Editorial Review

There are now enough handheld global positioning system (GPS) receivers on the market that you can be choosy when it comes to price, features, and design. Garmin--a leading manufacturer of car, boat, and personal GPS receivers--has a complete line of eTrex handheld receivers, with our Legend falling about midrange.

Easily look up nearby services with optional downloadable details from MapSource CD-ROMs.
With Wide Area Augmentation System (WAAS) support, the Legend offers extremely accurate readings (rated to within 2 to 3 meters). (For more on WAAS, see the Frequently Asked Questions section.) A good-size screen--288 x 160 pixels--makes it easy to see location details, and the Legend redraws maps quickly when zooming in or out of a position.

Its 8 MB of memory means there is also plenty of room for waypoints, routes, and saved tracks. The Legend will hold up to 500 waypoints, complete with a name and graphical symbol, 20 routes with 50 waypoints each, and it contains slots for 10 saved tracks. You can also download maps from Garmin's MapSource CD-ROMs (thorough but expensive accessories for the GPS receiver) to see street-level or topographic detail (depending on the CD-ROM title).

Built-in exit listings show services at U.S. interstate exits.
But one of the most striking attributes of the Legend is its comfortable and efficient design. While it rests easily in the palm of either hand, it's most suited for the left hand, where its handy click-stick can be manipulated with the thumb. The click-stick works like the pencil-eraser nubbin on laptop PCs and is handy for moving through screen icons and menus. It also works as a button when pressed down.

The Legend is coated with a waterproof, rubberized plastic shell that grips nicely. Weighing in at only 5.3 ounces, it fits into a pocket or clips onto a belt loop, going almost unnoticed.

The internal trip computer of the Legend provided a range of data about our hikes and drives, including current speed, average speed, trip distance, and time traveled (both moving and stopped). For those interested in checking out their foot pace and distance traveled, it's a handy GPS to have in hand.

Our only major beef with the Legend is that the receiver sometimes seemed to grow weak. Even when it wasn't in WAAS mode (which can be tough to maintain a signal in), it dropped the signal from time to time. We even lost the signal once while walking along the streets of San Francisco--it seems that the medium-size buildings were enough to interfere with the reception.

But this only happened on a few occasions. Most of the time the well-designed Legend was able to keep us in touch with up to 12 GPS satellites for a strong-enough read to maintain a tight handle on our location. --J. Curtis

2-0 out of 5 stars Reliability Problems with the e-Trek Legend
Bought my e-Trek Legend in March 2002 for geocaching; initially it did ok, tracked well but lost signal often when under leafcover in the woods.Started noticing power shutoff problems when first turning it on;thought it was the battery connection, I'm beginning now to think it was poor/thin soldering in the manufacture. Now the click stick will only work in two of four directions. For what I paid for it, and as little as I used it, I doubt if I'll replace it with another Garmin e-Trek, they just don't seem substantial enough for hiking (to think, I cradled that thing like a baby in the woods, being careful with it!).

4-0 out of 5 stars My first one, not easy to figure out without book.
Well, so far I kind of dig it. Its not easy to manage without learning it first. Its not a "duh obvious" operating system. I am trying to figure out still how to map where I have been but not save the whole thing. I want to save just legs.

It is almost one hand useable, but some of the buttons are hard to press with one hand. It is a nice size and very easy to read. It does not come with any computer software and I am not sure how to get other maps on it yet.

I guess I need to buy additional software. Its been fun playing with it since I bought it yesterday, now I need to learn the nitty gritty.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent little unit.. Handy to have.
I've had this unit now for about a week Unit offers alot in a little package. Only Highways and State Roads on it, but shareware software on the web really made mapping possible and fun (GPS Track Maker v12). Has lots of POIs (Points of Interests) loaded from the factory.Unit seems very accurate (usually displays 18 or 25 foot accuracy in clear view of the sky).Picks up a good signal on the dash of my car.

I wound up also buying the Mapsouce CD and loaded up all of CT. Fine details to all minor roads and points of interests.
It did wipe out the factory maps some (noticed that channel or river bouys no longer in the unit, but the factory map can be reloaded at any time from Garmin's website).

For the price ($130.00 thru Amazon) it's a fantastic unit. Don't bother with the Etrex Yellow and shoot for the Legend.
    Mapsource was $74 on line..

Even though the unit comes with a comport cord, go with a dual 12v & com connection in one.I'm running it indoors plugged into a 12v power supply.Unit is also good on Battery life too.

2-0 out of 5 stars DIsappointing machine
The hospital provided me with this monitor after my kidney transplant. Right away, readings were 20-30 points too high. Luckily, I didn't pay for it.

It gets two stars only because I always assume it's 20 points too high and subtract.

1-0 out of 5 stars Found it useless
Bought one for my Mom who has moderately high BP.When we tested her BP with this instrument, it showed her BP as 165/80!! We took her to her Doctor to get a checkup done.Measurement using their Sphygmomanometer showed 132/75.We were relieved that she was OK but were upset that this instrument would give a reading that was so off.

We returned it.

If you are a serious user, consider buying a Sphygmomanometer.

4-0 out of 5 stars I have great blood pressure, for those who were worried.....
Okay, I think I must have joked too many times with potential dates and amours about their heart and blood pressure...So what popped up at Christmas a blood pressure monitor.

I must say it works great!!! It comes with a nifty little booklet on Managing High Blood Pressure. It explains the basics: What it is, What it does to your body, and What you can do about it.

It is very easy to use: pretty much just put the cuff on like the directions, relax, press the on button, wait for the heart symbol, and then press start. Easy as can be, until the cuff starts feeling like your arm is being squeezed off.

This monitor gives the systolic and diastolic pressure along with the pulse rate. This monitor even keeps memory of your readings. Kewl, huh!!!

So if you want something simple and easy buy this one I have found it fun to take my blood pressure during the day after all kinds of activities:)

I can absolutely say I am in great health, blood pressure health that is,110 over 70. So take care of your heart and blood pressure.

Stay prepared and informed with the FR 200 from Grundig. If the power goes out and batteries aren't available, the FR 200 can function for up to an hour with only one minute of hand cranking. Its built-in generator means that even in the most desperate situations, you'll still have access to local news and information--as well as to news from around the world. The unit's four-band tuning receives AM, FM, SW1 (shortwave 1), and SW2 stations, and an included rechargeable battery pack provides reliable, renewable, internal power for everyday use.

The radio houses a 2.5-inch speaker. A .125-inch stereo headphone jack affords private listening, a built-in touch light comes in handy during lights-out emergencies, and you can dial in hard-to-tune stations with the unit's dedicated fine-tuning knob. A 4.5V DC jack allows an external power connection (power adapter not included).

A 360-degree telescope antenna provides the best radio signal for FM and SW, while a built-in AM antenna provides high sensitivity for AM reception. The FR 200 can run on three LR6 or AA batteries. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Broadcast Rx Only-OK quality
I'm a communications engineer & have designed radios This one is intended to be used for broadcast reception.Forget SSB or CW.It does drift a bit - but that is in part a result of trying to minimize power consumption (and cranking).I was impressed by the fact that the antenna is properly matched nearly everywhere in the SW band (as evidenced by the fact that touching the antenna does NOT increase signal volume. If you see that effect - the antenna is mismatched and your sensitivity is poor.Doubt me? connect an antenna 'matchbox' (impedance matcher) between an equivalent length of wire to the standard radio mounted antenna and such a radio - either use the ext antenna connections or collapse the stock antenna and use a clip. Now tune the matchbox for maximum background noise (indicating more RF is getting into the radio).Tune around and you'll then hear 3 times the number of signals that you heard with the standard radio mounted antenna. The ones you could hear before are now much louder too.A "Freeplay" radio is a typical example of this antenna matching design error. The Grundig is much smaller, lighter, runs (i believe) longer than the freeplay for an equiv amount of cranking, is half the price and more sensitive (on HF).(The Freeplay drifts too btw - i have 2 of them). If you want a no drift single sideband or CW radio get a AOR 3000.At $1000, it's out of the price range of the Grundig. It also doesn't have a crank. Why?the synthesized and microprocessed circuitry of the AOR draws WAY too much power - you'd need a treadmill, not a handcrank. The flashlight is handy, but not a substitute for a proper flashlight (torch). You can find the radio in the dark in a's making noise. You can then find the flashlight..(it's built into the radio) - using it you can then find your 3 D cell Kleig light. This is a low price emerg radio built to fill a specific need - which imho it does quite well.. It is NOT the equiv of a $1000 - $3000 communications receiver.I own a couple of those too, being in the emergency comms/homeland defense business. They have their places too - but one has to consider what class of equipment one is dealing with - and for what it was designed.

5-0 out of 5 stars I want to make a correction!
I wish to correct an earlier statement about this product!I mistakenly suggested that this product was garbage, turns out that Radio Shack gave me the wrong AC Adapter plug not once but twice.

The problem has since been corrected and the radio works fine!I highly recommend this product and take back any earlier comment.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed with performance
No, the FR200 is not an expensive radio, but I expected more from any product Grundig was willing to put its brand name on. I bought this radio to have with me when I was working in the yard, fishing, etc. The problem is that it drifts off frequency so badly and in such a short period of time that I have to keep it nearby to keep adjusting it. I guess there is a lot of truth to the adage that you get what you pay for. ... Read more

If you're like us, you've crammed more tools into your workshop than can really fit. Luckily, an HTC universal mobile base (or two) can make a world of difference. The base is sturdy and easy to assemble, plus--unlike any other mobile base on the market--it adjusts to fit virtually any large woodworking machine, forming squares from 12 by 12 to 36 by 36 inches and rectangles as big as 20 by 52 inches. Holes at 1-inch increments let you choose any shape in between, and wheels at all four corners make it easy to maneuver. Roll one tool in; roll another tool out. I had purchase this for my JET Table Saw. It works great. It worked so well I purchased another one for my Bansaw. The flexibilty in moving your tools around is a great convienence. I would recommend this product to anyone.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not for Heavy Table Saws
I bought an HTC2000 mobile base to go under a 400 lb. table saw.It couldn't raise the table saw comfortably even though it is rated to handle that much weight.I ended up swapping with the big Shop Fox base that's rated at 600 lbs. from my band saw and put the HTC2000 on the band saw.It handles the 200 lbs. of the band saw just fine. The HTC2000 is a good mobile base, but I wouldn't put over 300 lbs. on it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Does what it's supposed to do
I couldn't pass up a 1HP 4-speed 14" HF bandsaw for a little over $200 on sale. I realized the need for mobility of this tool in my shop and looked for reasonably priced mobile stands. The HTC2000 is rated for much more weight than I needed and would accomodate a larger base of another tool if it didn't work out for the bandsaw.

No problem - just one 14" brace front and back and one 18" each side made the stand fit perfectly. It takes a few minutes to put all the nuts and bolts in but the metal is strong and the wheels roll smoothly. When the base is not elevated for moving, there are rubber feet that keep the base steady. The two swivel casters have one step lever each instead of one center lever for raising. I don't see a problem with using it on a closed base bandsaw; the low mounted motor weight is more than the higher weight. I think the base is made well and does what it is supposed to do. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great generator and easy to install yourself
I was a little apprehensive in deciding to install the Generac myself after reading some of the reviews. I took the plunge and found out that there was nothing to worry about. Before I bought it, I checked with my propane supplier and found out that the gas pressure their regulator supplies was within Generac's guidelines (11"-14" water column is pretty standard).

It took about 2.5 weeks to arrive after ordering it and came by ABF freight (semi truck). I was able to unload it from the truck with my tractor and pallet forks. I first had to convert it to propane with the supplied orifice, etc. which took about 40 min. I chose to pour a concrete pad which isn't required, but I thought it would be a more stable base. This took 3 hours.

Next was hanging the transfer box and running the pre-wired 30' BX conduit to the location where it will go through your wall. This took about 2 hours. Since I am running it on propane, I took advantage of the offer of a free upgrade to 15KW (nat. gas runs at 13KW) from Generac by calling their toll-free number. It was difficult to get through to a person (I had to lie to the automated answerer saying I wanted to be a Generac dealer), but once through, it was shipped free of charge within a week. This upgrade requires the swapping out of the 60A breaker on the generator with a supplied 70A and the replacement of the pre-wired 30' BX conduit and the conduit that goes between the generator and the external box with another that has heavier gauge wire for the additional amps. This switchover took 1 hour. Installing the external electrical box and wiring it up took an hour also.

Next, I had to run about 20' (with associated valves and fittings) of additional LP line from where mine left off in the house to the generator. This took me and a helper 6.5 hours.

The wiring of the designated emergency circuits was quite easy due to the color-coded, tagged wires that are supplied with the transfer switch. I removed the black wires from my existing breakers (and removed the breakers) and pigtailed them to the new wires/breakers in the transfer switch box. All of this wiring took 2 hours. I then followed all of the testing procedures checking voltages with a mulitimeter and performing the engine break-in (which takes about 4 hours). After the break-in, I changed the oil (with a required all-synthetic oil) and the filter and now it is ready to go!

If you are going to install this yourself prepare to spend about 18-20 hours, depending on how much gas line you have to run. Also, some things that you will have to buy that aren't really mentioned in the literature are: Automotive battery (550CCA min.) $58, 8' ground rod/cable $13, Circuit breaker that fits your existing breaker box to feed the transfer switch panel $20 (mine was Square-D which are expensive normally, but I got it on ebay), LP pipe/valves $50, Misc. conduit straps, etc. $5, Concrete pad (Quikcrete from Home Depot)$40. Total=$186

I have had some experience with wiring and construction and am generally handy with tools. If you have that general level of ability, this shouldn't be a problem for you. It sure beats the $900 that Home Depot wants to install it "professionally".

As far as quality goes, this thing is built like a tank. Everything looks and feels to be heavy duty. Case is weather proof and well thought out, generally. (I wish they would have a bigger battery compartment so I could have gotten a 600+CCA battery in, though) I was really worried about the noise; no need to be. I placed it near a window of the family room about 2' from the wall and only had to turn up the TV slightly when it was running. A low hum is what it sounds like through the wall. Outside, you don't have to shout to be heard while within 10' of it with all covers closed, but don't stay too close for too long with the top open and the front cover off because you could go deaf! This thing is loud without the sound attenuation afforded by the enclosure.

It had no problem powering everything that is hooked up to it during testing: Well pump, Heat Pump/AC, propane furnace, 2 sump pumps, 2 refrigerators, 1 deepfreezer, several lighting and outlet citcuits, TV/VCR, microwave, septic aerator/sump pump combination. The lights dimmed momentarily when the heat pump kicked in, but other than that, you can't tell you're "off the grid".

Now we're just waiting for the power to go out.

Good Luck!

We've had this unit for almost 2 years now, currently, we are in the middle of our worst ice storm ever, and the electric has been down for over three days, the 15kw Guardian has been running nonstop. The temperature outside is near zero and we are nice and toasty warm inside, running virtually everything, heat, well pump, kitchen appliances, treadmill, garage door openers, lights, etc. This power outage which will last another week they say, but has caused barely a hickup for us in our daily routine, aside from shelling out the $45 or so in propane we are going through every day.Small price to pay for safety and normalcy.

Editorial Review

Bosch's 1617EVSPK is a strong entry in the 2-1/4-horsepowercombination router market. Solid, all-magnesium construction makes theBosch durable and lightweight, while special touches, such as woodenhandles on the fixed base and contoured, soft-grip handles on the plungebase, add to the comfort of users and give the tool a look ofdistinction lacking in some of its competitors. Of course, looks areonly skin deep, and this router has plenty to offer below the surface aswell. At its heart, a powerful 12 amp, 2-1/4-horsepower motor deliversconsistent results at variable speeds of 8,000 to 25,000 rpm. Theexclusive precision centering design ensures bits are perfectly centeredin the router base, a handy feature for maintaining accurate cut lines.A wider-than-average base opening provides superior visibility andallows the Bosch to accept larger bits, while a micro bit-depthadjustment system makes fine-tuning fast and easy. Unlike manycomparable routers, the Bosch 1617EVSPK is designed to move from base tobase without the use of tools. Instead, it clamps solidly into place forquick and easy transfers. What's more, the motor never rotates whileadjusting depths, allowing you to stow the power cord on either sidewhere it's out of the way. --Carl Thress ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Information on switch problem
Ok, Do you want to put this whole switch issue to bed?I took my non-functioning switch out last night and disassembled it.The switch is fine, there are no electronics inside, it is a standard toggle switch. The problem is it is the wrong switch for this application. When I opened mine there was at least 1/8-1/4 teaspoon of saw dust packed in there. So the only problem was that the contacts were being held open because there was saw dust between therm.I just cleaned all the dust out and put it back together and it worked fine.

There is a new Bosch part number for the replacement switch, which indicates a design change.I hope the new switch is sealed, but I don't know yet because I haven't received mine in the mail.If it is not I'm going to look to find one that is the right size and amp that is sealed and it should stop this issue altogether.

I think mine failed sooner than most because I have used it in my router table more than free hand routing and my table has an enclosed area for the router which does get pretty dusty, I think static draws the dust in from the outside because the switch body is pretty well sealed from the inside workings of the router.

Good Luck

4-0 out of 5 stars Awsome router kit
Simply put, this combo kit is the one to get.Powerful and very easy to use.The soft start and variable speed are very nice. The case is comes with is pretty nice, bits and wrenches have a spot inside as well.I've only logged about 15 hours with it and have only one complaint, the switch stopped working.I took it apart and cleaned it up and it worked fine again. But other than that I've loved every minute with it.I'm a carpenter and furniture making hobbiest.Definately worth buying.Bosches portable table saw is very good also.

The HyLoft overhead storage system is a clever, clever concept, executed neatly. Just one 4-by-4-foot unit give you 35 cubic feet of storage that space previously wasn't there. Imagine installing these on either side of the garage door opener: you'll create storage space out of nothing. Multiple units can be aligned to fit nearly any space, in a L-shape or T-shape, for whatever available ceiling space you have, and each unit holds up to 250 pounds. The open grate design allows you to see what’s stored above--a feature we really like. The finish is clean-looking and super durable and comes with a lifetime warranty. Don’t be intimidated by the thought of installation, either--only the most basic skills are needed. Tools required are standard household fare: hammer, adjustable wrench, stud finder, and drill. 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Storage System
The Hyloft is perfect for us, as we have a high ceiling in the garage and lots of things we want to save.I ordered 2 systems thru Amazon and initially tried to install them.I watched the video yet found the studs to be very difficult to locate.

Via the Hyloft website, I found a local operation to install them. The company, however, needs to make money as well and required me to have at least 4 units to install versus the 2 I bought here.I completely understood, especially given the drive time and fuel costs.

The Hyloft system itself is a great way to expand your storage and provide an archival system for things you just can't throw away.

I'm very happy I worked through an expert company who installs these daily. It took them less than 2 hours to install 4.They had to drill thru steel to access the wood stud, which was even hard for them. They Hylofts are now perfectly aligned along the ceiling which looks very clean. The extra cost was well worth it.

5-0 out of 5 stars THESE ARE THE BEST!
I just recently gutted my garage and played my own version of Clean Sweep. Couldn't have done it without these. We installed 3 and it took several hours but WELL WORTH IT! Highly recommended, you'll be more than pleased!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Space Saver!!
I bought two of these and cannot believe how much they hold.It took my husband three hours to install with much of that time finding the first stud.Someone wrote a review about their unit only having two support beams, but each of mine has four as pictured. My huband said the instructions are easy to follow and the assembly is painless.I just love how nice they look and how much stuff I was able to pile on them. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Paid a lot more locally but I still think it's worth it!
I was installing hardwood flooring and rented the hardwood nailer. I was going to buy a cheaper model finish nailer, but the local tool store had four of these "special" promotion package deals for $279.99. I needed it right away, so I grabbed one and am very happy I did. Shot about 200 2" nails into 3/4" maple flooring with no problems. Have not tried the brad nailer yet, but based on the 41XP I will love it!

These are the first nailers I have ever owned or used, but I am amazed at how easy they operate. Another comment that may interest someone is that the hardwood floor nailer I rented was also made by Senco. Shot over 3,000 nails with no jams. I will definetely look for another Senco next time I install hardwood!!!

Granted, if you're into home repair, you've got a 25-foot steel tape in your toolbox. But how many times have you grumbled at it when it didn't stay rigid from across the room? Tapes have their purpose, but for estimated measurements of up to 50 feet, the Laser Tape is the way to go. Just point, press "read", and the distance is displayed in feet and inches or metric. It's simple to use and would be perfect for the homeowner trying to calculate how many gallons of paint to buy, how much vinyl flooring to get or even how much fertilizer to buy, provided you've got walls round your yard to bounce the laser off. It is, we must say, a little finicky, and it works best on monochromatic sold surfaces, but once you get the hang of it, it's a handy little tool.--Kris Jensen-Van Heste ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars handy as laser POINTER, absolutely useless as laser TAPE
...this is a good example of "you get what you pay for," I suppose.

This alleged "laser tape" actually uses a sound wave to take its measurement, the laser beam is there mainly for underhanded marketing purposes to mislead you into thinking that you're buying far more advanced technology than you're really getting.

Of course, sonar is notoriously unreliable for this sort of application, and therefore it is hardly surprising that it delivers kinda-sorta accurate rough measurements in all of maybe 3 out of 10 tries. All sorts of environmental factors can easily throw it off: the color, texture, and shape of the object you are pointing it at (flat 90 degree white walls seem to enjoy about 60% efficacy, the highest I ever got with it), exterior noise conditions, how much open space there is around you, etc.

Really the only thing this sonar tape really does well is serve as a bulky, clunky and noisy (it makes a clicking sound during operation, which I wish I could disable) laser pointer---the 9V battery does last a bit longer than the tiny little watch battery that most pen-size laser pointers use.

Thank God the home improvement warehouse I bought it at has a great return policy!

2-0 out of 5 stars Not accurate
I am giving it two stars because it may be useful for rough estimates. However, it is a disappointment.I got it on sale (close-out, I think) and for interior walls it consistently reads about 5 inches longer than the actual dimension (properly measuring from base.I am sure I will occasionally bring it out of the toolbox for a quick rough measure, but that is about it.I'd return it if I could.

3-0 out of 5 stars You get what you pay for
I received this as a gift and for my line of work, it works OK.
Don't expect exact accuracy, that's not what it is for. It is very good for me on estimates. Sure I get some obvious errors, but if you read the maunal, you will see that most are addressed there. Why would anyone use this to get measurements for cutting trim..??? That is what a tape is for. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Take the versatility of a fully functional dual bevel compound saw, add in a smooth operating slide, throw a 12 amp, single-phase 60 Hz motor "under the hood," and you’re got the Hitachi C10FSB 10-inch dual bevel sliding compound miter saw. This saw works effectively in both wood and aluminum sash applications. A built-in soft-start feature, electronic speed control, and a no load speed of 3,800 rpm combine to ensure clean, accurate miter, bevel, compound, slide, groove, and press cuts every time. The slide works almost effortlessly and can handle work pieces up to 3-11/32-by-12-9/32 inches or 3-9/16-by-11 inches, with press cutting capabilities for narrower work pieces up to 3-11/32 inches square. For bevel, miter, and compound cutting, the saw bevels 45 degrees right and left of center, with a miter range of 0 to 45 degrees left and 0 to 57 degrees right. Positive stops are provided at the most common miter angles, but the saw can be positioned securely at any point along the scale. For added versatility, the saw’s vice assembly mounts on either the right or left side of the base and can be raised or lowered according to the work piece height. Blades are easy to remove and install. A polyethylene V-belt protects the saw’s motor against overload.--Carl Thress ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great saw, mediocre packaging
I am restoring my old home, and also spend quite a bit of time helping like-minded family & friends do the same.I have just received my Hitachi C10FSB and overall am very pleased with the purchase.Except for zero degree bevel needing an easy to-do adjustment, all other angles were spot on as delivered. The saw has a great blade, and overall fit and finish is excellent.

I was not impressed with was Hitachi's packaging.Upon reciept I could see about 1" of the back of the slider protruding from a small hole in side of the box.Upon opening I found the saw had shifted from its cardboard cutout restraints, allowing the slider to poke out of the box.The bevel was not locked or restrained and was free to flip-flop during shipping.Luckily everything checks out okay.

I cannot comment on how competitors package their saws, but as noted in other reviews it is clear that Hitachi does not package their saws for individual home delivery. This is the only thing keeping the C10FSB from getting 5 stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Saw
I have had this saw for about six months and I absolutely love it.It is very smooth and it cut square right out of the box.I like the smaller size better than the 12" Dewalt Slider and the price cannot be beat.My only minor complaint is that a "D" style grip would be more comfortable.Overall an excellent saw for the price.

If only this had been in our toolbox a year ago when westruggled to install a suspended ceiling in the basement. This littleguy puts out an actual laser line vertically, horizontally, or at anyangle. 1-0 out of 5 stars Piece of junk
I bought this thing from a local home improvement store thinking it would be handy to use for hanging items on the wall and providing layout lines for flooring, etc.Wrong! The retractable pins that are supposed to hold it to a wall or ceiling or whatever, retract continuously and it won't stay in place. The laser line is practically invisible so it was of no use even if I had a project where I could just set it on the floor. It does seem to be fairly impact resistant proven by the number of times the pins retracted and it fell off the wall plus throwing it across the room out of frustration didn't seem to hurt it.However, it was a piece of junk before I threw it and it's still a piece of junk.I don't even know where it is anymore and I don't care.

Remember how cool we all thought that first Dremel was? We're reliving the feeling with this one: lighter, faster, smarter, better, and stronger. The main improvement over the last generation is the battery source: lithium-ion. There are so many reasons to applaud. Lithium holds its charge up to six times longer in storage than nickel-cadmium batteries, so it's ready when you are. Remember the disappointment when you were ready and your battery was low? That won't happen with this one. It's got a battery fuel gauge that tells you how much life is left before a recharge, so you won't be caught without your Dremel, and if you choose to keep it on its charger, you won't cause memory and shorten the charge capacity. It's small, it's light, it's comfortable and maneuverable; it's everything the corded models are, but without the cord. We love it.--Kris Jensen-Van Heste ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Cord or cordless?
I bought the Dremel 10.8v rotary cordless drill for the purpose of removing tile grout. At first it worked well. But, the battery only lasted 45 minutes. Then the problems started. The 1/16 inch grout bits only lasted a few minutes then broke. I had better luck when I was removing 1/8 inch grout because the 1/8 inch bit lasted for hours before it started getting dull. Since the grout bits are not well made, I found another brand that cuts much better, much cheaper in price, and last longer.

I HAD to get the grout removed and this was the only tool I found that would do that. But, after a few days the Dremel broke. I still had grout to take care of, so I bought a corded Dremel to continue the work while the cordless was sent in for repairs. To the credit of Dremel, the cordless was promptly repaired and returned along with a free accessory for my trouble. I started using the cordless again and it stopped working again. This time it just stayed on fast speed. So, off it went to the post office again to send in this thing for repair. It is repaired again, but this time I am using the corded Dremel.

I also tried the tool on other jobs such as removing paint from a window frame, sanding a small section of wood, drilling a pilot hole for a screw, and cutting off a screw that I could not remove. What I found was that the Dremel did a fair job if you have a steady hand. However, some of the accessories either break easily or grind down quickly. And these accessories are not cheap. You can easily spend 3 times the price in bits and accessories than what you pay for the tool itself.

The bottom line is, this thing is mostly good for small work such as crafts. But, can also come in handy when a large drill or sander just will not fit. Just stay away from the cordless.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best
This dremel is the best cordless rotary tool out there it has plenty of power with power to spare there just isn't enough room for me to say how good it is.Plus the customer support is just amazing they care about the customer and they are willing to help above and beyond.

5-0 out of 5 stars State of the Art in cordless Dremel tools
I have used Dremel tools for over 30 years and have recently found that cordless tools of any brand add another dimension to a tools user friendliness. I tried a number of other Dremel like tools that were cordless, but none could compare to this tool. If you need a rotary tool like this one, spend you money on this one. 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent product - Questionable 3rd party seller
I have one of these air filters in my bedroom and it has certainly cleaned the air well. (my filters are very dirty after a month).I like the product so much that I purchased 3 more to put in other areas of the house and at work.

However... I was not happy with the $33 shipping charge per unit (over 30% of purchase price) through Wholesaler's Club.I am hoping that my order processes smoothly.Of the 28 orders the Club has comments for in the past 40 days, only 61% have reported a good rating with no trouble. (will update when shipment arrives)

4-0 out of 5 stars Pros and Cons (just a couple) of a Great Air Purifier.
- Picks up where your AC filter slacks. Our AC filter is located right outside our bedroom, and the purifier still manages to trap a large amount of airborne material that air flow from the ac doesn't pick up. This is a significant quality considering that we also use the highest rated AC filters available.
- My wife's allergies have significantly decreased. We both wake up now with the ability to breathe through our noses. It's only when she ventures to the far side of the house that she starts sneezing.
- It must cut down a lot on animal dander. We have three cats that spend a good deal of time in our bedroom (it's the coolest and darkest room in the house), and were probably the main cause of her allergies. Not so much anymore!
- The main filter only needs to be changed once a year (so says Hamilton Beach), and are reasonably priced at around $40.
- The carbon pre-filter, which should be changed every three months, costs around $8.
- Altogether about $72 a year in filters - not too shabby.
- Even on the whisper setting this bad boy spits out a large volume of air, so the claim that it can cover around 350 sq. ft. is probably accurate.
- Traps mold spores, which is great if you have an issue with that.
- Lightweight, can be easily moved to and fro.
- We have never gotten the "high pitched" noise that another reviewer mentioned - his may be defective.

- Somewhat noisy (like a rush of air), though the whisper setting isn't so bad, and I actually like it while going to sleep. I would suggest using the higher settings an hour or so before you are going to spend time in a particular room - then switch to whisper.
- Not sure how affective the UV light is...seems kind of gimmicky. I have not been able to find any documentation on its affectiveness towards bacteria/viruses, and I'm surprised that Hamilton Beach doesn't provide any info.

Advise: Be sure to read the manual before you plug it in and power on! The carbon pre-filter will need to be removed from the plastic wrap and placed appropriately on the Hepa filter. Also, the UV light will need to be removed from its box and then plugged into its bracket. This is located inside the purifier - under the top vent. Do a visual inspection of the inside of the purifier to be sure no packing material has fallen into the path of the fan.

I certainly recommend this purifier, and would have give it a full five star rating if it weren't for the two cons above.

Update (08/01/04): Just replaced the carbon prefilter for the first time...I couldn't believe how much crud had accumulated on the surface of the filter. What was once black became completely beige with air debris/dander/pollen/dust/etc. This only solidified our satisfaction with this product.

Hang new kitchen cabinets, tile the bathroom wall, install a border in the baby's room, add shelving to your home office--the Black & Decker BullsEye laser line generator and stud finder is the tool for the job. In fact, the BullsEye is two tools in one. The built-in stud finder works at depths up to 3/4 inches and provides both an LED and alarm indicator to signal when you've reached the edge of a stud. Once you locate the studs in the wall you're working with, you can then hang the BullsEye at the appropriate height using either the included drywall pushpin (for drywall surfaces) or the keyhole insert with a standard screw or nail (for all other surfaces). Activate the self-leveling laser lines, and the built-in pendulum levels the unit automatically. Depending on the light conditions in your work area, the laser lights should be visible up to 10 feet in either direction. No more chalk lines or straight edges. Just a clean, accurate guide for where to place your fasteners. The included target cones are effective up to 50 feet in either direction of the unit, providing an overall work surface of up to 100 feet in length. The BullsEye works best indoors and is intended for the home enthusiast. Professionals will likely want something a bit more versatile (the BullsEye works only on a true horizontal axis, so it can't determine plumb or set a straight line at any other angle).--Carl Thress ... This tool is WONDERFUL.It's the best stud-finder we've ever used.It actually is accurate!I just used the laser level to hang borders in three rooms, and the job went a whole lot faster and smoother than I anticipated.Worth the investment!

3-0 out of 5 stars Handy, but not super accurate
This is a really good product idea, but unfortunately mine didn't live up to expectations. My laser level is about an inch out of level over 10 feet. That's probably within building specs, but I figured a product packing a laserbeam would be a lot more accurate.

I have some walls that are 20 feet long. I'd hoped to put this level on the wall and hang a bunch of pictures along a level line, but I can see the few inches of error when I look for it, and that'd drive me nuts.

I only use it for jobs that my spirit level can't span, but that are still under about 10 feet. Anything bigger and I get the chalk line out.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Tool
I love this tool. We built a new house and I used it for hanging curtain rods, verticla blinds, pictures and shelves. Our wall decorations look organized and very stylish. I like the fact that you can mark on the adjacent wall.

We have these shelves for my kids room that are beautiful but are a total nightmare to hang. It took me 3 tries at our previous house to hang them because there is no room for variance. I hung them in 1 try using this tool.

I have read other reviews where people complain about the holes left when hanging the device and it's nonsense. It really is a pin sized hole.

This is the best tool I have purchsed in 10 years because it saves me so much time when doing projects. ... Read more

Editorial Review

By evaporating warm water into a room, this portable humidifier soothes dry throats, prevents dry skin, alleviates congestion due to colds or allergies, and keeps plants and furniture moist. Select a humidity level by turning the infinitely variable control dial and choosing either fast or slow humidifying, and the device will automatically maintain a room up to 700 square feet at the desired humidity level. At low speed, the humidifier is whisper-quiet. This model evaporates about 3 gallons of water in 24 hours at high speed. The 1.8-gallon plastic water tank is transparent to permit water level monitoring and removes easily for filling with cool tap water. The humidifier measures 14-1/2 by 12-1/2 by 9 inches, can be moved easily from room to room, and is simple to clean and maintain. It carries a five-year warranty against defects. --Fred Brack ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Better than the last humidifer I bought.
I use this to humidify an enclosed, closet sized, habitat for my Giant Green Iguana.I keep humidity in the upper part of the habitat at 60-70%.This thing operates continuously (cycling on and off) for months a time, probably over a year at this point.I do have to soak the water tray and element in vinegar once a week or even more often to keep the scale down, but I've also let it go for a month w/out de-scaling and it works fine also.

The only problem I've had with this unit is the lower, outer tray cracked or seperated somehow and I got water from condensation leaking out.Since my habitat is waterproof this isn't an issue, and despite the unit being under warranty I just used RTV sealant to fix the leak. The environment I'm using this in is sort of extreme duty so I wouldn't hold this against the unit (much).

I prefer this unit to others that have LCD displays. The display s go bad on me sometimes due to humidity, as do the push buttons. The rotary switches on this unit are reliable, and after some fiddling you can get whatever level of humidity you want.

If the one I have dies and the warranty expired I would probably buy another.

2-0 out of 5 stars Worked well while it worked
The good
- Very quiet, at first (more on that later)

The bad
- Steam comes out at a low rate, even at the high setting
- Needs frequent cleaning due to scale, especially on difficult to clean heating element

The very ugly
- After 3 months of use has become very noisy, to the point that we are rarely using it.Quality control is not what it needs to be.

4-0 out of 5 stars does the job
This humidifier is great.I've had it about 6 months-I do have hard water, which makes it a pain to clean, but I don't do it very often and it works fine. The only thing is you can't clean the main part b/c it's hooked up to the electrical, and for me that has the most buildup. But it still works wonderfully and for the price I think it's a good buy.I use it almost every night, and on low fill it every 2 nights. ... Editorial Review

For many jobs, a small cordless drill is you need. But if you have more demanding projects in mind, DeWalt's 18-volt 3/8-inch cordless compact drill/driver can get the job done. The DeWalt drill/driver operates at 0-450 and 0-1,500 rpm and delivers up to 400 in./lbs. of muscle to bore through wood, metal or masonry. With an all-metal 5-5-5 planetary gear transmission, this workhorse is built to last. But brute force is by no means the DeWalt's only charm. Handy features like an 18-position adjustable clutch, 3/8-inch keyless ratcheting chuck, integrated lock-off button, and electric brake make this tool as versatile as it is strong. Add to that a comfortable grip, light weight (just 4.5 pounds) and ergonomic design, and you have a pretty good contender in the 18-volt class.--Carl Thress ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars good tool, but batteries are weak
this is a good, solid and reliable drill, can handle rough use and doesnt break.easy to adjust clutch and quick change chuck.only problem is the batteries dont run long even when fully charged, especially when cold. need longer life batteries, get the XRP batteries.

5-0 out of 5 stars AMAZING
My husband has used a black & decker drill for several years and has "served him well" but it always took forever to complete a job because it was so weak.Well now he flies through projects and even after it fell off a 15ft roof. The battery fell out-- he popped it back in and it has worked like a charm.

5-0 out of 5 stars Indestructable
I have had one of these for several years and it is my most reliable possession!I dropped it off a roof and onto the driveway and I thought... oh ..., there goes ... down the drain.I picked it up, slapped the battery pack back in and to my suprise, went right back to work! --Bulletproof ... Editorial Review

All batteries are not equal. DeWalt did some thinking and rebuilt these beauties, so the XR+ units offer extended run time with 2.4amp hour Cobalt NiCD cells. It’s a high-capacity battery that actually gives you up to 40 percent more run time, and in our book, time is money. We noticed the new battery latch design and think that’s an improvement, too, for faster, easier battery change-out on DeWalt’s entire line of 18-volt cordless tools. If you don’t have one, you’ll want to pick up the updated 9116 charger, too.--Kris Jensen-Van Heste ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great price and delivered before the estimate
I was looking for replacement batteries after the originals failed to perform.I looked around and found a another brand that has a direct replacement. Then I found this offer for two DeWalt replacement batteries at the super low price, I had to purchase these.

So far, the batteries have performed as I expected. In my case, the batteries were delivered before the estimated delivery date.

5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT VALUE

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Price on DeWalt Batteries
Presumably, each DW9096 in the pack works as well as the single item (see reviews on DW9096).This is a great price for a pair.I was looking for cheap batteries for my DeWalt equipment and found a 1.4 Amp hour battery for $54, but at only a buck or two more (per battery) for these, I will get the genuine, high-capacity thing! As soon, that is, as I scrape the money together. ...
