Square holes? No problem. Delta's industrial mortiser offers precision with a1/2-horsepower motor behind it. A rack-and-pinion system raises and lowers the head, and the mortising head column swings 180 degrees for off-table work. Clearly a step upfrom Delta's MM300 Shopmaster mortising machine, this one's made with theprofessional user in mind and includes an adjustable dovetail way on the mortising head,a tool and chisel tray, a gas-filled head stabilizer and multiposition feed lever. There'salso a generous 16-3/4-by-13-1/2-inch cast-iron base and 2-15/16-inch tall two-piecefence totaling 13-5/8 inches in length. Bit and chisel changing is easy with the chuckkey/hex wrench. Of course, we always want to use new tools right out of the box, andDelta's made sure you can get started right away with 1/4-, 5/16-, 3/8-, and 1/2-inchchisel and bit sets. 4-0 out of 5 stars Great machine, when it isn't broken!
My machine arrived by FedX, and seemed to be in fine shape.I got it running in less than 30 minutes including cleaning the nice coat of oil from "wood touching surfaces." I got twelve mortises done, when the handle snapped off at the spring pin.I noticed two fine cracks on the outside edge of the spring pin hole when I assembed it, but assumed they were made that way.Looking back now, it appears that the spring pin was driven into the hole, and split the retainer.Well, anyway, on the thirteenth mortise the casting snapped in two places.I got on the phone to Delta, and they assured me that they would send out the piece, as soon as it became available--backorder.It seems they have had a run on this part.
The machine does beautiful work, and it sure beats doing it by hand.A bit of clean-up with a chisel and the mortises will be as perfect as can be.My project will have to wait until the part comes in.At least I won't have to send the whole machine in for repair.

3-0 out of 5 stars Another Broken in Shipping
I know some people think one should rate the machine and not the shipping, but, if over 30% of the people that order this tool receive a broken one do to shipping, I think it is safe to assume that in the total manufacturing process of this tool inclusive of Packaging, this tool is failing the final step. So, I give it a three. This is with the assumption that I would love the tool if it wasn't broke.

At least after reading many of the reviews, the first thing I did was examine the machine well prior to removing it from the box.I noticed the crack before I ever took it out.

If you order this machine, be prepared to receive a broken unit. The price and free freight may be enough to give it a shot.It was for me.Hope the next one is not broke.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great small shop mortiser
I received this through Amazon without any of the shipping problems detailed in other reviews. This was setup and working in less than 30 minutes. The chisels I received with my mortiser seem of decent quality but no doubt I'll upgrade those in the future.Despite other users' reviews, I have not had any problems with the stock hold down.I've noticed that if I push it all the way down and then pull up on the very front lip of the hold down, it comes up to a perfect height so that it still rests on the stock but I'm still able to move it around under the hold down.I've only had the chisel grab the stock and not let go once and that was because I didn't use the hold down (oops).Great mortiser, cuts clean and easily.I do like the fact that the Delta mortiser is virtually all cast iron whereas similar products (Jet, Shop Fox) use the least amount of cast iron they can to get by. ... Editorial Review

If you're like us, you've crammed more tools into your workshop than can really fit. Luckily, an HTC universal mobile base (or two) can make a world of difference. The base is sturdy and easy to assemble, plus--unlike any other mobile base on the market--it adjusts to fit virtually any large woodworking machine, forming squares from 12 by 12 to 36 by 36 inches and rectangles as big as 20 by 52 inches. Holes at 1-inch increments let you choose any shape in between, and wheels at all four corners make it easy to maneuver. Roll one tool in; roll another tool out. Moving equipment around a crowded shop has never been this easy. --Jon Groebner ... Read more

I had purchase this for my JET Table Saw. It works great. It worked so well I purchased another one for my Bansaw. The flexibilty in moving your tools around is a great convienence. I would recommend this product to anyone.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not for Heavy Table Saws
I bought an HTC2000 mobile base to go under a 400 lb. table saw.It couldn't raise the table saw comfortably even though it is rated to handle that much weight.I ended up swapping with the big Shop Fox base that's rated at 600 lbs. from my band saw and put the HTC2000 on the band saw.It handles the 200 lbs. of the band saw just fine. The HTC2000 is a good mobile base, but I wouldn't put over 300 lbs. on it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Does what it's supposed to do
I couldn't pass up a 1HP 4-speed 14" HF bandsaw for a little over $200 on sale. I realized the need for mobility of this tool in my shop and looked for reasonably priced mobile stands. The HTC2000 is rated for much more weight than I needed and would accomodate a larger base of another tool if it didn't work out for the bandsaw.

No problem - just one 14" brace front and back and one 18" each side made the stand fit perfectly. It takes a few minutes to put all the nuts and bolts in but the metal is strong and the wheels roll smoothly. When the base is not elevated for moving, there are rubber feet that keep the base steady. The two swivel casters have one step lever each instead of one center lever for raising. I don't see a problem with using it on a closed base bandsaw; the low mounted motor weight is more than the higher weight. I think the base is made well and does what it is supposed to do. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars defective product and poor customer service
The first drill press that I received from Grizzly was defective: the adjustment lever for the belts was stuck and the drill made terrible noises when turned on. Grizzly was very slow in responding to my many inquiries (with no 1-800 number for customer service)and, after repackaging and returning the defective drill press and more than a month from my initial order, I received another drill press. Upon opening the box, however, I found a dent on the housing surrounding the belts. What a mess! If I knew then what I know now, I would never have ordered this drill press. Think twice before ordering this item.
    Buy something local.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Price Performance
I finally bit the bullet and bought this drill press on 12/31/04 just right before grizzly increased the price on it.Well, I finally got it all assembled (not difficult at all, only one person can do it) and it works great.Like one other reviewer mentioned, it is a little rough around the edges but it does run very smooth.Overall, I'm very happy with this purchased. All that is needed is to make an aux table. Oh, and I wish griz would include the light bulb so I wont have to run out for one, but no big deal.last thing, i didn't get a drill press vice that others were mentioning about.i guess this is not included anymore??? oh well...

5-0 out of 5 stars Power to spare
A very smooth and powerful drill press that found many other uses in my shop.It takes everything I throw at it and keeps on humming along.I am not crazy about the use of belts for speed changes but it is a necessary evil and a small price to pay.The machine is heavy but can be moved and setup by one person. ... Serious craftspeople looking for a dedicated shop machine should consider the Powermatic hollow chisel mortiser. This tool features heavy-duty cast-iron construction, and its 1-horsepower motor turns 1,725 rpm, supplying plenty of power--we made 1/2-inch cuts in a few choice hardwoods with no problem at all. The sliding table rides smooth and sure with depth and length stops and front-mounted hand wheels for linear and cross adjustments. Rack-and-pinion gearing raises and lowers the entire motor head and feeds the mortiser solidly into work. We like the removable, see-through plates for easy access to the chuck and find the lock knob for securing the chisel convenient. --Tim Block ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I thought the Delta 14-651 Mortiser would do the job...oops!
Think of the engineering behind the task. You are taking a square chisel, and not slamming it into some wood with a mallet, but rather taking a long slow plunge. Plunging hardwoods like oak, cherry, maple etc. makes you think it is actually a near impossible task. It is helped because the bit in the center is drilling the core, making it easier for the chisel to scrape the walls down. This process is really a challenge for a drill press with a mortising attachment. Some say it could eventually waste a drill presses bearings. Ok so I stepped up to the plate and bought the Delta 16-541. It appeared to be the best out of the smaller dedicated mortisers, and it does do a nice job. That is as long as you are not doing mortises on anything larger than 4 inches. If your making doors, you need to convert the machine with a base spacer, which takes time, adjustment, and disables the adjuster on the fence. If you are an occasional Mortiser, that will suffice. The range of motion on the Delta is only a little over 3 inches. The 1/2hp motor is adequate, but the bit/motor jammed on me twice in a single project. I had to take the bit apart, clean, realign, and reinstall. I also had to be careful to manually keep the wood tight up against the fence. (No clamp)
All of this takes me to the fullest appreciation of the Powermatic and why I ordered the 719A. The fence has a large quick holding clamp, that assures you that your work is going to stay in a perfect line against the fence. The entire table moves left to right with a 16 inch range, and 4 1/2 inch range front to back by using the large wheels on the front. You simply crank with one hand, and plunge with the other. That is efficiency. If you are using a 1/2" bit, and want to make a 1" mortise, you can use the other wheel, move it back a half inch and finish the run. The Powermatic sports a 1 HP motor, twice that of the Delta, therefore it accepts bits up to 1 inch. So you can even make 1" mortises in a single pass. If you look at the very long plunge handle, you can see that it would be easy to create a lot of leverage.
I was concerned about the board capacity in size, so I called Powermatic. The rep measured the distance between the chuck, and the TOP of the fence, and it measured 9 inches. Add to that the 4 inch height of the fence, and you can see that this is a machine with a large capacity. It also has a plunge range of motion of 8 or 9 inches according to the rep. You can see that the Powermatic will handle most any size board. Using the large control wheel, moving the fence front to back, with a range of 4 1/2 inches, means you could put a mortise in the center of an 8" thick beam. Simply put, you don't need to disassemble anything for a full range of sizes. If you are doing repetitive runs, there is a built in adjustable stop on the right side. With a 282 pound shipping weight, you can put in a good size board, clamp it in, and not worry about it tilting onto the floor.
A last few considerations; It is shipped in two boxes, and one of them is 240 pounds. So my advice is to pay the twenty five dollars extra (current rate) for lift gate service. That way you don't have someone waiting in the truck while you offload the crate from a high bed truck. If you are unloading alone, your back is worth more than that.
The only downside is that the purchase does not include any chisel and bit sets. They are extra. Although I can see why Powermatic would do it that way, considering that Deltas bits, and several others fit the machine as well. That way you can get it for a more competitive price, and add the chisels only as you need them. I asked if the Delta chisels were as good as the Powermatics, and the rep professionally did not make an assertion, but I got from the tone of his voice that they were not. In all fairness Delta has two levels of chisels, at two different price points. Their professional bits are highly rated.
This Powermatic is a great commercial/industrial grade piece of equipment, that should give you a lifetime of service. The efficiency created with the unit will more than pay for itself. A foot activated automatic Mortiser is even more efficient, but you can only justify that level of price tag if you are mortising all day for a living. This Powermatic 719A fills the bill perfectly for a wood working professional, and the serious enthusiast. Highly recommended.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Machine
The machine took a month to arrive.Take Amazon's shipping estimates with a grain of salt.It was easy to assemble while laying down (as other recommenders on this site suggested). However, it was a bear to stand up by myself (other recommenders on this site seemed to imply that it was easy).I would suggest asking a friend to help. The manual leaves a little to be desired. The mortiser itself, on the other, hand meets or exceeds my expectations. So far it seems well worth the investment.

5-0 out of 5 stars Powermatic gets it right.
I unpacked my Powermatic Mortiser and had it up and running in about half an hour.My former tool was a bargain basement type mortiser. Not bad, but hard to set up and get consistent results.I heard the stories about drill press adapters and decided not to go there even though Jet had supplied one with my drill press as a freebie. It's still in the box. Here are three things I would recommend Powermatic attend to.

1.A threaded rod with nuts on the left/right table would make setting the length of the mortise easier and more accurate.I used this scheme on my homemade version.

2.Larger threads on the set screws for the stops would be some added insurance over the long haul.

3.I use a dial indicator to set up some of my machines.I can "dial in" a setting with less fuss and more accuracy. For the heck of it, I put the dial indicator on the bed of the Powermatic mortiser.Over the length of the left/right travel, it had about 0.015" inches run-out.That means for a two-inch mortise there would be less than 0.002" error over its length. For machine tools, 0.015" would be unacceptable.I was surprised to see that much in an x-y table. For woodworking, I wouldn't worry about it.I mention it only to let the Powermatic boys know we're watching you.

Outside of my nit picking, this is one solid, well-made tool.Considering how rapidly and accurately it turns out work, it will be quite a money saver in the long run.

    21-Apr-2005
After a few dozen mortises the position of the mortise starts to wander. The dial indicator showed quite a bit of slop in the vertical gibs.A few minutes of adjusting and a shot of aerosol grease and all is well.I check it from time to time but have yet to adjust it again. The bar that holds the left/right stops needed a bit of tightening at the ends. The stops themselves hold pretty well if you're careful not to whack them too hard when you move the bed.I found some parts in my junk box to make a stop for forward/backward motion. This improves the accuracy when making mortises that are wider than the hollow chisel. This might be a good thing to add to future versions.

Consistent light pressure on the clamp works best.Over tightening causes the location of the clamp to wander a bit and the flexture in the workpiece can affect accuracy.A more robust attachment for the clamp would be a good improvement.

Helpful tip:For mortises that show, i.e., not covered by a shoulder or have the tenon protruding from the mortise, scorethe cross grain edge of the mortise before using the Mortiser.Removing the drill from the hollow chisel and setting up your stops makes the Mortiser into a layout tool for the exact locations of the mortise.Make a shallow mark at either end of the stops.Connect the dots with a knife or chisel to eliminate crushed fibers at ends of the mortise. On through mortises start from the "show" side.Stop short of having the hollow chisel go all the way through.Only let the drill break through the back surface and trim with a chisel.A backup piece will not prevent the chisel from tearing out with brittle woods like oak.Flipping the workpiece and cutting from the reverse side often results in a bent mortise.Better to cut deep from the one direction and trim.

Another helpful tip:One of the complaints about hollow chisel mortisers is how the drill sometimes makes a hole wider than the hollow chisel. This leaves an unsightly circular bite along the edge of the mortise.A simple solution to this is to CAREFULLY file the circumference of the business end of the drill until it is smaller than the width of the hollow chisel.Mount the drill on blocks and check with a dial indicator to keep the filing concentric. The slightly smaller drill removes less material, but the difference in force necessary to push the hollow chisel is insignificant. If the drill is slightly out of round, not to worry. It's the hollow chisel that makes the final cut. ... For you furniture makers out there who find yourselves spending more time than you'd like setting up the mortising attachment on your drill press (then taking it off, again), JET's affordable benchtop mortiser ought to be a welcome addition to your woodshop's tool collection. Designed to take up to 1/2-inch chisel bits, JET's benchtop mortiser runs off a 1/2-horsepower induction motor. At only 44 pounds, the tool is sturdy but also easily maneuvered, plus it reverses on its base to allow for mortising in long stock. The 4-3/4-inch head stroke is great. Bits are easy to change. Just flip open the steel door on either side (these doors are made of flimsy plastic on some of the competition's models) to gain easy access to the chuck. And, thanks to the 4-inch chuck key, there's little chance of banging or scraping your knuckles while switching bits (a small touch, perhaps, but a nice one). We also like the quick-setting depth stop on this tool--as well as the removable toggle switch that keeps less-experienced (or child-size) hands out of harm's way. The mortiser's feed handle adjusts, too, so you can choose the most comfortable position for each application--another nice touch. Set on a heavy-duty cast-iron base with four predrilled mounting holes, this dependable machine allows any woodworker, from the beginner to the expert, to create fantastic-looking mortise-and-tenon joints. --Justin Paul ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good Machine, Horible Customer Service
Over the past three months, I have purchased 4 Jet woodworking machines, including this one to the tune of almost $2400.Until recently, I was planning to purchase a Jet Planer Molder and Performax Drumsander, but based on my recent experience with the WHM Tool Group, who makes this equipment, I am having second thoughts.Although I am for the most part happy with the machines I've purchased, when I was assembling my table saw, the fence that came with the saw did not match the one in the instructions, and I had to spend a considerable amount of time on hold with the WHM customer service department to find out how to mount it to the saw.I can live with that, but as I began to use the saw I discovered that although two arbor wrenches are required to change the saw blade, only one came with the saw. Although I don't think it is too much to ask that they throw in two $6 wrenches with a $1500 saw, I thought, I'd just order one from the WHM website. There I found that the Shipping for the $6 wrench would be $19.99.I sent a note to WHM regarding this requesting a reply, and did not receive one. When I called a week later, I was curtly told that the saw comes with only one wrench. When I asked why it would cost $20 to send a $6 wrench that would fit in a standard letter sized envelope, I was told that they do not ship via U.S Mail, and that was the end of the conversation.I ordered the wrench to the tune of $26.70, and was surprised again to find that it was back ordered with no expected date of delivery. I sent a copy of this rating to WHM tool group to give them a chance to respond, but again have received no response almost a week later. For what ever it's worth, if customer service is important to you and you don't want to have to purchase things that should come with the tool and then be charged three times the value of the item for shipping and handling you might want to consider another brand.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Machine For the Money
You cant really go wrong here with this mortise machine.I read all the reviews prior to buying this machine about the shipping damage and was holding my breath hopeing mine would make it in one piece but I have to say the packing could use some work. The cast iron base was cracked about 4 inches when it arrived.I called Jet and they sent one out UPS ground right away with no problems. The only other problem I found with the machine is the fence is not straight. Its off about 3/16 inch or better on alignment due to the hole not being bored straight through the body of the machine during manufacture.I cut some really nice mortise joints through some red oak and the machine works very good. The bits that came with it are very sharp and seem to function great.Would have gave it 5 stars if not for the fence problem. All in all not bad for the price.

I've built several projects with this mortiser over the past year.It has done a great job.The stop mechanism works great, it's sturdy, and the chisels that come with it are plenty sharp.I've built about 4 tables with this machine, and I am currently building a cabinetmaker's bench, which requires me to bore mortises about 3 inches deep.Since I am using poplar for my base it didn't bog down the motor like maple would, however, the base wasn't wide enough to accomodate the large legs.No biggie:Rockler sells an extension table for this model that I am considering buying.

I wish they would have included mounting hardware (like my Delta drill press), so that I could mount it without any further trips to the hardware store. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars huge machine
This drill press is enormous. The head on it probably weighs 175# or more. Not an assembly job for the weak or faint of heart.

Table casting is pretty rough in the coolant channels/t-slots, but the table is smooth. The motor runs at 1725 rpm, and the whole machine is very quiet.

The drill press is huge. Can't even compare it to a 17" model. The table is very large. The machine definitely is not top have, with a decent size very heavy cast iron base, it stays where you put it.

Have I mentioned that this is the biggest machine in my shop?

3-0 out of 5 stars A lot of machine, but a lot of hassle
After much research and deliberation between the Jet, Delta, and Grizzly, I opted for the extra muscle of the Grizz.I received my drill 7 hours after the window for delivery that was given to me, and frankly, it looked like a bomb had gone off inside the box.The top of the box was not even attached. As the delivery guy was removing it from the truck, the head assembly and column were literally falling out of the package.I declined acceptance of the package.I called Grizzly the next day, and they seemed genuinely concerned, but it took another 10 days for me to receive my drill (when 3-5 days was promised).Once I finally got my drill press in good condition - the second time - I was impressed. It is an absolute behemoth. It is so much more machine than the Delta and Jet.There is A LOT of metal in this machine. It took me and another guy everything we had to get the head on the column.Once assembled, I was impressed with how quiet and stable this 1.5 hp beast ran. While assembly was rather straight forward, I was very unimpressed with the manual. It was dated, and did not reflect many of the updates to the drill press. It had very little on the operation and different speeds of the machine.I called Grizzly and pointed this out, and all they could tell me was that the manual had not been updated. All in all, this is one beefy machine, and I am very impressed with the operation.I really wish that Grizzly would pay more attention to some of the details though, like shipping, customer care, and the manual.I like this tool a lot, but I will think twice now before dealing with Grizzly again.

1-0 out of 5 stars 20" drill press
This 20" drill press will last for years. It is the lowest priced 20" drill press on the market. Not the cheapest. G's service is great.I have needed parts for the G machines I own and they have sent them free with no charge. I have a small proto type shop and I use this drill press for metal drilling. It works great.Of the 74 machines I own 7 are Grizazly and I would buy them again. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A solid machine at a good price
When shopping for my first woodworking drill press for my shop, I wanted something that was solid, powerful, reliable, and something that I wouldn't outgrow.I've grown tired of buying cheap and low-end machines and later wishing I had sprung for something better.I've also been disappointed in Delta's quality lately (my second choice), so I decided to try another brand.Having used this drill press on a project of mine for about a week now, I'm convinced this is the machine.

I received my drill press about a week after I ordered it.The box is too heavy to be handled by one person alone, but most people should be able to move it piece by piece once they've received it.Assembly is easy, but you will definitely need help mounting the head onto the column as the head is very heavy. This machine is quite a beast for a benchtop drill press -- be sure your workbench can handle the size and weight of this machine.

At 3/4 hp, this drill has more than enough power to drill through wood.In fact, it's sometimes hard to tell if your bit has punched through the bottom of the wood since the motor never seems to strain when drilling. You'd think a motor like that would create a lot of noise, but it's much lower than I had expected.

The only irritation I've had so far is Grizzly's addition of a depth stop gauge on the left side of the head. Now don't get me wrong, this is a fine addition, but they've removed the scale on the collar lock on the right side without removing any of the hardware. So essentially, you have two methods for a depth stop. The depth stop gauge on the left is easy to bend if you're not paying attention, so I'll be using the collar stop on the right after adding my own scale.(This change has not been incorporated into the manual yet.)

One interesting thing I discovered is that this model and the G7944 (the floor model) are identical, including the manual and dataplate on the head, except for three column parts. So for about $65, you can order the three column parts from Grizzly and convert this machine to the G7944 floor model (and vise versa) if you decide that better fits your needs in the future.

Overall, I've found this drill press to be an excellent machine and wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to anyone.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good Machine, Poor Customer Service
This is my first tool purchase from Grizzly, and I am very disappointed with their customer service! In all the pictures and literature, including the manual that came with the dp, it shows a depth guage ring on the feed shaft. However, when I looked at the head unit, there wasn't a depth ring.Instead there was the ruler-type guage attached to the spindle. The problem with this is in order to attach the Mortising Accessory, you have to remove the depth guage...then you don't have a guage for mortising.I called customer service and at first they said sorry, too bad and there was nothing they could do.After complaining for a few minutes the tech consulted with a Supervisor and their solution was to send me the parts to change it to the advertised type...but I HAD TO PAY FOR THE PARTS!Now, it wasn't the price, just the principle. The parts cost a whole $4.00.I explained that after this experience, they would be losing me as a customer and they did't care.I would rather pay more money to purchase from another company with better customer service. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Proves P T Barnum's point
"There's a sucker born every minute," he said -- and there are obviously plenty of knaves to take his money.

These bits are apparently NOT cobalt alloy steel, but only the cheaper high-speed steel with some sort of colorful plating that increases the durability of the cutting edge not one whit. The description seems carefully crafted to obscure that fact.
Standard cobalt-alloy bits (M42 alloy if memory serves) have been a common item in machine shops for at least fifty years, for good reason. SOLID cobalt alloy is tougher, harder, and more heat-resistant than M2 high-speed steel alloy, which itself is more heat-resistant than carbon steel.
Even carbon steel is just fine for most woodworking bits. The advantage of cobalt alloy is most evident when working tough alloys like titanium and some stainless steels. Any coatings applied to the bit serve primarily to reduce friction along the drill flutes, just as cutting oil and wax do. Their secondary function has evidently become the attraction of ill-informed customers, much as shiny objects will attract fish.

2-0 out of 5 stars Offshore Tools
I truly appreciate the comments on this drill set. I've decided not to order the 115 pc. set. I must question my judgement for having considered this set. The value of any coating is lost immediately when the bit is sharpened and a such seem ill-suited for anything but casual, homeowner use. Quality control seems to be lacking as drills are out-of-round, the drill point angle is uneven, etc. The drill point angle can be corrected but there goes any perceived advantage of a coating. Never mind drill point angle and coatings...an out-of-round drill bit is worse than no bit. In closing, two things come to mind. #1 is, "you get what you pay for". #2 is, "if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is". Thanks to the reviewers.

    Editorial Review

A staple in the professional woodshop, a drill press should be able to perform grunt work, yet quickly adjust for precision applications. Jet's 16-1/2-inch model does just that. Made of cast-iron and heavy-gauge steel components, this press spins bits up to 5/8 of an inch with 16 speeds from 200 to 3,630 rpm. A 3/4-horsepower induction motor drives the belts, and, for your convenience, it can run off either 115-volt outlets (for which it comes prewired) or 230-volt sources. The large 13-3/4-inch worktable glides easily with rack-and-pinion adjustment and tilts 45 degrees right or left to accommodate your needs. Two features we like are the positive depth stop on the left side, which quickly adjusts and locks in place via three nuts, and the built-in lamp, a nice touch some competitors don't offer. Changing belt position is a snap after flipping open the hinged metal cover, and, to personalize the press for your comfort and peace of mind, you can adjust the tension on the spindle return spring, as well as lock out the start button to protect others in your absence. This industrial-style drill press is a tool any professional or serious home woodworker can depend on. --Justin Paul ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Good Drill Press
I chose this drill press after reading a lot of reviews comparing Jet, Delta, Ridgid, etc., both here and in forums, magazines, etc., and the Jet received higher marks on average (all had reviews that ranged from excellent to poor, so one has to obtain some sort of weighted average).I also checked out the Ridgid and the Jet at local stores, and both looked and felt good (lowering quill, manually turning spindle, raising table). The Jet had a larger "swing," longer quill travel, and a larger motor (3/4 hp vs. 1/2 hp) than the Ridgid, though the Ridgid was cheaper. Also, one local store that carries very high quality power tools only stocked Jet drill presses, an indication that the owner is putting his reputation behind them.

Assembly was easy and was completed without a hitch.Putting a straight 3/8" rod into the chuck, I checked that the table was square to the rod and that runout was minimal (I forget the measurements, but runout was very small).

I have had this drill press for 3 months now, and it is working well.At first use, there was some vibration at almost all speeds, so I checked that the pullies were aligned vertically (coplanar), which they were, and that the motor was not vibrating (it was smooth when removed and run on the bench).I then purchased a 5' link belt, which nicely made the two ~29" belts required, and the vibration was reduced to a minimal level (passes nickel test even when starting). The vibration was not really excessive before the link belts, but enough to make me less than ecstatic with my purchase. With the link belts, I'm very happy with the drill press.

The lowest speed of 200 rpm is very handy for larger Forstner bits and hole saws. The built-in light is nice (I had no bulb trouble that others noted), as is the chuck key holder, a small item but very convenient.

My only complaint is that the rack and gear system for changing the table height has some areas where it wants to bind a bit and then "jump."However, I crank slowly, and when I feel resistance, I back off and ease through it.Unlike some reviewers's units, my rack is straight and flush with the support, and slides smoothly (when rotating the table to either side), though problems that others have noted with the racks have helped by alerting me to swing the table slowly, watching the rack ends as they slide.

Overall a nice drill press that I hope will last until my son or one of my daughters inherits it from me.

2-0 out of 5 stars Many problems right out of box
I bought the Jet because, like many others, I was impressed with the good things other reviewers had to say about its overall value. The motor is more than powerful enough, the construction seems sturdy, and the range of speeds is impressive.

Now let me tell you about my ordeal with this drill press. When it arrived (1 day late) via ABF, the box was absolutely mutilated. The driver noted the damage to the box, and that there was no visible damage--which was true enough. In spite of the box's condition, the pieces inside seemed to be undamaged. Assembly took only about an hour. Everything fit together nicely, except the rack, which is bowed so that there is about 1/2 in of space between it and the support post. The cast iron base is heavy and sturdy, but mine is warped--no matter where I place it, I have to shim one corner to keep it from rocking. The motor is quiet, but the motor-mount is bent. The whole motor assembly sits about 7 degrees off plumb. Naturally this is a little disconcerting. I had no trouble mounting the arbor and chuck to the quill, but the run out is so severe (over 1/32 in.) that I get oblong holes. And talk about rattle! This thing rattles in more places than I can count! From top to bottom! Forget about the `nickel test', I can't even get a wrench to stay put on the table--it dances right over the edge.

In short, this drill press is 100% unusable.

I assume poor handling during shipping caused most of the problems I have experienced, but judging by other reviews, maybe not all.

I'm more than disappointed. I hope cases like this are rare.

    UPDATE:
I have been on the phone with tech support for over an hour. The rep I spoke with was very patient and understanding and he didn't dismiss my frustration. After some time talking about the problems, he sent me off to do a little troubleshooting on my own. When I called him back with the results, he advised me to send the whole thing back to Amazon.

I plan to exchange it for the same model. Hopefully the next one will work. I'll let you know.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Drill Press - Amazon Stinks Though
This drill press is very nice. The description isn't as thorough as it could be on the site.It has plenty of speeds and the quality of the work that comes off of it is very nice.

    Editorial Review

If your projects require you to drill with big bits or if you find yourself attempting to drill with precision under questionable circumstances, this heavy-duty 16-1/2-inch drill press from Delta will help you get out of your, um, hole. Running off a 3/4-horsepower motor that can be wired for either 115 or 230 volts, it gives you an impressive deep plunge length of 4-7/8 inches and holds up to 5/8-inch-diameter bits. Solid cast-iron construction and a 3-1/8-inch column give it the industrial feel and durability we look for in this type of tool. You'll enjoy the rotating work base--which bevels, of course, 45 degrees each way for drilling angles--as well as the depth stop that can be set quickly and easily with microadjustments and a locking mechanism, great for repetitive drilling. While other models sometimes place hard-to-read speed and belt charts under the top cap, Delta uses a wide, clearly legible chart to explain how to configure the belts for each of 16 speeds (215 to 2,720 rpm). And, thanks to the smooth, cool-running induction motor inside, you're not likely to find yourself shopping for a drill press again for an extremely long time. --Justin Paul ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent machine
I recently purchased the Delta 17-965 based on comments and several reviews in magazines. I must say I'm very pleased. This machine runs smooth and fairly quietly. It appears well made with a fine fit and finish. The measured runout, to the best of my abilities, appears to be about .002" on the chucked drill bit's shaft. I found it on sale in the tool crib catalog cheaper than the JET, with which I bought a magnetic base lamp. This drill press will probably outlive me. Its always nice knowing you'll never have to replace a peice of equipment again.

    I highly recommend this machine.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice tool
I've used this tool a lot since purchasing it last Nov. I've had no problem with it. Be sure and have help in lifting the head up onto the column, strong and tall help is best. My only complaint is the plastic belt cover tends to vibrate. If the resulting hum could be eliminated, it would be a very quiet machine. It's not real loud, just an annoyance which I should be able to fix in some way. Nicely finished and easily adjusted. The depth stop is a great improvement over what has been the "norm" in the past. Quick, tool less adjustment which stays put.

5-0 out of 5 stars Think Twice Before Buying
I ordered the Delta 17-965 from Amazon which was suppose to come with a mail in offer for a mortising kit. Imagine my surprise when I did not receive the paperwork for the mail in offer and I learned from Amazon that the offer was a misprint which they would not honor. To make matter worse they want to charge me return shipping which is almost $400! Think twice and buy locally. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Get a Bench Top Mortiser if you can afford one
I've been using this attachment for a couple of years now. I recommend it only if you cannot afford a bench top mortiser.

First, attaching the fence to my 16 1/2" Delta drill press is not easy at all. In fact, it's a real pain in the keester. You would think this would be easy because it is a Delta drill press but it isn't.

Second, the workpiece holddowns are cheap and difficult to work with. No matter what you do, the workpiece moves when you don't want it to move, or it stays put when you want it to move. It's not a good design.

Third, the chisels do not drill perfectly square holes. The auger bits are just a hair bigger than the chisels. So, you end up with a circle with square corners. This effect is more pronounced the bigger the chisel/bit.

I finally ditched the table accessories and built my own table jig (which works surprisingly well and looks cool too). This solved the first two issues. If it is really important to have perfectly square mortises, I cut them by hand. This solves the final issue. (Note: the mortises are OK for most joinery because you have a shoulder on the tenon to hide the slightly out of square mortise.)

3-0 out of 5 stars Good tool, but not worth buying
I bought this tool with my drill press a couple years ago and have hardly used it.There is nothing wrong with it, but I find that there are several things that stop me from using it more often. The first is the setup. It takes too long and is too awkward.Personally I'd rather pop in a forstener bit into my drill press and make several passes to achieve a very good mortise - although this doesn't work if you are doing a through mortise.

    PROS:
    * Does the job it states
    * Much cheaper than a dedicated mortiser

    CONS:
    * Much too time consuming to set up
    * Has a very hard time cutting through hardwoods

Of all the mobile bases we've seen, this is the king. The sturdy corner brackets, wheels and casters, foot pedal, and all the hardware are supplied; you supply the hardwood. We like this deal because you make the stand to fit your needs, all the way up to 30 by 30 inches and 300 pounds of load if you build your rails of oak. In a small shop or a garage shop that has to accommodate your cars, put together a couple of these and roll your tools out of the way when you're done working. With other bases we've looked at, you have to tip up your tool and waddle carefully. With this Delta, just unlock the foot pedal, engage the third-point caster, and you're off. The wheels and casters are quality, and they move like a dream. We wouldn't limit use to just tools--this base could come in handy for moving appliances, too. The instructions were a little vague on one point:You take the length and width measurements of your tool and then add 1/2" to BOTH to determine the lengths of your wood pieces. Also, and it says this in the manual: be sure to allow clearance for the wheels at the end of the wood.I was 1/8" off and had to remove four bolts to cut the wood shorter, not a big deal as it was past the bolt holes.

I used a drill press to drill the holes and ended up drilling a bigger hole than I thought I needed, in order to get the alignment thru the brackets. The bolts are 5/16", so I tought a 11/32" would be enough, but ended up drilling 3/8" holes.I used hard maple 2x2s, scrap from another project.I should have chamfered the corners slightly as that would have made for a better fit.

I also used a 12" c-clamp in places to flex the sides of the brackets where they wrap the wood to get the bolt thru and threads started. And I got to use my air ratchet for the first time since I bought it a year ago.

Hope these assembly tips help, and I recommend this mobile base for just about all spplications.

3-0 out of 5 stars barely works on my floor
The is a great idea and basically serves the purpose I needed out of it.But I must say that I am disappointed. The caster wheel only lifts the rubber feet up about half an inch. This is fine if your shop floor is perfectly flat. But mine is not - it has a sloped curvature that leads into a drain. So the rubber feet drag a little whenever I roll the machine near the drain.Sometimes I feel like I'm dragging the whole thing with the "mobile base" providing minimal assistance.Again, this is probably not a problem if your shop floor is perfectly flat.I can probably jury rig it somehow with a little thought, although I am busy on so many other shop projects at the moment.

Oh yeah - assembly was quite an ordeal. The product itself is simple enough and the instructions are fine, but keep in mind that you are probably dealing with a heavy piece of equipment. The instructions have you lifting and moving your equipment on and off the base several times for measurement and fitting, which is not fun if you're working alone.I suggest you either have a few friends around, or think intelligently about how to tilt your equipment on and off the base without hurting your back.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good if you need a custom footprint light-duty mobile base
I did not see the reviews when I bought this as it was an accessory I saw next to the Delta table saws when I bought my 10" Delta TS at Lowe's on sale a couple weeks ago. I did not find buying exact dimensioned wood hard other than stomaching the cost of four-square surfaced oak at Home Depot prices. For my saw base which measured about 28" by 26" at the feet I appeared to need four2x2 ~30" length pieces and decided to use oak for strength/stability. They sell these for about $10 a piece at the local Home Depot by me, so the net cost of the base doubled to nearly $100. Still, it's a very solid thing and should hold up fine. I also happened to buy a 2nd base a Shop Fox G7314 which costs about $70 and requires no additional wood when I bought my Grizzly 14" band saw a week or so later at the Bellingham, WA store, so I can compare those two products. The Shop Fox doesn't require additional wood or marking or drilling. It's all pre-drilled and metal and takes maybe an hour to assemble - the Delta base took me 2-3 hours to completely assemble, including some hard tamping with a hammer to get the carriage bolts threaded through my not totally precisely aligned 5/16" holes in the wood (by the way the directions tell you to drill 7/16" holes but the included hardware make it obvious that they must mean 5/16") and a 2nd trip to Home Depot for wood. If you have 1-1/2" x 1-1/2" squared wood close at hand and need a really odd or custom table, this base for $50 is a good deal. But this base doesn't come with lock washers like the Shop Fox does and I wonder how long before I need to do something about the hex nuts through the rails starting to loosen and come off (if they do maybe I'll just slip a little epoxy in the threads and reseat them - ain't enough space on the bolt to space a lock washer anyway.) The Shop Fox is heavier duty and it accomodates the dimensions of the tool stand/table you are mounting on it and need the heavy duty (400 lbs - 600 lbs load), it's IMHO a better fit for most large tools/cabinet stands and comes with lock washers space for them on the bolts. The one thing I like here is the convenience of the foot pivot brake release. The Shop Fox uses a dual adjusting knob on each of front swivel casters that you have to bend down and loosen /tighten each time you want to lock / unlock it from fixed base position. I might check out the HTC2000 or possibly the one that General if I can find it somewhere else as those seem like kind a "best of both worlds" hybrid possibilities for what I liked best about this one (the foot brake) and the Shop Fox (fast assembly, flip lock brake, all metal pieces included, no additional wood or drilling time needed). ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Not the most stable base
I acquired the HTC1000 mobile base for over a year for use with my 14 inch closed base Jet bandsaw. This base attracted me because the construction appeared to be sturdy and it was recommended by the sales personnel at Woodcraft where I made the purchase. One of my reasons for selecting this base was the fact that it had four points of contact for stability.

Assembly was a bit complicated but not difficult. I had the base together in about an hour.

Unfortunately, once I had the saw on the base, I was not impressed with the base's performance. The frame of the base is constructed of rather thin pieces of angle iron. When the casters are disengaged, the base should be more stable. However, the two rigid contacts that engage the floor are secured by a couple of L-shaped angle brackets. These do not seem to be sturdy enough for the job and tend to flex considerably during use.The result is a wobbly bandsaw.

I have since purchased the Shop Fox G7314 Heavy-Duty Mobile Base.If you can compare the two side by side you can see that the Shop Fox is of far more substantial construction. The brackets supporting the casters are larger and much thicker. The rails on the Shop Fox are rectangular cross section tubes.All-in-all it makes for a much more rigid base.I have placed a 300-lb contractor-style table saw on the Shop Fox and have had nary a wobble out of it.

On the plus side, the cam levers to raise and lower the base can be easily operated with your toe. When raised, the base rolls easily and is quite maneuverable.

5-0 out of 5 stars Super easy and super good.
This base took less than an hour to assemble and it makes my 300 pound table saw move with ease. When not engaged, the saw is rock solid steady.

3-0 out of 5 stars Finished unit great - Assembly experience a pain
First, to be positive, I agree with the other reviews that the finished product is a nice mobile base.I ordered mine for my Jet 12" bandsaw and it is a good fit and plenty strong.

My issue is with the assembly experience. As others say in their reviews the assembly instructions leave something to be desired.I just don't see why companies don't take an hour and build one of their own products up while reading their own instructions. The problem is they know too much and assume things that aren't written.A minor annoyance was that the numbers of nuts, bolts, washers, etc. didn't match with the quantities listed in the parts list.In the end I had enough of everything but I'd like to have at least what is listed. But my BIG gripe is the fit of the side metal brackets into the corner brackets.Maybe I got unlucky and got some brackets that were out of tolerance but with the side brackets tight against the corner brackets the holes still didn't line up.I ended up having to drill some of the holes a bit larger to get the bolts through.

A good finished product and the price is right but not a particularly happy assembly experience. ... Read more

This is a quality vise as are most Delta products. Before ordering be sure this vise will fit on the table of your drill press. Those specs are not available on the website....call first. When I received this vise I had not realized it would not mount on my Delta model DP 250 drill press so I gave it to my son who is very pleased with it.

    Editorial Review

Here's a benchtop tool that packs the power of the big boys. With 6 inches from bit center to column, you can drill with ease into the center of a foot-wide board with a 3-1/4-inch stroke and a chuck jaw capacity of 1/2 inch. The cast-iron table tilts left and right to 90 degrees with a positive stop at 0, and offers variable-speed control at the turn of a dial. Changing speeds is as simple as turning the knob, allowing you to drill at 500 rpm up to 3,100 rpm. Have some repetitive drilling to do? The adjustable-position locking depth stop takes the trouble out of the job. Rack-and-pinion table depth adjustment makes raising and lowering the table no work at all, and here's a nice bonus--a built-in gooseneck lamp. When you're done drilling, just pop out the removable safety switch to prevent unauthorized use. --Kris Jensen-Van Heste ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars NeverA Delta Machine Again
When i bought this drill press it was just what my husband wanted. Did not weigh to much and had the V S he needed for the different types of wood used. Everything worked fine for about 90 days. All of a sudden when starting up on day it started to make a terrible noise. The noise was relevant to the pulley system and and verable speed system. Tried to take it back to Lowe's where it was purchased,no deal not after 90 days. called Delta and was informed they were having trouble for over two years with the same problem. They have a 7 piece repair kit but they were in the process of moving to a new warehouse and could not send me the kit untill after May 5, 2005. Today is the 15th and nothing yet and All I get from Delta is put on hold. Save your money and buy a good drill press. No repair station within 175 miles. Thanks

    4-0 out of 5 stars Nice drill press!No Morse Taper : (
I checked this drill press out in the store. The variable speed was neat! All the features were solid. The drill ran well and I was about to break out my wallet...

But I NEED to have a morse taper, and this machine has the JT33 taper as part of the spindle. You can change chucks, but can't use neat things like collets.

1-0 out of 5 stars So sorry I bought it
After assembling drill press, I turned it on it ran all of maybe two seconds before it threw the belt off. This was a reconditioned "factory perfect" unit. Table has a pin that is supposed to keep table at 90 degrees. Well it's off by a couple of degrees, it's very obvious. Table is not perpendicular to the column. The quality of this Chinese made tool is not what you would expect from Delta.
I called Delta's customer service and with very little explanation was told they were a where of the problem and would send me a new belt, pulley and retainer clip. Well gee I didn't think I would have to start mechanicing on a brand new tool.
Buyer beware, even at $159 it is too much. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A quick and accurate way to predrill hinges
This bit drills just the right hole for it's specific purpose.Only negative is that it tends to clog with wood shavings and stick. It greatly improves the speed and accuracy of predrilling hinges.

3-0 out of 5 stars How deep can this bit drill?

5-0 out of 5 stars Pilot Point makes drilling a breeze.
I don't know about the long term issue of having to shrapen, but around the house they are awesome. I had a small 10 piece set of the Black and Decker Bullets with a similar tip but where made of a different metal. They where great, but only went to a 1/4 inch, and though I have never had a problem with them slipping in either of my Firestor drills. The non-slip shaft is also a nice feature on the larger drill bits. It's hard to believe the difference in drilling with the Pilot Piont bits it really is amazing.

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed with these
The pilot point is a good idea but they do not last long. Buy a regular set of bits instead.

    4-0 out of 5 stars Great bits while they last . . . .
I am a big fan of this set and of DeWalt's pilot point drill bits. However, once the pilot point dulls it is difficult to sharpen, and individual replacement pilot point bits are hard/impossible to find. So it's either go back to regular bits for replacement, or buy an entirely new kit. ... Read more
