    Editorial Review

You'll get great results with this Black & Decker heavy-duty Edge Hog landscape edger, one of the easiest-to-use pieces of equipment we've come across. You'll be thrilled with how quickly you can get to work, as assembly takes only a few minutes. This is an electric model, so you'll need an extension cord and an electric outlet handy, but you won't have to deal with gas or oil. And it's so quiet you can edge at any time of day--even early Saturday mornings--without worrying about waking up the neighbors.

We found the Edge Hog has plenty of power in its 2-1/4-horsepower motor for both edging and trenching, and it's easy to switch from one to the other by simply raising or lowering the edge guide. The edger weighs only 12 pounds, which allows for easy transportation and great maneuverability around curved paths, but makes it more difficult to maintain a straight line when you're tackling a lawn that hasn't been edged in a while. If you're digging out quite a bit of dirt along with the edge you're creating, it takes some effort to keep the unit stable.

Undoing a screw toward the front of the edger and raising or lowering its leading wheel easily adjusts the depth of the edge groove you're making along with your edge. The unit can also be adjusted to fit the height of the user more comfortably by changing the angle on the guide handle. The blade requires only a pull of the trigger to start instantly and, unlike many gas models, stops as soon as the trigger is released---an important safety feature. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent edger
If you don't want to deal with gas-powered edger, this is THE ONE.I used to have a gas-powered edger, it's just a hassle compared to an electric one.Excellent in trimming along flower beds. I know that long cords can be a hassle but smelling the exhaust of a gas-powered edger is even worse.Another thing is the motor is next to the blade, so the weight is on the ground, NOT on your shoulder!Very good edger!

5-0 out of 5 stars Makes lawn maintenance easier!
This edger is a major time and muscle saver over the manual ones I've used, such as the Rittenhouse edging and trenching tool (ASIN: B0002ZQGZQ). I still use the manual Rittenhouse to start new edging projects, but this electric edger is a dream come true for ongoing maintenance. My yard needs re-edging about every 6 weeks, so the time and energy I've saved since getting it is significant.

Assembling this out of the box is a two minute job. It's solidly constructed and it's obvious that B&D paid a lot of attention to both ergonomics and safety. It's well balanced, has an adjustable handle, and sports a heavy-duty electrical connection that includes a cord minder and an oversized, umbrella-like plug.

You can use this in either trenching mode or edging mode. I prefer the hand tool I cited above for trenching, but use this to do the initial outline or layout for new projects. The reason I still use the manual tool for trenching projects is the electrical motor in the Edge Hog is pretty powerful and there are a lot of subsurface rocks in my area. I don't want to risk prematurely shortening the cutting blade's life, or - worse - causing injury or damage from flying rocks. This unit is that powerful.

Aside from the features mentioned above, the price/performance of the Edge Hog makes it an excellent value.

If you want to maintain a nicely manicured lawn (and have access to outside electricity) this tool is as effective as gas powered units I've used, and a lot more economical to operate.

As always, I doesn't mean me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to use ... Professional result !
I started to care for my lawn again after a hiatus of many years. Bought a new electric mower from Sears (made for them by B&D) and a manual edger similar to a Sears item I bought many years ago.

My overgrowth at the edges was substantial so I really had to labor with the manual edger. Lots of elbow grease but I managed to dig a decent "trench" at the paving. For the future, however, I definitely wanted something automatic.

I found the B&D Edge Hog here on Amazon and like with many products here I immediately jumped into the Customer Reviews. The 4+ star rating is exceptional for any product and after reading some glowing reports I took a chance on one.

In my first outing, I will admit to causing quite a few sparks against the concrete as I adjusted to using and aligning the tool. After my second outing, having the advantage of some experience and a nice "trench" already in place, plus the value of the edge guard, there was little sparking and the task was amazingly quick and easy. The resulting look equaled what I was receiving from a more professional (and expensive) landscaper who used a huge gas model.

My only problem is that I was unable to see the guide wheel from my vantage point in the rear of the edger. I compensated by using the guide imprinted on the front housing, above the hidden wheel. That was very adequate and the sparks rarely flew. My reserve blade will likely not be needed until deep into next year's cutting season, if then. It's a substantial blade, and in my view well worth the $7 cost.

I have neighbors with 2 in 1 trimmers (the kind with nylon rope) that can be oriented 90 degrees to act like an edger. I can't imagine preferring that over the Edge Hog's solid cutting blade.

Two year warrantees are not easy to come by these days and I was impressed by B&D's willingness to stand behind it that long, especially having just bought a SONY 27" WEGA TV for $450 and its 90 day labor "warranty".

To anyone on the fence about this product, I would add to what the others have said and say "Go for it!"

    Editorial Review

Don't think you're man or woman enough to handle a piece of power equipment? Fear no more. Black & Decker's bump feed string trimmer is a great buy for even the beginning gardener who needs to whack weeds regularly. Its 3-1/2 amp motor munches medium-to-thick weeds with precision and ease, even when weeds are a tangled web. The 12-inch cutting path and 10,000 rpm get the job done fast. This Black & Decker is easy to maneuver and can be used to trim weeds in some hard-to-reach places where other trimmers fail. It will also challenge thicker weeds, but watch out for vines, which can get tangled up above the cutting spool. To feed the spool, simply tap the trimmer against the ground.

Black & Decker definitely keeps the consumer in mind by providing comfort with an adjustable, textured top handle for firm gripping and maximum control. This string trimmer is not too heavy, either; weighing about 5 pounds, it's a good fit, even for smaller gardeners. You may start to feel a light vibration in your hands after a long trimming job, but it's minimal. This Black & Decker model can be used regularly and doubles as an edger. The Groom 'n' Edge button rotates the trimmer head 180 degrees to convert the trimmer to an edger and back again. In seconds, you can turn the head, and you'll hear the snap when it's in place. An edge guide provides precise trimming and edging around sidewalks and driveways and does a good job of keeping you at a safe distance from rocks or even the side of your deck or house.

This string trimmer, as well as most other electric trimmers, is best suited for small yards that are accessible with extension cords. Because electric trimmers are generally lighter and more comfortable, they are easy to handle. If you're looking to whack unruly weeds on your otherwise well-maintained yard, this electric trimmer is a less-powerful yet long-lasting alternative to more expensive gas-powered trimmers. Be sure to wear hand, eye, and foot protection when operating any trimmer. A 30-day no-risk satisfaction guarantee and full two-year warranty are included. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars B&D in for the sale...not for customer service
B&D will not provide instructions on-line for rewinding the spool. They will only tell you how to buy new spools.Their own spools have a "REWIND LINE" directional arrow...but this is a single line spool and they don't tell you which of the four holes or two anchor notches to use, or the manner in which to secure the line.

Can't call them...they work bankers hours Mon-Fri...useless for the average weekend warrior.I certainly don't do yardwork in the middle of the workday.Nor would my employer appreciate my use of the phone for weed whacking advice.

I am forced to go to the local hardware store and buy a new spool and do the detective work myself. This seems a bit selfish of B&D. ..withholding the information just so they can sell new spools.

Also, after three uses, the string guard broke off. Now, there is nothing to keep the proper distance from walls, shrubs, trees, etc.So the string breaks faster. But at least B&D will sell you a new spool!

Recommendation:tell B&D to post a manual on-line, and give honest information to customers.Otherwise, I'll spend the extra money to buy a brand that cares about customer service more than the upsell.

3-0 out of 5 stars Bad Plastic
Just about everthing on this item that is plastic has cracked and broken. I do not mistreat my tools and am disappointed with the quality of this item

    2-0 out of 5 stars B%D TRIMMER
Buyers should be aware this trimmer requires a cord. You will need to buy a long extention cord for this.Has no battery.Once you buy the cord at your local hardware store and try it, the trimmer does work fairly well for light work. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

This battery-powered trimmer converts to a rolling lawn edger with just a turn of the handle. The 24-volt Power Core will give you up to 45 minutes of cutting time on just one charge. A 10-inch cutting swath makes quick work of yard trimming, and when you need more line, just bump the head and it feeds out more .08 commercial-grade line automatically. We like the symmetry and nice balance of this trimmer in hand, too. The unit stores in its wall-mounted charger, which indicates battery status with red and green lights. A great two-in-one yard tool for the homeowner.--Kris Jensen-Van Heste ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Poorly Made
I have had all the same problems as the others who have posted here.
String cutter went fast, spool cover tab broke, charge doesn't last as long as the Ryobi I last had. too much fiddling with the string feeder. BEFORE YOU BUY FINDOUT ABOUT REPLACEMENT PARTS AND HOW TO GET THEM.

3-0 out of 5 stars A Lot of Hype
A so-so trimmer.Line cutter will surely break.Replacement cost is ridiculous. Was a previous owner of Yardstick model LT10. Needed a replacement battery at a cost of $20.00.Not too bad except replacement battery was a "dud".Customer service offered me a 30% loyal customer discount on a YS24 at a cost of $71.00.Found out I could purchase a new one at local hardware for $69.00 without the so-called 30% loyal customer discount!!!.Having previous experience with the YS24 (my daughters)and as stated above the problem with the line cutter, I think I will pass on this one.The 30% discount amounts to "zip".Thanks but no thanks!!!!!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Fits My Needs Perfectly
Grass trimmer is perfect for a quick follow-up trim on edging around the house.I have a very high maintenance yard with multiple high-end gas mowers and trimmers, but this trimmer compliments the others due to its quick-no hassle touchups around the house. There is absolutely NO hassle as the line never sticks or breaks inside the head. However, keep in mind this is only good for short 15 minute runs and limited to thin grass. The motor is not powerful and there is only a single line off the head, but this is OK for how I use it.One thing I would like added by manufacturer is a quick change secondary battery. The charge time is very long. ... Editorial Review

Sure, you could spend a couple hundred dollars on a gas edger. But Ryobi’s Trimmer Plus attachment does everything a regular edger can do--except take up a lot of room and leave your wallet light. The hungry 7-1/2-inch steel blade will cut an edge up to 2-1/2 inches for clean, deep edges along your driveway, sidewalks, and curbs. The wheel is just large enough to offer perfect stability without sacrificing maneuverability. Like all Trimmer Plus attachments, this edger add-on snaps securely onto any gas-powered Trimmer Plus unit with the Click-Link shaft. And when you’re done edging, just remove it from the trimmer shaft, and you’re ready for a new task: trimming, pruning, hedge trimming, leaf blowing, cultivating, and when the snow flies, even clearing your driveway.--Kris Jensen-Van Heste ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Power? Control? This little edger has none
This edger might be useful for a tiny townhouse patio, but if you have more than 10 feet of edging to do, look to a dedicated edging unit and not this substandard add-on.The trimmer itself is a great unit and I have no complaints--but the edger add-on only has one guide wheel which makes it difficult to cut a straight line. The power is also insufficient to chew through grass and dirt if you've waited more than a week from your last edging. Spend your edging dollars elsewhere...

1-0 out of 5 stars Good Luck Trying to have your Ryobi product Serviced
I purchased the Ryobi Lawn Eddger for my Ryobi trimmer. On my second use, the Lawn Edger became stuck to the trimmer body.
I tried 4 different local "Authorized Ryobi" service centers. None will accept a Ryobi trimmer in for "warranty repair". For the past 2 weeks, the only message I have been able to get on the "Ryobi 1-800 number" has been "Due to heavy call volume... we request that you call back later".Even the Ryobi web page is most of the time out of service or extremely slow.
I would never consider buying any Ryobi (or products from the same family).

5-0 out of 5 stars Yard-man 4 stroke Gas Trimmer
Here in the state of California. We cannot use a 2 stroke anymore. I had to buy a four stroke Yard-Man Gas trimmer. . The good thing is I can still use my Roybi accessories and do not have to mix gas anymore. I have the blower, Weed trimmer and the edger. The first thing i did was take off the wheel. I have plenty of power to run the edger. I also have the Blow/Vac/Mulcher. Using the edger I push the Blade against the curb and get a stright edge. I have no problems cutting forward or backwards. Just be carefull using the edger without the wheel. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Starting third year of use
This lawn trimmer has met our needs well for two and a half years now.We purchased the optional handle/extender that allows me to stand up while trimming the grass. Each fall I use the hedge blades to trim our bushes, and they have also performed well. Now into the third season, the battery only lasts about half as long as it did when new.It is convenient simply hanging the trimmers on the wall into the charging stand (which also holds the hedge trimmer blade). We've had no problems with jambs or slipping gears. The trimmer has held up well.(If I can get a replacement battery quickly, I'll be very satisfied.)

1-0 out of 5 stars clipper housing
clipper housing does not hold working parts in, I have had two units and both have the same defect. Very poor quality control by the manufacturing co.

1-0 out of 5 stars Bought 2 - neither held up........
Bought one.......used only on grass twice.......it stopped working so I exhanged it for another which was used only on grass once or twice before it quit.In both cases, something inside the shears seems to have broken, preventing the smaller "trimmer" nylon gear from turning the larger gear on the cutting blades (the smaller gear just whirls without any effect). ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Good, but it has an Achilles' Heel
I got the trimmer about 4 months ago.It worked great and I had no problems with it--until i got into a piece of woody plant among the weeds. The trimmer jammed, I unjammed it, and it has not worked properly since. The problem is that the drive mechanism is a strange plastic loop with an excentric cam-type drive. The plastic cam runs inside the plastic loop that rides freely in the blade and basically pushes the blade left and right. The oval plastic loop apparently got buggered just enough when it jammed that it now will not stay in place and the result is that the motor runs but the moving blade doesn't oscillate.Unfortunately, I'm having trouble figuring out how to return it, get repair work done, or anything like that so I may be stuck with a basically good device that doesn't work.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great timesaver
This order is the second pair I have purchased. This new pair is for an elderly relative, I also ordered the handle attachment for it for her. Before I gave that to her I tried it on my shears, that is probably going to be my next purchase. The shears are lightweight and they do hold their charge for at least 45 minutes. ... At only 12 amps, it's blower output will remove debris from between sidewalk and driveway cracks on the high setting. The maximum mph is 165 as published in the manual. The two piece blower tube joint is weak and will come apart when hard contact is made with the ground. The tube to blower seal leaks around the red lock button preventing entire blower output to be discharged thru the tube. There is no motor torque to overcome during use and is well balanced while blowing to reduce arm stress. Vacuum operation not evaluated. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

A six-power Briggs and Stratton Quantum motor powers this trimmer mower as it effectively and evenly trims tall weeds, sharp corners, and wet grass. The trimmer mower also excels on flat plots, hills, and other rough terrain alike.

The trimmer mower provides three cutting length options from 1-1/2 to 5 inches. An extended trimmer head permits the mower to reach grass under low-hanging bushes while simultaneously protecting users from flying debris. The trimmer also comes equipped with a head clutch to enable a safe, quick, and easy engine shutdown. The 14-inch ball-bearing rear wheels resist rust with a sturdy composite nylon construction as they help push the trimmer with a minimum of friction. The trimmer mower comes assembled with a complimentary oil supply. Troy-Bilt offers a limited lifetime warranty and a product registration program. This trimmer mower covers a width of 22 inches. --Jessica Reuling ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding in my field
I bought this mower to tackle my very rural West Texas property. It's very rocky land, covered by thick grass. "Finding" those rocks have ruined a regular mower. The Troy Bilt was everything I expected. It started easily, never choked on the tall grass, and all but ignored the rock. I didn't think I'd like the way it holds the trim line. (Two 18" strips that have to be replaced more often than my old line trimmer's spool). But in this case, the simple way is the best way. Fast and easy. No tools. No bump spool to disassemble and rewind, and no tangles. A bonus I wasn't counting on ... it does a fine job on a small suburban lawn too. Keeping the fence to the left side, I can cut and edge at the same time. Ditto for around poles and under lawn furniture. I've replaced my standard mower and hand held line trimmer.

1-0 out of 5 stars piece of junk
I was under the impression that this company produced quality tools and perhaps were better than Craftsman, so I ordered the 22 inch trimmer mower. The trimmer was delivered, and upon opening the box I noticed that the oil intake funnel was broken off at the top and loose from the connection to the engine.Because the box was not damaged I assumed it was a packing problem and a lack of quality control. The return of the item went smmothly. Amazon.com was very understanding and helpful.I requested a replacement.Upon receiving the replacement and looking and the terrible condition of the box, I immediately knew that something was going to be wrong with the replacement too.I opened the box and to my surprise, this trimmer mower also had the broken oil intake funnel.I immediately called UPS and requested that the mower be returned as not accepted due to damage.
Fool me once but not twice. It is obvious that quality control is not part of this company (Troy-Built).I will never ever buy a product from this company! They don't even deserve 1/2 a star. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Leaves Me Strung Out
I don't know how Toro can put their name on this thing. I have yet to get more than 8 seconds running time-and I'm working on grass- either the string breaks off or the extension cord falls out.
    Problem:
    1) The string is too light and breaks constantly.
    2) Unwinding more string usually requires removing and rewinding the spool first- because the spool is constantly jammed. The spool holder is cheap and has failed a number of times- sending the spool, spring, and holder flying off.
    3) The space for the power cord is too small for tabbed cords- so cords don't sit correctly and fall off with the slightest movement.

Toro's response to my complaints was basically, 'we've got your name and address if we recall the product."

1-0 out of 5 stars Flimsy plastic and bad handle design
The overall design and craftsmanship are so bad on this trimmer that I did not even try it on real grass after taking it out of the box and putting it together. The "180 degree" handle does not hold in place and trimming head turns out of position under its own weight when you turn it on. If you must buy an electric trimmer for light garden use, get a Ryobi TrimmerPlus. For about thirty more bucks you'll get a much sturdier and balanced tool, not to mention more powerful and attachment-capable.

1-0 out of 5 stars dissapointed
I just bought one of these, used it for the first time, and the trigger already broke. Lasted about 20 minutes. The power is OK, but with a sketchy trigger, what is the use. Buy something else. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Looks Good -- Hard to Start -- Runs Poor
I purchased this Edger Because of the TROY-BILT name. I was mistaken. This edger looks great but it ends there. This Troy-Bilt edger/trencher is hard to start, lacks power even though it is rated at 4.5HP and runs rough. If I could do this over, this Troy-Bilt would not be my choice for my edger.

5-0 out of 5 stars Looks to be a good edger choice...
I am focusing on this edger as the best edger in the MTD lineup.Consumer Reports just reviewed several (three literally) edgers and rated the MTD Yard Machines A25-A250 model (3.5hp, $199) as its top choice for dedicated edger. This Troy-bilt edger (4.5 hp B&S) appears to be the best of the MTD Corp choices (Troy-bilt, Yard Machines, Yard Man & MTD), convincing blade design, and with modest trencher capability.

I did not want a Tecumseh powered OPE as they are noisey, thirsty and environmentally unfriendly.Looked at Sears models...they look cheesy.I am aware of Little Wonder edgers, premium lawn-garden products, but they start at $400 (3.5hp B&S IIRC).
