. With the gap straight, I found that the table was no longer level.Around and around this sequence went. When I finally had the gap straight and the table level, I tightened the mounts and slid the table. That was when I noticed that the table doesn't stay level through its travel. This was the final straw of frustration, so back the table goes to get my money back. For this kind of money, I would expect better performance from DeWalt products.I still love my table saw, but the sliding table is junk since it won't hold stable through the travel. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars No more table saw envy
After 7 years of use, it was finally time to upgrade my Skil portable saw.I did a lot of research into different models, including the Jet, Delta, and Powermatic. Finally I went to a woodworking show and talked to the man who literally "wrote the book" on table saws, and he recommended the DeWalt DW746.It was a little more than I wanted to spend on a saw, but he said it should be the last saw I ever buy.I ordered it and the 30" rails from Amazon, and ordered the mobile base from Tyler (Amazon had a long back order and Tyler was cheaper).

The suggestion made by someone else here to assemble the base first, then attach it to the feet while the saw was still upside down in the crate was on the money. Can't imagine trying to attach it afterwards.

* Pros:

Assembly took a few hours, and was very straightforward.

The table was very flat, and everything but the splitter was well aligned.

I had to resaw some 5/4 x 5 Poplar, and the saw never bogged down at all.Plus it made surprisingly smooth and well aligned cuts for having to flip the wood over to make 2 passes.

Dust collection works surprisingly well.I had to rig up a 2-1/2 to 4" adapter, but it removes 90% of the dust.A little dust still blows off the blade.

Very smooth running, no vibration. The internal motor and wide belt lend a lot to that.

Takes up a lot less space than most other saws, since the motor is inside the frame.

The 30" rails were flat and true.

* Cons:

Removing the guard is a pain, and it's a little hard to get at one of the nuts.

The blade that comes with it is lousy.Replaced it with a Freud and it's like night and day.

Needs a 20A line, as it occasionally trips a 15A breaker on startup.I'm going to switch it to 240v soon.Should be smoother.

The miter guage does not have any holes in it for mounting accessories and jigs.I took care of that.

The assembly instructions (as others have mentioned) could stand some improvement. The photos were not matched up with the text, and in some places the text started next to the picture then wrapped under it, making it very hard to follow. This should be a simple fix for DeWalt.

* Overall:

I'm hoping the author was correct that it will be my last saw.So far I have been very impressed with it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Shop teacher- Great saw!
I've taught high school woodshop for 13 yrs and have used contractor saws in my home shop and 2 Unisaws in the school shop. Needing to upgrade the saw at home I researched the options. A Unisaw was my first choice but if I bought it I was short on funds for an upgrade fence (Beisemeyer) and sliding table. Looking at the hybrid saws brought me to the Jet and the Dewalt. Reviews of the Jet spoke of a quailty machine but with a few shortcomings such as the link belt for blade adjustment. The DW was newer on the market than the Jet so didn't have many reviews. I decided to purchase a recon unit from Toolking for just under 800.00.

The saw arrived in sturdy packing and there was nothing to make me believe it had been reconditioned for any reason. No sawdust, dents, dings etc. A few hours to assemble with decent directions. I had also purchased the 30" Beisemeyer commercial fence and Delta sliding table and Forrest blade. All this took me to under 1500.00 which was the entry level price for the Unisaw.

The saw has seen hundreds of feet of cherry and tiger maple. I built an entire set of kitchen cabinets with melamine boxes and cherry doors. The sliding table was easy to install on the Dewalt. I have not had one single problem or noticed any lack of power or performance.

I made some zero clearance inserts and a large side and outfeed table. The saw comes with some steel units that are rather light weight. The factory fence looks decent although I have never installed it.

My only recommendations for improvement would be to add a 4" or 6" dust port and larger handwheels for blade adjustment. All in all its a great value for the money. Lance A, Chico CA

5-0 out of 5 stars I studied a long time before buying this saw!

I have always wanted a Biesenmeyer fence, but I read good things about the DeWalt fence on this saw and was eager to try it for myself.

I already installed a cast iron router table wing (made by Bench Dog) and soon I plan to order the DeWalt cast iron wing for the other side of the saw.

Editorial Review

2-0 out of 5 stars 4 years of use
I have owned this table for 4 years now.Let me tell you about it.First the main table saw cast iron surface is not flat, there is a bow making it hard to align the blade at 90 degree. The blade insert is of thin cast aluminum and is bowed as well, not a surprise when you cast something with a long slot in it but inadequate for this use.The dust removal through is inefficient, you'll get dust inside and under the table. The miter saw extension is next to useless. It is also bowed from bad machining process (again a cast iron piece that has not been stress relieved before machining). The result is that it is impossible to align with the main table. The alignment system for the miter saw table is a four point system which means there is one redundant degree of liberty adding more difficulty. The miter attachement is also flimsy and deflects under load, it is very difficult to make straight cuts.

The fence is excellent with its tubular sliding mechanism. The power is good. All in all, a table for carpentry not for cabinet or furniture making where precision cut is needed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Take your time during set up!
I agree with the other review, Home Depot was rude and my local woodworking shop tried to push a Jet on me. I bought it at Amazon.com.I have the sliding table, 52" fence, both extension tables. My biggest complaint is the rear table is small and being I have it on a mobile base is a pain becuase it does not fold up or down. The saw went together very well and has adjusted perfectly. This is not a slap it together and expect it to be right type of saw. Plan on spending a few days getting it adjusted correctly. I had no issues with the fence or arbor alingment even after checking with a dial indicator. Out of the box the fence head slide stop was broken. I called DeWalt and was very impressed with their service. A new head was shipped promptly.
Side note: Don't ever believe Amazon when they say ships in two -three weeks............ I waited 3 months!!!!! If I was in need of a saw due to failure of my present one I would have cancelled the order. Over all this is a wonderfull piece of equipment and I rate it 95 out of 100....

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Saw
I'll start with what's really important to me, and then I'll talk about the detractors.I bought this saw five months ago, but before I wrote a review I wanted to get some sawdust on the floor first.Bottom line this table saw cuts wood -- and does it very well. That's why I gave it a five star rating.I suppose a 3hp cabinet saw does a better job, but for a guy cutting wood in his garage that¡¦s a bit of overkill. But hey, if you got the money, go for it.

What do I like about this saw:

--It's heavy.It doesn't move a bit when you rip a big board.
--The sliding table is a thing of beauty. It's massive and when you clamp a board on it to cut, momentum carries it thru the blade with no vibration or kick back.
--The 52 inch fence is dead accurate. The first few weeks I measured every cut with a tape till I realized the fence was more accurate than my tape.
--The mobile base is worth its weight in gold.It works like a champ.
--It's made in the USA.

What I don't like:
--The blade that comes with the saw is mediocre at best.Good for cutting your neighbor¡¦s wood when he mooches off your table saw.
--The sliding table came wrapped in cosmoline. It took forever to remove, even when I used steel wool.
--The dust exhaust is at a very awkward angle.I connect it to my portable shop vacuum.Reaching it is a constant bother.

Words of caution:
--Setting this saw up takes a bit of time.I¡¦ve seen where some say they did it in 3 hours or less.Maybe they did.It took me two days to get it put together and properly tuned.Be prepared, there¡¦s an awful lot of bolts, nuts and washers. This is not an open the cardboard box and start cutting table saw.
--With the DW746KB model, there is a separate manual for each piece (outfeed table, fence, saw, mobile base, sliding table). The manuals don¡¦t all work in harmony with each other.READ all the manuals first. Then start putting the saw together.HINT:Put the mobile base together first, then build the saw on top of it.
--Pay very close attention to the tuning procedures.Take a break if you need to.Five months after building this thing, I know I need to go back and do one part of it over again to get it right. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Again, this might seem like a minor touch until you think about how frustrating it is to bang your knuckles on a table bottom every time you want to change the blade height. This table's sturdy metal bevel scale is a nice touch, too; it's easy to read and much burlier than the mere stickers found on a lot of other saws.

The saw's inboard 1-3/4-horsepower induction motor is quiet, cuts down on vibration, and makes this saw considerably more space-efficient than outboard motor saws, a feature you'll appreciate if you work in a small shop or have to take your saw through doorways. And at 254 pounds, this saw's got plenty of heft, a big cast-iron trunnion, and a sturdy steel base. There's also an integrated dust port if you want to hook the saw up to a dust collector. Available in a few different configurations, the DW746--with its 52-inch fence, table board, and sliding table and miter attachment--is really the top of the line. --Jon Groebner ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars robust and accurate
I am extremely happy with this saw.I purchased the DW746KB package. The 52" rails, sliding table, and side table all perform superbly.However,.... if you plan to buy this package, spend 5 to 6 hours deciphering four intersecting manuals while assembling and aligning, and then trust it all to a mobile base, maybe your missing the point!
This is a robust machine, and begs to be bolted to the floor.Mine is firmly anchored to the floor in my shop.Your spending this kind of money(or considering it) because you want durability and consistent reliability.Who cares if the cast table is out 16/1000s,when you keep rolling the equipment into the same "sinkhole" you call "flat", in the only part of the garage your wife doesn't "really need".Commit!Wired for 220v, This is a very smooth running, quiet, powerful saw. Crosscut accuracy is exceptional.Do yourself a favor, dedicate some space for this saw, install it ,and save the mobile base for something you didn't spend $ and hours of setup time on.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great saw with minor improvement ahead
You pretty much know how it is from other reviews. There are only couple of things I like to add from my experience using it. I wish the table top is wider to cover the legs, so when attaching things that are not as thin as the table top itself, the legs and frames will not get in the way. I need to make something to fill the gaps when attaching the extension table and sliding table (of course not DeWalt sliding table), because I can bring them to make direct contact to the table top. I also wish the dust port is straight instead of angled one.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great overall but has severe fence problems
I've had the saw for several months now and feel I've used it sufficiently to give an accurate review. The saw performs very well in most respects. It's very beefy construction and well made. I have mine wired for 220V and it has plenty of power even when ripping oak.The blade that came with the saw is good quality. The sliding miter table is really nice, allowing me to cross cut wide panels I used to cut with a straight edge and clamps setup. The miter guage is good quality and has a cam type adjuster that's a little touchy but works ok. The size of the table and extention are great, giving plenty of room for large projects with nice stability. It's nice to grab a sheet of plywood and run it through without worrying about it tipping off the table.
Mine did have a few problems though, some minor, one not so minor. The front fence rail tape measure came installed incorrectly. When the fence was against the blade, the indicator read 1 1/4" instead of 0 as it should have. A call to DeWalt customer service had a new front rail to me in a week or so. One of the wheels of the mobile base had the bolt whole drilled off center and caused it to wobble. It was replaced as well. I've recently discovered that the throat plate is warped at the outfeed end, fence side. It tips in toward the blade. This comes into play only when cutting narrow, short pieces or cutting on edge. The piece tends to tilt away from the fence and in toward the blade at the end of a cut. I haven't called about this problem yet.
The saw has a couple of design problems too. The wrench hanger is positioned up high on the front of the saw and behind the front fence rail. I have to lean down or crouch down to see the pin to retrieve or replace the wrenchs. The on/off switch has a nice feature. It's large and positioned so I can hit it with my knee to turn the saw off. I've used that feature many times. It's a bit harder to turn it on though. The switch, like the wrench hanger, is positioned high and behind the front rail so it can't be seen easily.
The most severe problem is the fence. DeWalt has done such a nice job with quality materials in the rest of the saw, but really scrimped on the fence. The fence beam is light guage metal and distorts if I'm not careful when tightening the face. The face is extruded aluminum which is ok, but the one on my saw was warped. I was unable to get the face adjusted 90 degrees to the table. When I called DeWalt they acknowledled they were aware of the problem and sent me a shim kit. I was unable to adjust the face properly even with the kit. DeWalt then sent a new fence beam and face. This, with the shim kit, got the face adjusted ok. It's still not perfect, but it's usable. The face still has a problem though. The first 4-5" of it are out of line with the rest of it. I have to be careful when I start a cut to place the piece in 4-5" on the face to avoid starting my cut out of line. When I called DeWalt customer service on this one I was given the location and phone # of a nearby service center to contact. I haven't done that yet. I must say, DeWalt was very responsive to every call I made. They must recieve kudos for their customer service.
I bought this saw after comparing and considering the Delta Unisaw. Some factors I considered were the sliding table DeWalt offered and the lower price. The Delta's 3hp motor was a major attraction to me but in the end I bought the DeWalt because of a promotional offer of $100 off. Although I am not dissapointed in the power of the DeWalt, the problems I've encountered would give me pause to make the same choice again. ... Read more
