5-0 out of 5 stars Great Stone and System
This sharpening system is practically flawless. The stone easily goes from a coarse (220 grit) to a fine (1000 grit). The side of the stone quickly flattens a chisels back. The honing wheel puts a mirror finish that is better than razor sharp. The jigs allow for sharpening of most any tool. If you are a beginne to tool sharpening this system and stone will get you going quickly. The learning curve is "sharp" as your tools will be.

4-0 out of 5 stars Answers
This grinding wheel is 10" in diameter and is specifically designed for use with the Tormek sharpening system.Mine came to me with two perfectly flat sides and the circumference perfectly square (a necessity for certain grinding operations with the system). The single drawback I've discovered is that is rather soft and damages quite easily.I slipped off the edge of the stone while grinding a chisel and scored the edge.

5-0 out of 5 stars Typical TORMEK Quality
This accessory is like a lot of the other TORMEK accessories -- it costs a lot.Across the board, their accessories (and even the machine itself) raises the eyebrows of the purchaser when you see the price.But... that shock goes away once the tool is in use.Their system is so simple, yet so effective. This profiled honing wheel is no exception. When you first open the box you'll notice the quality of the washers included... that may sound stupid, but it's indicative of the quality of all the TORMEK components. This honing wheel works great on gouges and 90-degree carving knives. It "completes" the wheel array on the TORMEK machine... transforming an already versatile machine into a complete sharpening center. It's a neat and quick way to hone a turning gouge... keep it near your lathe.

Like everything else TORMEK, this thing isn't cheap... but quality doesn't come cheaply, and the cost is more than offset by the utility of this wheel.

Highly Recommended!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Leather Wheel You Will Need
When using the Tormek sharpening system, after the job of sharepening is done, the manufacturers suggest using the leather honing wheel to deburr the tool sharpened.I say suggest, as it is imperative a user do this.

By using the leather honing wheel, the user will be able to deburr gouges much easier than using the supplied wheel. The curved shape of the leather wheel makes using it very easy and very simple.

For the amount of money spent on the Tormek, a user should go ahead and get this accessory. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Instruction
I bought my Tormek Supergrind and did not think that the video would be worth spending the extra money on.Even though the Tormek manual is written very well, there were some details that I was not certain of.

A friend of mine who also bought the Tormek Supergrind commented on how much the video helped him with the use of the tool. After viewing it at his house, I decided I needed my own.

The details and close-ups in the video show, without confusion, the proper use of the tool with many of the various jigs and accessories.

With the Tormek Supergrind and this video, even an amateur will produce finely honed cutting edges on kitchen knives, planer and jointer knives, turning chisels, chopping axes and many other household and workshop cutting edges.

Money well spent! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Saves you time when sharpening chisels and flats
I bought the Tormek sharpening system and all of the attachements, and I must admit, I'm glad I did. Does a great job. It is the next level of sharpening. If you are doing woodwork etc, and keeping good edges is a time consuming task, then the Tormek will save you a ton of time.
The one thing that I am critical of, is having to redress the wheel with the stone grader, to go from coarse grit to fine grit. Done properly, takes some time, and you have to lean on the stone grading tool. The problem is that you can not take a chisel out of the holder, after using the coarse grit stone setting, and put in another chisel, then redress the stone, and put the chisels back in properly again, They are always off. How much are they off? Sufficiently to have to take off some more metal at a minute angle to get the whole face done again. The fatory rep was redressing the wheel, to the two different settings, at the woodworkers convention, after every sharpening.
I tried to mount the chisel back in the holder, perfectly after removing it, but their are so many planes to consider, that if even one of them is off by a few thousandths, you are not getting a proper and full surface sharpening at the finer grit. One answer is to buy an extra SVH-60 Straight Edge Jig, the most popular one used, and comes with the Tormek sharpening system. That way, you can put in a chisel, remove the jig, install a second chisel in the second SVH-60 and sharpen it also in the coarse setting. Then when you redress the stone, with the grader to the 1000 grit setting, you can run both of the chisels, still mounted in their jigs, to get a perfectly smooth job. Cuts the time almost in half when sharpening straight-flat tools, such as chisels.
One other consideration when using SMALL irregular shaped woodturning gouges for example. Is dress the whole wheel in the rough setting, then stone grade one half of the stone in the fine grade. You can then rough out the tool on the coarse side, and immediately fine grade it on the fine side, without having to worry about the reclamping dilemma. Large face tools require whole wheel regrading. Since you are using specific areas of the stone to do what I just mentioned, be sure and have the diamond tip truing tool, to redress the stone after a lot of use to its true flat surface. You would not want to use the stone on a split basis very long, because the irregular surface depth, would once again, create a misalignment of the face when switching to the finer grade. Of course we are talking about a pretty fine difference, so this is as much a theory consideration, as it is a practical one.
In plain words, having an extra one or two of the SVH-60s will save you time when performing the most frequent use of flat chisels. This Tormek system is a great system. One that will time and again show in your work. One that yields the results of razor sharp tools, and the precision work that it enables. Hope this helps.

5-0 out of 5 stars a must have
This is a must have item for woodcarving or lathe tools (gouges, etc). This jig is what makes the Tormek stand above other sharpening systems. It allows you to sharpen curved tools on the straight stone, something that isextremely difficult for the novice, and is very time consuming. ... Read more

Editorial Review

For anyone who uses and works with tools enough to require a grinder, this model from Tormek is a well-designed, high-performance option. First and foremost, the Tormek Super Grind is water-cooled, removing one of the major obstacles to grinding: overheating your tool. With the water-cooling system, the wheel is able to turn at a much higher revolution, allowing for more-accurate, cleaner results. With its excellent bracket and clamp system, the Tormek works well with varying kinds and sizes of blades, but keep in mind that it will need additional accessory brackets for some tools. The grinder comes with an aluminum oxide grindstone and a leather honing wheel, and both connect to the motor at the same time so you won't have to switch wheels on the machine. The unit uses a 115-volt motor and reaches up to 90 rpm, which is plenty of power for most uses. In fact, we were impressed with the overall burliness of the tool--it's definitely intended for heavy-duty use. Only the on/off button was a little unwieldy, but it's well protected and should hold up. This Tormek is certainly a great machine for sharpening and finely honing gardening tools, woodworking tools, and more. An instruction video and book are included. --Jonathon Tudor ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The best
This tool is everything it claims to be.Best dedicated sharpening tool on the market, bar none.Don't hesitate because of the price, it's worth every penny.

5-0 out of 5 stars Yes, it is good.
I resisted for years, always using water stones to sparpen my chisels. I still think the price is way too high for the Tormek, but now that I own it I consider it a must have. Too bad all the accessories are overpriced too, but Torkek does have great products. It is easy to get a great edge on anything with this tool with the proper accessory. When I think of all that time I spent sharpening chisels on my waterstones......... Suddenly the price doesn't look so bad.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hot Knife through Butter
I picked up a Tormek 2006 from a local woodworking store a couple months ago.Bought the complete fixture kit from amazon.com a couple days later.

This sharpening system really lives up to the hype.I used to spend about 2 hours on a single chisel using the sandpaper and glass method to get what I thought was a sharp edge. With the Tormek, I spend about 5 minutes to get the initial profile on the chisel and about 30 seconds to resharpen using the Tormek. The Tormek produced a much sharper egde than I was able to get in 2 hours messing with a bunch of different grits of sandpaper.

The Tormek instructions were very straight forward and easy to understand.Great pictures too.Nice thing about Tormek is you can download the entire user manual before you buy and look it over.

After playing around sharpening my chisels and plane irons with great result, I ordered the complete kit to sharpen my planer blades, jointer blades, turning tools, knifes, and scissors.Everything came out perfect.Note that I have not been using this thing for years.I just got this machine a couple months ago and I can turn out tools that are sharp as can be.But more important than having sharp edges is how this machine has increased the quality of the end product.Thats the true test in anything we buy.Is it a gadget or will it make a difference in the end product. This machine will make a difference.

Hope this helps. Is an expensive piece of equipment but well worth the investment if are in it for the long run.

Editorial Review

This might well be the world’s most perfect sharpening system. It’s water-cooled, for starters, which eliminates sparks and prevents overheated edges. The system is packed full of jigs for every need, so even complicated shapes like fingernail turning gouges, spoon carving gouges, and oval skew chisels are no problem. You can even replicate a previous sharpening. The 2-inch wide, 10-inch diameter aluminum oxide wheel is 220 grit and runs at a low speed through the water trough. When your tool is sharpened, just move it to the leather honing wheel for a polished, razor-sharp finish. Unlike other tools that require you to buy accessories, this grinding system comes with 10 jigs to sharpen everything from scissors to parting and beading tools. The serious wood carver or turner with a decent investment in tools should make this his or her next purchase. Yes, it’s more expensive than your average grinder--but this is far from your average grinder, and it comes with a hardbound, well-illustrated book and 23-minute video to guide you through the process.--Kris Jensen-Van Heste ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Too much fun....
This tool actually belongs to my woodworking buddy who also lives next door. He got it for his birthday last year, but really hasn't used it much. He hasn't been able to get very good results with the machine. Mainly because he's fairly impatient and didn't really watch the video or read the manual. Don't get me wrong...he is not dumb...he just does better if someone show's him "hands on" how to use a particular tool.
I've had this tool in my shop now for a week or so, and it is really too much fun. My sweetie has some micro turning tools that I have always had a heck of time sharpening because they are so small. The tormak changed all that, once it is set up, these little tools are no longer a challenge, not even those #%$&**% tiny gouges. Our other turning tools are also enjoying a high level of sharpness. I've pretty much gone thru all the tools in my shop that have a cutting edge...chisel's, planes, etc., learning to use the machine and all the jigs that came with it. The video is excellant and the manual pretty complete, well layed out and plenty of pictures. Setup for differant tools does take a little time and patience, but I think with use, the time factor will be greatly reduced. It does a fantastic job on all cutting tools and I will miss this tool when it returns to it's home.
This is not a tool that I can afford, especially with all the attachments, but it is definitly on my wish list. Maybe one or all of the grandkids will get together next christmas and surprise me. (Yeah...that'll happen)
I would recommend this tool to all woodworkers who want sharp cutting tools and can afford this tool. It is very solid, fit and finish are excellent, runs smoothly, and very fast once set up.Maybe someday........

5-0 out of 5 stars Tormek SuperGrind
Buy the complete package; it is expensive, but you only have to do it once. The system is simple and easy to use.It gets the chisels so sharp you must watch those fingers when working on a project.

5-0 out of 5 stars Accurate and Effective
I bought the Tormek turners package. The Instruction book is first rate. The steps are easy to follow and the illustrations are clear.I have used it on chisels and hand plane blades.I'm working my way through all my tools and using them as I go. To date I am thrilled with the ease of use and the great results cutting wood. Flattening the backs on the side of the stone takes a little bit of time if there is a lot of material to remove but it goes easily. The tools work quickly and switching between the rough and fine grinding surfaces takes me about less than a minute including removing and replacing the tool being ground. I have changed bevel angles pretty easily. The honing feature is easy to use and gives the metal a mirror finish. The tormek is heavy enough to stay in place without any fastening required. The biggest bother is cleaning out the water tray but a hose does the trick in no time. I would not want to dump the fine, wet grit down a sink without running a lot of water.

This replaced a high speed grinder with 'special' white and pink stones plus and assortment of aftermarket jigs, diamond stones, ceramic stones, natural stones and other stuff. All of them helpful but slow and not as accurate.

If I figure all I spent on the other stuff I was half way to the Tormek package. I should have listened to my wife when she said "just buy the best". ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Woodworkers Dream Come True
This system is truely the best auxillary power tool I have ever owned. It has literly made my blades, chisels, gouges and scrapers razor sharp and absolutely consistent. Hand sharpening is for the birds or masochists. Now I can touch up a dull gouge in less han a minute and have a perfectly contoured, razor sharp tool and get right back to work. Although it's great for chisels the Tormek system really shines for Lathe tools and planer/jointer blades. Best investment I ever made.

5-0 out of 5 stars Tormek, expensive but worth it
As an amateur woodworker, chef, and handyman around the house, the value I place on sharp tools can not be understated. That being said, there are few comprehensive options out there for sharpening all of your tools with one system. The Tormek SuperGrind is the solution. After unpacking the system, I proceded to sharpen all of my kitchen knives to a razor's edge, with ease.Previously I had to bring all of my knives to the sharpening center and pay $ dollars for the service. Those days are gone!I can now sharpen my wive's turning tools, my chisels and plane irons, even my jointer blades with one easy to use system. It makes experts out of novices, I can't praise this system enough.Buy the Tormek, expensive but worth it.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE MOST EXPENSIVE IS THE CHEAPEST
My tool sharpening career began 20 years ago when I bought a few Norton oilstones. Never could master them so I upgraded to Japaneese waterstones with fair results, but a messy chore I detested. Bought Diamond stones to flatten the backs, a lapping stone with dust, and next a bench grinder. I could sharpen a blade already ground to the correct angle but forget about re-edging an angle on the grinder, blue edges every time! Bought different wheels for the grinder, same results. Next went to the Makita flat circular grinding wheel but the wheel was so soft, hard to keep it flat. Next read about a jig for the grinder and another new softer stone that would not burn edges as well as an angle devise to hold the blades at correct angles on the handstones. Bought a few new handstones, synthetic, ant tried all of these with fair results. Over the past 20 yeats I figure I must have about $1000 invested in all of this equipment (let me know if you want to buy it) and I still detested the sharpening thing. Could do plane blades and chisels so-so.
I heard about the Tormek system and read the amazon reviews (which sold me)and decided to give it a try. I bought mine through Sharp Tools USA, a business that only sells this system. I splurged and got the deluxe package since buying the individual jigs I needed would have cost the same and I would be missing some jigs. Everything they say is true. [anyone] can become a professional sharpener. I beg friends to bring their tools and knives and scissors to me. Instead of detesting the job, I now love sharpening. The only bad thing about the system is that a few scratches on the bevel remain that I guess you could lap out on the leather wheel, but these do not make a difference to me. All of my blades are now razor sharp, and in fact I don't have any hair left on my left arm from test shavingafter each sharpening.
I sure wish I knew about the Tormek system 20 years ago. Instead of spending over $1000 I would have spent several hundreds less and not had to go through the hours of frustration trying to sharpen my tools. Yes, the most expensive item is often the cheapest in the long run! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Works GreatWhen Used Correctly
As a rule Tormek is straight-up about what you should use to create a polished bevel or edge and this compound is not an exception to that rule. One review I read on the Tormek complained about getting the compound all over the place - and the key to avoiding that is the advice that a little goes a long ways. Their documentation (yes, it's worth reading) tells you to impregnate the wheel with light machine oil and then add a THREAD of compound. I learned what that means - and it's not the size of the trail that comes out of your toothpaste tube!

5-0 out of 5 stars Another "Must Have" for the TORMEK
This compound works great on the leather honing wheel. It can also be used on the leather profiling wheel. It makes the machine do more with less time and less wear on the machine. It also extends the life of the leather wheel, and a little goes a long way.I've done a lot of sharpening, and I'm not through my first tube yet!

It's a "must have" for the TORMEK.

5-0 out of 5 stars honing with Tormek compound
This compound really works great, but you need to put mineral oil on the leather first to help it absorb the honing compound. After a while you only use the oil from time to time. ... Read more
