Editorial Review

Looking right out of the Jetsons' household, Fein's Turbo II vacuum is one the most effective on the market. With features like automatic start and dust-sealed switches, it's specifically designed to work with shaping, routing, or sanding tools, which create a lot of dust. It's also as quiet as any shop vacuum we've heard, making it easier to use in close proximity to a project, or in an enclosed space, and its internal fabric boot helps keep dust to a minimum. The Turbo II has a 7.3-gallon solid capacity, a 6.8-gallon liquid capacity, and a 1,300-watt, 9-1/2 amp, two-stage motor. Its size and sturdy rollers make it very portable and easy to dump after being filled. Unlike some larger models, you'll still be able to lift and empty this vacuum by yourself. The body is solid plastic and will hold up well to wear. The shape of the vacuum makes it easy to move around a job site--there aren't any big handles or attachments sticking out (other then the hose) to get snagged when wheeling the vacuum around. Fein's Turbo II is--hands down--a very high-quality, very low-noise vacuum, well worth the investment for carpenters, woodworkers, and craftspeople. --Jonathon Tudor ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good Vacuum, Bad Waranty
I'm writing this messege with the intent of alerting users to some issues I just experienced with the Fein Model 9-55-13 vacuum.I"m not recommending against buying one, but I do think they should revisit their service policy.

I had my unit for about a year and a half.During that time I was genrealy very pleased with the unit in many respects. It had fantastic dust collection, a resonable foot print, and of course made a lot less noise than anything else.

A few days back it broke.I called Fein and was told that I had to send it into either Pitsburg or Hartford.I told them I was a contractor and needed an immediate replacement. The rep asked me if I wanted to buy a new one!

I sent an email.Below is the response (note he got my name wrong):

Craig Morrison [cmorriso@feinus.com]
Hi Vince,

I am not really sure how to respond to thie compliant, or even if we should. While I think our repair centers probably shouldn't throw repair estimates at our customers, and wait till they actually see the tool, I also don't believe that Sears, or any other manufacture would consider a "no-charge" replacement on a power tool that has been used for a year and half.

Craig

Contast this with Shopvac - 5 year waranty (and a cheap unit!)

(Note: I had a shopvac that was a few years old and they simply sent me out a new engine when it broke OVERNIGHT!!!)

3-0 out of 5 stars Not Very Powerful and a Pain to Clean
I have had this vac for about three years now.I use it a lot when sanding and it does a nice job collecting dust so I don't have to wear a dust mask and I don't get covered with dust whensanding. My sanding discs last a lot longer when using the vac.
Cleaning the filter is a pain because I have to go outside with a nozzle and hose connected to my compressor.I blow the dust off the filter and it makes a huge cloud of dust outside and I have to hose down the residue on the ground.
The vacuum loses power as the filter becomes clogged. At first it was very quiet but after a while it became louder and louder and now is about as loud as any other shop vac.
The sucking power is not impressive. It has no more sucking power than my household vacuum. What is nice is that when you turn it on it doesn't blow a cloud of dust like other shop vacs. The small diameter hose clogs easy with small scraps. The acessories are extra and not cheap.

3-0 out of 5 stars FEIN Turbo almost a great product
I bought it for it's relatively low noise level - which it delivers.

It's hard to believe that a premium priced product like this would have some glaring shortcomings such as:

ON-OFF switch is concealed from view and the symmetrical design of the top gives no clue where it is every time you look to turn it on or off. I made a bandaid fix by placing a piece of tape on the top above the switch location - (-at this price?)

The casters must be smallest of any on the market and they are not guarded. Any obstruction on the floor such as an air hose or extension cord will stop them.

There is no built in provision for storing the powercord.

There is completely inadequate provision for storage of the vacuum hose. If at least one or two more wire formed brackets were included it would help a lot.

There is NO provision at all for storing any nozzles or hose extension.

These shortcomings will annoy every time the product is used - NOT GOOD.

This is a case of function being sacrificed at the altar of Industrial Design, yet so unnecessary and so easily avoidable.

Editorial Review

Cleanup remains the bane of many a woodworker's existence. But times are changing. Gone are the days of loud, clunky vacuums, thanks to the 9-77-25 Turbo III portable vac from Fein. The Turbo III is the strong, silent type, emitting only a low, steady hum as it clears debris from the work site. But don't let its quiet demeanor fool you. The Turbo III is a real workhorse around the shop. As a wet-dry vac, it provides airflow of 125 cfm and static water lift of 105 inches, with a 12-gallon wet and 14.5-gallon dry capacity. But it really earns its keep when you flip the switch to auto, attach your favorite power tool, and let it go. In auto mode, the Turbo III will start as soon as you activate the tool you have plugged into it; no need to turn the vacuum on first or turn it off when you're done. The Turbo III is built tough and is easy to assemble and clean. Solid clamps lock the motor housing securely into place, while an extra-long power cord and protected switches provide added safety in wet conditions. --Carl Thress ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Fein 9-77-25 excells
The original purpose of investing in the Fein was that I had problems with the other vacuums that I owned not doing a good job in filtering the air.The bags and filters did not work.
Forget about that problem with a Fein vac. Then to top it off, it is as quiet as stated.
Problems, yes, the accessories are expensive, but you can utilize your old accesories if you go to the store and get a rubber pipe reducers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Fabulous
I purchased the Fein Turbo III to replace a Porter Cable and to shift from a 15 foot, 1.5 inch hose to a 25 foot, 2.5 inch hose. This allows me to reach every part of my small shop without pulling the vacuum around.I was concerned that the suction power would either stay the same, given the stats, or decrease.

I was very surprised that the suction power increased.

The design is elegantly simple.Instead of numerous possible leakage points (like in the PC), the circular top of the Fein with the motor and controls sits on the bottom and clamps tight with no air loss. The top can be rotated to accomodate a configuration separate from the bottom and the direction of the hose. While the filters are expensive, they are durable and not as fragile as the PC and many others that are either plastic or paper.A Hepa filter is also available. Both are easily installed.

The only down-side is that the Turbo III arrives only with the vacuum and a 10 foot hose.Accessories (read nozzle) are extra. For my part this was not a problem.I purchased a better hose from a third party and at half the cost.Oh!Did I mention it is the quietest vacuum on the market for it's size?

2-0 out of 5 stars Fein Turbo III: quiet overkill
Well, yes, it's quiet. But its industrial-sized hose is ungainly, unwieldy, and does not wrap neatly for storage. I feel like an outtake of "Anaconda" when trying to use this thing to vacuum out a car interior.

There are no accessories---wand, brush, crevice tool---with this unit, so you have to buy the ones for the Turbo II and use a step-down adaptor. And of course everything is friction-fit, so things come apart just when you are upside down wedged under a Porsche dashboard.

Finally, the standard cloth filter is quickly clogged to the point where the vacuum works like one in the Two Wild And Crazy Guys routine on "Saturday Night Live" in which Steve Martin and Dan Ackroyd have to pour the contents of ashtrays into the vacuum hose: "To have such a fine wackyoom back in Bratislava you would have to be a very high member of the Communist Party!" The di$po$able paper bag$ seem to be an improvement. . . but before I switched to them I actually had the experience of turning off the vacuum only to see all the tiny bits of plastic and solder and wire and pop rivets come cascading back out of the hose!

Bottom line: I wish I still had my old Milwaukee shop vac, or even the Sears household cannister that I banished to the garage. On the other hand, with the Fein, maybe I can keep what's left of my hearing. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Necessary part for the Fein Turbo vacuums
If you're doing woodworking or sanding, you need the HEPA filter (see my review of that part). To install the HEPA filter, you need this part.

It came with no instructions but was not hard to figure out. Just takes a little force to get the screw into the hole in the flange (from the cup side). The flange fits into one end of the HEPA filter, and the screw locks the filter/flange/screw "assembly" in place. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice combo, but expensive at Amazon
This is an outstanding combination for dustless sanding.I got mine from Coastal tools for $559.95 ($170.00 less than Amazon)

4-0 out of 5 stars Great idea, but reliability issues
I worked in a cabinet shop that did an ongoing production run of solid-surface bank teller counters, and for surfacing and polishing the tops, they used these Fein vacuum sanders. They were very effective, and kept that miserable Corian dust down to a very respectable minimum. However, it seemed as though they spent nearly as much time tinkering with the sanders trying to make them work decently as they did actually using them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fein Sander vs Bosch 3727DVS.
At the risk of being the odd man out. I just came from the WoodWorks2002 show at the Ft Washington PA Center. Top names were there demonstrating, as well as vendors with their wares. Fortunately the Fein sander vac combination, with all of the Fein sanders were there to use. The rep attached each of the sanders to the latest Turbo III vac. As an owner of a Bosch 3727DVS 6" sander, which is twice the money of their regular line, but less than half the cost of the Fein, I noticed that the Fein models, had vibration delivered to your hands. I had so so feelings about the Bosch sander, but after using the Fein, I must admit, I am now a lot fonder of my Bosch. The Fein did remove the material rapidly from the stock. I thought the Bosch removed material quickly also. Without a side by side comparison, it would be tough to tell any differences. The only problem with the Fein is the vibration would give me discomfort after using it for awhile. I know this sounds unbelievable after reading the other reviews that state they did not have a problem with vibration, even after hours of use. The vibration next to the Bosch model was substantial in comparison. It was that way with both of the Fein sanding models. He did not hook up the air driven model, stating it was the same as the electric, and did not have a compressor to feed it.
The odd thing is that I was talking to someone else at the store that had a Fein sanding system, and he mentioned the vibration to me. I did not prompt him for that information. A conversation broke out near a router station, and it drifted into sanders. He said, "I have the Fein sander, and the vibration is a problem." I immediately responded that I noticed the same thing.
I own a Fein RT-1800 router, see my review, "Simply put, this is the very best", and I also have the Fein Multimaster, with their pro cut, and extra individual blades, and loads of sandpaper boxes. I love the Fein quality.
The dust capturing feature is something that the Bosch has also. Holes in the bottom of the sanding pad and paper, allow the vacuum to suck up the dust. Fein advertises that it picks up 99 percent of the dust. A small amount of dust that is generated at the edges of the disc, escape the draw of the vacuum. The Bosch does the same thing.
The Fein Turbo vac is a very nice unit. It doesn't complain when the air flow is limited. It has an independent cooling air flow. I use a Sears 6 1/4 HP model that is designed for a ton of airflow. Hooking it up to the small flow of the sander, is like trying to breathe through a straw. What I did was to hook up the 2 1/2" airline to the outlet, which is smaller. I let it leak. The extra air that is released around the outside of the inlet nozzle, successfully draws that 1% of dust that escapes the edges of the pad. Wahlah, complete dust capture. Noisy in comparison, but complete.
The Fein turbo vac has the advantage of being super quiet, auto run when you start the sander (the sander plugs into an outlet on the vac, so it knows when it turns on) and is designed specifically for the flow levels of sanding.
I know I will receive a lot of flak stating that it vibrates, especially since the other reviewers are obviously professionals, and did not notice a problem with that. I did not use it for a long period of time, but the vibration was very noticeable. The Bosch 6" is substantially smoother.
The other thing worth mentioning is that the 8" Fein had a tendency to dance across the wood, when riding flat, whereas the smaller model gave you a more stable ride. It is capable of hovering without pulling you erratically. Either sander you could ever so lightly tilt to one edge, minutely off of plane, and get a stable ride, but then you are doing more digging. The perfectly flat ride, will not dig, and gives you the maximum work surface at one time. So the smaller model gives you more of the advantage of a flat sheet sander, than the 8" model does. The Bosch 6" gives you that kind of stability at all speeds. Maybe their is something inherent in the 6" disc that makes for a more stable ride.
I must admit the Fein cut a lot of material very quickly. The package is very quiet. I know from my other Fein equipment that it is built to last. For those reasons, I gave it 5 stars.
I'm overly sensitive to vibration, because I was using an inexpensive vibrating sander, that gave me throbbing fingers after 20 minutes of use. The Bosch was a dream in comparison, so when I did a hands on with the Fein, I was surprised. It was a lot better than the vibrating sander, but not as smooth as the Bosch.
If you do a decent amount of sanding, and have a hard time scuffing up the cash for the Fein unit, check out the Bosch 3727DVS. It's twice the money of the standard Bosch line, but is an impressive unit. Hope this helps. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Fein Dust Bag Mistake!!!
I almost bought the Fein 9-11-20 vacuum with these bags but decided against it. I discovered the bags go with another model and WILL NOT work with this smaller model. I did not want to discover what other accessories in this order would have been messed up.

This inventory mistake was pointed out in December 2002 by another customer and has not yet been corrected. Very sloppy, Amazon.

Thanks to Froogle.com, I will now be buying this item and its bags at CoastalToo.com. The price (including s&h) is the same but without the headaches.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good for Nasty Work
We bought and used this filter on our wet-dry vac for cleaning up our house. We're in the middle of some serious rehab, restoring our 1904 house to its original charm, grace and majestic beauty. (estimated completiondate is 2097)

In the meantime, this filter does a good job of cleaningup the big ugly messes.

Before, when using our wet-dry vac without thisfilter (we used the traditional filters and even a paper filter) a cloud ofdust would rise up out of the vacuum when you started it up.

With thisfilter in place, there are no large gray clouds looming on the horizon uponstart up.

It says it filters down to 1 micron. The eye of an averagesewing needle is 750 microns across and the period in written text at 10font is about 400 microns. 1 micron is pretty tiny.

But as I understand, installing this filter on a wet-dry vac doesn't make it a HEPA vacuum, simply because there are other places on the vacuum for air leaks tooccur.

However, as a rehabber, it is a TREMENDOUS help to add this filteronto your wet-dry vac. The filter we purchased is not suitable for wetapplications. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars These attachments are expensive but useful!
I have owned my Turbo II vacuum for a number of years now, and I will admit that I was never willing to spend the money for these attachments. It is true that there are many lesser vacuums out there that include the tools, but I always told myself that I would rather have an awesome shop vac and no tools versus a so-so vac with tools.Recently, I finally coughed up the money for these attachments and I am thrilled to have so much more versatility when using a favored tool.I have had absolutely zero problems with any of the attachments. It is true that there are no "positive lock" mechanisms on the mating pieces, yet I have never had the attachments come apart even after hours of continuous use.I have cleaned our cars, sucked up sawdust, and vanquished cobwebs all to my great satisfaction. The adjustable "bristles" on the floor attachment make pulling stuff off of carpet (such as dust/dirt/woodchips in a car trunk) a painless task.

If there is a downside, it is the lack of a convenient way to store these tools "onboard" the Turbo II machine (as some other shop vacs offer). For now I am keeping the attachments in a drawer and the metal extension wands lean in a corner. But I guess this is more my problem than a criticism of this tool set.Overall I am thrilled with the performance of this product and I recommend its purchase without reservation!

2-0 out of 5 stars Adequate tools; poor value
I am disappointed in the Fein tool kit for the following reasons:the devices are lacking a basic positive-lock connection feature (often incorporated in the form of that classic little round-topped chrome button that springs up into a hole on the mating piece), and they generally are (aside from the floor attachment and chrome tubes) very light gauge material.I have a ... little Eureka "Mighty Mite" compact vacuum, and its tools are actually more substantial than the supposedly "industrial grade" Fein products.Ultimately I imagine these accessories will work fine, but I am actually amazed at the high price relative to what is provided....Final complaint - I really can't imagine that anyone who orders the Fein vacuum cleaner wouldn't want the tools - they should come with the machine.Separating them out seems to be a way of keeping the machine's cost down - ultimately an artificial savings.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Product
The Wet/Dry kit works great and was produced with a higher quality material than I imagined.I was also leary about buying from Amazon and using the free shipping but, the kit shipped within two days and arrived within five days. All in all, shopping at Amazon couldn't be easier and the Fein Wet/Dry kit is worth every penny. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Useful piece of rubber
I use this stepped rubber tube often between a Ridgid 6" R/O sander and the hose from my venerable Fein Turbo Two shop vac. Once inserted firmly in the vacuum adaptor provided by Ridgid the resulting tight seal makes for a very efficient dustless vacuum setup.

Unfortunately at times it seems a bit too efficient with the sander motion being constrained by the powerful suction of the Fein vac. I modified the step adaptor by drilling a half-inch hole in the exposed part that is between the sander and vac hose and the resulting "air leak" allows for a good balance of suction and sander mobility. The result is WAY better than sanding without a vacuum set-up. Would recommend. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Better deal elsewhere
The HEPA filter works great but is limited to only dry pick-up and using an expensive special paper bag which does make for easy clean up but does limit versatility.

I bought a Cleanair Gortex HEPA filter from Lowes for $29.99 that fits the Red-Coded Craftsman vacuums. This forms a perfect seal and works for wet and dry pick-up.You only need to either plug the hole in the bottom of the filter with a plastic plug you can get at Lowes or any car parts store or use a 3/8" x 2.5" carriage bolt, nylon washer, and wing nut to more securely fasten the filter.Better filter, better price, easier wet/dry vacuuming.

3-0 out of 5 stars Expensive, but they're your sinuses and lungs...
When you buy a woodworking tool, the manual doesn't warn you, but if you do a bit of research you'll discover that prolonged exposure to finer dust (smaller than 1 micron, or the size of smoke particles) can lead to sinus and lung problems; some serious. Most shop vacuums come with filters that retain dust as small as 5 microns (a piece of copier paper is about 100 microns thick). If you want to protect yourself, you need a HEPA filter, which will retain particles smaller than 1 micron.

This filter is pretty expensive, but without it, why buy the vacuum? For woodworking and sanding, a shop vacuum without a HEPA filter is probably a waste of money.

Commercial dust collectors large enough for larger power tools, that remove particles smaller than 2 microns, are not yet available at home shop prices. So even with a HEPA filter, if you're using a power saw, planer, etc., you should also wear a respirator with HEPA filters and have something to clean your shop's air before it goes into the rest of your house (and before you remove your respirator). The alternative is to shell out more than the cost of the power tool for a suitable industrial grade dust collector, or to build your own (there are instructions and parts on the Internet).

5-0 out of 5 stars works well
I was concerned that the HEPA filter would reduce the vacuum.Although it must somewhat, I could not detect it.Also the filter is protected by the cloth filter that comes with the machine.Very nice! ... Read more

Editorial Review

Impressive power, quiet operation, and easy portability makethis little vac a real find at a decent price. Right from the bottomup, it's a winner. Five smooth casters won't let it tip; the click-onhose can be attached and detached easily with one hand; and the motorunit doesn't sit in any specific position, thereby eliminating all thatawkward fumbling it takes to seat it. Two sturdy clips hang onto themotor from the canister. The hose is a generous 10-1/2 feet long, andthat doesn't even count the two extension wands. It has 90 inches ofstatic water lift, and Fein lists the airflow at 116 cfm--darnedrespectable for a unit that's compact, incredibly quiet (at 63decibels), and comes loaded with accessories. It also has a 16-footpower cord, a nice plus. It's light and easily maneuvered at just under18 pounds, and--not that this is important in a vac--mighty stylishlooking, too. --Kris Jensen-Van Heste ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Fein Vacuum
This is a wonderful product, BUT the bags are pricey, if you can get them. Amazon/tool crib are you listening????
Either stock the supplies to back up the products you are selling or you should probably not sell them anymore!!!
If you sense that I am upset, you've got it right.
Have been waiting for bags for two months now. I'm getting weekly e-mails asking me to approve yet another delay.
OK, now I've vented. If only they'd send me those bags

4-0 out of 5 stars They get you on the back end
I've owned this vacuum for about 3 years now and I really like it.Not as powerful as the big Sears unit I have but much less noise. He's the deal, almost $9.00 for a replacement paper bag! What the heck is that about?I can see paying $9.00 for a three pack but not for each bag!Give me a break, it's a paper bag!

5-0 out of 5 stars Best purchase I've made in a long time!
I bought this a month after I bought my house in 2001.Three long years of renovations and landscaping and minor flooding, etc and I love this thing. The suction power is better than anything else I've used and is a great deal for the money.I'm so glad I didn't give in to the ones in the local home improvement store.
A couple tips:
1. Clean the screen.CLEAN THE SCREEN!There's a little round screen in the hose assembly that fills up and lowers the suction power.
2.There is a hose clamp and clip on basket listed on fein.com but I don't need them, you might.
3.Yup.The filters are a bit pricey.Even though they fill up quickly if you're sucking up fine sanding etc but they clean out very nicely with an air hose.I'm sure they aren't as effective that way but it works fein for me :-)
