Too Noisy
I bought this air purifier for use in a bedroom because it was a HEPA type filter and I have read that the ionizing units can generate dangerous levels of ozone.The assembly was simple, just install the carbon pre-filter.When I turned it on high (they recommend that you start on high before switching to low or medium) the noise level was excessive!It was much louder than my 16" stand fan.I switched it to low thinking that would be much better.Not so, even on low the machine just makes too much noise for use in a bedroom.I do not even consider the noise level acceptable for a living room either.The unit had a sound like something rubbing on the inside, although I could not see anything actually rubbing.As far as cleaning performance goes, I did not use it long enough before sending it back to Tech Depot (Amazon affiliate). ... Hamilton Beach 04161 Is the Best
I have asthma and the Hamilton Beach 04162 has both my votes. I did a lot of research and intially bought the Blue Air (which I returned the next day). The reviews indicated it was the quitest air purifier. It isn't and it cost 2 and 1/2 times the price of the Hamilton Beach. Although it supposedly has the lowest decibel level (which I do not believe), the BlueAir has an extremely irritating high whine that oscillates irregularly, not to mention an annoying bright blue light. This might be good for torturing someone, but the BlueAir is NOT quiet. The only reason I didn't buy the Hamilton Beach to begin with was because a reviewer said he could not sleep to it. ... The Hamilton Beach on low setting has a white noise effect and I actually prefer to have it on when I sleep. It's sound is soporific. The light from the Infrared can be turned off, but it is not annoying like the light from the BlueAir, so I leave it on. The infrared has elimated the mold problem we were having in our bathroom. It is very attractive, well designed, well built, doesn't way a ton, monitors the air, does not incorporated ozone (thank God), and has enabled me to sleep much better. The air is noticibly cleaner and fresher now. The bottom line is I use to get up frequently at night wiith my asthma and now I don't!

Does the job, but not quite 5 stars
The good news is, it humidifies. That's what I bought it for and that's what it does. The level of humidity is adjustable, allowing the unit to automatically cycle on and off as needed. And yes, you can adjust the fan speed, but getting it anywhere near the upper range makes it sound like a B29 taking off. IT'S LOUD! I leave it on med-low and it's not bad at all.

It has two plastic 2.6 gallon water bottles and at the med-low fan speed I use, I go through about 1 bottle per day. It keeps the rooms close to it quite comfortable, but rooms farther away don't get much. Your mileage will vary depending on humidifier location, floor plan, and normal air circulation.

As far as being built "sturdy" (as one reviewer pointed out), I have to disagree. The entire housing is made of plastic. Without the water bottles in it, it's so light that on a hard floor it easily rolls away with the lightest bump. Unless you are on carpet, I recommend NOT installing the castors that come with it. The weakest part of the whole unit is the stupid lid. It's constantly falling off it's hinges when I'm replacing the water bottles. It's just poorly designed.

I highly recommend buying the optional "air cleaner filter" (model #1051) that fits on the back. It helps clear your house of dust and pollen and also makes your internal wick last longer. For allergy sufferers, this is an absolute MUST.

Speaking of making wicks last longer, it wasn't until I read the owner's manual that I found out soft water is NOT recommended as it's supposedly not good for the wick. Oh well. The only NON-softened water I have is my outdoor hose and there's NO WAY I'm going out there every morning in the snow to fill my humidifier bottles!

All in all, I give it a 5 in performance, 4 in construction, and a 2 in convenience. (Hey, refilling and lugging 22 lbs of water every morning gets old!) Since performance is really what we want out of it, it gets an overall score of 4 stars from me.

BTW, use about 1/2 as much of the anti-bacterial additive as the bottle recommends and it does just fine.

I bought this product due to the extreme dry heat in the nevada desert. What a relief. It can be as quite or as loud as you want it to be. It has a variable speed fan that can be tweaked up or down depending on the level of comfort. I have a small humidifier and it pales in comparison to this. Can't beat it, with the free shipping.

A healthy home addition
We have had our Bemis humidifier now for over three weeks. We live in Nevada where the air is hot and dry. This humidifier has moistened the air in our home so that we don't wake up with dry throats every morning. Sinus passages are also benefiting from having the moist air circulating in the house. It also has the advantage of looking like a nice piece of oak furniture which fits in beautifully with our decor. Probably one of the nicest features is that it runs fairly quiet. Don't order this one
I ordered this product around Jan/Feb 2005 from AMAZON. It has not been shipped yet. It is delayed to Jun17. I am not sure I can get it at that time. Amazon may delay for another one, two or more months.

Horrible quality control...they simply stop working.
Here's the letter that I sent to Bionaire...I've yet to receive any "satisfaction" (i.e., my money back or a unit that works).

"Where to begin....I originally purchased a Bionaire BAP1175 unit from Amazon.com.The unit worked but I could not get it to reliably go into the Sleep setting.After several weeks I decided to return the unit and get a replacement.You sent out the second unit, and that unit worked great...for two days, after which it completely died, and hasn't worked since, and this, after having waited for nearly a month for the replacement.I decided to be restrained when I called, and spoke with a very nice customer service rep., who agreed to send me out a replacement, 2nd day air.The replacement was a BAP1300.This unit worked fine, for one day as well, and now won't turn on.I believe that there must be a fundamental flaw in the design of these units.I am sending this letter as a last attempt at receiving some satisfaction.If I don't reach a satisfactory resolution I will feel compelled to search out every consumer review site on the Web, and post my negative opinion of Bionaire and your air filter products.It's a FAN for goodness sake!!I have to say I'm suprised I've had this much trouble.The unit itself seems quite sturdy, it just simply doesn't work."

I can't comment on the quality of this product since my order was never filled by Amazon. I ordered the item on Dec 8 when the claimed delivery was 5-7 days.When I came back just before Christmas to check status, expected delivery had changed to "Jan 13 - Jan 31". Then today (Jan 26), Amazon sent me an email asking me to confirm a new delivery of "Feb 28 - Mar 18". This was to be a Christmas present in 2004 not 2005! Amazon has a lot of nerve waiting until the last five days before notifying me of another delay of up to a month and a half!Is Amazon that far out in left field with respect to their suppliers?Does Amazon really think this is the way to grow a business?Doesn't Amazon realize that they are not the only distributor out there? Lifesaver!
I've been using two of these and the larger one in my bedroom, home office and livingroom for about a week now. The change in me and my son's allergy problems is just short of miraculous!The whisper quiet is just fine -- in fact, I think the sound helps lull me into deep sleep.My allergy problems haven't totally disappeared, but they are sooo much better and my son's have totally disappeared.The cat gets to stay! :-))

Didn't work out of the box
I just got this unit today, April 7th, 2005, and was pretty excited about it since i have ashthma.Anyway, it worked for a few hours. At that time, everything was nice and all.The unit isn't bad looking and worked impressively for a good price.However, then i opened the grill to test out the filter detector and the unit turns off as expected.However, the unit refused to turn back on after the grill was replaced...I referred to the manual and made sure everything was set up correctly and it was.Poor quality control.. stay away from this unit.

I love this thing!
For as long as I can remember, I've coughed myself to sleep; my allergies act up primarily when I'm lying down, and I haven't found any allergy medication I can really tolerate.I figured I'd give this a shot, although I had no experience with air purifiers before.

The morning after the first night I used it I realized that I had not coughed at all while going to sleep.I no longer cough when I lie down; also I have a fan that I run frequently that used to get caked with dust, and I noticed now that there's almost no dust at all on the blades.I have two cats, and this apartment also seems to collect dust, and I can say for sure that this product has been EXTREMELY helpful.

It is never completely silent; on the lowest setting there' s sort of a "white noise" effect.It took me a couple nights to get used to it; I don't notice it at all anymore.However, at the highest setting it is noisy; but I have it running on automatic and it almost never goes into the highest setting.One thing I thought was funny at first, is that the sensor is so accurate that I can be standing in the bathroom, using some hair spray, and the purifier (located in the living room) will immediately kick into high gear.If you want to be sure that you're not awakened in the middle of the night, I wouldn't suggest leaving it on automatic, since there is the off chance that it could kick into high and the noise might wake you up.

There is a very slight breeze that comes from the front grill; however, this is not a problem for me because I do not have itpositioned so it is facing me directly.

All in all, I am extremely satisfied with this product, and it is much better than I expected for the price I paid. ... Read more

This machine does the job.
Up here in the deep north it is essential to have humidifier if you have musical instruments, or anything made out of nice wood.I have tried several different options, and evaporative humidifiers are the best.This one has enough nice features to warrent an excellent rating.The main great feature is that it is easy to add water to the system.The tanks remove easily, and can be filled from the kitchen sink (they are too tall for filling in a bathroom sink).In the dead of winter expect to fill it daily, but fortunately this is big enough to only need filling once per day.Other nice features include a fan speed control (pump humidity in fast because you were gone all weekend and its dry), or quiet.At low speed settings you barely know its on.I also like the optional air cleaning evaporator.It apparently slows down air flow, but that seems trivial since the fan can simply be turned up. ... It must be doing something
If you have to replace the filter so often , can we ssume that is because the filter is dirty? Doesn't that mean it is removing some stuff from the air --which is what you want it to do???

Dream On If You Think THis Can Really Clean A Room
I bought this product for a fan sound when I sleep since I like that sound for sleeping. If you expect it to really clean anything, guess again. It is a small noise maker only and does not do what it is supposed to do, but in all fairness, virtually no aircleaners at any price really clean the air of dust, etc. I got in on an Amazon.com special about a year ago and since the price was so low, it has been an excellent investment for my purposes.

Bought this on clearance and it was only worth the clearance price, in my opinion. Within 2 months, I had spent more on filters than I had on the actual purifier. Great Job
I bought it yeterday. We do lots of Indian cooking with lots of smoke. This guy has significantly reduced the smoke and odor.

Excellent for the kitchen
This product is excellent in the kitchen. We cook a lot of indian food and this product is a 'match made in heaven' for this type of odor-intensive cooking. nowadays, we even fry fish and this takes care of all the odor. Havent had to replace filter until now. It would have been great if Hamilton bundled a free filter along with the machine.

I bought one to counter the stench of the litter box used by 2 cats.The purifier was a miracle worker for the first week operating on "whisper mode", so I bought a second one for my office, since my dog comes to work every day and adds his smell to the place.After the first week, the one by the cat litter box stopped being effective.I opened it and it was pretty choked with dust, so i cleaned it out as best as I could and put it back.It doesn't seem to work like it did the first few days any more.I could try replacing the filter, but the cost would add up quick if I have to replace them once a week!Yikes!I'd have to say it worked so great to start with that I'll stick it out a while longer, but overall it hasn't lived up to its full billing.In terms of "whisper mode", the sound level of the fan is less than an window A/C, but more than a computer fan... ... Where is My Product
I ordered this back in the winter of 2004, and kept getting message from Amazon indicating that there is a delay in shipping the product. After 2 delays, I just canceled the order. That is the first time I had a bad experience with Amazon, and I planned to cancel my Amazon-branded Visa card as a protest.

don't expect to recieve this item
Who ever is selling this can't even seem to come up with the product. I suggest finding someplace else to purchase it. I ordered this in Feburary now its April and they still can't seem to find one to ship. They claim ships in one to two weeks, yeh right. Allergies and other nastys in the air don't wait for these shmos.

Excellent air cleaning unit
After researching HEPA filters for several weeks, I decided to purchase this one and am very happy I did.In most homes, when youlook across the room when sunlight is spanning across it, you can see various little specks of things floating through the air -- specks that enter your eyes and you breathe.After getting this unit, I no longer have the "dirty air" problem.

The unit itself is VERY quiet on the lowest 2 settings (easy to sleep to), the 3rd setting sounds like a fan is blowing high speed -- able to sleep to if you don't mind some white noise.The highest setting is a bit loud, but there is really no reason to have it on that setting, unless you quickly want to purify a room.

If you're debating whether to buy a HEPA purifier -- after you replace your first set of filters and see the filters liberally coated in grime that you would otherwise breathe in, you'll thank yourself.If you're debating whether to buy THIS HEPA purifier -- I have had this one since May 2004 and have just recently replaced the filters.The unit itself still looks and sounds new.I've bought products from Holmes before...and all of their products are still fully functional after several years.

These filters fit both our models 4251/4271 and HB's TrueAir webpage indicates these filters fit all 3 of their Odor Eliminator models. Our house has a smoker, 4 small dogs and we burn candles. We need to replace filters every 6+ months. The units still work fine after 3 years but, they are small and only plug into out of the way receptacles.

Harmony Air Purifier
I bought one of these units for my daughters allergies and asthma and because we had a spot of mold in our home that was cleaned and removed and I must say this thing worked great! We have a relatively small first floor where my daughter sleeps and I must say that she slept the entire night without waking up and coughing for the first time in a year! I would definitely reccomend this unit to others and I am thinking of purchasing a second one for my basement.

I have only had for a few days so I can only rate a 4. So far so good. I wanted for an area used by a smoker. I can be on one end of the room and cant smell as long as the smoker turns the unit on high before they start smoking. I probably could have went with the higher unit for the size of the area to get more air changes for the size of the area, though. The filters look to be very easy to change. Not very loud either. I cant hear when the t.v. is on.

holmes hap625 air purifier really works
I bought the Holmes HAP625 a month ago from Amazon and love it. It's easy to move around from room to room.At night I left it on "low" between 2 bedrooms.In the morning, my severe allergies -stuffed nose and itchy eyes disappeared.The air flows upward, so it doesn't hit your face if you are sleeping.It fits nicely with my house decor. I bought 6 of these for my 3000 square foot home over a year ago and they work wonderfully.We put one in every bedroom and 2 in the family and living room and our allergies have reduced dramatically.The great thing is there are never any filter replacements to buy - ever!Just wipe the collector clean with a damp rag and reinsert and turn back on.Collector is held in place with 2 thumb screws and easy to remove and reinstall.Only reason I gave it 4 vice 5 stars is you need to clean the collectors approximately every 3 weeks or else their effectiveness degrades quite a bit.If you could go a month or more without cleaning I would have given it 5 stars. ...
