    Editorial Review

Senco has long been a leading maker of air-powered fastening systems but has rarely offered tools outside this line, so when we heard they were coming out with a professional-grade cordless screw gun, we were eager to take a look. The first thing we noticed about the DuraSpin is that there really isn't anything quite like it. Designed for drywalling, floor sheathing, and underlayment applications, the DuraSpin is a lightweight, 2,300 rpm, 14.4-volt cordless tool that drives collated, Phillips-head, or square-drive screws, 1 inch to 2 inches long, rapidly and repeatedly.

To operate this gun, you hold the trigger down and get the drive up to speed (takes just a second), then drive screws by depressing the nosepiece against your material. The screws automatically advance along a track up the front of the gun. The trick is to not let up on the trigger after driving each screw, but to back off and press the nosepiece on the next spot while the drive continues spinning.

The gun features a reliable depth-of-drive adjustment that allows drywallers to get a correct depression every time without tearing the paper. We drove an entire clip in rapid succession and, using consistent pressure, achieved a uniform countersink every time. The depth-of-drive and screw-size adjustments are both toolless, as is the bit changing, which is done with a no-chuck, pop-in-type system. Changing screw strips takes only a few seconds, and the strips themselves are a nice size for conveniently carrying in a tool belt. All in all, the DuraSpin impressed us with how easy it is to use. It's lighter and more portable than competing collated screw guns, and strikes us as a must-have in a drywaller's tool kit. It isn't designed for use with an extension kit, however, so if you're going to lay floor sheathing, you'll need your kneepads.

Senco claims the 14.4-volt battery will drive 650 1-1/4-inch screws, 450 1-5/8-inch screws, or 300 2-inch screws into wood in a single charge, and while we weren't counting screws, that sounds about right. Of course, these numbers will vary depending on the material being fastened. Each tool comes with two batteries, a charger, two spare bits, and a rugged carrying case. The batteries recharge in about an hour. --Brian Trinen ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars needs some practice
great gun, but required getting used to. In that I agree with the other reviews. But ... can you imagine, a craftsman actually having to learn how to use a tool!?

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Time Saver
I am not a professional, but I found the Duraspin screw gun to be an incredible time saver. It made drywall hanging much easier and a lot faster.I hung drywall in a garage, bedroom, bath, and laundry room with the Duraspin, and it had plenty of power. The battery held up well. The second battery was always charged and ready to go, when the first battery started to lose power. The screws almost always were sunk to the correct depth (95%+).The only time I had troubles is putting a screw into the corner of a wall, and I had to go in at an angle.Sometimes I would have to follow up and sink these screws a little deeper.

I have used the screw gun on other miscellaneous non-drywall jobs too, and I have found it to be a simple, easy and fast way to sink screws into any wood job.I would highly recommend it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Incredible waste of money
I purchased a Senco Duraspin screw gun and cut out saw several weeks ago and was rewarded with the biggest disapointment of my life. The screw gun is an absolute waste of money.Right from the box the gun jammed on a regular basis...like one in five screws. There is no reverse so one has to pull the tape through in order to free up the mechanism. You can't do that without wasting other screws and they are expensive! The gun will not operate unless it is aligned at right angles to your work...and I mean it needs to be almost perfect. It is also under powered. You would need three batteries to use the gun in concert with the cutout saw as the batteries don't stay charged long at all.If you are looking for a drywall gun..go electric for less than half the money and get a tool you can work with. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Very good value.
Price and quality all the way. The only negative item would be no rip fence came with the cordless circular saw and I was unable to find it at any of the local hardware stores that I shop at. Other than that it is a very good value.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great 18 Volt tool kit
My kit is very similar but not quite the same it's theFSC618K-2

Anyway I've read some reviews that say the chuck on the drill can't hold a bit at all and its only real use is as an 18-volt screwdriver. I've run a 1/2" bit to the hilt into a 4X4 several times just to test it, and there was no slippage at all. I'm not really sold on the pop off chuck, but it has saved time when I was building some books shelves recently. But I would say that 280 lbs. of torque is plenty for most applications, but have to admit that I am a novice and use the drill/driver around the house. I've only had it a little over a month but have played around with it, and am very impressed with it. Especially when compared to most of the other 18 volt drill/drivers out there. The circular saw cuts 2X4 with no problem and I have used it to cut about 10, 1"X6 "shelf's to length with plenty of power left over. The Cut Saw is just cool. I haven't had time to use it much but in your hands it feels as if it has enough power to do just about anything you might need it to do. The vacuum is a step up from the basic dust buster does a fine job and has great battery life. The flashlight is bright and I've used it to drain the partially used batteries before recharging. My kit is a little different in that I do not have the laser level/stud finder or the work table and the tool bag looks smaller, but this is as close as to what I have as I could find. My kit included the Radio/charger FS100 Stud Finder The Drill Circular Saw, the Cut Saw Light and Vacuum. But other than that the kits are very similar. I bought four extra batteries and the fast multi-volt charger on E-Bay so in case I ever do get busy with the kit I'll be able to keep it powered. I would say you would have a hard time beating this kit for the performance and price (check E-Bay). Plus it's been fun to play with, and I've read DeWalt builds the Firestorm stuff. I am looking forward to putting it to a real test. But I'm sure it will pass any tests I put it through with flying colors.

5-0 out of 5 stars The tools make the man!
Someone once told me a man is only as good as his tool. Well, when I purchased the Black and Decker 7-tool combo kit I became a man and for a year I was king of the neighborhood. I had become the most respected carpenter in the project. I built four house that year and was going strong as I was branching out my business. Until one night I awoke to find some of my tools missing. I figured I must have left them on a job or something. The next day I searched for them but to no avail. The next night I woke and found the rest of the kit gone. The next night I burned the candle at both ends waiting to find the culprit. I had fallen asleep and felt something tugging at my underwear. I awoke and jump out of my seat when I found little gnomes racing through the house holding my underwear in victory. I pulled my best 007 and tracked them down in the crevices of the basement. There they were singing "We are the tool and underwear gnomes. We need lots of supplies to make it on our way. Big business is a freight train on a path to money right away."
I stood there alone and cold as a breeze went up my pajamas, begging for my atleast my hammer in trade for my silence. They simply told me it was my word, a middle aged working class man, against that of a GNOMES. I guess it was back to the drawling board, without a pen. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Plenty of power here
This is a homeowner's dream.I've been looking at the Milwaukee, DeWalt, etc. cordless combos for years but I could not justify the price for my week-end warrior needs. This kit gave me reasonably well-made and well-powered tools at a price I could afford. My son and I built a real tree-house (8x10, 10 ft. high!) over the Thanksgiving using these tools with no problems. The tools all performed and held up well through that 40 hour project. I was glad to have the cordless feature up in those trees 200 feet from the nearest electric outlet. You really do need to cycle the batteries a few times before you get the max life out of them, but the one hour charger does exactly that.I'm also a fairly slow worker(nobody's paying me), so that I rarely needed a new battery before the charging one was ready and if I did, that was a good time for a break (like I said, nobody's paying me for this work).I can see where a professional would need more run-time.

If I were using these tools everyday, I'd shell out for the professional brands, but for my needs they are just right for the price.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent cordless tools
Used this kit many times.Good tools & good battery life. One battery did 10 cuts on 2X6 lumber, then drilled four 1.25" holes with a paddle bit on the drill.Batteries must be charged & completely discharged several times before they have their full power.

3-0 out of 5 stars Maby-
I bought this kit about 3 weeks ago. Do not buy the cordless circular saw.I could only cut a pice of plywood about 20x30 inches on one charge. The drill has only 1 drawback- the cruck is strange and when you try to grab it to tighten down, it slips out of your hand.Flashlight is increadibly bright. The sawzall is nice, but my Craftsman sawzall can out perform it.This kit might be nice for a home owner, but for saws, go corded.

Hope this Helped- ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fast and powerful
This is a surprisingly fast and powerful drill for 12v.I had a Makita 12v cordless for over 5 years that only died because it was dropped.

I was going to switch to a higher voltage but when I tried this one out I thought the size and weight was just right.

The clutch issue that others are mentioning is not a problem.Gears 1, 2, and 3 are low speed/high torque through high speed/low torque. The 24 position clutch limits the motor torque, not the resultant output.

I think this works well, but it is not what you may be used to.The clutch does seem to break-in a little after a few uses.

This is a high quality drill. It is not like one of your B&D, Skil, or Harbor Freight models. This is an example of you get what you pay for.

Drill/drivers are one of those tools that I use a lot.I think that quality is important, and I can't seebuying one of those low grade units. This has more torque and speed than your typical low grade.

    Five stars definately.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great torque and speed for any job
I bought this drill for projects around the house, and it has risen to every challenge. Lots of torque for driving screws into oak. Plenty of speed when used as a grinding wheel. The battery lasts very long.

I haven't had any of the listed problems with the clutch either.

I think it's a great value that will last

3-0 out of 5 stars update to my previous review
After using the DW980 for almost two weeks, I've formed a pretty good impression about it:
    1. In my previous review (9/07/02), I stated that the clutch worked fine in the lowest gear (gear # 1). Well, the truth is that it only works in torgue settings 1-5. The worst thing is Dewalt won't admit the problem, I was told it was normal.
    2. Occasionally, the gears don't shift (it got stuck in the middle). I have to run the motor a bit to complete the shifting.
    3. When stopping in gears #2 & 3, it makes rattling sound.
    4. The high speed is really helpful, it finishes the jobs much cleaner. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Worked well so far
I got this tool after my last drill (a Craftsman 12Volt) was stolen out of my garage.I went back and forth between 14.4 volt and 18 volt drills, but went with the 984K bebause it has a higher peak torque than many other 18V drills. Also, I used the 18V drill, and it's a little heavy to hold over your head for a while.I've used this for drilling holes in metal and wood, and it has performed flawlessly.I'm very happy with this drill.

5-0 out of 5 stars very happy
I purchased the DW984k-2 several months ago and am happy to report that it has performed like a champ. It is a great middle-weight cordless and the hammer function has come in quite handy on several occasions where my corded rotary hammer would have been too much.Perhaps the best feature on this drill is the keyless chuck.Nothing has slipped or skipped so far and I don't expect it will.I highly recommend this drill for anyone who needs a cordless for multiple applications.

5-0 out of 5 stars Strong as Samson!
I just bought this new drill. It is stronger than my old 18 volt Makita.I have been using it to set bolts in rock.DeWalt is rating the 14.4 at 1/4" diameter in masonry, but I am getting 1/2" holes 2" deep with no trouble. The third gear makes a huge difference when drilling into concrete or rock.Trust me, buy this drill and you won't look back. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Pale by comparison
I am a General Contracter in MD. I've owned several Dewalt drills. One old 12v was left on the driveway and run over by a Chevy Suburban and still runs beautifully. However the 18v is the opposite. We have gone through two batterys and was told at the dewalt center they wear out faster. At 14 months the clutch failed and I was told when replacing the clutch the chuck had to be replaced as well. The tool has cost me 250.00 excluding the purchase price. Using several drills on the jobsite the Big Panasonic eats the competition for lunch. The battery lasts 3 to 4 times as long. Better balance. Better tool.

5-0 out of 5 stars the best
Having done commercial AC for 2 years, this drill proved invaluable.Having used last year's equivalant Dewalt has improved greatly on a tried and true design. The 3 speed is useful as is now 3 batteries can be stored in the case(1 in the drill). The pistol grip is more useful than a T-grip as it applies in-line pressure. The workmanship was flawless as is the new 1/2 chuck. the new chuck with carbide teeth really does as promised and holds bits much better. The only downfall is the battery clip. Though never having a battery fall off it still seems a to loose for comfort.A tip:paint the battery and drill and off color. That's why I bought a new one, someone envied my old Dewalt more than I did. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Panasonic cordless drill/saw combo
I've owned a Panasonic 15.6V cordless drill for a couple of years now; it's a fantastic drill, the best I've seen or used. The Ni-Mh batteries are state-of-the-art; the feel and function of the tool is just about perfect. So I decided to get another along with with the cordless circular saw.

The saw is pretty good, kind of rinky-dink as far as rigidity of the saw base, but typical of these tools and it does everything I could want as long as I don't expect it to be a fine finish carpenter's saw.

So why don't I rate this kit 5 stars? Well, the blow-molded cases are worthless. If I pay $360 for a pair of good tools, I expect the case to be good too. This combo case is a huge, very inefficient storage unit with little room left over to easilystore driver/drill bits, spare saw blades, etc. So minus one star for that.

And the saw has a 20mm arbor, which means you are pretty much stuck with buying Panasonic blades for the saw. You can't just go to your local hardware or Big Box store and get the typical sawblade that has a 1/2" arbor. Poor thinking, worth taking off another star.

It's too bad, I think. Panasonic definitely has the jump on every other cordless manufacturer as far as battery technology and ergonomics. They just need to work on a couple of details, and they'd be King.

Some of these manufacturer's oversights make me wonder just who does any "real-world" testing of this stuff before it reaches the marketplace. It can't be working tradespeople, or maybe Panasonic doesn't care much for the feedback?

5-0 out of 5 stars Panasonic tops all others
I managed a national-scope tool store for six years and have been working in construction trade full time for the last three years. The Panasonic drill and saw have proven to be physically tougher, batteries last longer, and have more power than DeWalt, Porter-Cable, and Makita, or any other drill I ever used, sold, or recieved customer feedback on.In our shop, the saw positively humbles our Makita and DeWalt cordless saws for power and battery life ( like 4-5 times the run time - no joke). Our 5 Panasonic 15.6v drills outpower and outlast all the drills we have ever used, including out 18V Makita and 19.2V Porter Cable, while being much lighter. If you try one of these, you will not be dissapointed.Only tip - pick up a few extra blades, they are a bit hard to come by.
Other companies may do a better job marketing, but Panasonic does a better job buiding quality tools that perform better than the others in a hard use setting such as my cabinet shop. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Unparalleled Value
For the price, this 12-volt cordless drill by Hitachi cannot be matched. It is reliable, durable, lightweight, comfortable in its use, and the battery life is well above average.

I am a professional auto mechanic, and use it on a daily basis as a light-duty electric nut driver. My only criticism is that the self-locking chuck is too quick to release when challenged by the laws of physics...which was easily cured by an extra twist with a pair of channel locks.

I use an 18-volt Ryobi for most of my home projects, and the 12-volt Hitachi is a far superior tool, and at considerably less expense - more compact, superior battery life, and lighter weight give it a clear advantage over the heavier, bulkier Ryobi.

This tool is a must for non-professional home-improvement types, and professionals may be surprised by the overall versatility and usability of this tool.

4-0 out of 5 stars Impressive, solid little drill.
Weight and price lured me to this drill. I work in a cabinet shop and found the 18 volt yellow and 14.4 volt red drills the other blokes had a bit bulky and heavy for all-day use (plus, I have access to their drills and our electric ones, as well). For screw and glue assembly this drill is a gem--it delivers just enough torque to sink everything home and won't break the heads off coarse drywall screws. Pre-drilling / Countersinking operations take a little longer than with more powerful models (and since time is money, I often keep a second, more powerful drill handy for the pre-drilling. I've drilled pocket holes with this Hitachi from time to time, but prefer to use an electric drill (or a heavy cordless drill on a jobsite) with the Kreg jig. I've also drilled dowel holes in 1 3/4 Mahogany with this drill--not without some effort, though. The light weight and compact size of this drill have come in handy for all of us--several corners in a recent kitchen remodel could only be reached with this drill, not with the larger cordless units.

My purchase of this drill prompted one shop member to purchase an even lighter 9.6 volt yellow brand. Initial impressions are that the two are about equal. One disadvantage to the yellow 9.6 volt is that it cannot be stood upright on its base. Since each falls in the same price range, I'd recommend the Hitachi for this one reason.

Battery expenditure is fairly frequent, and perhaps a negative for some reviewers / readers. But keeping the spare in the charger has never left me without juice. Just remember to take the charger to the job site!

I can't comment yet on the longevity of the batteries (still going strong after a year of daily use). When they do finally die, I'll be able to get two for 70 bucks by purchasing another drill! (not bad, since some brands charge 70 bucks for one battery alone). Also worth noting is that Hitachi makes a 12 volt hammer drill that uses the same batteries.

I really don't use the flashlight, but it is nifty in that the head angles and it is free-standing. Rather, I use the flashlight's space in the case for bits and so on The case, by the way, is not as rugged as other brands (especially the sliding hinges). My assumption is that Hitachi has eliminated the frills of a great case to keep the price low.

For the price and performance, this little Hitachi is a great buy. It probably all a home do-it-yourselfer needs, and again, it works for 90% of the jobs in the shop. It has taken some abuse and suffered some job site falls, but has not been damaged. Yes, eventually, I will be buying a second, heavier duty drill--probably the red 14.4 workhorse (now that it has been beefed up to well over 400 lbs. of torque), but a second drill will simply complement, not retire this drill. I highly recommend this little Hitachi. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Overall...Pleased with the purchase.
I bought this kit after comparing Ridgid, Dewalt, Milwaukee, and Craftsman, (and of course, the lower priced kit from Black/Decker, Ryobi, Bosch, Skil, etc., but those kits I found in my area shyed me away because of longevity versus price.)
I found the Makita 6-1/2" circ. saw the best on the market. The safety button is definitly the easiest to use while holding it at any angle. The saw is very well balanced. Height, angle, and rip fence settings are very easy to do. On-board allen wrench storage makes for quick and easy blade changes. One drawback is the lack of a dust exhaust chute, causing the cut line to get covered (directly in front of the saw) after about 5 feet of ripping a 4x8 sheet.
The recip-saw is a well balanced saw also. It features tool-less blade and rest-shoe changes. The motors for both of these saws provide plenty of cutting power. The safety button for the recip-saw isn't as superior as the circ-saw is, as it can be more difficult to engage at certain angles. Being able to depress it from either the left or the right is about its only savior in those situations.
The drill is excellent. Very well balanced, and light weight for an 18 volt, (versus others I compared). Powerful, but slightly in need of a little more torque. Drove 3-1/2 and 4 inch screws easily while I was framing a house, but I did find it to have less torque than the Dewalt counterpart we were also using, but not enough that I would throw the Makita away and replace it with a Dewalt. Drill/Driver clutch lock-out and speed settings very easy to engage. Foward/Reverse switch easily located at the side of the trigger, (not like the Makita 9.6V stick battery drill I have).
The flashlight....well, it's a flashlight. What do you want ? At first I thought of removing it from my kit altogether, but it does come in handy when crawling into the dark voids of someones attic.
The case is nicely made, holding all the tools tightly in their spots, (even while rolling down the hill). Storage for recip and circ blades, as well as a (1) battery molded in. The other battery is stored by leaving it in the drill or the saws, but not the flashlight. Spot for the charger also, as well as some driver bits and a quick change coupler. A little extra room also allowed me to store small drill bit kits inside.
It would have been nice if Makita would put a third or even a fourth battery in the kit, but no other manufacturer I found does either. The 2 batteries are powerful, and long lasting though. Two should get you through a days work.

UPDATE: 2 batteries should be enough for a day if you are not constantly using the tools all day long. Recommend charging them at the end of the day to be ready for the next day, but not always necessary. If you are framing a house or something like that, you'll probably charge them once or twice (using 3 to 6 batteries a day, but that's the drill and both saws humming along). Consider getting another drill kit or something that is also 18V(2.6ah at least). I bought another 6347D drill kit, as it came with 2 more batteries and another charger. Better deal than buying everything separately.
Also, the drill that came in this 4 piece kit was made in Feb. 2003, as per the date code on it (date code is 03.02). I have had no problems with this drill what so ever. The date of the drill that was purchased separately is Nov. 2003 (03.11), and I have found that Makita had a bad batch produced during the end of 2003. I know of 3 other people that bought theirs at the same time I did, and had the same failure I did. Transmission broke. To be honest, the transmission probably had a flaw, but it broke when a co-worker was mixing (dry powder type) thin-set. He should have used a corded, heavy duty drill.
Next....If you're like me, and just couldn't stand the safety button on the recip-saw any longer, remove the lock and spring from inside the trigger housing area. Remove the retaining screws on the back "half" and the housing will come apart easily. I also took a Dremel grinder to the area where the battery is inserted, to make battery removal easier. A little too much plastic in that area when it was molded, and made battery removal difficult. An alternative is to loosen the 2 screws closest to the battery opening a little bit.
A note on the circ-saw...use a plywood/veneer blade (I think mine is 100 or 140 tooth) backwards to cut vinyl siding. Works great. Just put a scrap board underneath for support. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

Anyone who has tried working with a Sawzall in cramped quarters and making cuts in confined spaces will appreciate the Hatchet's multiposition folding handle, which reduces the tool's length to a mere 13 inches. While this is a truly innovative design for a reciprocating saw, the fact that this is also the first cordless Sawzall with a vibration-reducing counterbalance mechanism should not be overlooked. This is a feature many of us have been waiting to see in the cordless Sawzall, and it is especially appreciated in uncomfortably close quarters, where any extra vibration and shock just makes your job more difficult. The Hatchet also has a different trigger configuration than other reciprocating saws. When the handle is folded, it feels like a cordless-drill grip and trigger, and when the saw is extended to its full length, it feels like the barrel grips found on grinders. This trigger setup is great when the handle is folded, but not as ideal when the tool is at its full length and being used like a traditional Sawzall. As with Milwaukee's other Sawzalls, this one features the excellent tool-free blade-changing system that reverses the blade when needed, and it has a fully adjustable pivoting shoe. The Hatchet's tough motor provides 2,700 strokes per minute, comparable to other top-of-the-line cordless reciprocating saws, and the tool uses the same reversible 18-volt Power Plus battery as other Milwaukee cordless tools. This kit comes with the Hatchet, a 2.4 amp-hour battery pack, a carrying case, a universal charger, and two blades. For remodelers, plumbers, and electricians, we think there's no better cordless reciprocating saw available. --Brian Trinen ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars try again
This Saw is the worst tool from Milwaukee that I have ever purchased! It has weak gears in it , as far as I could tell, and have stripped out on me three times so far. They fix it but it strips again eventualy. I will buy another corded sawzall by Millwaukee , those cannot be beat. As for cordless , I just don't know.

4-0 out of 5 stars The surgical sawzall
I have an 11 amp corded super sawzall and the Hatchet. For general demolition, the cordless Hatchet cannot compete with the corded sawzall, but there are some situations where the Hatchet excels.

Because it's battery powered, the cordless Hatchet has a much smoother operation (a bit like the difference between a cordless and corded drill). The ultra-smoothand controllable movement combined with the shorter stroke length makes it ideal for delicate situations like cutting around wires, copper pipe, and other stuff that I don't want to nick when remodeling.I also prefer the Hatchet over a corded sawzall for light demolition work like cutting into drywall. The Hatchet makes drywall installation and demolition really fun and easy.

Since it's cordless it's easy to move the Hatchet around, especially in rooms that don't have electrical service yet. It's also my tool of choice for headering off joists on remodel jobs.It can fit between joists that are spaced 16" O.C. and flush cut right through them with the blade facing up.A standard sawzall is too long to do this. The corded version of the Hatchet sawzall would be even better for this application because it probably has more power.

My only complaint with the cordless Hatchet is that it's really difficult to remove the battery (hence the 4 stars, see update below).I don't know if this is a design flaw that affects all 18V Milwaukee products or if my Hatchet is an isolated instance. It's a cinch to remove the battery from my 14.4V Milwaukee drill, though.

For serious use, you'll need at least 2-3 batteries and/or a corded sawzall. As a cordless tool, the Hatchet is great, but don't expect it to be able to handle tough situations.

UPDATE: I have since purchased other Milwaukee 18V tools and have noticed that their battery design has been updated. The battery that came with the Hatchet doesn't release well as I mentioned, but my three newer 18V batteries that I have work smoothly on the Hatchet. So I've increased my rating to 5 stars. The local Milwaukee repair center suggested that I loosen the screws in the battery that wasn't releasing easily.Doing this fixed the problem.

5-0 out of 5 stars Handy, handy saw
I liked the corded 11a orbital Sawzall so much I went out and bought the cordless Hatchet as well.It has proved to be a quality , useful, and very handy tool. The 18v Hatchet also has orbital action which increases it's usefulness, and it is lighter than the corded one. However, if you have major demo work to do, grab the corded Sawzall. The corded Sawzall can't be beat for big, difficult jobs, but this is the one to take when you have a few cuts to make or need to get into a tight space. The battery run time is actually quite good, but it you are in an attic or crawl space, you might want to take a spare battery just to make sure. It can be used one-handed, and the folding handle makes the saw very versatile.I actually find that I use it as much or more than the corded Sawzall, but I wouldn't want to be without the corded one either.Overall, I have been very happy with this quality tool. ... A great combination for the serious do-it-yourselfer or professional, Porter-Cable's 19.2-volt Quad Pack combo kit comes with four of the most popular and useful portable tools in the Porter-Cable line. First, as with many of the Porter-Cable combo kits, this one comes with two ni-cad rechargeable batteries and a diagnostic charger with an LED warning system. The batteries are interchangeable so they'll work with other Porter-Cable 19.2-volt tools. Each charges in less then an hour and provides plenty of run time for most uses. The batteries have a unique slide-on loading system in the base of each tool that makes battery attachment extremely tight and almost impervious to wear. The 19.2-volt hammer drill has a 1/2-inch keyless chuck that's easy to adjust and reacts quickly to the trigger. It offers 390 inch-pounds of maximum torque, a 20-position clutch, and a two-speed gearbox that does up to 1,500 rotations per minute and 19,500 beats per minute. This is plenty of power for any home-based project, and generally plenty of power for professionals. It's relatively lightweight and, in our opinion, as solid as any drill/driver we've used. The Saw Boss 19.2-volt cordless circular saw uses a 6-inch blade, turns up to 3,250 rpm, and makes up to 100 crosscuts on two-by-four material on a single charge. There's an easy-to-adjust guide plate for both bevel and depth of cut. The 19.2-volt Tiger Saw offers a Quik-Change blade clamp, a 1-inch stroke, and variable speed up to 2,900 strokes per minute. The grips are well designed and easy to hold. We were impressed with the solid feel and smooth cut of the Saw Boss and Tiger Saw, and quickly found ourselves reaching for these cordless tools more often than their corded counterparts. Finally, the flashlight offers a 110-degree swiveling head and heavy-duty xenon bulb and comes with an extra bulb. --Jonathon Tudor ... Read more

    5-0 out of 5 stars A rancher's boon
More often than not, a 110VAC outlet will be unavailable where the work is on a ranch. I have owned AEG and Makita battery powered tools. When this Porter Cable set went on sale, I figured it was time to give it a go.

For serious work, I'll grab the Milwaukee walking saw, hammer drill, etc. and toil on a project within reach of an extension cord. Repairing a feed bin or setting H's and fence corners, this Porter-Cable kit fits the bill perfectly.

Two years have passed since that day of purchase and I am still a satisfied customer. Considering the hours of useage, one of the batteries does take quite some time to recharge.

Shopping for powercells may induce stickershock. It appears all are seemingly over costly; but for the convenience, I'm still hooked. Milwaukee and Porter-Cable remain my first choices in powertools with Makita in third place.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money...
Porter Cable's 19.2 Volt line has major flaws. I bought the driver and saw kit and the hammer drill kit. In the first year I replaced the drill/drivers three times...while under warranty. The saw worked well and the flashlight was the best part of this kit. Now it is a couple years old and the batteries are dead and at $90 each I am not replacing them. I bought Hitachi this time with a five year warranty. I wasted $600 on the Porter Cable junk.

5-0 out of 5 stars My Favorite
I'm a home improvement contractor. I bought this combo kit because I needed to replace my 20-year-old half-inch hammer drill. I figured I'd get the combo with the 6 ½" saw just so I wouldn't have to break out extensions for jus a couple of cuts. I've had the saw out of the case for more than three week already and I haven't put it down! This thing works great! My partner and I are both using it, so it's in constant operation. I've cut 100 year old nail imbedded oak (didn't see the nails), as well as more traditional spruce-pine-fir.

The drill works great too; not as difficult to handle as I thought an 18 volt would be, and it's the first drill with a chuck that I really holds what I put in it, even in the hammer mode.

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT COMO PACK
This is a great package. The hammer drill has tons of torque and the clutch works well to match the power to the type of project your are doing. The 2.4 amp batteries provide excellent run time. I have drilled oak 4x4's with 2" forestner bits with no lack of power and the chuck grips very tight. The saw is balanced and powerful. I highly recommend this package to anyone who is looking for quality, reliabilty, and a good value. ... Read more

Impressively compact, lightweight, and comfortable to use, Panasonic's 12-volt drill/driver fits into tight spaces where other bulkier drills won't. What about power? This Panasonic packs up to 293 inch-pounds of torque, while the motor's speed control allows full torque delivery at any speed, with dual speed ranges of 0 to 400 and 1 to 1,300 rpm. The 2 amp ni-cad batteries provide solid run time and charge in just 30 minutes. But the first thing you notice about this tool is how compact it is (the chassis measures only 8 inches) and how comfortable it feels in your hand. The soft-pad grip provides extra cushion and the balance is superb, two important features if you wield a cordless day in and day out. The tool lacks an onboard bit holder, but that's about all it lacks. This drill is a smart buy for plumbers, electricians, carpenters, and even woodworkers--in short, anyone who wants a small, compact drill that packs a lot of torque and is built to last. 5-0 out of 5 stars Best of the best
I have used many cordless driver / drills over the years - this one is the best.

Perfectly balanced, very lightweight, and extremely powerful - it rivals my Bosch 18V.

The drill / driver really impressed me most with it's ability to drive a 3" deck screw, whilst I barely squeezed the trigger - the torque is phenomenal!

This is the second one I have purchased - the one I bought for work 3 years ago is still going strong, and was recommended to me by our supplier (who deals in all the top names).

You won't be disappointed and at $130 it's a bargain!

5-0 out of 5 stars I bought it based on the reviews
I needed to replace a cordless screwdriver that the battery no longer holds a charge, as well as a corded drill that has seen better days. The low speed on this Panasonic cordless drill does so much better than the old cordless screwdriver and the high speed nearly matches the old corded drill. Nice feel, good balance.I hope this one lasts. So far, I'm pleased with my purchase.

This is a great package deal for serious woodworkers and carpenters who don't like messing around with cords. The Brute Tough drill has an ABS/vinyl housing designed to stand up to the roughest job site conditions and a Bosch-built unibody power train that contains the motor, gearbox, and clutch in one contiguous unit for durability and the best alignment possible. It has a two-speed gearbox that offers up to 500 inch-pounds of torque in high-torque mode and up to 1,300 rpm in high-speed mode, as well as a 16-position clutch, a tight-gripping ratcheting chuck, and a soft ergonomic grip. Woodworkers who like the smooth, accurate performance of Bosch's jig saws will appreciate the cordless model included in this package. I'd like to be able to buy just the cordless planer with out all the other tools included

5-0 out of 5 stars Bosch cordless combo pack
As a person who was in the construction field I know which products will last, and which ones I wouldn't use if the Manufacturer gave them to me for free. My doubts about buying the drill, the planner and the jigsaw on line before I could actually feel the weight displacement and the ease of the buttons was dispelled the minute I opened up the box. This Bosch cordless combo set is truly a solid piece of equipment, I have no doubt it will last me for a very long time. It's a great addition to my tool collection.THANKS BOSCH & AMAZON ... Editorial Review

The DeWalt DW983KS-2 combo kit contains two indispensable toolsfor any tool chest--a 1/2-inch drill/driver and a 5-3/8-inch trim saw.Built to handle virtually any application, both the drill/driver andtrim saw utilize DeWalt's 14.4-volt XR battery packs. A DeWaltexclusive, the system combines unbeatable power with extended run timebetween charges. The trim saw weighs just 6-3/4 pounds, delivers 3,000rpm, cuts to a depth of 1-1/2 inches, and provides a 0 to 50 degreebevel capacity. The drill/driver is also lightweight at 5.2 pounds, andoffers three speeds--low, for maximum torque (400 in./lbs.); medium, forstandard jobs; and high, for jobs that require a little extra speed(reaching up to 1,800 rpm, it's up to 29 percent faster than comparablemodels). In addition to both of these powerful tools, the DW983KS-2 kitalso includes a carbide blade, two XR batteries, a one-hour charger, adouble-ended screwdriver bit, and a convenient carrying case, not tomention the peace of mind that comes with the DeWalt name. --CarlThress ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Priced right-great value
I bought this kit to complete a project for my grand-daughter. I really just needed the saw, but the combo price was too good to miss, besides, who doesn't need another cordless drill? The only negative comment I have is that when I cut just a couple of 4x8' sheets of plywood (ripping 8') the battery on the saw needs a boost. Otherwise the saw is light to handle, durable for the job and the blade holds up a very long time. I prefer carbide for all my cutting tools. This combo kit is a great value.

5-0 out of 5 stars just the right size
I'm a carpenter - visited many job sites and worked with lots of other guy's tools too. This size seems to be the best for hauling up and down ladders - in/out basements, crawlspaces, attics....some of the bigger ones get too big!

1-0 out of 5 stars Where is it? Still waiting.....
Well, I too have waited 3 weeks now to get shipment of my order. They keep telling me it is delayed and it is now delayed another week out. I wish that they could at least update their website with an estimated shipping date when you purchase the product. Instead, shipment was estimated at 2-3 days when I purchased the product. They don't want to scare you away from that initial purchase - noooo. But in the end, that business practice will make your customers MUCH more irate than just telling them up front that they'll have to wait for the order. It's made me mad!!Still waiting.... ... Editorial Review

Impressively compact, lightweight, and comfortable to use, Panasonic's 12-volt drill/driver fits into tight spaces where other bulkier drills won't. The 3 amp NiMH batteries deliver impressive run time per charge, which is a big plus, especially if you need a tool for continuous use. What about power? This Panasonic packs up to 293 inch-pounds of torque, while the motor's speed control allows full torque delivery at any speed, with dual speed ranges of 0 to 400 and 1 to 1,300 rpm. The 1/2-inch chuck takes bigger bits. The first thing you notice about this tool, however, is how compact it is (the chassis measures only 8-3/16 inches) and how comfortable it feels in your hand. The package includes two of Panasonic's long-lasting 3 amp NiMH batteries, a universal charger, and a hard-plastic carrying case. --Jon Groebner ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent drill
This is an excellent drill. At 12-Volts this Panasonic packs plenty of punch, and maintains constant speed under load. The finish is excellent and all parts fit together snugly. This drill has just the right weight and size, and fits comfortably in your hand. The Panasonic kit comes with two 3.0 amp batteries so you always have one in the ready. My battery lasts a full day with heavy use.

I bought the Panasonic to replace a 12-V Makita. The Panasonic has more power at the same voltage (the 3 amp batteries). Small drill bits will not spin in the chuck!!! The electronic brake is also excellent, althought this can't be good for the brushes. No problems so far.

My only complaint is that the trigger needs to be more sensitive/responsive. It slowly increases RPM's as you depress it, and then goes right to full speed.

Overall, I highly recommend this drill for all general tasks. It will out-perform other 12V drills, and is just the right weight to carry around or for working overhead.

4-0 out of 5 stars Perfect combination of weight and power.
I bought this model about 6 months ago and am impressed with its ergonomics, weight, and decent power.I was looking for a new cordless to add to my collection of drills and narrowed my choices down to this drill and the 12 volt Makita 6217DWDEX.The Panosonic is about a 1/4 lbs lighter- at 4 pounds, has a 1/2" chuck versus a 3/8" chuck, and comes with 3amp ni-mh batteries versus 2.6 amp ni-mh for the Makita. Why a 12 volt?Because of weight. What's been happening to cordless drills over the last 2-3 years is ridiculous. The 18 and 24 volt models are now weighing in at around six pounds, are a foot long, and cost twice as much as a good quality high amp corded drill.Torque? How much do you need?More on that later.Anyway, let's talk about this Panasonic drill.
The build quality is excellent. The seams line up perfectly, decals are put on straight, and there were no flaws in its apperance. The grip on this drill is made of a "grippy" rubber which prevents slippage if your hands are sweaty. This "grippy" rubber handle runs up the back of the drill. This could provide a little bit of cushioning protection if you accidentally drop the drill onto a hard surface. The 1/2" keyless ratcheting chuck grips bits very tightly.I haven't had any round shank drills spin on me.I checked the run out of the chuck with a gauge pin and Starrett test indicator and obtained a reading of .004" runout.Quite acceptable for a hand held drill. The 3 amp batteries have ventilation slots in the bottom. This is an important feature because the number one enemy of batteries is heat.Excessive heat will kill batteries. This heat is generated when recharging batteries or if the tool is under a very heavy load. The battery life is excellent so far.I've drivenover 300 number 12 screws, 2", on a single charge into treated deck lumber. I've also used a 1 inch spade drill to drill through several 2"thick floor joists and the drill hasn't bogged down. One thing I did notice is that the drill handle gets hot under extended use.The battery doesn't get hot, just the handle and the bottom of the drill housing. This concerns me a little.Heat kills motors eventually. I'll have to keep an eye on this. The batteries have an excellent "shelf life." I've left one of my batteries in the case without charging it for 4 months and it still has a strong charge.
On to rpm, torque, and the clutch. This drill like most has two speed ranges-low, up to 400rpm and high, up to 1300rpm. The trigger on this drill is average. What I mean is that once the trigger is depressed about 2/3rds of the way the drill kicks into maximum rpm.I would like to have a more sensitive trigger. This is my only major complaint about the operation of this drill. By the way, the electric brake on this drill is fabulous! It stops the drill so quickly that the drill actually twitches in your hand when you release the trigger. It's instantaneous! There are 18 clutch settings. The clutch collar clicks solidly when adjusting the clutch and doesn't jump out of position. The torque rating on this drill is advertised to be 293 in. pounds in low gear with the clutch locked out. This is wrong! The actual torque is 199 in. lbs.The 293 in. lbs. is what Panasonic calls its "free load" torque. This "free load" torque is based on mathematical calculations that consider the gear train, magnets in the motor, electrical motor efficiency, and amperage provided by the batteries. It's a theoretical measurement.Under load-when work is actually being done- the actual torque is about 30% less than the advertised torque. What!Don't worry, Dewalt, Makita, Bosch, and Milwaukee, all the premium brands, advertise in the same manner. It's deceptive and unethical (part of the "torque war" that's going on right now), but helps to explain why when a group of 12volt, or 14.4 volt, or 18 volt drills are tested, they are all nearly identical in performance. Some may drill a few more holes, some may drive a few more lag bolts, but the results are pretty close to each other.I knew thetorque of this drill was less than advertised before I bought it and wasn't too concerned about it. 199 in lbs. will easily twist the heads off of 10# wood screws if you don't pre drill holes- I've done that. Here's a tip.Whatever the advertised torque is on a cordless drill- subtract 30% from it to get the actual torque. One last comment about torque and this Panasonic. This drill has a feature called "full torque speed control." This means you get the same amount of maximum torque in low range with the clutch locked out no matter how far you depress the trigger. You get the same maximum torque at 70 rpm as you do at 400rpm.This provides great control when driving fasteners. You don't have to "open up" the rpm's to get that extra torque to seat a stubborn screw or lag bolt.
My final conclusion about this drill is that it is well built, lightweight, has enough torque for 95% of your jobs, and has unbelievable battery life. Why lug around a 6 pound 18 volt or 24 volt drill all day when a compact 12 volt will handle almost any fastening or drilling job you encounter?Isee a lot of electricians and hvac people use Panasonic 12 volt drills, and I understand why. Nobody wants to stand on a ladder and hold some behemoth drill overhead all day. I would rate this drill as 4- to 4 1/2 stars.I think the trigger should be more sensitive and I am a little concerned about the drill becoming hot under extended use, but I think it has the best combination of weight, ergonomics, battery life, and torque of any compact drill on the market.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good replacement
Well made replacement for older model Panasonic 12v which lasted 7 years - -the trigger operation does jump from very slow to fast rather abruptly - I would prefer a more gradual, smoother transition. ... Read more

Delivering solid performance and serious convenience, DeWalt'sheavy-duty, 18-volt, 1/2-inch drill/driver/hammer drill will do up to2,000 rpm and 34,000 beats per minute, and can produce 450 inch-poundsof maximum sustained torque. The carbide-tipped chuck jaws haveexcellent bit grip. There's also an automatic spindle lock, as well asan antislip comfort grip. Essentially the same tool as DeWalt's T-gripDW988, this hammer drill comes with a pistol grip, which some usersprefer because it makes it easy to put your full force directly behindthe bit. A pistol grip, however, doesn't distribute weight as evenly asa T-grip, so it's not as comfortable to hold, especially over longperiods of time. --Jonathon Tudor ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Contracter tough cordless drill
First I'll highlight my experience to lend weight to my review.I am a serious DIY'er who occasional does side jobs on my own, and who often gets calls from contracters when they need a hand on a weekend job(My day job is in computers, I'm so ashamed!!).

This drill is a little different than most drills on the market because of its pistol grip design, but don't let that scare you off. That pistol grip lets you apply an incredible amount of pressure directly behind the bit your using. It does take some getting used to, but once you figure out that your index finger and thumb fit perfectly in the two groves along the top of the drill you'll love it.This drill excels for working above your head or below your feet but is very usable in the horizontal plane.

    Pros:
1.Monster single sleeve racheting chuck is a joy to use, with the spindle lock it is hands down the best chuck on the market
2.3 speeds is useful as hell. 1 for driving big screws/self feed bits, 2 for driving normal screws and spade bits 3 for twist bits (my recommendations)
3.Hammer drill, I can't say how great it is to not have to go back to the truck to get your hammer drill to drill just 4 holes
4.Inline handle makes it so much easier to apply force directly behind the bit, doesn't end stripping out bits/screws but delays it quite a bit

    Cons:
1.Doesn't do stud cavity work easily
2.Speed change can be a little sticky

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Drill!
Good drill indicative of DeWALTS better tools.Very nice combo kit!The pistol grip has the added advantage of being able to apply more force through the bit into the work. This drill has plenty of torque for just about any job and the battery run/charge time ranges from good to great. It's probably easier just to list a couple of improvement areas (nonimpacting overall):
    1) The speed range selecting switch needs to be persuaded on occasion to change position.
    2) The torque clutch works better on the second and third speed range.
    3) The chuck's run out could be a little better, although there is no impact from this when drilling.

All and all this is a great drill package!I'm very happy with my purchase!! ... Read more
