4-0 out of 5 stars Little Heater is a Big help!
This heater has a small footprint and doesn't take up much space. It is working great in our garage as a supplement to our electric heater. It is nice and toasty up close to it, and it warms our 2 car garage up slowly to a decent level to do woodworking. It is perfect because my second electric heater was tripping the circuit breaker whenever I used power tools.

The only thing to remember is to keep it away from the sawdust!I like it so much, we're buying another one, so we can ditch the other electric heater.(I'm tired of tripping on cords!)

2-0 out of 5 stars Reply about Lack of filter ruined my heater.
When I pulled my heater out to use it the pilot wouldn't light. I diagnosed my problem to be the regulator, not the control valve. The guy's statement about using a trap (filter) for 20lb tanks is incorrect. If what he said was true why isn't there a trap (filter) on every gas grill, outdoor heater, and any other appliance that normally uses a propane tank other than the 1lb tank? The reason for the trap (filter) is when the gas supply is delivered by iron pipe. Initially the pipe has oil inside it due to the manufacturing process and to prevent it from rusting before it is put into use. The viscosity of the oil is heavy so the trap (filter) collects this oil and later any scale that may occur from the inside surface of the pipe. Without the trap (filter) the oil or particles of scale could end up in the control valve preventing it from operating properly. If you use copper lines or a rubber gas line there isn't any need for a trap(filter).

4-0 out of 5 stars About filters....
The mention of filters that I saw was a recommedation for a TRAP, not a filter, as it was called. It is common in professionally installed propane appliances to have a trap. I haven't ever seen a trap used on a portable appliance. The trap is essentially a pipe "T" with a short section of pipe going down, terminated by a cap. The other side of the "T" goes up to the appliance. The trap allows chunks of debris fall into it; it is in no way a filter. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This fan is amazing.
The other reviews are dead-on. This fan is extremely loud, albeit, the fan pushes more air into my apt than a tsunami.
    Very useful for droning out loud neighbors, street sounds, annoying tourists, etc;

Recommended for people in California, (or any State for that matter) that is accustomed to rolling blackouts &/or sudden heatwaves. Atleast with the low energy usage, you won't feel that you contribute to the blackouts in the first place.

Wish I would have come across this last year.

Also, the fan is aesthetically pleasing, so for all you design queens out there, the fan is the shiz-nit, FYI.

5-0 out of 5 stars I can't sleep without this
For some strange reason, I have a lot of trouble getting to sleep if this fan isn't on. It doesn't matter if it's snowing outside, this fan has to be on.

I have been using it for 2 years and it still works great. I rarely use the high setting because I have a small room, but the low setting is great for sleeping because it isn't very loud.

My only complaint, as will ALL fans that I've owned, are that they get dusty rather quickly and are difficult to clean. You have to unscrew the plastic screens, wipe the fan blade, hose down the screens, and screw them pack on.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful fan, not so normal use
This fan is very, very loud, and moves an incredible amount of air (I'm planning on contacting the manufacturer to see just how much). It's very nice, and I'd imagine it would be very comfortable, should I use it for room cooling.

I don't use it for room cooling, however. It is tied to my computer so that it blows totally into the case. It has lowered the ambient temperature in my case by over 20F and lowered the temperature of my processor by about 8F. ... Read more

Here's another "wish we'd thought of this" item. It's ingenious in its simplicity, and it works like a dream. Most of us have a 20-gallon propane tank for backyard barbecuing, right? Well, that little tank becomes the power behind this clever heater. Connecting is simple, and startup is effortless, and the adjustable heat can do everything from taking the chill off a late evening on the deck to toasty-warming an ice-fishing shack in International Falls, Minn. Because the heat throw is adjustable, we can imagine using it for tailgating, camping, working on cars, picnics, and on and on. Use is worry-free, thanks to the safety shutoff. You can't go wrong with this. --Kris Jensen-Van Heste ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for camping and unheated workshops
This little heater is great for winter camping or just keeping the workshop warm. We also used it during an ice storm when the power went out. Low-priced and easy to find fuel makes this well worth a look.

2-0 out of 5 stars Hey.... What am I missing Here
I purchased this heater after reading the glowing reviews.I am not pleased with it at all.I live in the southwest so we don't have very cold winters where I am.I have a two car enclosed garage attached to the house.I set up the heater and put it on high and checked the temperature and it was 40 degrees.I came back in one hour and the temperature was about 41 degrees. This has happened three to four times with almost no increase in temperature.... and no my thermometer is working. The unit does work and it feels like it is putting out heat within a few feet but does nothing overall.Would like to give a good review, but can't.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well made, durable, reliable.Like a Zippo!
I got a Mr. Heater Single unit about 8 years ago as a backup source of heat after hurricane Hugo knocked out our power for three weeks. It is still working fine and has come in real handy during infrequent ice storms and winter power failures.

My dad liked my single a lot so he bought a Mr. Heater Double to heat a big 3 car garage sized shop.He liked it but now thinks that a single would have worked fine as the double gets that big area heated in no time and keeps it really toasty.

My single unit works far better than gas logs to heat up a room.It does make a hissing sound that is not too loud but barely audible.A single will knock the chill off a large room in no time.A tank of propane will last about 30 to 36 continuous hours if you keep it set on low.I think this is a great alternative to other auxilary heat sources like Kerosuns or a fireplace. With an asthmatic child in our family, a kerosene heater is out of the question for us.This burns clean, creates no odor, smoke or soot. There's no maintenance, no wicks or anything like that. You can store it indefinitely untouched and then pull it out and fire it up with no preparation.I will buy another one if mine ever wears out.

I have recommended Mr. Heater to lots of my friends and family and have no reservation about recommending one to you.If you can't decide whether you need a single, double or triple I suggest trying the single first. Then if you aren't happy step up to the double or triple. It is really amazing how much heat a Mr. Heater Single generates!

It is rare to find a really good product that is durable and an excellent value.Mr. Heater is one of those rare finds. They are the Zippo lighter of auxillary space heaters in my opinion. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars montana hunting camp
I have a wall tent 14X26X5.When we arrived in camp it was raining so hard all we could do was get the tent up and the rain fly on. The temperature was in the high 30's. We did not set up our stoves or cut wood because of the rain.We fired up the Mr Heater and in no time the tent was warm.It rained off and on for the next 7 days and we only used the Mr Heater for our heat for the tent.I purchased my Mr Heater from Amazon.com used (refurbished) and it is excellent.I am going to buy three more used when they come on to amazon.com as I have two other big tents in my hunting camp and a shower tent and they will all have a Mr. Heater in them for my hunters comfort.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good lord - the smell!!!
Have you ever seen that Seinfeld where Jerry's car is attacked by BO that doesn't go away, and lingers on anything that crosses its path? This has the same disease.Plus, it was clearly a used item - the packaging was repacked and the foot warmer was dirty.Gross, but it's a foot warmer so I thought I'd give it a chance regardless. In its defense, it *does* work - my terminally cold wife liked the warm footsy feel; unfortunately she has a sense of smell. The room we had it in is still stinky!Get this thing outta our house!!! :)

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Nice Foot Warmer!!! Chazzzzz
I bought this for my Mom. She has always had cold feet. She is toasty warm all over NOW! The winter in Colorado can be very cold and the cost to heat a large room is not cheap!

I read the other comments and worried about the rubber smell. Well I plugged in the unit and a little smell on high heat and soon the smell was gone. She never smelled anything and was so happy about her feet/legs >> WHOLE BODY WARM ! HIGH HEAT WAS TO WARM SO I AM GLAD I BOUGHT the $15 switch that allows you high/low and on off settings! BUY it if you know someone that has cold feet!

Soooooo glad I found this item!

1-0 out of 5 stars Cozy Foot Warmer smells terribly
The foot warmer produces terribly strong rubber smell. My office and surrounding hall area stunk when the mat was in, so that I was requested to remove it from my office. Looking for an odorless alternative. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Hose and heater do not work
    .
In December 2004 I purchased aMr Heater MH18B Portable Heater
and this hose to connect to a propane storage conatainer.
    .
The hose inserts into the tank and the heater smoothly. But no
propane flows from the tank to the heater. I have been unable
to get even the pilot flame to light ... no gas flow through
    to the heating element
    .
A wasted $150 .... not a very happy or satisfied customer
    .

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent add on for Mr. Heater
I bought two of these hoses to attach to two 20lb propane tanks.Attaching to 20lb propane tanks is a huge savings over using the individual 1 quart propane cyclinders.Hoses work very well. The only thing to remember when attaching the hose to 20lb propane tanks is that the couplings are left hand threaded (i.e. you must turn to the left to tighten).

5-0 out of 5 stars Almost a required upgrade
I bought this hose because I wanted to maximize the safety, usefulness and economy of the propane Portable Buddy heater by Mr Heater. You can't go wrong buying this hose!

    1. It allows the use of a larger LP tank (I have a 20 lb cylinder). I am certain the savings from buying LP fuel in bulk will pay for the hose.

    2. You can locate the bulk tank a good distance away from the lit heater. I use the heater primarily in my garage, and with the hose I can put the heater up on a shelf or on the workbench, off the floor, and still have the bulk tank in a convenient and safe spot.

    3. The hose can be used with any propane appliance that uses disposable propane cylinders.

Here's an essential safety tip when using this hose: be sure to shut/close the valve on the bulk tank BEFORE you remove the hose from the tank. It's possible to remove the hose end from the bulk tank without closing the tank valve and you will quickly find out that liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) is another name for stinky, oily mess when it comes squirting out of the valve as I've done. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Better quality than Holmes
I got three different brands to test. One was this model, another was a Holmes (with digital display), and another was a brand called Hawaiian Breeze. The Honeywell was bar far the better quality unit, even though it was between the price ranges of the other two.The fan motors did not have an annoying hum like the Holmes model. And instead of the extension that clumsily slips on the left of the other two units I tested, the Honeywell model had built-in extensions in both sides. Also, the unit seemed more powerful than the other two, especially in the high-setting.On the lowest setting, it was very quiet, but not moreso than the other models. The construction quality was also better, with heavier-duty plastic. This model also included a metal bracket to mount the unit sideways should you have sliding rather than double-hung windows...a nice touch.I wish the extensions were a few inches longer and the whole unit a few inches shorter to accomodate a wider-range of windows.Although it indicates a maximum width of 38 inches, it fit in my 40-inch window fine without any gaps. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Quick Warm Heat cuts morning chill
I have the older version that is functionally identical to the current version (they replaced the L-bolt that holds the heater on the tank with a ribbed knob on the new version). I love it for taking the morning chill off the house in the morning. I keep it in the kitchen and fire it up first thing on a cold morning. After about 30 minutes the chill is off not only the kitchen but the adjacent master bedroom and living rooms.

Be cautious - like any unvented heater it can be dangerous if you try to heat an unvented space for any length of time.

It is economical to use and even more so if you are able to find a local propane tank refiller. If you are forced to exchange the tank, it can cost [$$$]. If you have the tank refilled it will only cost [$$$].

My heater was given to me, used, and I liked it so much I gave one to my sister to use when she didn't want to burn the fireplace. I am now going to buy a newer one for the house, and relegate the older on out to my workshop.

Reliable, efficient, made in the USA - whats not to like. ... Read more

Quiet and built of durable plastic, this device circulates air throughout a room at home, at the office, or in a college dorm. Use it alone or with an air conditioner to cool in the summer and to circulate heat evenly throughout a room in winter. It has an infinitely variable speed control (from 800 to 2,400 rpm), stands 12 inches high, has a 9-1/2-inch-diameter head, weighs 5 pounds, and carries a five-year warranty against defects. --Fred Brack ... This fan is mighty powerful and the best thing about it is the fact that it's very quiet.Of all the fans I've tried this size, this is the quietest.Especially on low....you'll hardly hear it running.Great for moving a little extra air conditioning into another room.Well made.Durable.Sturdy.For the few extra dollars for a fan this size, it's adds up to a great value.

5-0 out of 5 stars Vornado rocks!
It arrived today. It's June in Atlanta and I've been searching for a fan to help cool my home office. I didn't want to go to the expense of installing a ceiling fan, and felt sure that an inexpense floor or table fan would suffice. Unfortunately, I initially went to my local Target store. First I bought a 17-inch tilt-up floor fan made by Honeywell. I soon discovered that the on/off switch was cheap and that the lowest setting was enough to fly a kite in here. I took it back. My next choice was an oscillating fan on a floor stand. Cheap, cheap, cheap workmanship-- plus, you had to assemble it. The motor was metal and seemed durable enough, but once mounted, it sagged sadly toward the floor-- the plastic apparatus and stand, too weak to support it. I took it back. Ok, I told myself. Don't be in such a hurry. Go to Amazon and do some research. Vornado fans were generally given high ratings. Mine arrived and I am elated. It is just the size I need, is sturdy, the fan-speed settings are unlimited, it runs quietly, and puts out a wonderful breeze. Vornado fans have many fans (and visa versa). Now I am one of them!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great air-mover, quiet (relatively) and in a compact frame.
    4.5 stars, actually.

This fan is great. It's really small, so it can be placed in a window frame or almost any where you need air to be moved from, and doesn't obstruct like a larger, yet less-powerful fan would.

It's really powerful. It really does shoot a tight beam of air, and in turn circulates air around an entire room. This is especially helpful, in say, small, un-air conditioned dorm rooms at colleges too cheap to install AC.This fan is also very good at moving cool air from one room to another. My room at home, also, ironically, does not have AC.The family room down the hall does.So I just place this baby in the hall aimed into my room, and the lovely cold air is pulled in from the family room and shot into mine, and my room is now AC'd, somewhat.

The variable speed control is very nice, letting you control exactly how much air you want moved. The lowest speed is almost silent, but is meant more for just personal cooling, while the fastest speed is rather noisy (but nothing unbearable, it's not bad at all), it IS moving quite a large volume of air, and good for whole-room air circulation/cooling.

I would give this gem a 5, but the frame is just a bit mal-aligned.It can get bent just slightly which causes the blades to smack against the plastic frame, and while this is easily correctable, it is annoying. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

If you really need to stir up a wind, this industrial-grade Patton high velocity air circulator is the animal for the job. Built with an all-metal construction and a formidable motor, the fan has three powerful speeds and a full-tilt adjustable head. The design allows you to blow hot air out of a room, bring cold air in, or send cool air near the floor upward for circulation. The fan is best suited to where a little noise doesn’t bother anyone--on its lowest setting, it’s audible, and on its highest, nothing much else is. Patton includes a stout tubular stand, non-skid feet, and a 10-year warranty. The product is UL listed. Keep in mind that the Patton’s 14-inch measurement here refers to the front of the grille. The entire head measures 16-1/2 inches in diameter. --Emily Bedard ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Patton Not The Same - Poor Warranties
I always thought that Patton fans were one of the best, but based on my experiences with them, I find that Patton's quality has declined.I purchased this fan from a local hardware store, and the first one had to be returned since the motor made a very loud noise like bearings slipping.I returned it, got another one and it lasted one year until the motor just stopped. The fan had a 10 year warranty on it, and when I returned it to the store in the box with the receipt, I was told that I had to contact Patton. When I did, they told me it would cost me 10.00 to ship the fan to them to repair it, and then I had to pay an additional 10.00 to have it shipped back to me.Well, I paid 25.00 for the fan and thought I was better off to just get another brand of fan which I did. What good is a warranty if you have to pay almost as much to ship it as it would cost for another fan?The store would not give me my money back or honor the warranty, so I was out of luck. I bought another brand of fan elsewhere and I have had no trouble with it. I also had two other Patton fans with an 18 inch blade, both which have broken. The first one the motor failed after three years and the second one the blade broke near the shaft after two years.Luckily with the second fan, the store was kind enough tohonor the 10 year warranty and just give me my money back since I still had the receipt after two years. So much for a ten year warranty! My advice to those who buy Patton products - try another brand first, but if you like Patton's name, put that receipt in a very safe place and buy from a store which has a good return policy and honors their warranties because this brand of fan may not last you very long and you might have to return it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Sturdy Simplicity
My 14 inch Patton fan performed wonderfully during the summer past. It has a remarkable ability to send a channel of air a considerable distance across a large room into an adjoining room, which is wonderful when you need it. It is study, all metal (I'm tired of the flimsy plastic that falls over or breaks as on other fans I've seen). It is a bit noisy on the high speed, but medium & low seem generally enough all I need. Nothing complex and no attempt to make it look like anything but what it is -- a basic, hard working air-mover. At the special price offered,I bought a second one as a backup! Because of the long distances it moves air, it's also great to use to dry floors after washing, winter or summer. A great buy!

1-0 out of 5 stars JunK!
Not the Patton from the past. This thing makes more noises than a junkyard dog.Its a cheap knock-off for sure.Shame on the manufacturer.I returned it at once and found another with different colors from someplace else for twice as much and it's shorted out after one year.Skip Patton as its no longer a true "Patton." ... I am a home mechanic, use this heater for working on cars during winter time. This smaller heater can heat up 3 car garage in about 10 minutes. It is not as loud as 75K BTU model.so I can work on car during nights. My only complain is that the unit does not come with thermostat.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brace yourself
This is one heck of a fan. In the week before my landlord turns off the heat and turns on the AC in the spring, it's usually pretty warm in our apartment. At night I had this set up about 15 feet from the bed and down a small hallway. The low setting was enough for me to keep my feet under the quilt. And once the apartment cooled off enough, I was able to grab the remote and turn it off without having to get up! It's very slim, light, and quiet and yet incredibly strong.
The only things that I would improve upon are the pictures that tell you what each button does. It doesn't take long to figure them out, but they could be more descriptive. Plus, they are probably deciphered on the instruction sheet, but I don't recall if they were or not.
I couldn't tell you how well it was made, but it sure seems sturdy to me.
I would definately buy this fan again.
