5-0 out of 5 stars Great generator and easy to install yourself
I was a little apprehensive in deciding to install the Generac myself after reading some of the reviews. I took the plunge and found out that there was nothing to worry about. Before I bought it, I checked with my propane supplier and found out that the gas pressure their regulator supplies was within Generac's guidelines (11"-14" water column is pretty standard).

It took about 2.5 weeks to arrive after ordering it and came by ABF freight (semi truck). I was able to unload it from the truck with my tractor and pallet forks. I first had to convert it to propane with the supplied orifice, etc. which took about 40 min. I chose to pour a concrete pad which isn't required, but I thought it would be a more stable base. This took 3 hours.

Next was hanging the transfer box and running the pre-wired 30' BX conduit to the location where it will go through your wall. This took about 2 hours. Since I am running it on propane, I took advantage of the offer of a free upgrade to 15KW (nat. gas runs at 13KW) from Generac by calling their toll-free number. It was difficult to get through to a person (I had to lie to the automated answerer saying I wanted to be a Generac dealer), but once through, it was shipped free of charge within a week. This upgrade requires the swapping out of the 60A breaker on the generator with a supplied 70A and the replacement of the pre-wired 30' BX conduit and the conduit that goes between the generator and the external box with another that has heavier gauge wire for the additional amps. This switchover took 1 hour. Installing the external electrical box and wiring it up took an hour also.

Next, I had to run about 20' (with associated valves and fittings) of additional LP line from where mine left off in the house to the generator. This took me and a helper 6.5 hours.

The wiring of the designated emergency circuits was quite easy due to the color-coded, tagged wires that are supplied with the transfer switch. I removed the black wires from my existing breakers (and removed the breakers) and pigtailed them to the new wires/breakers in the transfer switch box. All of this wiring took 2 hours. I then followed all of the testing procedures checking voltages with a mulitimeter and performing the engine break-in (which takes about 4 hours). After the break-in, I changed the oil (with a required all-synthetic oil) and the filter and now it is ready to go!

If you are going to install this yourself prepare to spend about 18-20 hours, depending on how much gas line you have to run. Also, some things that you will have to buy that aren't really mentioned in the literature are: Automotive battery (550CCA min.) $58, 8' ground rod/cable $13, Circuit breaker that fits your existing breaker box to feed the transfer switch panel $20 (mine was Square-D which are expensive normally, but I got it on ebay), LP pipe/valves $50, Misc. conduit straps, etc. $5, Concrete pad (Quikcrete from Home Depot)$40. Total=$186

I have had some experience with wiring and construction and am generally handy with tools. If you have that general level of ability, this shouldn't be a problem for you. It sure beats the $900 that Home Depot wants to install it "professionally".

As far as quality goes, this thing is built like a tank. Everything looks and feels to be heavy duty. Case is weather proof and well thought out, generally. (I wish they would have a bigger battery compartment so I could have gotten a 600+CCA battery in, though) I was really worried about the noise; no need to be. I placed it near a window of the family room about 2' from the wall and only had to turn up the TV slightly when it was running. A low hum is what it sounds like through the wall. Outside, you don't have to shout to be heard while within 10' of it with all covers closed, but don't stay too close for too long with the top open and the front cover off because you could go deaf! This thing is loud without the sound attenuation afforded by the enclosure.

It had no problem powering everything that is hooked up to it during testing: Well pump, Heat Pump/AC, propane furnace, 2 sump pumps, 2 refrigerators, 1 deepfreezer, several lighting and outlet citcuits, TV/VCR, microwave, septic aerator/sump pump combination. The lights dimmed momentarily when the heat pump kicked in, but other than that, you can't tell you're "off the grid".

Now we're just waiting for the power to go out.

    Good Luck!

We've had this unit for almost 2 years now, currently, we are in the middle of our worst ice storm ever, and the electric has been down for over three days, the 15kw Guardian has been running nonstop. The temperature outside is near zero and we are nice and toasty warm inside, running virtually everything, heat, well pump, kitchen appliances, treadmill, garage door openers, lights, etc. This power outage which will last another week they say, but has caused barely a hickup for us in our daily routine, aside from shelling out the $45 or so in propane we are going through every day.Small price to pay for safety and normalcy.

2-0 out of 5 stars Generac Poor Quality
When my generator starts - it quits for several seconds and restarts. The company can't solve the problem and does not answer my letters.

This is a great smoke and CO alarm. It seems to be very sensitive to smoke...particularly when I burn toast. However, it has a convenient silencer button.I always change the battery every 6 months and have not had any problems with it.<br /> <br /> The other person who reviewed this didn't think it was loud enough...I think they need a hearing aid.

This is not and I repeat is not a good alarm. There is one alarm light and you can hardly tell which one is sounding. It looks as if the specs are lying to me and I hate lies. Also the battery died after 6-8 months. The low battery alert is loud and chirps so anoyingly. I also noticed that the alarm sounds a loud shrieking alarm when it sounds. I will return this alarm. Never again will I trust in First Alert! ... Read more

    Editorial Review

A reliable generator is essential gear for contractors, but it's also important for home owners, campers, RV enthusiasts and others who may face planned or unplanned power needs. The Generac 9777 4,000 watt extended-life generator is just such a tool. The generator is ideally suited for either occasional or everyday use. A rugged, 7.8-horsepower overhead valve industrial engine provides 4,000 watts of reliable electricity and up to 13.5 hours of use on a single four-gallon tank of fuel. The unit is versatile and easy to use, with two 20 amp 120V power outlets, one full-power 30 amp 120V twist lock outlet, and one full-power 20 amp 120/240V twist lock outlet. It also comes with charger cables for recharging 12V batteries. The engine runs quietly and is designed with several added smart features, including an oversized dual element air filter, an automotive-style oil filter, and full-pressure lubrication. It also features a pressurized low oil shutdown system, automatic idle control, and a power surge alternator that protects against power fluctuations when starting and operating several motor-driven items at the same time. --Carl Thress ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Generator (update)
During the hurricane Charley power outage my neighbor was kind enough to run an extension cord from his generator over to my house and saved all my food. The day we got power back I ordered the 9777 from Amazon with super saver shipping and $25 off promotion.Four days after I received it Hurricane Frances slammed the Florida East coast HARD.This little generator saved our bacon for three days while we were without power. The best thing I can say about it, and the reason I bought this item, is the fantastic fuel economy.I was getting between 3 and 5 hours per gallon while powering a freezer, refrigerator, fans, lights, television, coffee pot and using the built in 12 volt charging function. This compares to my neighbor with his gallon per hour usage. It started up every time with one or two pulls, has pressurized lubrication, an idle function switch and a built in 12 volt charger.I do agree with others that the little foot on the front of the unit could be beefier but still give it 5 stars because of the miserly fuel consumption.Do not underestimate this fact when looking for generators since gas was not available down here in Florida for several days after the hurricane passed.

After this was written Hurricane Jeanne hit us several weeks later.Again, this little generator ran flawlessly for several days powering all of the above plus the window air conditioner (Panasonic, see separate review) that I had purchased for just such an occasion.Fuel consumption was the same and all my neighbors with thier 5500 Watt overkill units were sure jealous of that.I still heartily recommend this generator.

3-0 out of 5 stars faulty oil pressure switch
WE bought this generator as a emergency power unit about 3 yrs ago.we have run it for a total of maybe 40 hours.the last time we used it,itran for 1hr. then shut down. would start right back then do it again. unit is full of oil.unpluged oil pressure switch now it will run. this unit is not very quiet but still quieter than some coleman generators.factory should include extra switch and symptoms of this problem in manual.

5-0 out of 5 stars Commercial Grade
I recently purchased my Generac 4000 EXL for my RV. ( Also for my home, in the event of rolling power black-outs.The product is very sound in design with big generator features at a economical price.I especially like the pressurized oil system for the engine as it will extend the life of the engine. The electric start is a "must have" for a portable generator. (even more so for a RV)The automatic idle control is great and helps with noise control. (The unit tends to be a little noisy when under a heavy load.) The generator is compact and can easily be stored in the RV.
I have found the generator to be able to handle all my power needs. Even when the AC unit is turned on the Generac 4000 handles the power needs without problems.
    One note:
I did purshase a three year service contract on the unit just to take care of any problems. So far I have had no problems with the unit.
I highly recommend this generator... ... Read more

    Editorial Review

Since it tips the scales at just 66 pounds, it’s incredible that this little unit can output 2,800 watts. Not only that, but it’s a good deal quieter than other generators in its class. The inverter system with Pulse Width Modulation delivers such a stable voltage that you can run products with built-in microcomputers or microcomputer-controlled electric tools off this generator. A nice innovation is the "Economy Control" electrical governor: It matches engine speed to the electrical demand, so if you’re camping and just running a CD player, the engine downshifts to supply that much power, again reducing noise to about 60 decibels. Plug in something else, and power increases accordingly. Another nice feature is the Oil Watch warning system that shuts the unit down before the oil is low, and won't let you restart until oil is added. Because it’s light, compact, and quieter, this is the ideal generator to keep on hand at home for power outages and a smart buy for the job site, too.--Kris Jensen-Van Heste ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Just don't get it.
You know what, I just don't get it.Why on earth would anyone spend over a thousand dollars on something without really knowing what they were getting.

You have the first reviewer that complained about not being informed about the need for a transfer switch.Well, I hate to say it, but you don't NEED a transfer switch. You only need a transfer switch if you want to connect it to your home's breaker panel. You must do that regardless of generator in order to meet the latest code standards. You could just as easily run extension cords. They also mentioned about not knowing the NEMA code for the locking plug.Off the top of my head, I believe I was told it was a NEMA L5-30.Funny, I was able to get the information.A quick call to Yamaha would have answered the question.

Then you have the person that complained about the generator not being 240V.First, no where do the specs read that it outputs 240V; it only specifies 120V.Second, the NEMA L5-30 is only for 120V up to a maximum of 30 amps.Third, you could always hardwire a cable from the transfer switch to a male plug for the generator. That's just one solution . . . there are others.Fourth, I clearly read on the website that Amazon would not accept returns.

I would agree that providing a manual online would be nice, but dinging Amazon or Yamaha for an individual's failure to adequately research a purchase is not the fault of Amazon or Yamaha.I called Yamaha with questions and they gladly answered.

All I'm saying is be fair with your review.

1-0 out of 5 stars UPSET WITH AMAZON
I was not familiar with generators and read all the specifications and technical information on Amazon. I also went to the Yamaha web site. I knew that I needed a transfer box (which was built into my house). After receiving the generator in record time, I had my electrician try to install it. It WAS THE WRONG Voltage 115 vs 220. I called Amazon and was told that I could not return it. No where on the description web site does it tell you that you can't return or exchange it for the proper unit. Amazon needs to place in big print CANNOT BE RETURNED. The product never left the box. I am very unhappy about this and now have a $1400 boat anchor.

3-0 out of 5 stars The generator specs and looks are fine, but....
No where in Amazon's presentation of this item is the fact that you will need an "isolation switch," also called a "transfer switch" at some stores. This is a [$$] item that allows you to switch off the electric power line from your utility company while you are using the generator to feed power to your home. This protects utility workers from electrocution that could occur if you backfeed electricity into the power grid.It protects your home circuits and appliances from overload when the utility power comes back on.Neither Amazon nor Yamaha mentions the fact that the Yamaha generator requires a particular locking plug for the AC output, and does not provide the NEMA number that you have to match when buying the power cord taking power out of the Yamaha to your home's electrical supply input.Yamaha's manual is ridiculously inadequate about how to set up this device, though the details for maintenance and safety seem pretty thorough. But you have to be able to use it, and using it requires a frustrating process just to know what parts to buy.And then there's the cost of an electrician to install the isolation switch. No plug-'n-play here. ... This detector looks good, I suppose it works, and it's simple to use.Just install the included 9 volt battery and plug it in.

It has a 5 year warranty and mine broke within a couple of weeks of my 5 year mark.I called Customer Service, they were nice and efficient, they didn't hassle me, and they sent me a new unit in less than a week.

If you don't want to worry about changing out the 9 volt battery periodically, buy a lithium 9 volt battery from costs about 4 times as much as an alkaline, but it'll last you 10 years. They're good for smoke detectors too.

5-0 out of 5 stars I can echo the positive reviews offered for this unit.
I'm extremely satisfied with this generator; it is amazingly quiet to run (we keep it secured in the truck bed and the cord reaches the power connection on our Airstream perfectly; the generator hums away and we're virtually unaware that it's running.) No complaints about what turned out to be a substantial wait for delivery - it's reasonable to expect a delay for a new product in high demand, both due to hurricane recovery needs at the time we ordered it and the fact that it's a great unit.

5-0 out of 5 stars One Great Machine!
This generator is state of the art. It is built like a good car or personal watercraft if you know what I mean. It looks good on the outside and when you open the service panels you can tell the quality. It is extremely quiet, clean/steady power and has built-in handles and wheels. The old saying "you get what you pay for" is definitely true here. I was buying the cheap $400-600 generators available everywhere and they would last six to twelve months. Buy this one and you won't be wasting your money as I did before I learned an expensive lesson. Most folks know Yamaha has become one of the names you can trust and this generator is no exception. I've even nicknamed mine "R2D2", pretty lame I know. :)

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Camping Jenny
I don't know why some of you insist on reviewing the delivery practices of instead of the product. First I must ask if you remember the hurricane season of 2004 and the blackout up north before that.... It put a serious strain on Jenny suppliers in the entire country.

This is one of the best small Jennys I have ever used, and I have used several. I use it camping in the wilderness and run it for days on end. I used it to power my entire house (except AC) after hurricane Ivan knocked out power for a few days. Every time I go camping someone will stop and ask me about it. It is so quiet it draws attention. It starts and runs like a dream. I have had good luck with several Yamaha products, and this one is great too.I don't understand the other reviewer that had trouble with powering their AC, perhaps their AC has issues, mine powers my 15K BTU AC fine. The fuel economy is good and it will run for 12-14 hours without the AC on and about six with it on. I saw this unit at the RV super Show in Tampa yesterday and it had a show price several hundred higher than Amazon ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for tailgating.
My wife always said she prefered staying at home and watching the games on TV to going to the stadium. Now she can have the best of both worlds!

Seriously though; When I first got my season tickets I resolved to pick up a couple of items a year to enhance the tailgating experience. My wife got me the Fire and Ice grill for Christmas and I picked up the Xantex Power Inverter and then went shopping for an inexpensive TV at a yard sale.We used to bring a small set designed to keep kids occupied on long road trips and had to sit in the cab of my truck leaning together to watch.(OK for me and my wife, akward for me and my brother, downright unnerving for me and a friend of mine)Well, No more!!I can't wait to set up this baby with a 20" plus screen in the back. Here's hoping for more late games this year so I can enjoy freezing in a parking lot watching the early game with large quantities of grilled meat!

We bought this power inverter to power our daughters nebulizer and a t.v. and playstation for the kids on road trips. The only problem we had with it is when your using over 150 watts power you are supposed to hardwire it.That requires additional wiring.Other than that it is an excellent product at an excellent price!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Survived the North East blackout
It couldn't be a better time. Yesterday noon I got the X-Power 400 delivered by UPS, and in few hours it was put to its ultimate test. Yes we were hit by the 08/14 Thursday North East Blackout. But with the help of the X-Power 400, I was able to hookup the 13"TV and Dish receiver. Enought to spend the restof the evening siting in the desk and watching the CNN news update and TV programs with family and friends.I love the cigrette adapter and the battery clips.

I used the battery clips to get power from my car battery.

I recommend X-Power 400 for any regular household use. If you are planning to operate power tools, I suggest get the 700 or above.

This 400 is smart, small in size packed with all the energy to keep your entertainment rolling without any interrruption. My original intention to use my Laptop on my roadtrips, but this proved to be much more useful than just powering the laptop.

4-0 out of 5 stars An essential accessory for any gasoline generator
I didn't think it could happen to me. My generator was on an open patio, open on two sides. It was four days after Francis passed, we had no power, and we had still air that night.

But the exhaust built up on the back porch and leaked through closed doors into the house. We turned off the generator, and aired the house out - we felt better fairly quickly.

Then I went to the hardware store and bought a CO detector - B00002N86A is the ASIN of the one I bought. We could not wait for Amazon, sorry, we had to have it that day. We decided on that one because of the digital read out and the fact that it would run on a battery if there was no generator power.

Don't run a generator without one - and think about ventilation. A generator can run a couple box fans easily.

We ended up using an old junker box fan to blow on the generator - it kept it cooler and it dispersed the exhaust even if there was no breeze - then we used another box fan, a new one, to blow air into the house through a window. Once we did that, the CO detector never detected any.

I received this generator from Amazon, prepared it per the included instructions, cranked it up, and immediately realized that it has two big problems: Voltage is only 107V, and it started making a gawdaful screeching sound after running for about 60 seconds. Screeching seems to be coming from the genset itself (not the engine), possibly indicating a bad bearing in the generator. Not good!

The fact that it made it out of the factory in this condition tells me that Porter Cable is doing a poor job of Quality Assurance. Also since I bought it from Amazon rather than a local retailer, I obviously can't take it back to the store for an exchange...I am forced to lug this heavy thing to the nearest factory service center. In retrospect, I might have been better off buying it locally.

Just to post a follow-up, I took the generator to the local authorized repair shop and they fixed it up. Something in the generator housing had been installed backwards at the factory. At any rate, it sounded like it was a very easy fix and they didn't even charge for the repair, although it would have been covered under warranty anyway. I've now owned the generator for close to a year and used it several times, and it has been absoultely trouble-free. Despite the initial hassle, I am very happy with this generator and would add a few stars if Amazon's review system allowed this. In retro-retrospect, the money I saved buying at Amazon was worth the hassle of a trip to the repair shop. If I had bought locally I still would have had to lug it back to the store.

Even though it doesn't have all the features that they advertise, it is a good generator. They advertised it as having an hour meter and full power switch. It has neither. I did a lot of research, (weeks) on different generator features before purchasing this one. So when I did get it and it didn't have all the features that it was supposed to, I was disappointed.
But, If you're looking for using primarily 120 volts, this is the one for you. It has (2) 20 amp GFCI duplexes- (four grounded plug-ins) Plus it has a Nema L5-30 amp 120 volt plug-in. I purchased a 10 gauge extension cord that plugs in to the L5-30 Nema and on the other end it has 2 duplexes. This gives me 8 grounded plug-ins. total. Of course you still can't go over the 62.5 maximum constant rated amps while doing so. It does have a large surge rating of 10,750 watts, 89 amps for motor starting power
The engine started on the first pull as it should, and ran great. The Vanguard engine is supposed to be Briggs & Stratton's best engine. The Idle control works great too.
I would recommend downloading the PDF manual on any generator before purchasing. And then carefully compare all the features to their advertisement.I noticed many advertising mistakes on a lot of different generators out there.
Comparing power to price, this generator is hard to beat! ... Read more
