These are not your Grandmother's Marples!
Marples was an English brand that was purchased by Irwin.I have an older set of Marples chisels and they are quite nice. Based on the comments of other posters the quality may have dropped.It would be nice to know exactly where they were made as it is likely they have been cheapened.

Have served me well
I bought a set of these chisels about 10 years ago.With a proper shapening, they have served me as well as I could expect.The hold an edge, they don't chip, and they do what they are supposed to

Buy the 4 piece set!
These chisels are great for what they are and offer an excellent value (price vs. quality). I have not noticed a significant concavity / convexity on the backs of the 2 chisels I've had for the past several years (1" & 3/4"). They do seem to need sharpening with a great deal of regularity but it's easy to get a nice edge in no time (probably as one reviewer suggested, due to the comparitive softness). Very nice heft and comfortable to work with for extended periods of time. Don't hit these hard with a metal hammer and then expect them to be comfortable when doing hand cleanout because I've found the plastic does deform somewhat. Chisel Grip = Knuckle salvation
For ten bucks I eliminated bandaids, stitches, weeks of not being able to do my job 'cause my hammer would have glanced off my chisel and applied th blow to my hand that I planned to deliver to the item being worked on. Good but need work
After reading the other reviews posted here, and seeing some conflicting views, I decided to give the Freud set a look.They arrived in a nice box and seem to be as advertised, fairly decent tools in a mid price range.I felt that the finish appeared a little cheap, lipstick on the pig, if you know what I mean.They seem overdressed.There are too many tool marks to start using them right away, but with some work to finish them up I was able to remove softwood from a test piece that would rival a plane.This is a good value for reasonabley good tools that will require some final dressing before they become really great tools.

Not such a great finish
I'm disapponited in my set of Freud Chisel set.They arrived with the blades nicked.Several had large nicks which would take a bit to remove.I'm sending back.They look like they would be a fine set other than the obvious defects. ... Read more
