1-0 out of 5 stars defective product and poor customer service
The first drill press that I received from Grizzly was defective: the adjustment lever for the belts was stuck and the drill made terrible noises when turned on. Grizzly was very slow in responding to my many inquiries (with no 1-800 number for customer service)and, after repackaging and returning the defective drill press and more than a month from my initial order, I received another drill press. Upon opening the box, however, I found a dent on the housing surrounding the belts. What a mess! If I knew then what I know now, I would never have ordered this drill press. Think twice before ordering this item.
Buy something local.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Price Performance
I finally bit the bullet and bought this drill press on 12/31/04 just right before grizzly increased the price on it.Well, I finally got it all assembled (not difficult at all, only one person can do it) and it works great.Like one other reviewer mentioned, it is a little rough around the edges but it does run very smooth.Overall, I'm very happy with this purchased. All that is needed is to make an aux table. Oh, and I wish griz would include the light bulb so I wont have to run out for one, but no big deal.last thing, i didn't get a drill press vice that others were mentioning about.i guess this is not included anymore??? oh well...

5-0 out of 5 stars Power to spare
A very smooth and powerful drill press that found many other uses in my shop.It takes everything I throw at it and keeps on humming along.I am not crazy about the use of belts for speed changes but it is a necessary evil and a small price to pay.The machine is heavy but can be moved and setup by one person. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars huge machine
This drill press is enormous. The head on it probably weighs 175# or more. Not an assembly job for the weak or faint of heart.

Table casting is pretty rough in the coolant channels/t-slots, but the table is smooth. The motor runs at 1725 rpm, and the whole machine is very quiet.

The drill press is huge. Can't even compare it to a 17" model. The table is very large. The machine definitely is not top have, with a decent size very heavy cast iron base, it stays where you put it.

Have I mentioned that this is the biggest machine in my shop?

3-0 out of 5 stars A lot of machine, but a lot of hassle
After much research and deliberation between the Jet, Delta, and Grizzly, I opted for the extra muscle of the Grizz.I received my drill 7 hours after the window for delivery that was given to me, and frankly, it looked like a bomb had gone off inside the box.The top of the box was not even attached. As the delivery guy was removing it from the truck, the head assembly and column were literally falling out of the package.I declined acceptance of the package.I called Grizzly the next day, and they seemed genuinely concerned, but it took another 10 days for me to receive my drill (when 3-5 days was promised).Once I finally got my drill press in good condition - the second time - I was impressed. It is an absolute behemoth. It is so much more machine than the Delta and Jet.There is A LOT of metal in this machine. It took me and another guy everything we had to get the head on the column.Once assembled, I was impressed with how quiet and stable this 1.5 hp beast ran. While assembly was rather straight forward, I was very unimpressed with the manual. It was dated, and did not reflect many of the updates to the drill press. It had very little on the operation and different speeds of the machine.I called Grizzly and pointed this out, and all they could tell me was that the manual had not been updated. All in all, this is one beefy machine, and I am very impressed with the operation.I really wish that Grizzly would pay more attention to some of the details though, like shipping, customer care, and the manual.I like this tool a lot, but I will think twice now before dealing with Grizzly again.

1-0 out of 5 stars 20" drill press
This 20" drill press will last for years. It is the lowest priced 20" drill press on the market. Not the cheapest. G's service is great.I have needed parts for the G machines I own and they have sent them free with no charge. I have a small proto type shop and I use this drill press for metal drilling. It works great.Of the 74 machines I own 7 are Grizazly and I would buy them again. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A solid machine at a good price
When shopping for my first woodworking drill press for my shop, I wanted something that was solid, powerful, reliable, and something that I wouldn't outgrow.I've grown tired of buying cheap and low-end machines and later wishing I had sprung for something better.I've also been disappointed in Delta's quality lately (my second choice), so I decided to try another brand.Having used this drill press on a project of mine for about a week now, I'm convinced this is the machine.

I received my drill press about a week after I ordered it.The box is too heavy to be handled by one person alone, but most people should be able to move it piece by piece once they've received it.Assembly is easy, but you will definitely need help mounting the head onto the column as the head is very heavy. This machine is quite a beast for a benchtop drill press -- be sure your workbench can handle the size and weight of this machine.

At 3/4 hp, this drill has more than enough power to drill through wood.In fact, it's sometimes hard to tell if your bit has punched through the bottom of the wood since the motor never seems to strain when drilling. You'd think a motor like that would create a lot of noise, but it's much lower than I had expected.

The only irritation I've had so far is Grizzly's addition of a depth stop gauge on the left side of the head. Now don't get me wrong, this is a fine addition, but they've removed the scale on the collar lock on the right side without removing any of the hardware. So essentially, you have two methods for a depth stop. The depth stop gauge on the left is easy to bend if you're not paying attention, so I'll be using the collar stop on the right after adding my own scale.(This change has not been incorporated into the manual yet.)

One interesting thing I discovered is that this model and the G7944 (the floor model) are identical, including the manual and dataplate on the head, except for three column parts. So for about $65, you can order the three column parts from Grizzly and convert this machine to the G7944 floor model (and vise versa) if you decide that better fits your needs in the future.

Overall, I've found this drill press to be an excellent machine and wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to anyone.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good Machine, Poor Customer Service
This is my first tool purchase from Grizzly, and I am very disappointed with their customer service! In all the pictures and literature, including the manual that came with the dp, it shows a depth guage ring on the feed shaft. However, when I looked at the head unit, there wasn't a depth ring.Instead there was the ruler-type guage attached to the spindle. The problem with this is in order to attach the Mortising Accessory, you have to remove the depth guage...then you don't have a guage for mortising.I called customer service and at first they said sorry, too bad and there was nothing they could do.After complaining for a few minutes the tech consulted with a Supervisor and their solution was to send me the parts to change it to the advertised type...but I HAD TO PAY FOR THE PARTS!Now, it wasn't the price, just the principle. The parts cost a whole $4.00.I explained that after this experience, they would be losing me as a customer and they did't care.I would rather pay more money to purchase from another company with better customer service. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Flexible but WEAK!
I read the previous reviews that mentioned the severely underpowered "1/2" horsepower motor, but when I saw the press, I just had to get it.The head swivels and telescopes - very cool! It's great for doing unusual drilling jobs.

However, I would agree with the other reviews regarding the severely under-powered motor.By simply holding the chuck, I can keep the spindle from turning when geared to the LOW speed! I can keep the spindle from turning with my thumb and forefinger when it's geared to the fastest speed. There is NO WAY this is actually 1/2 horsepower. My cordless pistol drill is probably at least twice as strong.Next item on my list... a new motor!

Don't be scared away from Grizzly products, though.I have purchased other Grizzly products, and this underpowered motor is not typical of their usual high quality (and fantastic prices).I would probably buy this drill again, underpowered motor and all, for $200.It's still worth it.

1-0 out of 5 stars You get what you pay for
I purchased this machine because I needed to drill stepped holes in the middle of disks with forstner bits.I needed a floor model. And this is the only one available from anyone that I know of.I would have been happy to spend much more money and I didn't expect much for the price. My expectations were met.

The motor is severely underpowered.I need to drill 1.125 holes in the middle of up to 25" sheet stock.I have to be very careful and just take small "baby steps" lowering the forstner bit in and then removing it to keep the motor spinning.I'm thinking of replacing the motor as soon as I can get around to it.

The table is not square to the bit.I made a larger table and attached it to the stock table.I do this on all my drill presses anyway to prevent tearout on the back side of the piece.I had to shim significantly ( 1/4 of an inch) on one side to get it square to the bit.

There is a stop which operates on both the up and down stroke which is a good idea. It's basically a bolt with nuts above and below a piece of cheap angle. The first time you use your stop, the angle will bend. You'll need to replace it with something more substantial.

The handles on the clamps have a plastic cover which wants to come off every time you attempt to tighten or loosen any of the various settings. This really bothers me.

The press will allow you to drill holes 18" from the support stand. This is very good. You can also rotate the head for angled holes. This is also very good for those awkward angled holes on furniture.

The bottom line is this.... it's a machine that I love to hate.Don't plan on using it for the only press in your shop. But if you need to drill holes in wide stock or angles for chairs and such, buy it, fix it, and enjoy.

2-0 out of 5 stars what do you expect for $179
Let me preface my comments by stating that I own and love many pieces of grizzly machinery. That being said, this is not one of them.

The design of this drill press intrigued me to the point that I decided to purchase it.It has occupied a place in my shop for over a year now.It is a great idea, 34" swing, drill at compound angles on a flat table, how can you beat features like that, right? They fall short of the theory in the application.

First and foremost the motor is way underpowered. It is not the 1/2 hp motor that they use on most of their heavier machines, it is a very poorly made import of about half the physical size you would expect.drilling holes with any sized forstner bit over about 1/2" will stop the motor, you must feed very slowly and back it off every 1/16" to let the motor regain momentum.

I should have replaced the motor immediately, but figured I would use it until it burned up, which happened last weekend at the most inopportune time.Thick clouds of black smoke, whining, hissing, the smell of burning plastic, of course it happened 13 months after I purchased it, 1 month after the 12 month warranty expired, not that i would want another of those motors anyway.

I replaced it with a 1/2 hp Dayton motor of corresponding specifications (would have used larger, but It was what I had immediately available).Talk about a night and day difference, it powered through drilling 2" holes with no problem whatsoever.I had used this underpowered drill press long enough that I forgot what a drill press was supposed to work like.

The other main problem is the amount of flex in the main column and in the shaft for the radial head, it is acceptable for most tasks but can cause a little more deflection than desired for precision work.I still like the radial head idea.I wish the larger radial head drill press grizzly offers was mounted on a conventional main column with a conventional table.

If you do buy this press, replace the motor immediately, it's not worth the aggravation or inefficiency to even bother with the original. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Poorly executed details
Seems like a reasonable piece of equipment, but it was frustrating to setup and a few of the details seem to be poorly thought out.

* The manual omits important details and seems to refer to a earlier revision of the product.
* The oscillating feature seems cool, but they recommend that you remove the handles for safety reasons. This is big enough inconvenience, that I may not use that feature much.
* One of the nuts on the idler pulley was loose. It wouldn't drill through anything substantial until that was tightened.
* While the output shaft is quite true, the outside of the chuck appears to be slightly wobbly in operation. While it doesn't appear to affect the operation, it doesn't inspire confidence, either.
* The base looks particularly crude in its machining. It isn't a big issue, it just makes the drill press look cheap.

Some good safety features are the spring chuck key and the switch on the belt door.

I don't know why Amazon refers to this as a H0626.The box and manual called it a model W1668.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Great Litttle Drill Press
The press was well packaged and undamaged. The instruction and assembly manual did not completely match the drill press I received. I guess, if you can't figure out how to put it together, you shouldn't be using it anyway. I have a small shop. Everything is on casters. For my shop, it's perfect. Easy to operate, change drill speeds and engage the oscillating feature. It comes with a set of sanding drums. The mounting hardware doesn't hold on to the sanding drum very well, but it works. I added a 3/4" plywood deck to the adjustable platform for sanding and drilling larger stock. This helps in keeping your stock square to the drill or sanding drum. The oscillating feature works well, but you need to be careful how much pressure you place on the object you are sanding to keep from damaging the mechanism. Once you figure out the proper pressure on the sanding drum, the results are quite good. The extra money you pay for all the features is worth it. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars This Grizzly is real "growler"
I haven't had a chance to really use this machine yet. After assembling and turning the machine on, I am disappointed.Due to the excessive vibration, I am considering a heavy steel work table to mount this "hoppin hunk of grizzly" too, since it won't stay in one place very long. The belt is obviously too short. The tension adjustment is not centered between the two pivot points, which causes the motor to twist when tension is applied. Bottom line is, this machine needs some re-design. If I could rate it below one star, I would. I was wrongly under the impression that Grizzly tools were industrial grade. I don't believe I'll be buying anything else with the Grizzly name on it. First impressions are lasting.

3-0 out of 5 stars Growling Grizzly
Cons. This drill press is a real noisy growler(even without a load). The motor runs hot- so don't make a belt adjustment or speed change until it cools down. The table center hole is not in alignment with the chuck (the table is too far forward by an eighth of an inch. A half inch bit should pass through this hole when the table is centered).
Pros. Nice chuck. Good return spring. Low price.

4-0 out of 5 stars nice, solid, small drill press
Pretty much all your average weekend woodworker needs. Made in China, but fit and finish is perfectly acceptable.Castings are nice and heavy, and the 1/2 hp motor is a nice feature - a little more power than you usually get on a drill press this size. The whole thing went together nice and square right out of the box.

A few cons - the depth stop is flimsy, partly made of plastic, and not easy to adjust. Obviously at this price point you can't have everything, but making this more solid would have cost Grizzly a few cents. Also, the table simply clamps on to the column - probably I'll eventually rig something up to make alignment and height adjustment easier, but there's no obvious way to do this.

Another odd thing - the third time I used it, the chuck key, of all things, snapped in half. Grizzly customer service was very professional and replaced it free, no questions asked. But that meant a few days of downtime - I couldn't find the right size key locally so I had to wait until the replacement showed up from Grizzly. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Jet milling machines
Jet machines are quite functional.

A milling machine is the heart of a machine shop.

If this is your first milling machine, expect to
spend and equal amount on the tooling you will need
to make it work. A clamping kit, an assortment of end mills
chucks and holders, a vice, a rotary table, an indexing head
and more will all be required to round out the purchase.

Horesepower translates into speed of material removal.
Bigger bits require greater power.

This is just a starter mill and you will want to upgrade
to something costing ten or twenty times as much when you
want to do production work as this one is all hand cranked
and requires a skilled operator to run it.

Did I mention that it cuts wood etc.? There are even machinable
ceramics which it can handle.

Again, expect to double the price (as a ballpark est.) on any
machine tool by the time it you are done. And plan to put it on
a solid foundation, not in your livingroom.

I use mine (a Jet VMM626) to make thermoplastic injection molds. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Definitely not what I expected
This machine was far below my expectations. When I received the machine and got it set up, there was a noticeable grinding (metal on metal) noise in the headstock area. I called support at Grizzly and they shipped out a couple of quill bearings for me to replace. Upon receiving them, they were not the same as the ones in the quill. Apparently the machine was updated, but not the manual. Even the support guy did not have an updated manual. Also, the interior of the quill area was full of leftover sand from the casting process.Since I could not replace the bearings, Grizzly agreed to swap the headstock. I took it back to Grizzly and they decided not to swap the headstock, but to replace the quill only. Upon getting it set up again, it was as noisy as before. This time I took the whole machine back to Grizzly. While they agreed it was noisy, they felt it was quieter than most of their units. They decided to add another rubber shim to the quill to cut down on some of the noise. They also replaced the motor which was bad, and the chuck which was found to be defective. Upon getting it home and running it again, it was worse than ever. There was no way I could live with the noise of this machine so I returned it.

The service people at Grizzly were kind and courteous, but they could not overcome a very bad machine. The runout on this machine appeared to be significant from the naked eye, but I never measured it due to my frustration level with the noise problem.I have other Grizzly products that I am satisfied with, but there appears to be a definite problem with this drill press, especially since they stated that my unit was quieter than most. ...
