Editorial Review

As its name implies, the Handi-Clamp is a handy tool to have around when you need to hold a work piece securely in place while working on it. The lightweight clamp squeezes into place easily and holds fast. Non-marring pads grip the work surface tightly, without damaging it. And a quick-release trigger on the handle makes it easy to remove or readjust the clamp as needed--no screwing, twisting, or tightening, just squeeze and clamp down. A larger, 4-inch version of the Handi-Clamp is available for clamping thicker materials, too. Rule number one in a workshop: You can't have too many clamps. --Carl Thress ... Read more

Features

  • Non-marring swivel pads protect work pieces
  • Jaws are designed to reach around odd shapes
  • One-handed operation is a major convenience
  • Quick release trigger lets you remove the clamp without hassle
  • Non-slip handles guarantee grip

1-0 out of 5 stars Clamps that do not hold
1 star is too many if you want to use these as clamps!
I have a set of these clamps that I bought thinking they looked handy. They are handy, but if you want them to hold something in place you can not let go of the grips. Every time I have used them I want to squeeze them to one more notch on the ratchet. So far I have not found a good use for these clamps except to keep extension cords coiled and separate.

1-0 out of 5 stars Good concept, poor execution
I have had two of these clamps for a few years now. They are as easy and convienient to use as the positive reviews describe, yet I hardly ever use them. They simply won't retain enough clamping pressure for most uses. As soon as I release the handles, about 80%-90% of the pressure disappears. Since basic spring clamps are just as easy to use, hold better and are much less expensive, I see no reason to buy this clamp. If I lost mine, I don't think I would ever miss them.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent in some applications.
As noted in some of the other reviews, these clamps do not apply that much pressure. As such, they do not work well (or at all)for some applications. When I used them to secure pieces to a workbench for chiseling, they would lose their grip after a limited number of strokes.

That said, these clamps work very well in other situations.I find that these are the best clamps for securing plywood to sawhorses when cutting with a jig or circular saw. They can be applied and removed within seconds, speeding up the work flow immensely. These clamps would be worth purchasing for that application alone. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars good, not great tool
Generally well designed, using it every day showed the weak rewind knob. Plastic shaft snapped. Drilled a eighth inch hole in the lever, used a 3/4" #6 machine screw and locking nut to hold the knob and it should last a lifetime. The nylon string also doesn't hold as much chalk for repeat snaps without a rewind but I trade that for its other advantages.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great chalk line!
I bought this chalk line since we were doing a major reroofing project and needed to snap every other row to keep things straight. For the first part of the roof, we used a cheap aluminum chalk line with cotton string and had to change the string every so often because it frayed. Also, the string would get stuck inside the box and be difficult to pull out (it even broke once). The new Tajima had no such problems. It does take a little while to get used to the difference in string - the Tajima nylon string is thinner and stretchier than the cheap line. But it makes fine, distinct lines. Also, the Tajima blue chalk seems to be finer than standard blue chalk and it makes a sharp line and probably aids in the ease of pulling the string. The string recoils fast when you wind it up.The plastic-covered metal end on the string where you attach it to things works well. This tool seems to hold a lot of chalk (or maybe uses less per snap), so it doesn't need refilling very often. It also looks good - a pretty red color but the case does scratch a bit when dropped from the second story and the paint has rubbed off at the edges from frequent use.Overall, we have been very satisfied with the Tajima Chalk-Rite.

1-0 out of 5 stars money better spent elsewhere
I have had many chalk lines over the past twenty years of doing construction and for the money I expected this to be the Mercedes of chalk lines and although it is very "cool looking" it frankly works no better then any of the other chalk lines I have owned. Considering I could by almost six of those cheap plastic ones for what I payed for this (and they do just as good a job), I would say save your money and spend it on something else. I also want to say I was fooled into believing this is a Japanese tool when it is not, it is just a company using a Japanese name on a China import. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Need a reliable straight line without spending a bundle? This is our choice. Granted, this laser’s not self-leveling, but it’s easy to level and does produce a dead-on accurate horizontal or vertical line. It attaches easily to a wall with either the magnetic hanging pin or the included drill anchor wall mounts. Because it’s a single pin hanger, adjustments are as easy as the touch of a finger. Nice storage bag keeps the tool clean and protected. Just the right tool for the homeowner who’s adding a chair rail, wallpaper border, shelving, cabinets, tile, or a host of other projects. You could spend more for a self-leveling unit, but we think this suits most homeowner’s needs.--Kris Jensen-Van Heste ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Poorly designed, poorly engineered.
The purpose of this tool is to project a relatively long and straight laser line for alignment, construction, or what have you.As an engineer and general fan of Black and Decker's products, I was sadly surprised to find out that this product is neither useful or accurate.

The good news:
It runs on a 9v battery (cheap and easy to replace).Comes with two different mounting options in addition to the magnetic base.

The bad news:
1. The line is inconsistently bright along it's projected path.It seems about 2 to 3 times brighter in the center than on the far edges. This effect is disturbing because it's also thicker in the center. At the edges, the line is so dim that you need enhancement glasses (sort of like safety glasses, but red in color) to see it OR you have to use it in near total darkness.

2. The bubble levels inside the unit are too small, inaccurate, and not adjustable. When I placed this unit on my tablesaw (which was precisely aligned and leveled) it shows (incorrectly) that the saw is tilted about 2-3 deg. This is a huge problem and makes the unit difficult to justify. The owner's manual says that the levels are only calibrated to the laser line when held or hung up against a vertical surface.Okay, but what if you want to lay tile, place a fencepost, or align cabinets?

3. Mounting the laser to the wall requires drilling a hole. The base for wall mounting requires a small hole in the wall and as you rotate the base, three prongs expand out, temporarily locking the base to the wall. It's a pretty good system, but other manufacturers have systems that allow vertical surface use without drilling. It'd be a hassle to have to fill and paint the little holes constantly.

4. The bonehead that designed this did NOT for some unknown reason, make the sides square. So you cannot simply lie it on either side and expect a horizontal line...I'm lost on this one.Miserable engineering at it's worst.

In short, this unit is really only good at projecting a straight line.YOU have to level that line.Get a plumb bob or a 4' level, set this up and adjust the line it projects to level, then you're set. But, on the other hand, if you have a 4' level and plumb bob, all this unit provides is a simple, straight line, confirming your measurements.

Pros: Small, simple, 9V common battery power supply.Comes with case.

Cons: Not self-leveling.Must use other tools to adjust.Case not square.Cannot project line from a horizontal surface.

Even on sale for $20, it's hard to justify this product. It really only projects a line...and not even a straight one.A straight edge would work as well.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not what you think it is...
"It's my favorite tool" or so I told my kids when they gave it to me for my birthday. In reality, it is a basic laser pointer in a fancy package.Yes, it produces a straight laser line on the wall or floor, but you need to use a manual level to get it correct. It is difficult to hang on the wall and cannot be done without putting a small nail hole in a spot where you probably don't want one.Spend the extra money and buy a better mounting, self leveling and more accurate one if you need things to be absolutely perfect.

1-0 out of 5 stars Door Stop
This is the BIGGEST waste of money there is. I can eye a better level line than this thing. It doesn't give you a level line until you use a real level, to level it???? whats the point??? Save your money. This thing makes a better door stop than a laser level. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars New Style Case
We all know how great Stabila levels are, right? But there has been some talk about the quality of the cases. 2 or 3 years ago Stabila had nylon cases that were a little wimpy. This new case is a canvas exterior with a padded, soft interior. This case is far superior to the old style and my company has been very pleased with them. Those of you who have read my reviews know that I have tons of Stabila, including cases, these new cases are very good.

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
The only levels I own are Stabilas. In the past, I had been so disgusted with various non-Stabila levels (particularly M-D, or Mecklenburg-Duncan) that I once threw one (a M-D) into a freshly poured concrete retaining wallfor additional reinforcement. When you pay that kind of money for aStabila level, the idea of purchasing a case to protect it is verytempting.Over the years, during various promotions at various supplyhouses, I have received cases free with my purchase of Stabila levels. Well, save your money.Just pulling out the level and replacing it at theend of the day wore out the case within two weeks, and I was very careful. The exterior of the case fell apart almost as quickly and the zipper wasn'tfar behind. The nylon became very brittle so there was no way of repairingthe case.Very disappointing for a company that is known for a fabulousproduct line, unsurpassed in quality and without question the best in itsfield.I suggest what carpenters and many others such as tile setters do -buy a 3" or 4" diameter 4' to 8' length of ABS (or PVC) pipe, cap one endand put a threaded adapter with a threaded cap on the other. ... Reviews (4)

4-0 out of 5 stars Pump Jack Brace
Works as advertised, but there are a couple of shortcomings which are related and may not affect many people.

First, the span between the attachment points is 32" based on the assumption that they will be used with 16" stud spacing.Since I was working high on the gable end of my house, I was attaching to the end roof truss which has 24" spacing between verticals. My solution was to make an adapter out of a 2x4 which would fit between the brace and the house.

Second, the two mounting holes at each attachment point are 3" apart which means they can't both be used to attach to a horizontal 2x4 (ie: the adapter mentioned above).I had to drill an aditional hole between the two existing holes on the brace so I could mount each side with two screws.

Since I pre-drilled the holes on the side of the house, I was able to mount them by myself with no problem.I was able to hold the brace with one hand and insert the screw with the other while standing on a ladder. They're not very heavy and since the attachment points swivel, the braces hang down while you're attaching them. The only part of the job I found intimidating was handling the heavy poles (22 feet long in my case) while standing way up there.

It turned out that the 30" length was fine for my particular job, but they would certainly be more versatile if they were adjustable as mentioned by the other reviewers.

3-0 out of 5 stars Does the trick, but could be better
I agree somewhat with the other reviewer - this brace should be longer to provide more space between the platform and the building. However, the brace works as it is supposed to, and if your trim doesn't extend too from from the outside of your building then the platform will clear. Also, attaching the brace to the house is a two-person job generally - one to hold the brace, the other to drive screws. This means you need two ladders at least as tall as your Pump Jack pole to set this brace.

5-0 out of 5 stars Safety First
A previous reviewer lamented the length of the brace.OSHA has a maximum recommended distance from the edge of the scaffolding to the work, which would be exceeded if the brace were longer. It makes sense. My kit worked perfectly for me, and will for you, if you follow the directions. It's just your neck!!! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars stanley tools
Stanley tools will always be held in high regard. If you look after this equipment it give good service for years.

4-0 out of 5 stars Solid tool with a few rough edges
This is a solidly built block plane that will give you years of service once you spend a little time and tune it up right.Nearly every plane made requires some fine adjustment out of the box so that should not be considered a negative when purchasing this item.

The cap iron may need a little lapping at the front bottom to fit smoothly against the plane iron. The blade comes with a serviceable factory edge but I honed mine nonetheless.Check the blade for flatness and lap the back if necessary. The bottom of the plane should be checked for flat and the sides for square before you commit to using this on your finer projects.

Again, most planes need this kind of tuneup as they come out of the box.The only fault I have with this plane is that the rear adjustment screw has a bit too much free play (a sixteenth of an inch) between the adjustment screw collar and the blade adjustment.I fixed that by disassembling the mechanism and fitting a brass shim around it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Plane insane if you don't have one!
I held off buying a plane for a long time. How foolish! This little plane has saved me lots of sandpaper, and it's really fun to use. I shaved the high spots off of some old drawers that I had to install some slides on, and took some layers of paint off the edges of some old cabinet doors. The old paint was really tough to get off the bottom of the plane, since I didn't have any solvent. I finally tried spraying a little carburetor cleaner on it and it came off pretty easily.

If you haven't used a plane before, this is a good one to start with. It takes a bit of practice to adjust it properly, but it's easy to tell when you get it right. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good scaffold up to 3 feet
This is a good medium-duty portable scaffold. It comes pre-assembled, with you only needing to set the platforms in place, and tighten the locking knobs. It appears well constructed, and the platforms themselves are extremely strong. However, the scaffold suffers a bit from a slight lack of lateral stability. There are no braces in the front (it is open), and no diagonal braces in the back. This means the welds provide the lateral stability, which is adequate at all heights except for the very top. This may not be an issue for lighter people than myself (I weigh 290).The scaffold is rated to 400 lbs, so even my weight should not be an issue. The castors are large, lock easily, and roll easily.Overall, this is a good scaffold, and I would buy it again. With a little ingenuity, you could probably fashion up some type of diagonal brace for the back, which would make it very stable when the platforms are on the top rungs.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice, but there is one thing you should know
I bought this scaffold largely based on the reviews and it does fold well & have nice features. One point I would differ on with the other reviews, I would not call this scaffolding light weight! Check out the shipping weight on this before you buy.

The fact is the folding frame is light but the planks are more weight then I wanted to add to the many tools I already carry around. I decided to keep it because I'm sure I'll find occasions to use it but I also had to consider the 95lb shipping cost to return it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Read the instructions
Been using it for about 6 months. When I first got it I tore off the cardboard holder without reading the directions for changing the blades and had the same problems as many have posted. Once I found out how to use it, it works great every time. Blade changes are easy and reversing the blade is extrememly quick and simple. The blade always retracts completely. If you buy it, read the instructions!

Eric and I have the same idea. The knife is great, hands down best I've ever used. Ok so you cant change the blade in 5 seconds, but I can in well under a minute while on the cell phone. So all you guys who are construction workers who cant work a utility knife I really feel sorry for you and your companys. In order to have the blade all the way down so you do not cut yourself press the yellow button and push the new blade down until the second rivet catches. Also the knife is very comfortable, can hold up to like 8 blades for storage and fits in knife sheaths great even with its 'L' shape. One minus is the string cutter, pretty much worthless.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not perfect, but if you pay attention, it is well worth it.
I have had this knife for about three years now and use it constantly... A boss I had a couple years ago saw me changing a blade one day and wanted t osee it... I showed it to him and he liked it so much, he went and bought 3 or 4 for the shop. ALL of them worked PRECISELY the same as mine. It's so perfectly simple to change blades, it's downright silly, BUT... there is a catch...

This tool has one GLARING flaw... It's simply not immediately obvious how to PROPERLY operate it to change blades. However, I have it down pat, so follow along and learn...

To remove a blade, it takes three steps...

1) Push the slider button down and forward ALL the way to the front until it stops (three position stops)...

2) Now, PRESS the slider button down and press forward... it will click and stay down.

3) FIRMLY press on the yellow release button with your thumb and grasp the blade and withdraw it...

To insert a new blade...

1) PRESS AND HOLD the yellow button and grasping blade with thumb and forefinger of opposite hand, insert blade into tool and push all the way back until it stop moving (there should be little or no resistance.

2) RETRACT the blade normally.

Notes:

1) If you try to insert a blade WITHOUT PRESSING AND HOLDING THE YELLOW BUTTON, the blade will pop the lock into place and the blade will not fit into the tool.

2) If when the blade is inserted and the slider is all the way back, if the blade sticks out any at all, then the blade is NOT installed correctly. Follow the steps to remove the blade and try inserting it again, and BE SUER to push it all the way back before releasing the yellow button. If you do this properly, you will have NO problems.

Having used a number of these knives, I assure EVERYONE, if you do these steps PRECISELY as described, this knife works perfectly every time!!! It really is JUST THAT SIMPLE! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars These are money well spent!
The previous reviews are correct - these are good chisels at an amazing price.Though I am mostly a power tool guy, I do use chisels a lot for fine tuning mortises, paring tenons, flush trimmimg dowel plugs, etc.I have found that these chisels hold an edge for a good while.Do they hold an edge as long as a 200 dollar set?Of course not, but if you are willing to sharpen a bit more often you can save a LOT of money by buying these chisels. The handles are reliably strong. If I need extra force I always strike my handles with a rubber mallet.I previously owned the six piece set of these chisels. When they were stolen, I decided that the box was not worth much (it is not all that nice) and that for a lot less money I could do without the extra 2 chisels. So I bought this 4 piece set and found it to be a good decision - I don't miss the other two at all!

Buy these - they are inexpensive and a VERY good value for the money.

5-0 out of 5 stars best bang for your buck
There simply isn't a better value to be found than these. They sharpen well, and hold an edge well. The handles are very comfortable and durable.I've been working with wood for 15 years, it's currently how I make a living, and I rely on these for the majority of my chisel work. However, SHARPEN THEM FIRST.A dull chisel is a dangerous chisel, and even though IRWIN claims these are already "honed and ready for use" they aren't.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great set for a beginner
I'm a new woodworker and I needed a set of chisels to get things rolling. After reading some reviews, I decided on this set. At the price, they're a great deal and they've been very useful around the shop. I've also been practicing dovetails with them without any problem. I just need to learn how to sharpen them! Some have complained that they weren't very sharp out of the box. That might be true but I haven't noticed. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I couldn't have said it better
I was going to write a review of the Bessey cabinet clamps but I read what Alan Freedman said and I couldn't have said it better. So, to use Alan Freedman's comments (which I totally agree with)....

WHY YOU SHOULD BUY THEM: These are best clamps for squaring up a cabinet side/face frame ever. They work great standing up on a workbench. I consider them an invaluable part of my woodworking shop.

THE OTHER STUFF: These are not the end all. I still use my jorgenson clamps a lot. They apply point pressure (versus even pressure across the face of the clamp) which can be useful for truing up some jobs and clamping some irregular surfaces. The Bessey clamps are pretty heavy which can be ackward when clamping with one hand (and using the other hand to hold the project together).

THE BOTTOM LINE: You can never have too many clamps. I would not have less than a pair of the Bessey clamps in my shop. Four are better.

5-0 out of 5 stars these are great clamps
My only complaint is the price, but you get your money's worth. I plan to pick up a few more of these sometime in the future. The faces give you square pressure against the stock, which I find really important for edge gluing and cabinet building. I keep a little pressure on the heads for storage. The one time I did not I rotated the clamp head vertically and the clamp body slid down pinching my hand on the way down.

5-0 out of 5 stars Makes Woodworking an Absolute Pleasure!
My husband has been using his grandfather's pipe clamps for years. After doing extensive research, he finally decided to invest in some Bessey's.Needless to say, it's made his woodworking pasttime even more enjoyable. In fact, he liked these so well that he bought a second, identical set. These clamps are well worth the money! ... Editorial Review

If you're tired of damaging saw blades or drill bits on hidden nails, screws, and staples in walls, concrete slabs (rebar), or recycled wood, you'll want to add a Little Wizard metal detector to your toolbox. Similar to a stud locator (but more powerful and calibrated to locate metal), the Little Wizard can pinpoint the exact location of metal buried up to 2 inches deep. It's easy to use, weighs very little (just 5.7 ounces), and is small enough to fit in even the tightest spaces. --Carl Thress ... Read more

Features

  • Use to find studs inside a wall, by detecting the drywall nails
  • Can be used in tight spaces where metal objects may exist
  • No calibrating or guessing as it pinpoints metal instantly with visual or audio signals
  • Works on all types of woods and particle board
  • Detects nails and screws, staples and other metal objects

4-0 out of 5 stars Great little tool...
I was given this as a gift. I do a lot of resaw on my bandsaw, mostly chunks of hardwood and fruit woods I acquire in the round. It's amazing the amount of nails, wire staples, bullets, etc you can find in this type of wood. I was fairly impressed with the depth range. Though some reviewer's have said this will only read to an inch, I have found metal screws at a 3 inch depth in a piece of alder. The tree had grown up and around them, saved a good bandsaw blade on that one.
My one and only complaint is tone volume, could be a little louder for us "old" guys, whose hearing isn't top notch. That being said, this is a great little tool and a nice addition to my shop. I use it a lot, and recommend it highly.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good tool for the money
This small metal detector works surprisingly well for such an inexpensive tool.I used it to find nails in some pine boards salvaged from the ceiling of a century-old house. It managed to detect the 2 or 3 nails that I didn't see (and likely would have missed entirely).Bear in mind that you often have to scan the board from more than one direction to detect the nails and this small model isn't likely to find anything in lumber that's very thick (much over one inch). The larger model is probably more sensitive and easier to use, but if you buy this one, you're still won't be throwing your money away.

1-0 out of 5 stars Useless for me
I bought this tool to detect screws in drywall and it just doesn't. It detects only the metal corner reinforcement. [Money] wasted. PLUS it requires a battery, which isn't included for some reason (after 30 years of customer disappointment you'd think batteries would always be included now). Even when you put it in the cart, the cart doesn't offer you batteries... worthless, irritating. ... Read more
