5-0 out of 5 stars A smoke detector that's easy to use
Up until now I've only lived in houses with the usual smattering of random low-end smoke detectors. This smoke detector puts all of them to shame.

Installation is incredibly easy. The smoke detector separates from the base with a light twist (not the usual yanking or bending that always has me convinced I'm about to break the thing). The mounting base is really light, which is nice when your standing on a chair and pressing it to the ceiling above your head. There are two long channels for placing the two screws that hold it up, which gives you a decent amount of error margin. If you're replacing an existing smoke detector, sometimes you can even use both original holes.

First Alert also put some thought into battery replacement. The battery compartment is a dedicated slot that swings out from the side. It's easy to open and close and keyed so it won't close properly if you put the battery in backwards.Although the battery is a standard 9V, the smoke detector uses pressure clips (like you'd find with AAs) rather than the standard snap-in design which requires more forcing.

The remote silencer/test feature is great.Basically you hold down the volume or channel controls from your TV remote to silence or test the detector. This makes this smoke detector ideal for kitchens and rooms with high ceilings since you can silence it without having to get out a stool.

One drawback of the remote feature is that if you have a bedroom or kitchen with a TV in it, you probably shouldn't buy this smoke detector for that room. Before we installed them, I had the detectors on a side table in the living room and managed to accidentally set off their test modes while using the remote to operate the TV.

If you're buying the smoke detector for use in a house you plan to rent out, you might be concerned that all these convenience features will make it too easy for your tenants to disable the detectors.First Alert solved this problem by providing two locking pins: one for the battery compartment and one for the twist-off base. These pins are installed and removed with a pair of pliers.Of course installing the locking pins makes the smoke detector harder to use.

As one of the other reviewers commented, this smoke detector doesn't look like the picture on this page.Go to First Alert's web site if you want to see an accurate picture.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best dual sensor smoke alarm
This is supposed to be one of the best rated dual sensor smoke detectors on the market. I have 5 of them.

The image shown here is either an old version or just the wrong version. In actuality, these detectors are much better looking. they are actually very round or domed. They also are rather tall, hanging lower from the ceiling than some. I don't mind since they don't look bad and they're rated well. You should check First Alerts website if you want to see what these really look like and haven't seen them.

The other detector that is rated similar to this is a Kidde Nighthawk brand. But it's reported to have more false alarms so I went with this one. I like the looks of this First Alert better, but that's just my opinion.

The photoelectric sensor uses a beam of light that sets off the alarm when broken by smoke. hence the term "smoldering". The ionization sensor is for the detection of flaming fires.

I think you'd have less time to react if the flames are already shooting that's why I like the idea of having a photoelectric cell. If a small fire starts, some smoke would be given off and set off the alarm before it got really big giving you hopefully more of a warning and more time. At least that's what I believe.

If this is in the kitchen as is mine and if you cook without a range hood drawing the smoke this detector would go off. If you toast on the dark side without a range hood pulling some smoke the detector would go off. I don't think of those as false alarms I think it's a testement to the sensitivity of the photoelectric detector which I like.

The alarm is quite loud. In the event I toast or cook and inadvertently don't have my range hood on and the alarm goes off I just twist the detector out of its base and put it on the counter until I'm done venting the smoke. And that smoke by the way, is barely perceptible with the eye, which is a testament to the sensitivity of this smoke detector.

Installation is a piece of cake. Battery replacemnent is equally simple. Actually more simple. There's a little door you open and pop the battery into while the detector is installed. You don't have to pull it down. although, it's just a simple twist to remove.

Also, you can test the detector with any TV remote. You can shut it off with a remote as well but I just use the external button for both.

I'm very pleased with these, as I stated I have 5. I bought them all through Amazon at different times and had no trouble with shipping. They came fast, were packed well and I feel a bit more comfortable having them up.

5-0 out of 5 stars late shipping
I placed this order Dec 30, 2002. Your ad says "usually shipped within 1 to 2 weeks. And you just keep putting my order back and putting it back. With no explaination as to why. I am sorely dissapointed in the handling of this order. The other time we ordered the very same item we received it in a timely manner. I don't know if I will use you again. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good unit but answering machine a problem
This is a great unit for the price.I've used one for several years and it has worked twice to alert me to situations where my furnace was out.Very simple to use.The only issue is that you can't use an answering machine with it because to stop it from calling you requires you to call the unit and let the phone ring 16 times.Answering machines won't let you do this. So, now I'm going to buy the deluxe model which allows you to use an answering machine and has more bells and whistles. ... Existing good battery, new battery, nothing stops the chirping. My Jack Russell terrier is fed up! I'll be purchasing a different brand to replace my Lifesaver model 1275 smoke alarm.

1-0 out of 5 stars False Alarms are not the problem.
Yeah we had a few times when the alarms did go off at 2 or 3 in the morn with no idea why.But tonight takes the cake, we just got back from a small vacation and about 20 min ago we heard a poping noise in our bed room while watching tv.Next we smell an electrical fire/smoke smell and we see smoke spewing from the smoke alarm unit.Next thing we know all the units are humming away.I was quick to remove the unit and disconnect it from the main line and carried it out to my garage with it still humming away. The unit really stunk and was really hot.I dont know what the heck is going on here but I did find the owners manual and install manual on line.It does state that the Manufacture warranty's this unit for up to six years. Our house was built four years ago.Just wanted you all to know this bit of info.

1-0 out of 5 stars Great product if you like false alarms at 3am.
Same problem as everyone else.Installed them as a replacements for old alarms. After a couple of months starting getting false alarms on two different alarms.Called the 800 number and was told that the alarms had dust or bugs in them and to clean them.I told her I never had problems like this with the old ones and I had read a bunch of negative reviews on the internet. Her responce was that they were not responisible for dirt or bugs.Good old "Not our fault" customer service.

NOT RECOMMENDED. (Unless you like false alarms) ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars First Alert Problems
Small wonder you hear of homes burning down and there was no battery in the smoke detector...! Maybe I just got a lemon detector but the one I just purchased has been nothing but trouble Model sa88b, sa89b. My wife gets a shower and after she is finished the smoke alarm goes off.. push the button to silence.. still keeps on going.. I called and was told that it is sensitive to steam... I said we are not talking a steam bath.. you could not even see the steam in the hallway.. next night after my shower with the door closed.. finish and open the door.. not much steam at that point.. go to bed and 10 minutes later the alarm goes off and will not stop! Of course I have to take the battery out to get to sleep. The last First alert I purchased before this one gave me similar problems and it ended up getting ripped off the wall from frustration.... I will try a kidde type next and hope they make a better product.. I am officially done with first alert..... Dave E ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Dysfunctional
I bought one of these units at a local home center and installed it, only to find that it didn't work at all.I returned the defective unit for a replacement, which also failed to work. When two supposedly merchandisable items fresh out of the bubble pack fail to work, it says little for quality control and for long-term dependability.I'm looking for a higher-grade unit from a more reliable manufacturer--the cost difference is negligible considering the importance of security from fire and smoke inhalation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good, basic protection for your home.
No wiring, nothing complex, no brain needed to install and maintain this simple, basic smoke & fire detector.Runs on a 9v battery that lasts a year or more. The shrill alarm will definately wake you and get your attention. For the price of this alarm, you could install several around the house or apartment. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Inconvenient when emitting nuisance alarms
Although extremely sensitive, it is prone to emit nuisance alarms caused by broiling meat, sawing or painting in a room. For the first, just make sure your kitchen is adequately vented. For the second, make sure your detector has a "shower cap" on in while you work. If your detector gets dust in it caused by sawing or spray painting, you will most likely have to replace the detector (according to my electrical contractor).

In new construction, detectors are usually connected to one circuit--they are interconnected. When one goes off, they all do. This model does not have a hush button. To shut it (them) off, you either have to fan a magazine under the suspect detector or trip the circuit breaker. This being the case, if you are having new construction, I suggest you connect your several detectors to a dedicated circuit.

My recommendation is to buy units with a hush button, connect them to a dedicated circuit breaker, or do both. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great kit - other guy is an idiot
Here's a clue for the other reviewer: if you need to do 2 tests then you need to buy 2 kits.

Here's another clue: if you need a timely response then check before you buy.If your realtor can't help you - get a new realtor!

This kit is easy to use, simple instructions, and accurate results. The main point that I appreciate is that they don't try to nail you with extra lab costs after purchase like some other kits I've seen.

1-0 out of 5 stars better packagingmay save my time in the future
The reason I purchased the First Alert RD1 Radon Detector was because I was trying to sell my house and needed to show that I had done testing. When Ireceived the kit-I found that in order to do a real estate transaction you must do 2 tests. I wasn't aware of this until I opened the packaging.WHich upset me that I had to go back and purchase another one. Also I didntrealize that it was going to take me 21 daysto get my test results in. Ifelt as though that was an over extended time, considering real estatedeals can be done within a week. ... Read more
