Doesn't Do Everything, But Does What I Want It To Do
I have two ceramic space heaters -- this one and a Patton Titan, and they each serve a specific purpose very well.The Holmes heater is not great at heating a certain location (as in one person in a cold room), as it is built to disperse heat.That design, however, makes it excellent for heating a small-to-medium room.I use the Holmes heater, therefore, to heat my office.I have a nice corner office with lots of windows -- in an old building with only mediocre circulation.My office can get COLD.The Holmes heater is just the right booster for the building's existing system, and makes my office tolerably toasty, even in the coldest Michigan Winter.

A safe, quiet workhorse. But not the best.
Here's why.

1. It's a ceramic heater, supposedly the safest kind. Except for the meshed front, the unit's body has no hot parts.

2. At least four feet in length, the power chord is reasonably long.

3. The instructions provided are short, simple, and easily understood.

4. I use the unit in a 12'x15' room. It doesn't heat-up the entire room. I have to sit very close to the heater to feel it's powerful and focused heat blow. The lost stars in the rating.

5. There's only a soft whirring sound when it's working to reach up to the desired heat-setting. That's rather quiet.

6. I once deliberately had it on for eight straight hours. On "1500 Watts" and the maximum on the thermostat dial.

Other notes: A compact unit, it weighs little. There's a light that tells if the unit is plugged in. And another light to tell if the desired heat-setting has been reached. The unit's thermostat dial doesn't give a numerical temperature reading.

Regarding the previous review: It's not a design flaw. The "sliding control" on top has three settings. "Off," "750 Watts," and "1500 Watts." Perhaps the one you got is defective.

Danger!
I purchased this heater to use in a trailer. While it heated very well, the controls are very vague. After it warmed up, it could not be turned off, and I had to unplug it. Once it cooled down it was fine.

Cool and Quiet
I just got this fan today. Got it at the most popular retail store in America on clearance for $9. Normal price is $17. I chose it because we have a 8" Honeywell Table fan (still available) that set us back around $10 in 2000.
Our house has central air. Last year I computed it to cost 85¢ an hour to run it. Run it from 6-8 hours a day and you are looking at an extra $150 or so on the electric bill each month. It can make for a delightful cool house, at a price I can't afford every day, only the absolute hottest...

Powerful, not too noisy, and looks great.
I was a bit concerned reading some of the comments below, but I did NOT want an ugly plastic stand fan, so I took the chance for $38.I'm glad I did.I love this fan.It's powerful, yet quieter than some.The highest setting is a bit loud if you're watching TV, but the middle setting is not bothersome and adequately cools a 25 x 20 room.For sleeping, Low is the best bet, provides plenty of power for all but the largest bedrooms.And the fan looks great; you won't feel the urge to get it out of your sight when not in use.

Assembly was very easy, about 5 minutes.I had no problem attaching the front and back screens and locking them into place with the two attached plastic clips.It's been carried up and down stairs and run into by a dog, and its still solidly attached!I don't understand the problems noted by other reviewers; the only thing I can think of is that perhaps in shipping there was some damage or stacking on the carton,(amazon ships in mfrs. display box, not packed in a corrugated shipping box) and that the screens were no longer perfectly matching circles and thus would not lock into place.

Bottom line, there is nothing out there that works as well and looks this good for even twice the price.I'm going to buy another before they're gone.

Dissapointing
The fan was 2 weeks old and suddenly died. The motor burnt out. What a dissapointment!

I'm happy, its a good fan
I just got the fan and was able to install it in 20 minutes without any hassle.I followed the directions letter by letter and whazaam, I had a working fan!

The fan is powerful and very cooling and I like it a lot.On high, I can feel the effects of it in my bedroom when its on in the living room (I live in an apartment).Its not loud.I slept with it on low last night without a problem.

The only not-so-good trait is that the fan cover is not built to actaully snap securely into the fan base so it sort of just balances there.I suspect when I move it from room to room it may sometimes fall off and have to be re-balanced.Except for that, the fan is very sturdy and secure.I could see banging into it without knocking it over and no injury to the fan even if it was dropped or something (except the fan cover would fall off). ... Fan is garbage
We bought two of these fans about a year ago.Neither fan was used very much except on the occasional days in the summer when we didn't have our air conditioning on.One fan is now totally inoperative and the other doesn't oscillate and doesn't work at high speed.Don't even think about buying this fan!!!!

Great Fan
My friend has this fan.It is absolutely the best fan I've seen.The remote control is awesome.The low setting can freeze you out.It is also very quiet and powerful. I suggest this fan to anyone that likes to stay cool.

Major Cooling Action
We bought this fan for our bedroom and even on low, it's too cold to sleep without a comforter completely covering us.I love the remote control and timer features.The fan is quiet and will easily cool down a large room.We don't have A/C and it's the only fan we own.I agree that it isn't ideal to only be able to control certain features (including oscillation) with the remote control, and the fan isn't overly sleek or modern in appearance, which keeps it from being a 5 star product, but overall an excellent fan! ... 5 stars for a garage door accessory, maybe i'm pushing it
A simple product that does exactly what it is suppose to do.Easy to install. Just make sure to check the placement once the glue is down and the door is closed. This will ensure if the threshold moves you still have time to fix.

Mom on busy street
I bought this humidifier for my 5 month old's room to help not only with adding moisture to our dry home, but to help drown out the noises of the busy street we live on as well as the sounds from within our house. It has made a world of difference! He has slept so well since I bought this.It works great.The high setting does have a louder hum, but I sleep in his room sometimes and have no problem getting to sleep. The only down side is having to buy filters.The cheapest I've found are $8.20 + shipping each and we need to probably buy a new one every 1-2 months.Great purchase otherwise!

Does the job, but quite loud.
I spent a lot of time in the store looking over humidifiers, and finally decided on the Holmes.I like the design and features.The good point is it works very well at humidifying a small room.The bad is that it is VERY noisy.There's no way you could have it on high - it sounds like a jet engine.On low it is still quite loud.I have it in my son's room, and the white noise actually helps him sleep, but I would never be able to have it in my own room.If the noise isn't an issue, then this is a great humidifier, but I believe most people would prefer a quieter unit.

Simply too loud.
I have had this unit for one week. I am returning it tomorrow because it is ridiculously loud. Forget sleeping--I can barely hear the TV over it! If noise is not an issue, then this item might still be a good deal for you. I paid $24.99, which I thought was a good price for it. The positives are that it holds 2.5 gallons, instead of the usual 2 gallons in this price range, and it has a built-in moniter to let you know when it's time to change the filter. It says it can run for 24 hours without having to refill the water. I did not test this aspect, as I only run it while I sleep (or at least that's my goal). Another negative is that it has a sticker attached that says to call an 800 number before using. Thinking it might be a safety issue, I called. It automatically records the number--with registered name--and address you call from and gives you a voice response sales pitch. That ticked me off. I just bought a Honeywell warm mist unit today. Good for spare parts
I bought this with the sole purpose of cannibalizing it for the quartz rods.They are REALLY expensive, assuming you can find them separately.Made a kicking paint stripper with them, from directions found at "My Paint Tripper".I doubt Holmes cares WHY we buy these.For the intended purpose they're kind of ... not good.As sources of parts, you can't find em cheaper even on EBay.

Half of Heater Stopped Heating
I purchased this heater 01-24-03 from Lowes. I used it last year and stored it all summer. I took it out of storage and only one side glows and heats.

Yes there is a 6 year warranty IF you pack it and ship it back to Holmes and enclose a $10.00 fee. Shipping and Handling is $8.00, therefore the 6 year warranty costs you $18.00. I paid $49.88 for the heater at Lowes.

To get the 'free' warranty, it will cost me 36% of the purchase price. Not a good deal at all!

I doubt that I will be purchasing another 6 year free warranty or a Holmes product.
