Yee Haaa!
Pros: Brigss & Stratton engine starts on the first or second pull every time. Powerful and well built. Should last a long while.

Cons: Too light! Even with the accessory chassis weights this tiller is too light for "serious" sod busting.

The Super Bronco requires two or more passes (in my soil) to properly till. I suggest following the owner's manual instructions to start at 2 inches and progressively deepen the till. If you try to go deep on the first pass this tiller will show you why it has the name "Super Bronco"!

The Super Bronco is well made and will run all day without a whimper. I've used mine to till my entire front lawn and she just chugged along without balking. Once your garden has been tilled subsequent planting seasons will only require a single pass to prepare your soil. pretty good
I bought this last year 2002. I live on a hill and wanted the tracks for better traction and thought the only other one on the market was the Honda, which was too expensive. Its been very reliable so far but doesn't throw the snow as far as it claims unless its a blizzard. The remote pitch control is great but only goes all the way up or down. If you do an inbetween the pitch automatically move back to the up position. It also uses up alot of gas, but the dual start, electric and pull, is very reliable. It clears out the driveway pretty quick. The hand warmers are a good feature also. I am surprised they discontinued this. the power steering feature is very good. ... Read more

Good Value, easy starting
It's been two full years since I wrote the initial review on this mower and it contiues to give excellent service.My lawn is about 1/2 acre so there is a lot of cutting with a push mower from April to Sept.I have changed the oil twice in two seasons but have not chaged the spark plug or the air filter.After sitting in the garage unused for five month this past winter it started after about 3 pulls.Having the priming bulb helps a lot.

My previous mower was a Homlite rear bagger which I paid over [money]. I had the mower for 9 years and had to replace the bag once and the pull cord twice because it was so difficult to start.Compared to the Homlite the mulching Yardman is so much easier to use. During the season it usually starts with two pulls without priming and I don't have to empty the bag. With a 6 HP engine it even strong enough to mulch several big pile of leaves that have collected in the woods at back of my lot.

Last year I purchased an inexpensive mower blade sharpner attachment for my power drill([money] at the local ACE hardware).It does a pretty good job taking out the nicks and maintaining the cutting edge. So far I've not paid to have the blade sharpened.This YardMan has been a very low maintainance mower for me.

Good value, some are better
Had this mower for 5 years now. It has provided good cutting and bagging for my med/small yard (.45 acres some of which is natural areas).

Like its power and simple design avoiding the complications of self propelled systems. The side bag is a bit of a pain. If you do a lot of bagging, you may want to go with a rear bagger.

Have had to take it in for reparis 2-3 times, replace the front wheels (plastic originals cracked). Most of the paint is peeling off now but it still cuts good. Will buy a Toro next time (at twice+ the cost)

Raw power, excellent mulching
If you're looking for a basic, no-frills mower with the power to mulch seriously overgrown grass, this is it. It starts easily, runs well, and I've never been able to bog it down, even when my lawn is starting to look like rain forest. Construction quailty is very solid, and the ball bearing wheels should spin wobble-free for many years to come.

The only limitation is the optional side bag, which I've only used a few times. It gets in the way, clogs easily, doesn't hold much, and is inconvient to empty. If you intend to bag frequently, look at rear baggers instead.

So, I'll give the mower 5 stars, with the suggestion that you skip the bag. END ... Read more

Great mulch maker if you baby it
My hubby bought me this so I could mulch all the leaves, branches and faded perennials from my gardens.It does a good job with dry garden waste such as leaves, stems, or branches.However I have to feed it very slowly when I try to mulch anything that is stringy like daylily leaves, irises or grasses.These stringy items clog the motor FAST especially if they are wet.And stringy things tend to go throughthe chipper in one piece, thus defeating the purpose.The leaves and branches come out sufficiently mulched to decompose into a nice compost.But you can't fill the chute with leaves or it gets clogged so I basically feed it a handful at a time.Definitely wear eye and ear protection with this machine.A fine homeowner tool that beats having to rent one.

Designed specifically for use with MTD Yard-Man 300/400 series lawn tractors, the system is a nightmare to assemble. Have your patience and tools ready, and a couple of hours to spare. Once assembled, however, you will possess a truly superior grass catcher. A wide 7-inch-diameter side-discharge tube, made of durable plastic, attaches to the lawn tractor and curves around to the rear, where you suspend the two 6-1/2-bushel grass catcher bags. Made of sturdy polyester, the bags don't drag on the ground, unlike many grass catchers, and a strong plastic collection hood swings down to cover them. On the downside, once you've gone through the trouble of putting it all together, you're not going to want to detach it any time soon. The bags do too drag!
This system is a nightmare all the way around because it is designed so it is tilted downward from the MTD 400 frame so the bags drag on the ground and neither I nor any of the servicemen I've consulted can do anything about it.
Because they drag, the bags wear through around the edges in about a month's time, and because they drag duct tape is not the answer.
Fortunately, even with holes in them and after the dump handles break off, because they drag on the ground, you can with care continue to catch the grass and empty it for about a season. If you buy replacement bags from the dealer they cost about $75 a pair and you have to mount them on the frames. Wholesale on the Internet you can get a pair for about $27-35.
This tractor isn't made any more and when something other than routine maintenance comes up the dealers just shrug and roll their eyes. The deck takes four hours to remove if you know what you're doing. Now that transmission parts are wearing out, and you can't get them it is good to reconsider if you are considering buying one of these machines used.
If you are really determined however, I can make you such a deal....

Wrong grasscatcher model.
I bought a grass catcher for my Toro lawn tractor, made by the Arnold Corporation.Model:OEM-190-602.Today, i tried to install it!First off, the framework was bent, where the liftable hood is screwed on!After much pulling in the bench vise, i finally got it to close!After that, i tried installing the tube and collector thing that goes on the deck! The rubber bungees were too long! Then the bungees that hold the tube parts together were too long! And the tube was too long! And the name was wrong: "Fast attach"! And, the hood wouldn't open far enough to get the grass bags out!So, i guess i'm stuck with the thing, or i have about 10 hours of modifications to make it fit!The place where i bought it sent two "scalawags" out to install it, but 10 minutes later, they threw their hands up, tossed the pieces back into the box-andLEFT!
So, what do i do now? Please advise!

Poor customer service
The low rating on this product is aimed at the customer service/warranty associated with the product group. I bought a MTD lawn tractor 5 months ago and within 31/2 months the thread on the shoulder bolt striped out resulting in the idler pulley falling out of position. I called MTD for the location of a authorized service location in my area. The automated answering machine gave me the name and number for the service dealer. I confirmed with the service provider that the defect was a warranty repair. It took a month to get the tractor fixed and when I went to pick it up I was told that it wasn't under warranty and if I wanted to pick up the tractor I would have to pay for the repairs. I reminded him that he had confirmed warranty at the time I brought it in. At that time he said it was to hard to procees the warranty. I contacted MTD and the service rep said he would contact the service provider and call me back. He never returned the call so I called again. This time a service rep told me that they didn't tell me were to take the tractor for repair and that the choice had been mine. I told him that the automated system for service had that dealer as the authorized service provider in this area. He said he didn't care what it said, that the choice was still mine for where I took it. He did say he would call them to get the other side of the complaint and call me back. I went ahead and paid the charges for the repair because by that time I needed it. I did get the nut and bolt that had been replaced and after measuring them found that both components were grossly out of industrial specifications. The thread engagement for that combination should have been about 77%, the bolt and nut used on the tractor had less than 50%. With a third less thread emgagement the bolt would stripe at a much lower torque than normal.The components used on this tractor can be manufactured cheaper and faster than standard fasteners. The service rep from MTD, surprisingly, did call back and told me that the reason the warranty was not allowed was because I hadn't supplied Proof of Purchase. I told him I had and that the date was on the receipt I received from the service provider. I informed him of measurements on the defective material and the impact on the failure mode. Some of the numbers were technical in nature so I told him he should confirm them with his engineering dept. His main concern was that I had the defective parts and he wanted to know how I got them. I told him I had just ask for them. He said he would investigate further and call me back. Guess what? No call. It's also the last MTD product I ever buy.

Integrity and Speed
I was reluctant at first to make this purchase over the net. I am, however, sure glad I did. The process went fast and painless. The equipment was exactly as I expected plus more. The price was much better than if I purchesed this lawn tractor locally. The speed of delivery and the friendly help of the delivery personnel was a big plus. I have already used this equipment and find it to be of good quality and ease of use.
Keep up the good work. Lastly, I've noticed a customer service availability, I don't need them, all is fine here.

The Yard Bug may look cute, but don't get so caught up in its curvaceous lines that you neglect its enviable design and practicality. This is a strong little machine with some unusual and innovative qualities. Perch on the comfortable yellow seat and you can control the gas, brakes, and blade engager with your feet. The ignition, the throttle (tortoise to hare), the gears (forward, neutral, and reverse), and the blade height adjuster (with five choices, from low to high) are all within easy reach of your hands. Perhaps the best feature of all on the Yard Bug is the grass catcher. Lift up the seat on most lawn tractors and you find a battery. Lift up the seat of the Yard Bug and half the metal chassis lifts with it, revealing the ingenious grass catcher beneath. Great little Machine.
I received my Yard Bug in a week from the time I ordered it. The Trucking Company called me two days before delivery and I explained to them that this was a private residence and I had no way to unload it if they sent a tractor trailer or regular box truck. After hearing my situation, they sent it out on a lift-gate truck and used a palate- jack to take it from the street to my garage. I followed the instructions, put the battery on charge while I ran some errands for a couple of hours, hooked up the battery when I got home and drove it away. Put it through it's paces for about a halh hour ahd am real satisfied.

Poor Quality
This "Bug" is really poor. I bought a yardman and experienced a lot of trouble: Gasline leakage, engine failed to start, etc. So it is not a best buy for your choice! ... Read more

This is great

A $99 lawn mower will work just as well. I have 5 mature trees on our lot. I envisioned watching most of the leaves fall and go out and vacuum them up and save a bunch of time. Great concept but if it rains, as it does in the fall, forget about this thing picking up wet leaves. If you went out every couple days and the leaves were dry it would probably be OK, but in that situation a $50 electric blower would do the job also. The stick chipper portion was useless, unless all your sticks are straight with no branches they will not fit down the chute. The time spent breaking the branches to fit was no time savings. I paid $400+, sold it after 1 season for $200, and I don't think it was worth that. The wife also rightfully complained it was too heavy to push, I have to agree with her. Save your money, find another way.

Yard-Man Chipper Shredder Vac Mod. 020
Purchased Mod 020 in 2000 and have used it through three seasons to vacuum leaves, acorns, grass, twigs, etc. on a 1/2 acre property. As received, unit's bag safety switch was faulty and unit would not start. Bag leaked dust around bag unloading opening that blew into operators face. Plastic motor shroud vibrated loose and required repair after second use. Unit does not have sufficient suction to pick up acorns. Modifications I made improved operation: Removed bag safety switch; installed velcro on bag unloading opening; installed plastic sweep on bottom of unit to rear of suction opening to improve pickup.
After three seasons of operation the bag needs replacing, and the starter rope broke. Overall this unit has been marginally satisfactory at doing the job of vacuuming leaves, but maintenance has been high and performance has been marginal. Considering the high initial price of $$$ the unit should perform better. However, there are no other similar units available.

I bought this product last year and the engine died within 5 minutes. I took it back to [the store] and exchanged it for another one. This time the engine lasted 10 minutes before dying.
