Editorial Review

Stay prepared and informed with the FR 200 from Grundig. If the power goes out and batteries aren't available, the FR 200 can function for up to an hour with only one minute of hand cranking. Its built-in generator means that even in the most desperate situations, you'll still have access to local news and information--as well as to news from around the world. The unit's four-band tuning receives AM, FM, SW1 (shortwave 1), and SW2 stations, and an included rechargeable battery pack provides reliable, renewable, internal power for everyday use.

The radio houses a 2.5-inch speaker. A .125-inch stereo headphone jack affords private listening, a built-in touch light comes in handy during lights-out emergencies, and you can dial in hard-to-tune stations with the unit's dedicated fine-tuning knob. A 4.5V DC jack allows an external power connection (power adapter not included).

A 360-degree telescope antenna provides the best radio signal for FM and SW, while a built-in AM antenna provides high sensitivity for AM reception. The FR 200 can run on three LR6 or AA batteries. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Broadcast Rx Only-OK quality
I'm a communications engineer & have designed radios This one is intended to be used for broadcast reception.Forget SSB or CW.It does drift a bit - but that is in part a result of trying to minimize power consumption (and cranking).I was impressed by the fact that the antenna is properly matched nearly everywhere in the SW band (as evidenced by the fact that touching the antenna does NOT increase signal volume. If you see that effect - the antenna is mismatched and your sensitivity is poor.Doubt me? connect an antenna 'matchbox' (impedance matcher) between an equivalent length of wire to the standard radio mounted antenna and such a radio - either use the ext antenna connections or collapse the stock antenna and use a clip. Now tune the matchbox for maximum background noise (indicating more RF is getting into the radio).Tune around and you'll then hear 3 times the number of signals that you heard with the standard radio mounted antenna. The ones you could hear before are now much louder too.A "Freeplay" radio is a typical example of this antenna matching design error. The Grundig is much smaller, lighter, runs (i believe) longer than the freeplay for an equiv amount of cranking, is half the price and more sensitive (on HF).(The Freeplay drifts too btw - i have 2 of them). If you want a no drift single sideband or CW radio get a AOR 3000.At $1000, it's out of the price range of the Grundig. It also doesn't have a crank. Why?the synthesized and microprocessed circuitry of the AOR draws WAY too much power - you'd need a treadmill, not a handcrank. The flashlight is handy, but not a substitute for a proper flashlight (torch). You can find the radio in the dark in a shelter..it's making noise. You can then find the flashlight..(it's built into the radio) - using it you can then find your 3 D cell Kleig light. This is a low price emerg radio built to fill a specific need - which imho it does quite well.. It is NOT the equiv of a $1000 - $3000 communications receiver.I own a couple of those too, being in the emergency comms/homeland defense business. They have their places too - but one has to consider what class of equipment one is dealing with - and for what it was designed.

5-0 out of 5 stars I want to make a correction!
I wish to correct an earlier statement about this product!I mistakenly suggested that this product was garbage, turns out that Radio Shack gave me the wrong AC Adapter plug not once but twice.

The problem has since been corrected and the radio works fine!I highly recommend this product and take back any earlier comment.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed with performance
No, the FR200 is not an expensive radio, but I expected more from any product Grundig was willing to put its brand name on. I bought this radio to have with me when I was working in the yard, fishing, etc. The problem is that it drifts off frequency so badly and in such a short period of time that I have to keep it nearby to keep adjusting it. I guess there is a lot of truth to the adage that you get what you pay for. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice Radio For The Money
I own an older version of this radio and use it in my office. It has good reception and is a nice unit for the money. I have owned it for about 6 years with no complaints.

1-0 out of 5 stars Rewind Defective
I own this radio. My only disappointment is that it does not rewind my cassettes. The motor gears sound like they are slipping. I only used the rewind twice. Because I use this radio frequently, I have adapted to this defect by flopping the cassette around and pressing "fwd" in order to accomplish a rewind.

2-0 out of 5 stars No headphone jack
I was sadly surprised to discover when I opened the box that this radio cassette recorder has no headphone jack. I didn't know any company still made radios that way!It went back to the store. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars More clock, please!
I like this radio a lot. It has good sound, maybe even a bit too rich for when I'm trying to doze off. It doesn't take up a lot of space on the bedside table. It looks quite "now-tro" (see "A Mighty Wind" if you don't know what I mean) with its wood sides and aero shape. It makes a lovely yellow glow. And I love the "humane" alarm that gets gradually louder.

My 2 quibbles:

1. It's hard to tell the buttons apart by feel, so it takes me longer than I'd like to turn off the alarm.

2. After the radio has been on for a few seconds, I'd really like it if the display changed from the tuner to the clock. I don't like having to look somewhere else for the time. But I'm getting used to it. I'll be OK, don't worry.

5-0 out of 5 stars Q Radio and LCD Problem
I have had this radio for over a year, and I like it a lot.But it did have the problem described in an earlier review, in that the LCD display failed after a year and the radio became unusable.Sangean USA replaced the radio even though it was out of warranty, which was great, but was also a indication that the radio has a recurrent problem.I am planning to buy another one, but wanted to assure that the problem would not recur.I emailed Sangean, and they acknowledged the problem in earlier production units. They say it has been fixed for later production units, so according to Sangean the design problem has been resolved.

3-0 out of 5 stars Sangean PR-D2 , Not bad, Not great
This radio looks great. I really liked the style. However, that's about all I really liked. Another reviewer compared the sound to the Bose Wave radio. Either they've never heard the Bose or they were just really happy with the price comparison. At high volumes the radio sounds ok but at lower volumes it sounds like it play from inside a cardboard box. I could live with that but my real disappointment was with the tuning. I live in the mountains where radio reception is difficult. Usually "PLL Synthesized Digital Tuning for rock stable reception of AM/FM" is exactly that. In this radio the tuning is stable but the reception was worse than other cheap dial tuning radios that I own. Often raising the antenna made the reception even worse. I really wanted to like this radio but it's just lacking in too many areas. The clock vs frequency display feature is another really bad idea. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Fair Radio Is Worth the Money for Casual Radio Needs
For the price, the Panasonic 2400 is worth it, that is, if you have no special reception needs. The AM/FM sensitivity is fair and adequate, not great. Separation of stations is only fair so if you have a lot of competing AM stations you may not like this radio and may want to buy, for seventy dollars more, the Grundig S350. But if your AM station is strong and doesn't have interference, you'll probably be happy with the 2400. Its best feature is its speaker, three inches big and superior to the speaker on my 79-dollar Sony SW35. For someone who is a bit of a fanatic about radios like myself, I cannot recommend the 2400. With its weak separation, I just cannot warm up to it. I would rather spend more money on the aforementioned Grundig S35 or 130 dollars on the Tivoli PAL or evenover two hundred dollars on the Sangean 909. But that's me. If you're just a casual radio listener, the Panasonic 2400 is worth the price. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Sangean makes some amazing portable radios, and the SR-1 seals thecompany's reputation for packing high-quality sound components into the smallestpossible space. Measuring only 3 inches high by 1.5 inches wide and 0.5 inchesdeep, the miniscule radio requires only one AAA battery to pump out hours of FMor AM sound.

The SR-1 comes with a pair of earbud headphones, but to really see what theradio can do you need to attach a pair of quality headphones to it. It canamplify the signal to amazing levels with no distortion, and the DBB (Deep BassBoost) feature really comes into play when the SR-1 is connected to headphonesthat can handle the resulting low-frequency boost.

Perhaps the most amazing thing about the radio is its outstanding reception. Wetested the unit all over the place and it was able to pull in signals in abasement office that other radios couldn't even pick up outside. We were able tocrisply tune in stations with the dial control, but there's no digital tuner, and not having the ability to store and instantly recall stations can be a drag. The other big downside to the SR-1 is that it uses headphones to augment thebuilt-in antenna, and reception suffers greatly when headphones aren't pluggedinto the unit. Fortunately, there's a bypass switch on the side that lets youlisten to music through the built-in speaker even if headphones are attached.

To be honest, the built-in mono speaker doesn't sound so hot, so you'll bemissing out on a lot if you don't plan to use headphones. If you can live withthat limitation--and the fact that you can't pick up the weather or TVbands--the SR-1 is an excellent little radio that delivers sound quality and receptionthat is far out of proportion to its size. --T. Byrl Baker

Pros:

  • Extremely compact
  • Great reception
  • Excellent sound quality and volume

Cons:

  • Included earbud headphones don't do justice to the unit

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Tiny Radio Available
The SR-1 is a great package combining good sensitivity and selectivity with good audio in a featherweight package. AM & FM reception are both quite good (although the ear buds are needed for FM since the wire serves as the antenna) with the ability to pick up AM stations several hundred miles away at night. The internal speaker sounds good considering the tiny size of this radio, but it's not room filling sound. The ear buds sound decent, but as other reviewers have stated there are better options available... but I'd only recommend it for music as news / sports sounds fine with the set provided. The only ergonomic problem with this radio is that it is hard to use some of the controls with the radio in its supplied pouch. Battery life is great and it only uses a single AAA cell.

Overall I'd highly recommend this radio as a take anywhere means of staying in touch with what's going on or to listen during a commute. It has been recently discontinued by Sangean so act fast if you're interested and find one still in stock.

4-0 out of 5 stars Almost perfectly designed
I've had this product for over 8 months and would like to say that it has been the best little radio I've owned. However, like all portables, the headphone jack is starting to warp and the connection to the headphones is starting to lose coherence. For some strange reason, Sangean placed the power switch right next to the headphone jack so that every time you switch the radio on or off, you have to swivel the headphone jack out of the way. This incessant wear is the reason why the connection is starting to deteriorate.I wish Sangean (and other manufacturers) would address the inherent problems with the placement of headphone jacks because I have always encountered this problem.Otherwise, the AM reception is great and FM is good, no problems.

4-0 out of 5 stars For the price/utility, a nifty product
I bought this because I wanted an extremely small radio with both AM/FM reception that was almost credit card sized for use on commuting trips on Amtrak.Overall, I am pleased, and at the price point--quite pleased. It runs on one AAA battery for a long time (replaced once in 1 year). It is small enough to hide in an inappropriate location (say, a classical concert) to hear a game :).Surprisingly good FM sound through the earbuds--the small speaker is not very useful.

Small downsides: uncomfortable, hard earbuds--recommend replacements with anything compatible; paint on radio case easily rubs off; and due to the size, analog tuning is trial and error.A digital tuner with presets would be a plus--but I note that similar sized radios with that feature are almost 2X in price.Overall, a very good, very small, low-power, "hideable" personal radio. ...
