    Editorial Review

For many jobs, a small cordless drill is you need. But if you have more demanding projects in mind, DeWalt's 18-volt 3/8-inch cordless compact drill/driver can get the job done. The DeWalt drill/driver operates at 0-450 and 0-1,500 rpm and delivers up to 400 in./lbs. of muscle to bore through wood, metal or masonry. With an all-metal 5-5-5 planetary gear transmission, this workhorse is built to last. But brute force is by no means the DeWalt's only charm. Handy features like an 18-position adjustable clutch, 3/8-inch keyless ratcheting chuck, integrated lock-off button, and electric brake make this tool as versatile as it is strong. Add to that a comfortable grip, light weight (just 4.5 pounds) and ergonomic design, and you have a pretty good contender in the 18-volt class.--Carl Thress ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars good tool, but batteries are weak
this is a good, solid and reliable drill, can handle rough use and doesnt break.easy to adjust clutch and quick change chuck.only problem is the batteries dont run long even when fully charged, especially when cold. need longer life batteries, get the XRP batteries.

5-0 out of 5 stars AMAZING
My husband has used a black & decker drill for several years and has "served him well" but it always took forever to complete a job because it was so weak.Well now he flies through projects and even after it fell off a 15ft roof. The battery fell out-- he popped it back in and it has worked like a charm.

5-0 out of 5 stars Indestructable
I have had one of these for several years and it is my most reliable possession!I dropped it off a roof and onto the driveway and I thought... oh ..., there goes ... down the drain.I picked it up, slapped the battery pack back in and to my suprise, went right back to work! --Bulletproof ... All batteries are not equal. DeWalt did some thinking and rebuilt these beauties, so the XR+ units offer extended run time with 2.4amp hour Cobalt NiCD cells. It’s a high-capacity battery that actually gives you up to 40 percent more run time, and in our book, time is money. We noticed the new battery latch design and think that’s an improvement, too, for faster, easier battery change-out on DeWalt’s entire line of 18-volt cordless tools. If you don’t have one, you’ll want to pick up the updated 9116 charger, too.--Kris Jensen-Van Heste ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great price and delivered before the estimate
I was looking for replacement batteries after the originals failed to perform.I looked around and found a another brand that has a direct replacement. Then I found this offer for two DeWalt replacement batteries at the super low price, I had to purchase these.

So far, the batteries have performed as I expected. In my case, the batteries were delivered before the estimated delivery date.

5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT VALUE
THESE ARE A EXCELLENT VALUE. AFTER A LOT OF SEARCHING LOCALLY AND ON THE INTERNET SINGLE 18 VOLT BATTERIES WERE RUNNING REAL CLOSE TO $80 DOLLARS. WHEN YOU CAN BUY TWO FOR $55 DOLLARS WHY SHOP ANYWHERE ELSE AND SPEND MORE FOR QENUINE 18 VOLT DEWALT BATTERIES.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Price on DeWalt Batteries
Presumably, each DW9096 in the pack works as well as the single item (see reviews on DW9096).This is a great price for a pair.I was looking for cheap batteries for my DeWalt equipment and found a 1.4 Amp hour battery for $54, but at only a buck or two more (per battery) for these, I will get the genuine, high-capacity thing! As soon, that is, as I scrape the money together. ... Remember how cool we all thought that first Dremel was? We're reliving the feeling with this one: lighter, faster, smarter, better, and stronger. The main improvement over the last generation is the battery source: lithium-ion. There are so many reasons to applaud. Lithium holds its charge up to six times longer in storage than nickel-cadmium batteries, so it's ready when you are. Remember the disappointment when you were ready and your battery was low? That won't happen with this one. It's got a battery fuel gauge that tells you how much life is left before a recharge, so you won't be caught without your Dremel, and if you choose to keep it on its charger, you won't cause memory and shorten the charge capacity. It's small, it's light, it's comfortable and maneuverable; it's everything the corded models are, but without the cord. We love it.--Kris Jensen-Van Heste ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Cord or cordless?
I bought the Dremel 10.8v rotary cordless drill for the purpose of removing tile grout. At first it worked well. But, the battery only lasted 45 minutes. Then the problems started. The 1/16 inch grout bits only lasted a few minutes then broke. I had better luck when I was removing 1/8 inch grout because the 1/8 inch bit lasted for hours before it started getting dull. Since the grout bits are not well made, I found another brand that cuts much better, much cheaper in price, and last longer.

I HAD to get the grout removed and this was the only tool I found that would do that. But, after a few days the Dremel broke. I still had grout to take care of, so I bought a corded Dremel to continue the work while the cordless was sent in for repairs. To the credit of Dremel, the cordless was promptly repaired and returned along with a free accessory for my trouble. I started using the cordless again and it stopped working again. This time it just stayed on fast speed. So, off it went to the post office again to send in this thing for repair. It is repaired again, but this time I am using the corded Dremel.

I also tried the tool on other jobs such as removing paint from a window frame, sanding a small section of wood, drilling a pilot hole for a screw, and cutting off a screw that I could not remove. What I found was that the Dremel did a fair job if you have a steady hand. However, some of the accessories either break easily or grind down quickly. And these accessories are not cheap. You can easily spend 3 times the price in bits and accessories than what you pay for the tool itself.

The bottom line is, this thing is mostly good for small work such as crafts. But, can also come in handy when a large drill or sander just will not fit. Just stay away from the cordless.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best
This dremel is the best cordless rotary tool out there it has plenty of power with power to spare there just isn't enough room for me to say how good it is.Plus the customer support is just amazing they care about the customer and they are willing to help above and beyond.

5-0 out of 5 stars State of the Art in cordless Dremel tools
I have used Dremel tools for over 30 years and have recently found that cordless tools of any brand add another dimension to a tools user friendliness. I tried a number of other Dremel like tools that were cordless, but none could compare to this tool. If you need a rotary tool like this one, spend you money on this one. You will be glad you did. ... Read more

Impressively compact, lightweight, and comfortable to use, Panasonic's 15.6-volt drill/driver fits into tight spaces where other bulkier drills won't. The 3-1/2 amp NiMH batteries deliver remarkable run time per charge, which is a big plus, especially if you need a tool for continuous use. What about power? This Panasonic packs up to 390 inch-pounds of torque--as much (if not more) than anyone needs in a cordless tool. The motor's speed control allows full torque at any speed, so you can apply full torque while still maintaining control. The tool features dual speed ranges of 65 to 450 and 200 to 1,450 rpm. The 1/2-inch chuck takes bigger bits. The first thing you notice about this tool, however, is how compact it is (the chassis measures only 8-1/2 inches) and how comfortable it feels in your hand. The soft-pad grip provides extra cushion and the tool's balance is superb, two important features if you wield a cordless day in and day out. The tool lacks an onboard bit holder, but that's about all it lacks. The 3-1/2 amp batteries are ventilated, so they last longer, delivering up to 1,200 charges and recharges. This drill is a smart buy for plumbers, electricians, carpenters, and even woodworkers--in short, anyone who wants a small, compact drill that packs a lot of torque and is built to last. The package includes a 55-minute universal charger and hard-plastic carrying case. --Jon Groebner ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Unhappy with adjustable clutch
My last drill was a Makita 14.4v, and I stepped up to the Panasonic because of the great reviews, the small size and decent power, and most of all, because it uses the same battery as the metal cutting rotary saw that my company supplies...a great tool.I wish I could say the same of the drill. I am a commercial electrician and use a cordless everyday for screwing and cutting holes with "hole shooter" bits in metal framing. The Panasonic definitely has less power than my old Makita, and my biggest gripe is that the clutch setting always pops out of "drill" mode to the variabe settings for screwing. What a pain to constantly reset the thing from the top of a ladder with hands full, especially when I have the drill squeezed into a tight spot. I think if I was a carpenter and used it mainly for screwing it would be fine, but for an electrician a lockable setting on the clutch control like Makita makes is a must. Like others have said, it is also difficult to quickly re-chuck a bit on center without fumbling around with closing the chuck to just larger than the bit size before inserting the bit. For a professional dong production work, this is not a good option.

I look forward to trying a Panasonic again when they make some refinements to its design. In the mean time I am going to return this one and get another Makita or maybe try a refurbished Hitachi.

5-0 out of 5 stars now if I could only get my construction job back!
I will not wax eloquent on the many features of this fine, fine tool, for many others have done so better than I. But just holding this drill will send chills down your spine. 1-0 out of 5 stars stinks
batteries.this is a great product killed by now having internal batteries.versapak version was great, but this "next generation" model just doesn't hack it.you can take my word on it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Junk, not made to last!
My Dustbuster lasted a whole two years, but the last year it would only work for 3-4 minutes before the charge ran out.I found myself running like a maniac to quickly clean up a mess before the battery ran down.It also has low suction, so heavier things like sand don't get sucked up completely. This is one of several Black & Decker appliances I have been dissappointed with in the last few years. From the product lifespan, to the lack of customer service - they aren't the same company my parents loved. My mother had one of the earliest dustbusters which lasted 10 years, and charged like a champ.Oh well.

Instead, I recommend the Euro-Pro shark.I have had one for a while now, and love it.It has a very long cord, it's lightweight, and it has enough suction to pick up small children and pets!It cost a little more than the Black & Decker Dustbuster, and outperforms it completely. And if you can't rely on your hand vaccuum, then the price is irrelevant.

1-0 out of 5 stars It's *NOT* The Batteries...
I too owned this particular model, and by pure chance, so did my neighbour.Mine stopped working after 6 months, in which I followed the directions and kept the unit clean. My neighbour's stopped working after 8 months.Instead of throwing them away, (there were no service centres nearby, and B&D's shipping charges were insane) I took my tester out to see where the trouble might lie.Much to my surprise, there was no power reaching the charging base of the Dustbuster, so I immediately focused my attention on the charging unit.I separated the wires from the charging base and put the tester to work. Sure enough, there was no power coming out of the charger! The verdict? It wasn't the BATTERIES after all, it was a defective charger.(just like the other reviewer said).

I did some more research on this, and found that there were several Dustbusters made (maybe hundreds?) that seem to have had faulty chargers. Why B&D never issued a national recall remains a mystery, but it makes perfect sense that maybe they didn't know about this issue? If they did, then they looked the other way, hoping that the problem wasn't too widespread. I remember the salesman at Sears saying that quite a few of these models came back for the exact same reason. (Dustbusters in Canada have a 2yr warranty) I think there was a quality control issue at their plant in China, and interestingly enough, the newer Dustbusters have a different charger on them.We shall see if this problem has been resolved, as I've just purchased another one (model CHV9600-see my review) and will take note of how long that one lasts me.My first Dustbuster purchased in 1990 lasted 8 years, and all models after that have given me trouble! ... You need power, but you don’t want to hoist a ton. Here’s the answer. DeWalt’s revamped 18-volt compact drill/driver delivers on both counts, with a 1/2-inch chuck that grips beefy bits, an 18-position adjustable clutch, and a high-performance motor for the torque you need, packaged in a truly lightweight, comfortable drill. The variable speed has a high and low range for any application, and the reverse switch is right above the curved trigger for easy access. The included charger juices up a spent battery in an hour. We especially like the light weight, even more so because it doesn’t cost in the power department. Lots of pluses: on-board bit storage, two batteries, hard case. We think contractors will be pleased with this drill, especially after a long day.--Kris Jensen-Van Heste ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Check you drill for runout
Having done some research, I decided to get this drill - despite the fact that many have experienced chuck wobble or runout with some of these. When I got the drill home and put a bit in it, I was quickly disappointed. The wobble was very very noticeable while running the drill slowly. This is *unacceptable* for a $200 drill.I am done with dewalt - I don't understand why they let these drills out the door.I am returning the drill and getting the Makita comparable.

4-0 out of 5 stars Stagnant battery problems?
I'm not sure that my Dewalt drill is the same as this one, however it is an 18v powered drill.I bought it probably 3-1/2 or 4 years ago, and since then I've put approximately 20 or 30 hours of use on it, and when I pulled it out 2 weeks ago, dusted it off, and charged the battery, it ran at about half the speed and power it should have for about 1/8 of the time it should have, or had in the past.Is this due to the lack of use? I know I don't quick charge because of the memory it causes, and I don't store the batteries on a concrete floor or on the ground (I'm not sure if the claims that this kills batteries have any creditibility at all), but the battery charges in about 10 munites, and will run about 30 #6 1-5/8" screws in before in starts to wind down rapidly. Is this due to under use of the batteries? I would appreciate any feedback by E-mail.

    5-0 out of 5 stars wouldn't change a thing
I have had Dewalt's 9.6v drill for several years and it has held up well.I used it to put up drywall in several rooms and it worked flawlessly and its light weight was much appreciated. However, for driving longer screws or bigger bits, it lacked the necessary torque. For these jobs, I would get out the corded drill, but this is a hassle especially outside. The 18v Dewalt is a perfect solution with all the necessary torque.I was surprised that it is not much bigger or heavier than the 9.6 v drill with most of the additional weight/bulk in the battery.Battery life is not an issue either since it comes with two batteries and one will charge faster than the other can be drained. However, the convenience and power of the 18v drill comes at a cost.I bought mine reconditioned for about a 35 percent savings and it looked brand new and worked perfectly. But even at the discounted price it is still twice as much as my Dewalt corded drill. So if budget is a concern, stick with a corded drill. It is still the most versatile tool despite its inconvenience. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Not perfect, but better than most
Petzl's Tikka series lamps are hard to beat for function, price, and practicality.Sure, there are lighter weight LED-type lights out there that use watch batteries, but standard AAA batteries are much easier to come by when you're camping/trekking in out of the way places than a specific type of watch battery. The burn time is phenomenal, compared to conventional incandescent lamps, and the Zipka lamp is a very ingenious little headlamp, with its retracting strap and tiny size. They both put out a good field of usable light, and it stays bright for most of the battery life (usually 100-150 hours). As for the criticism that the Tikka line does not have a multiple intensity or flashing setting, or an adjustable angle, Petzl has introduced "Tikka Plus" and "Zipka Plus" lines which offer all of those features, though at a slightly higher price, with slightly more weight and a little bit shorter burn times. They've improved the switch too, for the plus models to allow for the multiple function settings, eliminating the original less-than-perfect slide switch, and the possibility of the lamp turning itself on by mistake.I own several lights in this series, the Tikka, the Zipka, and recently, a Zipka Plus, and I use them constantly whether bicycling, reading in my tent, hiking down a trail at night, or running tv cable in my crawlspace and have nothing but praise for each light.

    5-0 out of 5 stars great/useful light
I recently bought this light and it has been a very pleasant experience. I use it for reading late at nite and for working/fixing things around the house (it is 20 times easier to get light in the place you want it with this rather than with your wife trying to point the light at what you need it pointed at).Overall a good product.

4-0 out of 5 stars Junky switch + Great light = One Heck of a Problem
It's true (as many before me have said) that the switch is pure hell.Flickering everytime I turn it on.Sometimes the light seems very dim until I mess with the switch and realize it's just not 'contacting' well.

Imagine combining the power of a pneumatic brad nailer with the convenience of a battery-powered unit. The Porter-Cable BN200V12 cordless 18-gauge brad nailer kit offers just that kind of choice. Connect it to an external air compressor, and you have a powerful pneumatic nailer. Or attach the 12-volt battery and let the onboard compressor do the job. Either way, you'll get a reliable brad nailer capable of firing standard 3/4- to 2-inch, 18-gauge brad nails into virtually any wood surface cleanly and accurately. Versatility like this is obviously a huge boon to remodelers who'd like to get in and out of a job without having to haul out a compressor and dirty hoses. (As you would expect, the onboard compressor makes this nailer heavier and somewhat less maneuverable than standard models.) Tool-free depth adjustments are quick and precise. A quick-release nosepiece allows for fast jam clearing, and a removable rubber nose cushion prevents marring on finished surfaces. Built-in auto shutoff, automatic pressure release, and self-diagnostic features provide added convenience. --Carl Thress ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars I wish this one would work!
I purchased 2 of these units approx 10 mos ago and really enjoyed using them for the 1st 4 mos. It is a neat idea and saves alot of effort not having to haul a compressor and hose with you on small jobs. However, I began having problems with these units. Both units stopped building air pressure from the built in compressor and then one of them would not fire even when coneccted to external air (a neat option). Both units have now been back to Porter Cable twice to be repaired and one of them keeps coming back from Porter Cable cleaned up and said to be repaired but is non functional. I really like these units and wish Porter Cable could fix the problem but perhaps it's a poor mechanical design.
Note: I primarily use these units to install shoe molding on small jobs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Deserves an award for design!
This tool is made in Taiwan, as the other Porter cordless tools are, not in USA which is stated in the Amazon info.

This nailer fired right up & worked flawlessly, and feels lighter than it looks. It is balanced quite nicely, and if you are looking to not have to set up the ole compressor or drag a hose around this tool is great.I also bought the Porter 12V cordless drill instead of another battery, since the drill comes with 2 batteries (that's $110 in batteries included with the $139 drill!) so I now have an extra battery for either tool.

Nice product. Is a shame Porter can't make these in USA too.If Makita can do it why can't Porter & DeWalt?

5-0 out of 5 stars So convenient not having to worry about a huge compressor
This is probably one of the best things to become cordless since the drill. The innovation of the cordless drill makes it now almost unacceptable to have a corded model unless it's for powering through concrete or other hard material. The innovation of this cordless nailer means no electric cord, no stinky power cells, and best of all, no need to worry about a heavy compressor and pneumatic cords.

For me, this is super helpful for finish work on trim and molding around the house and building cabinets.Having to drag the compressor out of the storage closet was why I still used finish nails with regularity...but no more.I should have gotten this earlier along into my home renovations.Yes, it's a bit heavy but it's okay given that I have both battery and external compressor options.Yes, it can shoot only about 200-300 nails, but it's okay given that I don't come close to that amount and the charger is really quick. Most of my time is spent cutting or positioning wood to fit and I doubt I'd ever have everything cut and ready so all I do is nail all day.I've had this nailer for about a month and haven't had any problems at all.

I love this tool.Happy Father's Day to me! ... Read more

Light, portable, versatile, and powerful, DeWalt's new little vac is a great invention. We love that it's powered by a 12- to 18-volt battery, allowing for use when the power's off or you're too far from an outlet, and that you can also plug it in for continuous use. If you're a DeWalt fan, it's likely you already have the 12- to 18-volt batteries and the charger, so the fact that this is sold without those won't affect you. But that's a change we'd like to see DeWalt make. Other than that, it couldn't be better. The five-foot hose is flexible, and the cleaning tools fit on board. The suction's impressive, whether on AC or DC power. Unlike other wet-dry vacs, you don't have to change out the filter innards when switching from wet to dry, and we just love that. Just rinse it off to clean it. Its high-efficiency filter is listed at trapping 99.7 percent of dust, and in our book, less dust in the air is a good thing. When you're wet-vacuuming, just empty the tank through the drain port. It's light as a feather, super-portable, and plenty powerful.--Kris Jensen-Van Heste ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars There's no end to its usefulness...
Though I have an excellent Fein shop vacuum, I get tired of dragging it all over the house for what amounts to light clean-up jobs.I decided to leave my Fein in the workshop and give this vac a try as my "portable" unit.I am extremely pleased with this decision!I have found that this vacuum operates equally well when plugged into the wall or when it is running off of my 14.4v battery pack.I was worried that suction would diminish if I used the battery option, but it does truly seem to have the same suction power with both power sources. As for the suction, it is of course not as strong as a quality, full sized shop vac - but for what it is intended, it does a great job.Remember, what you lose in suction you gain in mobility.I have had no problem sucking up sawdust, drywall dust, dirt, dead bugs, etc.Honestly, the longer I have this thing the more uses I come up with for it.By disconnecting the hose and attaching it to the exhaust side of the vacuum, you have a small blower.Though I wouldn't say it is powerful in this capacity, I am able to blow all of the grass clippings off of my patio after mowing the yard (in cordless mode of course). All in all, this is a very useful and well designed tool that I highly recommend.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great mini vac
Handy little vac for impromptu small pick-up chores. I keep it in a cubby near the kitchen for quick crumb and dust pickup, and nailing those pesky red beetles that accumulate in the ceiling corners. The wand, brush, etc from my Hoover up-right all seem to fit well on the DC500 hose. I bought an extra filter but it was a waste of $$, as the filter cleans easily with a tap, or blow it off with compressed air. Best tool I ever have had for drawers, closet corners, cabinets, all those little clean up chores that wipeing and dusting don't do the job. Also handy for electronic equipment. Consider it as a Dust Buster on steroids. ShopVac it aint!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must-Have for your DeWalt cordless tool collection
I have one of these units at work.It gets used on a daily basis cleaning computer shelves, cabinets, and keyboards.Let me state that it is perfect for that type of application. It holds more debris than your typical cordless handheld vacuum. The suction power is also more powerful. This unit has dual power source capability.Meaning, you can use the attached power cord to run it off of AC power, or you can insert a DeWalt power tool battery to run it as a cordless vacuum cleaner.

This unit would be a very nice addition to your DeWalt cordless tool collection. It is a perfect tool for light clean up jobs around your home or work place. However, like the previous reviews have stated, "this is not a replacement for your heavy duty shop vacuum".The motor is simply too small for heavy duty work.Anyway, that is not its intended purpose.Removing water out of a flooded bathroom is probably too much to ask from this vaccum. However, it will do nicely for cleaning your car's carpet and upholstery.

This vacuum uses the same battery as the DeWalt heavy duty cordless drills. It will use a 12, 14.4, or 18 volt.Naturally, the bigger the battery, the more run time you can expect. At work, I have access to an unlimited number of 18 volt XRP batteries. Our maintenance shop has dozens of them constantly charging at any given time.I do not have to worry about running out of battery power.I can expect at least 15 minutes of continuous usage out of an 18 volt XRP battery. That is more than plenty for my light usage. The ability to use AC power is always there. That is the advantage of the dual power source capability. The one feature that is lacking in this area is that the unit does not recharge the attached battery even when the power cord is plugged. To recharge the battery, you must use a DeWalt charger.

Batteries and chargers are not included. This vacuum would be more beneficial to those who already own a set of DeWalt batteries and a battery charger.DeWalt batteries are expensive. But, if you already own a DeWalt drill, then it would be relatively inexpensive to add this drill to your collection.

I highly recommend this DeWalt cordless vacuum cleaner. It is another brilliant and innovative product from the folks at DeWalt. At this time, I know of no other similar product. ... Read more

    5-0 out of 5 stars A great long-term investment.
I write this review from the perspective of an aggressive hobbyist. My first power tool purchase was a DeWalt compact 12 volt drill/driver.My primary use for this tool was fixing small things in the nightclub at which I worked during my college years. As my skills gradually increased I began to take on more demanding tasks. It was clear to me that I needed some other tools and a little more power also.Frankly I didn't do much market research as I was satisfied with my DeWalt drill.Having said that, I will not compare this tool set with others on the market.

The price tag for the combo had me second guessing myself so I asked a contractor if I actually needed a $500 tool set.He advised me that I had to make my decision based on my projected frequency and intensity of usage.According to him, the cheaper tools often have weaker motor housings. In other words, the tool will break if it is pushed too hard and will, generally, have a much shorter life span. Not to mention diminished accuracy and power.

So if your usage is going to be: (1) Light and infrequent, consider an alternative to this combo.(2) Heavy and/or frequent, purchase a high-performance combo.

A word of caution, err on the side of purchasing the high-performance combo if you are not sure if your usage over time will increase.

After two years my combo still functions flawlessly.

Hammerdrill/drill/driver: This tool does what it states. It is nice having a light duty drill/driver as the 18-volt version can get heavy after a couple hours of work. For light duty work, a compact 12-volt drill/driver is ideal.Even in general, having two drill/drivers with you can save you a lot of time as you can place two different accessories in each drill.i.e. a drill bit in one and a screw tip in another. As a note, the hammerdrill feature works well, but within reason. This tool is not primarily designed for such use.
I have used this combination of drill/drivers to complete these two major tasks:
Extend a deck.Including anchoring posts into concrete footings and attaching ledgerboard into concrete.
Complete a rough framed room.As helpful info, there is a cheap depth setting drywall bit DeWalt makes that's a great time saver for setting screws in drywall.

Reciprocation Saw:There are a million uses for this saw, just pop in the appropriate blade and cut away. The only major drawback is that the saw vibrates a lot as it is relatively light weight. This makes clean plunge cuts difficult and while recip saws are made for rough cutting, it is a little more difficult to cut a straight line compared to some other recip's I have seen.Do not let me discourage you, I could list a hundred positives, but that would encompass more space than allowed.

As I truly enjoy the functionality of this saw, I purchased the 24-volt version. The 24-volt is a monster tool, but in retrospect my decision was not a good one.I already had a cordless recip; I did not need another one.I would have been better suited with a top of the line Milwaukee corded sawzall. This saw is a powerhouse, half the cost of my 24-volt DeWalt as it is corded, and an industry leader. If you ever need a more powerful recip saw, this would be my recommendation.

A final note. All of the tools in this package have been upgraded. The new 18-volt recip is a little heaver and has a 1 inch stroke (mine has ¾ inch). This may have corrected the flaw mentioned earlier.

Circular saw: This is a very functional saw.It cuts very well and comes with a rip cutting extension.I have only one complaint: The base is flimsy. It works, but a stronger base would have been a benefit.

After using this saw for 2 years, I decided it was time for me to move on to a more powerful saw.I was debating the DeWalt lightweight, high-strength base model with the DeWalt 364K which is the heavy duty version (and very heavy).I paid the extra $20 for the heavy duty model based on the reasoning that I already have a good light weight circular saw (my 18-volt).Also I may, in the future need powerful cutting power for lvl, concrete, brick, etc... Not to mention running my 18-volt through a lot of pressure treated wood is an abuse in my eyes. The 18-volt will take it, but that really is the place of a corded saw.I would recommend the DW364K if you need corded power to add to your tool set. However, I did not do any market research on corded circular saws so it may be worth your while to research some other brands for a corded circular saw (consider Skil and Bosche).

In the upgraded version of the 18-volt circular saw now available, the base plate is solid. This resolves my major drawback.

Also, buy a 24 tooth carbide blade, the 16 tooth blade included is a very rough cutting blade.

Flashlight:Works well, nice to be able to hang it on things.

For sustained work involving two or more of your tools you really need a third battery and a second charger.I would suggest purchasing another 18-volt tool you need as the cost of an extra battery and charger is significant.Do not buy the 18-volt jigsaw. It is my only DeWalt tool I am not satisfied with. The bevel lock comes loose while cutting every now and then; ruining the piece you are working on.If you need a jigsaw, purchase a Bosche; they apparently make the best jigsaws.

I sincerely hope this review helps.

5-0 out of 5 stars Greatest Tools In The Worls
Theses four tools are the greatest, The drill is the best you can buy, strong enough to drill through anything. The reciprocating saw is wonderful for anything, even a quick prune of a low tree branch. The Circular Saw comes with the framing blade, cuts quick and the blade doesnt dull if you hit a nail or two, and the light is great for when you need an extra hand to hold a light, just adjust it and set on a flat surface and you have light to work by.I have had these tools for a few months now. I even try to find an excuse to use them.

1-0 out of 5 stars Made in Mexico
A word of warning before you spend your hard earned money on DeWalt tools.Black and Decker (they actually make DeWalt) recently moved the manufacturing of DeWalt tools from Easton, Maryland to Mexico. Most of the DeWalt tools being sold now were either manufactured in Easton after layoffs were announced or were made in the new Mexico facility. The facility has been riddled with problems from day one and may never produce the same quality tools as the Easton plant.Yes, every tool maker now manufactures outside the US, but DeWalt admittedly priced their tools higher because they could stamp "Made in America" on them. Now all they have is higher prices, a bright yellow case stamped "Made in Mexico".I am not telling anyone not to buy DeWalt, just sharing the truth. ... We can't think of anything we'd want to add to this little hummer. It's incredible what B&D has engineered into this system (we don't think it's fair to call it a "screwdriver"). The 5-foot tape measure fits on board, or you can remove it for separate use. Dual speed range lets you drill holes at high speed and drive screws at the slower speed. A 23-position clutch, just like what's on the big boys, will keep you from stripping your screws. But get this: Unlike conventional cordless screwdrivers and regular power drills, this tool's handle easily locks in three positions for tight areas and awkward spots. Genius! And just like the "real" drills, this one's got an accessible forward/reverse rocker switch for backing screws out, too. Here's something, though, that the big-boy drill makers should pick up: It's got on integrated light so you can always see your work surface clearly. For the money, we haven't seen anything like it. --Kris Jensen-Van Heste ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Form plus function: Works as good as it looks
The benefits of cordless power tools are obvious, but who says you need to pay hundreds of dollars to get the job done if you live in an apartment and don't have a contractor's license?

For $25, this is a super addition to any toolbox -- or kitchen cabinet. This is a great gift idea for dad -- or mom, for that matter.

    Here's why:

    * Quick-release collar allows you to pop in a screw or drill bit in a flash. A nice, tight grip.
    * Multiple forward or reverse speeds at the click of a button. Torque control on the collar is easy to adjust and visual icons make it easy to figure out which one is best depending on whether you're using a screw or drill bit. Sweet.
    * From 3-6 hours of operation on a single charge. Because it can take about six hours to re-charge, it's a good idea to leave this plugged into an outlet in the kitchen, bathroom or garage (but not longer than 3-4 weeks without use to avoid reduction in battery life).
    * Ability to pivot the position of the handle or angle is big plus and great way to avoid carpel tunnel pain.
    * The LED light, built-in removable tape measure and bit holder on the handle are fluff, but add to the coolness factor.
    * Surprisingly light weight for it's rather large size.

So far no complaints. Price, form and function add up to a solid 5-star rating. You simply can't go wrong here.

Great for light framing--remodeling, especially--this Impulse cordless framing nailer from Paslode lets you avoid the hassle of compressor hoses and compressor noise. The nailer's small, 12-inch-long, lightweight body (6.9 pounds) is easy to hold and, because you're not dragging a hose, doesn't cause as much arm fatigue as other nailers. The nailer drives 2- to 3-1/4-inch nails and has easy-to-adjust drive depth and a high-visibility load magazine. This Paslode nailer uses a patented system that requires both a fuel cell and an included rechargeable battery. Overall, we were impressed with the nailer's performance--it's consistent and there's adequate power for most uses. This model shoots up to 1,200 nails on a single fuel cell and up to 4,000 nails on a full battery charge. There's a convenient belt hanger so you don't have to lay the nailer on the ground or on top of a ladder or wedge it among rafters, and the high-visibility orange makes it difficult to misplace. The kit includes a plastic carrying case, a lightweight charger, and safety goggles. Please note that the nailer does not come with the fuel cell included. --Jonathon Tudor ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Faming Nailer
I bought this nail gun to finish a few rooms in my basement. The Paslode Framing Nailer worked flawlessly. It nailed pressure treated 2x4s perfectly.I didn't have a single problem with it.

The only thing I didn't like was the exhaust that the gun produces.Since it works off of an actual explosion, it gives off an exhasut that can be a little overwhelming if your not working outside or have the windows open.

5-0 out of 5 stars CUT YOUR UMBILICAL AIRHOSE PEOPLE!
Will someone please tell me what "light framing" is? The nature of the work itselfdoes not change whether one wants to use a 16 oz. hammer to put together a house or a framing gun.So I'm not quite sure what those reviewers mean when they say this gun is for "light framing". It shoots nails into wood! Does it's being cordless somehow translate into some kind of limitation? As long as this nailer is working like it ought to, I don't see any reason why one would hesitate to use it in any situation one night find onself in when framing a house. For reviewers to categorize this liberating tool as a novelty is misleading to those who might benefit from it's use. Cordless is the future, get used to it.

5-0 out of 5 stars "wireless" is better
I once had an ex army ranger turned framer tell me that he would rather jump out of a airplane with an air hose than a parachute, because the hose will surely get hung on something , somewhere on the way down.while this is a little far fetched, using the impulse gun eliminates the "hung up air hose".it is great for light framing and punch list work. i strongly recommend this gun for people in the remodel/repair industry as well as the do-it-yourselfer. ... This is an innovative tool whose time has most definitely come, making it possible for do-it-yourselfers to have all the power of an air nailer without buying a compressor, fooling with hoses, or putting up with the noise. And unlike other airless nailers, this one requires no fuel cells, and the battery is rechargeable just like those found in other cordless tools. Senco's AirFree brad nailer does the job, maybe with slightly less speed, but the convenience may be more than worth it. There's a slight delay when you press the trigger as the tool revs up, but you'll grow accustomed to the rhythm. It's powered by a 12-volt battery, never needs oil, and features an electronic depth-of-drive adjustment. Senco packs two batteries and a charger along with the nailer in a tough carrying case. You'll fire 600 to 1,000 nails on a charge, and a recharge takes anywhere from 60 to 90 minutes. Low vibration and a comfortable grip make this a heck of a tool. We really, really like this. --Kris Jensen-Van Heste ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars HOW COULD THIS HAPPEN?
This tool manufactured by Senco is not good quilty and definitly not for professional applications. We have purchased a lot of senco pnumatic products in the past with very good results. This tool had poor results right away in dense woods. After some use the results where sparatic: 1) intrermitent falure to fire, 2) Unpredictable depth in the same piece of material & Jambing often. Both of our Senco AF25 Air free's currently sit out of service.
We have since Purchased sevral Dewalt 18V nailers ( Dewalt has 18V Vs 12V for the Senco ) the Dewalt also has a production seting that allows rapid fire like an air nailer; the Senco on the other hand does not have this feature.
I'm sorry to say, I reccamend a pass on this Senco product.

    1-0 out of 5 stars too bad . . .
When this tool works, it's great.Unfortunately, it's not reliable.I sent it back when the gun quit driving nails--revving up, then dying down--and the Senco dealer place fixed it and sent it back. It worked great . . . until today. Now it won't do anything.I called Senco, and they said it needs repair--the clutch is stuck, and they said that if hitting the thing with a hammer a few times won't free it up, it needs to be repaired.I called the closest repair place and the guy, who sounded tired, told me I could put mine in line with the other 6 he has waiting for backordered parts for repair.Since I need the thing to work when I need it to (I've had it for about a year, and use it for building cabinets) instead of when it feels like working, I guess I'll have to buy a compressor.

1-0 out of 5 stars Did not work out of the box!
I was looking forward to use it and when it finally arrived, it did not work at all with both batteries fully charged. The quality of workmanship was so so compare to other brands. I was really upset and decided to go with the Paslode 18Ga cordless nailer. I own the Paslode framing nailer and it worked great. So what if it needs fuel cells. At least it worked fawlessly.

Bottom line - don't get this gun. ... Read more

Solid performance and serious convenience--that more or lesssums up DeWalt's cordless combo kit. With two XRP extended run-timebatteries and a one-hour fast charger, you've got the foundation forhigh-performance, long-lasting equipment, and DeWalt doesn't stopthere. The heavy-duty, 18-volt, 1/2-inch drill/driver/hammer drill willdo up to 2,000 rpm and 34,000 beats per minute, and can produce 450inch-pounds of maximum sustained torque. The carbide-tipped chuck jawshave excellent bit grip. There's also an automatic spindle lock, aswell as an antislip comfort grip. We were especially impressed with thebalance of this hammer drill--its T-handle design distributes weightevenly so it's easy to hold, even over long periods of time, and thegrips seem to work for people of all different hand sizes. Theheavy-duty, 18-volt reciprocating saw offers a keyless blade clamp for quickblade changes, a pivoting shoe with an open top for maximum visibility, and a variable-speed trigger for blade control. The saw also has anelectric brake. It's an accurate tool, and the grips--especially thefront one--provide excellent user control. This reciprocating saw makesup to 2,800 spm, and has a 7/8-inch stroke length. It weighs only 6.5pounds, and because it's cordless, there simply isn't a better optionfor working in tight spaces or above your head. The kit also includes atough plastic case that will hold both tools and the charger.--Jonathon Tudor ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars High quality and heavy duty
Nice functionality on drill and hammer function.
Lots of torque and battery life is remarkable.
I am right-handed and have large hands which means that I have to use care to fully depress "forward" button when changing from "reverse" to "forward" (it is a little awkwardly positioned). I did have difficulty engaging the hammer function one time, which sorted itself out after switching from "forward" to "reverse" and back again...

The saw is a dream with regards to weight, balance and power.
It does however, as everyone says, use up the batteries quite quickly (more than 4 long diagonal cuts of a 2x10 will kill a battery). But remember, it isn't expected to compete with a normal AC power tool...

I would recommend that Dewalt sell this kit with one of the normal heavy duty 18V batteries and one of the extra heavy duty batteries to make the kit even better.

4-0 out of 5 stars Heavy Power
This is an excellent combo with more power than most people will need for the job.The drill is the heart of the deal with the drill alone retailing for only $100 less than this kit.It has 450 inch-pounds of torque, which is enough to ripe the head off an unsuspecting dry-wall screw (this is great! nice power). The chuck and grip are well designed. If these tools have a draw back it would be the price (a bit on the high side) and weight (there are not light...which feels good, but what about the end of the day?), but ultimately these tools are comfortable, powerful, and really loveable. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Stop what you are doing and buy this tool
If you're like me, and have been using a cordless drill to drive screws and lag bolts for construction purposes for years, put them away and buy this tool immediately! Here's the deal:

    1) These makita impact drivers (12 volts) have twice the torque of your favorite (14-, 18- or 24-) volt cordless drill)

    2) When you're driving a long screw into Southern Yellow Pine, decking, or construction lumber, you know that as much as the fastener is resisting turning into the lumber, that much reactive torque again is coming out the end of you're drills handle, forcing you to brace yourself, push with all your might, get worn out, etc.

I bought this tool a few months ago on the advice of a friend.A bad car accident some time ago relieved me of much of my former upper body strength, and I just could not apply the force required to drive 2-1/2" + construction screws or lags with cordless drills.Because the makita uses an impact mechanism to drive the fasteners, it sends zero reactive torque back to the user.none.zero.zilch.You can drive 6" timber screws through SYP or engineered lumber with this thing, even over your head or while leaning on a ladder, and they go right in, no fooling. You'll need to apply about as much pressure to the gun as you'd use to hold a can of beer. It's that powerful.

    Three words:buy this tool!

    Addressing some complaints:
    A) It's loud.Yeah, so are circular saws, hammer drills, table saws, routers, vaccum cleaners, lawnmowers, planers, etc.See the connection? All these things can be found on CONSTRUCTION SITES.Construction Sites are NOISY PLACES.Don't use this tool (or any of the above) in the nursery while the baby is sleeping...

    B) It's too powerful.Don't do fine detail work with this, like securing cabinet hardware or tightening electrical screws.Since you don't feel reactive torque, you don't know how badly you're stripping the screws and holes. That stuff is why we all still have screwdrivers in our toolboxes.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great tool
Well, I had this tool for almost two years now and I am quite satisfied with it.It squeezes into tight places and is very light weight with plenty of torque. The only complaint I have is that the battery seemed to die a little quickly.I abused this tool a little (the trigger cover broke off, the variable speed no longer works and I dropped it too many times to keep count of), but it keeps working.I plan to get a 14.4 volt model next for a little more torque and battery longevity. I'm giving it 4 stars instead of 5 because of the batter issue.

5-0 out of 5 stars Powerful quality
As a professional cabinetmaker/fabricator I have all manner of power tools (a half dozen routers, six drills, grinders, various saws, etc.), but this is far and away my favorite of the lot. Sure, comparing a router to a drill is silly, but some tools make you feel good while you're using them and others just don't get you very excited. Somewhere in that recipe for power tool bliss is a combination of quality, effectiveness, ergonomics, and several other mystery ingredients. This tool has them all.

With an all-metal gear housing, fine bearing and gear innards, and a sturdy plastic body, this tool just feels like quality. It purrs when you run it. It is light and compact, and for those of us who have gotten over the need for flashy macho power tools and have instead prioritized effective function over fashionable mega-volts sure appreciate a tool that gets the job done and doesn't give us tendonitis after a couple hours. You pros who use your tools all day know what I'm talking about. The compact size is great for cabinetmaking and working in smaller spaces.

This machine is plenty powerful. Makita and all of the other guys make 14.4V, 18V, and even 24V (paleeeze!) impact drivers, but I can't imagine how they would be necessary for 98% of the users out there. The guys at work won't snap towels at you in the locker room if you show up with this tool, even though it is only 12V. Once they see it in action they'll want one too! You can drive all day with this baby and the batteries last for an amazingly long time. I use mine mainly for driving screws into wood, but I've also used it for driving lag screws and other heavier applications. No problem.

There is one thing, however, that every potential buyer should know. This tool is not a direct substitute for a regular drill, even with the excellent optional drill chuck available from Makita. This tool drives fasteners into materials about as effectively as possible, but it is a mediocre drill. It will do in a pinch (I've even run taps with it), but it is more of a secondary tool than a primary drill. Use it in conjunction with your favorite power drill for best results. Building a deck and driving 1,000 deck screws? Buy this tool. Drilling a bunch of holes in metal, wood, or any other material? Get out your drill.

That being said, I love this tool. I've gotten more use and satisfaction out of it than any tool in my arsenal and I can't say enough good things about it. Buy and be happy! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Makita Cordless Impact Driver Kit BTD200SH
This tool is a handyman's dream.I'm not sure whether this $549 price is for the impact wrench or the impact driver. The picture on this page is for the impact wrench, but the part number is for the impact driver (BTD200SH).The wrench version should have model number BTW200SH.I'd call up Amazon to confirm before ordering.I know for a fact Amazon is selling BTD200SH for $399.Do a search for BTD200SH on Amazon and you will see two entries:one 399, the other for 549.The price for the impact driver has tumbled everywhere else but Amazon, because Makita is reportedly phasing out this tool for reasons I don't know (hefty price?, hefty weight?, hefty size?).The price for the impact wrench version BTW200SH has not changed. An impact driver has a quick change 1/4" hex chuck, whereas an impact wrench has a square socket drive head. Only the impact driver has been discontinued. The identically built impact wrench version is still being manufactured and not discounted.

First a caveat: I am only a homeowner and not a contractor. I use my tools to fix my own home and a couple of my mother's rental properties. My views are from a novice user's/handyman's vantage point.

I bought this tool after a contractor, whom I hired for a major repair job, touted to me the benefits of impact drivers when used to drive long wood screws. The benefits are: no hand strain, dramatically reduced chances of stripping the screw heads, being able to drive screws that your regular drill/driver would not have a prayer's chance of driving in the first place.

How does an impact driver do all that? An impact driver works by combining rotational action (as on a regular drill) with a strong hammering action in the rotational direction. The hammering action doesn't kick in until the rotational resistance reaches a certain point. Here is an analogy to help you understand the impact action: if you've ever changed tires with a factory original one sided nut wrench, you'd pull the lever as hard as possible in order to loosen a nut. Sometimes the nut may be so tight that it may be stuck and the wrench won't move. What do you do? You reposition the lever of the wrench and you step hard on the lever a couple of times until the nut is suddenly loose. The stepping action is almost identical to the impact torque action of the impact driver.

The Makita BTD200SH has 1774 in-lbs. of maximum torque (or equivalently 149 ft-lbs, or 200 Newton-meters for the metrically minded). For comparison, most top-notice 18V drill drivers fall in the 475 to 550 in-lbs. maximum torque range. And most other impact drivers on the market range from only 800 in-lbs. to perhaps 1200 in-lbs. This easily makes the Makita BTD200SH the most powerful cordless impact driver by a huge margin, although Milwaukee has an 18V cordless impact wrench with an even higher torque rating (240 ft-lbs), but the Milwaukee is an impact wrench and not an impact driver. Unfortunately for the Makita BTD200SH, along with the most torque in the class title, it claims the most weight in the class title as well. It weighs a comparatively very heavy 6.3 lbs., even though most 18V and 24V drill/drivers easily weigh this much. Most impact drivers, on the other hand, weigh only 4 lbs. or less. Maybe a combination of high price, heavy weight, etc. led to poor sales, which then forced Makita to discontinue the product. The true weight aside, it doesn't feel that heavy in the hand because the T-handle is very well balance.

To use an impact driver, lay the tip of a bit firmly and perpendicularly on a screw head and press the trigger slowly at first. Because impact drivers have a very high rotational speed, it's best to start slow to prevent the tip from jumping out and stripping the screw head. Once the screw starts rotating, you can then increase the RPM. The amazing thing with impact drivers is you don't feel the reaction force. Although the impact driver is torquing the screws at 1774 in-lbs., you don't feel any opposing torque at all. It's simply amazing. Try using a drill/driver even at 500 in-lbs. and your wrist may twist off, but not so with an impact driver. The only thing you'll feel is the very loud noise of the impacting action. It will get loud enough when driving large screws that you will need ear plugs. Besides driving screws, it can also act as a drill, although it can only accept quick change drill bits with a 1/4" hex shank. I've not tried the drilling mode myself but numerous reviews from other users of impact drivers show that it can handily drill up to 3/4" diameter in wood. Larger holes may cause the tool to vibrate excessively because of the impacting action. I have a feeling this impact driver will retire my cordless drill/driver or at least relegate it to true heavy duty drilling tasks only.

    Tool specs:

bare weight with one 1.7 AH battery - 6.3 lbs.
    maximum torque: 1774 in-lbs.
    No load speed: Low 0 - 1,600 RPM; High 0 - 2,000 RPM
    Impacts per minute: Low 0 - 2,500 IPM; High 0 - 3,000 IPM

The tool comes with a hard molded case, a 1-hr. quick charger, a 1.7 AH battery. I've read someone else's review on Amazon that the 1.7 AH battery holds enough charge to drive 1000 to 1200 1/2x12 lags before needing a charge(incredible), so maybe having only 1 battery is not too much of a drawback. I've not used mine often enough to verify the battery charge life. Still I bought a second kit, mostly just to get a second battery, which costs $130 retail anyway, and also to buy a second driver, charger, and hard case almost for a song before all the current closeout stocks are gone.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wails on lag bolts, screws, and the like.
Don't be confused; this is not an impact wrench but an impact driver (different chuck) designed for screws and lag bolts of all types. That being said, the Makita driver is a dream. I use it for installing big 1/2" lag bolts (use a 1/4"- 1/2" socket adapter) into thick pressure treated pilings.I previously used a hammer drill, now those days of jerked wrists and rounded bolt heads are over. This one is smooth. It can easily drive a 40 Torx screw through a railroad tie, almost effortlessly. No more stripped sockets.I can drive any ware from 1000-1200, 1/2 x 12 lags before it needs a charge. It does get a little hot from extended continuous use, but this is only a minor inconvenience. If you need the power to drive and work all day, this is the tool. This tool has been dropped, left in the rain, and worked harder then any tool should be, but it comes back for more every time. The Makita driver seems almost bullet proof. The charger that comes with it is easy to understand. We have the adapter to jam Makita's 12 - 24-volt batteries. It works good on all of them. Way to go Makita! ... Read more

    Editorial Review

Early Adopters Pick: May 2003. The first fully robotic lawnmower that can learn parts of your yard.

The Robomower is convenient, easy, robotic, and clean--and it transforms the world of yard work! Set up (once), turn on, and the Robomower cuts the grass on almost any surface--all by itself. Getting the system set up in your yard can take most of an afternoon, but the well-written manual makes the job easier. The biggest part of the set-up task is stringing the perimeter wire around your yard, marking the boundaries the Robomower will stay within. Once you're set, and the mower is on, the machine simply senses the perimeter wire and uses three mulching blades to cut down everything inside the wire. Thanks to the onboard computer, the Robomower can even learn parts of your yard as it mows, making it quicker next time. The mower is quiet, automatic, and the mulching blades mean that when it's done you don't need to bag or rake.

The Robomower is outfitted with safety features. It won't run at all if it's flipped over with the blades exposed. Likewise, it turns tail and backs off if its soft 360-degree bumpers encounter any foreign object (like a pet or toy or favorite rose bush). A theft deterrent system keeps the unit safe. The Robomower is very quiet compared to other lawn mowers, although because it takes longer to get the job done than a human with a walk-behind mower, what noise there is lasts longer. The mower works best on level yards smaller than 3,200 square feet, with the grass reasonably tame to begin with. It does not work well on hilly or overgrown yards. While it takes a full day to recharge the battery, a full charge is enough to mow most lawns. (The mower is definitely no lightweight, either; it takes two people to remove the machine from the box when it arrives.) The Robomower is definitely a smart idea for folks with physical conditions that make strenuous activities like mowing difficult, but it's also a great product for anyone who feels like there's always something better to do with a weekend afternoon than lawn mowing. Rechargeable power pack comes included.--Brian Trinen ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Robomower clips Houston
I've had my mower since about March 2004 and I've been very pleased with what it has done for the lawn.

    Positives.
    1. It mows the lawn wonderfully and the crossing action cuts and mulches as well as any mower I've seen.
    2. You can stand and watch it or go lay in the pool. (important when it's 95F and 95% humidity here in Houston.)
    3. You get to meet your neighbors and complete strangers who stop to ask how it works.
    4. I've had good response from Friendly Robotics support (I've read some of the notes that weren't so positive, not sure why mine was different)
    5. Payback is about 1 year (40 weeks mowing X $25/wk for lawn services) (although I do have to do my own edging)
    6. It's quiet enough to use anytime day or night.

    Negatives.
    1. The perimeter switch failed 2 times, although I received a new switch within the week each time I called.
    2. I waited a couple months before adjusting the perimeter wire to better cover all the areas of the lawn and the St. Augustine grass had buried the wires and made it hard to move (lesson learned, adjust right after it mows the first or second time)
    3. If the grass is tall and/or wet there can be a traction problem with the mower.Although support did help and say to raise the mower to the highest setting when that happens.

Overall, it's been great and I look forward to using the Robomower for a long time to come.I saw the review from the person with St. Augustine grass and an uneven lawn.Well mine's St. Augustine and the developer certainly didn't go to any pains to smooth the dirt before laying the sod, but I've had no problems with the mower completing it's task.I have 3 zones with trees in the middle of one, a pool and 3 bush/tree areas in another and the Robomower handles them all really well.

What I've learned about the electronics is, if there is a problem where it appears to get 'stuck' I remove the battery for about 15 seconds and then let it restart, that's solved any problem in that area.

I'm almost hoping that I can move so I can sell this Robomower with this house and buy one of the newer models at the new place!

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent product.
Would have given 5 stars but owners manual was missing, called Amazon and was told to call manufactuer. It arrive after a week. No problems with mower. Cuts grass better than the old walk-behind mower did. Set-up was a breeze and perimeter wire was a snap to lay. A bit pricey and accessories/optional items are a fortune. For price paid a rapid charger should have been included. Only concern is service, nearest service center is a couple of hundred miles away.

Would I purchase one again? Probably (Most likely if price was lower). I live in central Florida and during summer months grass requires 2 mowings per week.If I lived in a cooler/drier area price paid would have covered lawn service for a long time.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good, but not perfect
I purchased an 850 about three months ago.My thumbnail review: good labor saving device, if you do not set your expectations too high.

This tool saves me a LOT of work. Not necessarily time, but work.I don't feel comfortable leaving Raoul (our name for our "gardener") running when I go out.It takes him about two hours to cut one of our two zones.(It takes me about an hour to cut the whole thing by hand.)So for those two hours, someone has to be home.At first, we just sat and watched him cut.Now I usually work on something else. But I have to stay home. And he does not cut in an orderly fashion.Raoul just wanders around the yard in a long, cris-crossing fashion. What he does not cut in one pass, he might get in the next.Or maybe the one after that.So if you stop him early, you will have to look for the places he has missed. But I have gotten into the habit of just turning him loose whenever I happen to be at home for the evening.

You will end up with a nice lawn. You will have to edge.It leaves about two or three inches all around (more on that in a minute), but it cuts well and mulches much better than anything else I have used. When the lawn is done, it looks good.

It appears to be pretty safe.In my opinion, you will have to work to lose fingers, or a pet.The bottom of my Robomower is relatively flat, with three bowl shaped indents. The indents are arranged in a triangle, two in front, one in the middle behind. At the bottom (top?) of each indent, about an inch above the bottom of the mower, is a blade. In order to get your finger in the blade, you must reach under the mower about two inches from the side (a good trick while the mower is moving), or about six inches from the front, then stick your finger up inside the indent, without lifting the mower, or bumping a sensor.(If the front wheel comes clear of the ground, the blades appear to stop.)Of course, you will have to make your own evaluation, and I accept no liability, and am just stating a personal opinion...

All of my problems have had to do with the state of my lawn.We just moved into a new house. We have five trees and a lamp post on the property. There are numerous low spots. Two of the trees have a significant surface root system. To be honest, I was impressed with how well Raoul copes with the roots.Usually, he rolls up, the front wheel bounces over the root (stopping the blade for a moment), he mutters to himself for a moment (something about removing the battery before lifting), then he proceeds on.Sometimes, though, he will try to go along the tree root, lifting his rear driving wheels, without lifing his front wheel. In this case, he really does not realize that he is not going anywhere.Sometimes he seems to figure out that he has gone further than is possible, and he reverses out, but sometimes that doesn't work either.I have stopped this for the moment by placing a rock partway up the problem roots. He bumps them and reverses. But I will have to come up with a permanent solution as we landscape.

The other environmental problem is the low spots. In some cases the front wheel will get in a low spot, the blades stop for a moment, and Raoul will drive out of it, but sometimes it seems to stymie him.I am filling in the low spots with a topsoil/grass seed mixture and I think this problem will go away.

Bottom line - Would I do it again?I think so.It took me a while to set him up and learn his foibles, but he is a neat toy and at this point, I just don't worry about cutting the lawn! ... Read more

    Editorial Review

Black & Decker’s VersaPak tools are great for the homeowner, and to keep them running, you’ll want some spare batteries. Some advantages to these include their freedom from "memory," which keeps you from getting a full recharge and the fact that you’ll get at least 300 full recharges on each battery. They’ll power all the 3.6-volt VersaPak tools, including the ScumBuster and screwdrivers. Of course, once you buy a VersaPak tool, you don’t have a choice of batteries, but we’ve found these to be reliable and well able to power the 3.6-volt VersaPak line. The charger has a light that lets you know you’ve inserted the batteries for a charge, and three hours later, they’re ready to go. Our only suggestion: We’d like to see Black & Decker revamp the charger to let us know when the batteries are fully charged. --Kris Jensen-Van Heste ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars BUM BATTERIES
THIS IS A GOOD LITTEL DRIVER.BATTERIES ARE NOT WORTH THE POWDER TO BLOW THEM UP.WHY WOULD B&D TAKE A GOOD IDEA AND SCREW IT UP WITH CHEAP OUTSOURCEDBATTERIES?EVER HEAR OF NICKEL HYDRIDE? I LEFT MINE ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND NO ONE WOULD PICK IT UP.

2-0 out of 5 stars Same problems with batteries and charger
B&D's claims for the batteries are just not true.I have had the same problems with very short battery life and intermittent charger described in other reviews.I have gone through several sets of gold batteries (don't even try the cheaper ones!).

And now, to make matters worse, you can't buy replacements locally anymore (they have been replaced by other tools with different batteries) and have to scour the internet trying to keep my tools working.

I will be replacing my tools very soon, I'm sure. The only reason I give 2 stars instead of one is that the tools do work pretty well when you can get a new battery in them.

1-0 out of 5 stars bad batteries
great idea - lots of different tools all use same rechargeable batteries.BUT these batteries die in <1 year.I have a whole set of tools that use these, but now my choice is: spend $60/yr on batteries, or get a new set of tools that will last longer!Pretty easy decision at this point... considering I already have a great Craftsman drill and there are other tools that use the same batteries.
BE WARNED - if you buy these you will be buying them forever.

2-0 out of 5 stars Heavy Duty I think NOT
The DEWALT right angle drill works well but you need to take good care not to drop it.My DEWALT18V cordless right angle drill broke when I knocked it off my tool box.It was a 14" fall and I guess it just landed the wrong way. When I picked it up, it started rattling.I was thinking "NO WAY".I couldn't believe it.It was a 14" fall.I also have a Bosch 18V hammer drill which my neighbor accidently dropped on a hard concrete floor from the top of an 8 foot ladder. A few scratches but it still worked flawlessly.

5-0 out of 5 stars must have for a carpenter
this little drill is a workhorse. I bored a goood 15-20 1" holes a speedbor before it even got hot & even after that it didnt lose any torque or drain the battery. I wouldnt use it for real large jobs but if you need to drill 30-40 hole that aren't too large it easier to use this than to have to plug in a hole hawg and deal with the weight of one of those things

3-0 out of 5 stars Color yellow- lemon
This tool worked great forabout three months, then while driving a#10 sheet metal screw the trigger froze in the on position, smoke started coming out of the battery pack, the only way to stop it was to disconnect the battery. I'm a cabinetmaker and this is one of the better right angle drills I've owned, it's a bit heavy and the forward and reverse switch is hard to use. The batteries last a long time, I can be on the job all day without charging them, nice. The keyless chuck is one of the best I've used, I hope this is just one of those lemons you get every now and again because I was really begining to like this tool. ...
