5-0 out of 5 stars A very effective trimmer
Positive: I found this to be a great trimmer .It quickly and effectively cut through branches up to 3/8 of an inch (as stated in the manual) and was light and easy to use. While I might not suggest it if you have a great number of bushes to deal with, it sure worked really well with the four or five that I trimmed down and shaped.

Negative: The only issue I had with it is the built-in cord holder. If you plan on using a 25 (or 50 foot) extension cord, I would venture a guess that you should be using a 16 (or 14) guage cord, and the hole for the cord to loop through is a little tight.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great little machine
I bought this months ago, and after using it myself, my daughter borrowed it and she also loves it.I wouldn't be surprised if she bought one for herself (she is NOT keeping MINE). It's lightweight, and easy for a woman to handle.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great product
I decided to get my husband this trimmer for father' day after seeing him trim our hedges with a small pair of pruning shears. He loves it!!!As stated, it comes fully assembled.Just get an extension cord, plug it in, and go for it.It was light weight but not flimsy. He couldn't believe how easy it was and how fast it was.We didn't know why we had not purchased one earlier. The price is great, the product is great and you will love it.Note...if you want to trim larger branches, Black and Decker makes larger trimmers. ... Editorial Review

We've always hated to trim hedges, but that might be because wenever had our hands on Black & Decker's new Hedge Hog cordless trimmer. It's light, hungry, and powerful--and did we mention cordless? Its14.4-volt battery will hold a charge for 40 minutes (who really wantsto labor longer than that anyway?) and recharges in three hours. At agood clip, you can cover 1,000 square feet on a single charge. Therubber grips feel good in hand and cut vibration to nearly nothing. Itweighs in at 6 pounds but feels lighter. A nice plus: The battery isinterchangeable with Black and Decker's other Firestorm tools. Thisone's a winner. --Kris Jensen-Van Heste ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Much A Help and Worth a Try
We bought this product some time ago - and we are still happy with it.It's durable and convenient, and It holds a charge for quite a long time fully charged. We found it quite helpful around our yard - It's nice not to fuss with electrical cords. My husband is very pleased with it, and commented it "Works Very Good".

5-0 out of 5 stars Good for the $$
First off I found it to be a great hedge trimmer for the $$ buck.Pretty well made and despite what "one" person wrote in another review it "does" seem to fit all the 14v firestorm tools I found at a leading hardware store. If you don't want to deal with a cord, or another gas powered tool I would BUY it!

1-0 out of 5 stars False advertising: The American way?
I'm looking for a hedge trimmer to replace my venerable Black & Decker 16" corded electric hedge trimmer. When I saw this B&D cordless hedge trimmer (CHT500) advertised "Removable 14.4v FireStorm battery interchanges with other 14.4v FireStorm products," I thought it would be perfect because I also own a B&D 14.4 volt FireStorm cordless drill. I already have two battery packs for my drill, so three packs would provide ample power to trim my back hedges and bushes in front. I researched the trimmer on B&D's Web site, but it had a number of contradictions. (22" blade and 24" blade advertised on the same page--it has a 22" blade. 14.4v and 18.0v advertised on the same page--it's 14.4v. Maybe that's why I didn't believe it when it listed the PS140 battery under Accessories.) I ordered it from Amazon.com and even with free Super Saver Shipping, it arrived in only three days!

Imagine my irritation (and vocabulary) when I saw the battery was, in fact, nothing like the batteries for my 14.4v FireStorm cordless drill! The trimmer uses a PS140 Type 3 (push-in) and the drill uses an FSB14 (slide-on). They're nothing alike (except for being 14.4v.

The instructions state that the battery is shipped in a run-down condition, not a fully-discharged condition, so it only requires a 3-hour charge. I charged it for three hours, and, Saturday morning, I went outside and fired it up. It cut great! Having no cord is great! Unfortunately, it died after a mere 15 minutes. (Their Web site says its charge lasts 40 minutes.) Well, at least I got one bush done. Too bad I have five more bushes and about ninety feet of honeysuckles to trim. Now you can see why I liked the idea of three battery packs.

I thought that maybe the instructions are wrong and it actually shipped fully-discharged (which requires an 8-hour charge), so I charged it for eight hours. Sunday morning, I went out to tackle the rest of the hedges. I was outside for 45 minutes before it died. If I'm generous, it ran for the advertised 40 minutes, and I was able to do four evergreen bushes and part of an I-don't-know-what-it-is bush, but I had to finish up with my electric trimmer. I still haven't gotten to the honeysuckles.

My wife drove to the local B&D location and returned it. They accepted it without a problem. We'll see how quickly B&D sends me a check.

I've since bought the corded electric 24" Hedge Hog trimmer (HS2400). Read my review of it to see if I can avoid cutting the extension cord...

    CHT500 summary:
Cuts well, even 3/8" woody branches.
Sometimes you need multiple passes--as with any trimmer.
I like the design and the balance.
The handles are comfortable and easy to use horizontally and vertically.
Includes a vinyl blade sheath (which the HS2400 does not--why?).
Cuts about twenty feet of 3-foot tall evergreen bushes in a single charge.
If you want more than 40 minutes of runtime, buy an electric trimmer. ... Read more

Leave no hedge untrimmed: The 24-inch Hedge Hog eats up branches up to 3/4-inch thick without blinking. The dual-action blades work smoothly and quickly with less vibration, further dampened by the full-sized, three-sided soft-grip comfort handle. A lock-on switch prevents trigger-finger fatigue, and the lock-off eliminates accidental starting. Electric power is environmentally friendly and quieter, too, plus it’s always ready when you are. The super long reach of the 24-inch dual blades is a nice switch from shorter varieties, meaning less dangerous reaching for the user. No assembly is needed: Open the box, plug it in, and trim.--Kris Jensen-Van Heste ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars great trimmer, good balance, great price
This makes simple work of any hedge. The balance is good, so it's easy on the shoulders, elbows and wrists. The balanced handle is padded so you can handle it with no stress points. You can hold the trigger down or engage a lock to keep it trimming, his is very good on stopping on fatigue.Very little vibration.Trims through branches that usually require lopping-shears.The longer reach also prevents you from trying to over extend.

    Well designed, worth every penny.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cuts thick woody bushes like they were butter!
I bought the B&D HS2400 electric hedge trimmer after a fiasco with B&D's CHT500 cordless trimmer. (See my review of it.) It's already assembled, so there's nothing more to do besides remove it from the box and plug it in.

The handle is comfortable and easy to hold both horizontally and vertically. Its good balance makes it very easy to handle. The trigger is large and easy to depress. The lock is a bit difficult to engage, and I find it easier to just hold the trigger down.

But, this trimmer really shines when it comes to cutting. I have about 100 feet of honeysuckle bushes that grow to be about eight feet tall every year. They're incredibly woody and difficult for smaller trimmers to cut. The first thing I did with the HS2400 was to sweep it across the honeysuckles about five feet off the ground. It cut through them like butter. The dual-action blades virtually eliminate vibration, and I easily guided the trimmer through the bushes. The 24" blade reduces the amount of time you spend trimming as well as helping you make a straighter cut. The trimmer worked equally well on the front sides. I cut through those bushes faster than my kids could stack the branches. My wife was cutting the front sides with our old B&D 16" trimmer and it was faster for me to just do the whole thing with the HS2400.

Black & Decker states that the trimmer can cut up to 3/4" branches, and it does that with ease. Most trimmers struggle when they reach their maximum capacity, but the HS2400 just lops them right off. If you don't hold the trimmer steady, a few branches might be a bit ragged at the ends, but it's easy to trim them again to clean up the edge.

The hook that holds the extension cord to prevent it from being yanked out of the pigtail is a bit small and the opening a bit tight. I'd like a slightly larger opening and a larger hook, but it holds the cord. In about three hours of use, it only fell out once. It would be easy enough to use a small PVC cable tie or rubber band to improvise a different way of securing it, but I don't think it's worth the effort.

Please keep the extension cord in mind when using an electric trimmer. Buy a bright orange or yellow cord. In my opinion, despite their neon color, the bright green ones are less noticeable in bushes and grass. Also, buy twice as much cord as you think you'll need. You want to have about fifteen feet of cord next to you, and patio furniture, trees, and other obstacles inevitably reduce the amount you have available. Spending an extra two dollars for another fifty feet will ensure that you don't have to worry about your extension cord. Plus, you'll be especially glad of the extra length if you have to trim the other side of a hedge. Trust me--my old fifty foot cord has two sets of electrical tape where my old trimmer bit through it because it was too difficult to manage a shorter cord.

Update: I finished the hedges today and, although I was careful not to hit my chain link fence, I didn't notice a bean plant holder. The trimmer doesn't cut through 1/8" steel rod. In fact, it torqued one of the teeth so badly that the blade is ruined. My fault. I'll see if it can be repaired cheaply enough, but if it can't, I'll buy another one. That's how much I like this trimmer.

    HS2400 summary:
Cuts incredibly well, even 3/4" woody branches (but not steel)
    You rarely need multiple passes.
    Well-designed and balanced.
    Easy to maneuver. No vibration.
Comfortable handles and easy to use horizontally and vertically.
No vinyl blade sheath (unlike the CHT500--why?).

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Electric Hedge Trimmer
Like the other reviewer, I am exclusive to electric garden tools. This Hedge Hog is the longest and most powerful hedge trimmer made and it is by far my favorite tool.It makes light work of most shrubs and really allows for precise sculpting of shrubs.I have even used it to chop up branches in my compost bin, which it was able to do with aplomb. The controls are safe, and I find that tying the extension cord a second time around the handle leaves it secure.(The danger with the extension cord becoming unplugged is if the tool is locked "on" when you plug it back in.)

My only complaints are that this Hedge Hog is slightly heavy and I wish that it were 36" long when I'm trimming bigger hedges.Nevertheless, this is so far the biggest size they make.I would buy it again and again. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

Ever find yourself in a situation where a hand tool is not enough, but a full-size power tool is too much? Black & Decker's cordless grass shear is just what you need for detail work around flower beds, trees, fences, retaining walls--you name it. Modeled along the lines of sheep-shearing clippers, the quiet buzzing of this little machine will give your grass a safe trim without knocking down your prized petunias. We found it to be especially useful in small, delicate, or difficult-to-reach areas, such as around bushes, vines, and ornamental grasses. Note that this model was not designed for large or lengthy jobs: the battery charge lasts only up to 35 minutes, and the 3-inch shearing blades will not cover ground as efficiently as the spinning line of a string trimmer. Although the unit is extremely lightweight and easy to maneuver, it does require that you keep the trigger pressed to engage the blades, which can cause hand fatigue after about 15 minutes of constant use. A safety latch prevents accidental start-up. --Michelle McSweeney ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Useless Toy
These shears are way too feeble for any serious use. They cut the tender tips of the grass fine, but when it comes to the beefier, possibly wet, root area, they totally fail. The overload shutoff kicks in every 5 seconds, making them totally unusable for me. I tried to trim the overgrown edge of my lawn and I gave up after 6 feet. If you are a serious gardener and want a strong, reliable tool that does its job, this is not for you.

3-0 out of 5 stars Batteries
I have used the clippers for many years and I want to replace the batteries. I have a GS300 clipper not the GS500 and would like to be able to order batteries to replace the ones that no longer will take a charge. How may I order new bateries for the GS300 grass clipper? Thank you, WL Bourgeois

3-0 out of 5 stars You get what you pay for.
I can't say that this is the best grass shear made.
When fully charged, it will run for about 30-45
minutes before the charge is lost.It takes quite
a long time to charge this baby up.

The quality on the handheld unit it pretty good. The
long-handle accessory is just fine also.I don't like
the way they both connector together.Seems like it could
    be trouble over time.

We have a yard that is close to 3/4 of an acre, with lots
of flower beds, trees, and things to trim around. Honestly
this is not the unit for us, but my wife wanted a rechargeable,
and there are not many out there.

It works. It gets the job done if you are patient. But there
    could be improvements made.

To get 5 stars, the battery life should be longer, quicker
to recharge, and the connector for the long handle should be
    more secure. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good but not perfect
I used super saver shipping and it took about 3 weeks to get it. When it finally arrived, it was packaged well and after a charge fired right up.

I need to clip the hedges about 3 times a summer.
So far I've trimmed about 25 bushes and it works as well as the old electric one it replaced. Its light and so far the battery has held a charge well. I really like not having to use the extenstion cord which my Dad cut with the previous corded trimmer.

A couple complaints are that my right hand gets a cramp after about 20 minutes as it tends to continually squeeze the on/off switch probably much harder than necessary. I also notice that the plastic case seems to separate a bit when I am moving through heavy work. I'm sure there are better/study units out there but for the occasional work I do, this fits the bill. One other nice thing is I have some other tools which also use the 14.4 Volt batteries from B&D. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars good for branches up to 1/8" thick, not good on grass
It is just not good on grass even though photos on the box show use in
that situation -- doesn't slice but rather chomps through the area and
just will not cut through grass. So, the long handled attachment
accessory with wheels (for trimming and edging) is not useful. The
long handled attachment also is not balanced so even though you have
more reach for taller bushes or areas closer to the ground, you have
to torque both wrists to swing the trimmer around.

However on shrubbery, it shaves well.Think of how you use a hair
trimmer - that is how it trims bushes and shrubs.

It's lightweight and not intimidating as a gas powered model -- my
wife can use it without feeling scared.

4-0 out of 5 stars Shrubbers and plants come in different sizes...
If you have bought one of these items and don't like it, that's probably why. You have to buy tools based on the type of job and outcome expectations. Your job requires a larger size trimmer.

I'm a big fan of Black & Decker. They've been making affordable and quality products for decades. The 6" cordless shrubber I just bought is no exception. However, you need to buy tools that fit the job. No tool does everything. That said, this shrubber is good for small plants, ground covers, and shrubs with thin stems and branches. I've used it on Azaleas, miniature Gardenias, English Ivy, and other assorted small stem shrubs. On a few of my shrubs, the stalk is a bit big for the tool I bought, so it gets stuck and you have to pull out the stem or branch. But applied correctly, it works well and holds a charge for longer than I expected.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for the Size
After having used my parents' 2 foot shrubber, and not knowing much about shrubbers, I purchased this one thinking a rechargeable one would beat their plug-in variety. While the cordlessness is a great feature and the thing has an impressive life, I was surprised by the size of this thing. I guess I should've paid more attention to the 6-inch blade description rather than the rechargeable feature. It works great for small shrubs here and there, but for a 7 foot tall bush in the back yard, it is simply adequate. So just be sure you buy the right sized blade. Otherwise, I highly recommend this. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars feedback for potential buyers
Just thought I would share my personal experience using this product. The trimmer works well didn't experience any problems after I used it a couple of times cuts well and even. However don't expect a trimmer that can cut exceptionally thick branches! As stated can cut up to 3/8" I would say probably that or a little less. For the reviewer that experienced severe problems... overheating and burn out, I suspect you may have used an extension cord that was not the correct gauge for the instrument... that can and would cause what you experienced with your machine. Personally would recommend this for the average gardener that just wants to keep hedges and shrubs in a neat manner.

It smoked and exploded in 10 minutes....

Just in process of trimming small shrubs and hedges with max of 1\8" branches, this thing suddenly started smoking and litteraly popped loudly and threw almost every circuit in the panel somehow.......

In the last year, I have had a B&D jig saw, a B&D router and a B&D kitchen mixer do the exact same thing......

Why can B&D make awesome drills, but everyone one of their other products that require a cord only survive a limited time with light use...Maybe it's bad Karma.....I love their drills though, but I think I'll avoid anything else B&D related like the plague before I go up in flames with it too.....

1-0 out of 5 stars HS 1010 Hedge Hog
I agree with two out of three of the other reviews. The Hedge hog runs smooth, but does not cut small growth. It just smashes them, and leaves the stem hanging on the bush. This is probably due to the very short (1/8") cutting blades.I don't like to be negative, but just wanted to alert others to this problem.I bought a Black&Decker HT-2000 with the old fashioned large blades, and it works great.

5-0 out of 5 stars I'm in love with a beautiful Hog!
I was in trouble...with all the rain we've had the vegetation was overtaking the house...in came the Hog to save the day!In just a short period of time it cut things down to size.Three days work was reduced to three hours!Cool features of this machine include the absence of a cord (so that you don't accidentally cut off the main cord), choice of auto and manual power (great when you're starting to fatigue) and the ability to cut thick, woody stems (of which I had plenty).Magically, the leaves flew off the bushes and now my yard is littered with piles of leaves which my hubbie has volunteered to clean up.
This little Hog turned hard yardwork into fun ....it's well worth the money.
I would highly recommend it to anyone.

1-0 out of 5 stars Black & Decker Hedge Hog HS1010
This double action hedge trimmer is no better than one I bought 20 years ago. (And Quit using after half a season). The reason for the displeasure is that it does not cut the branches off cleanly, it chews or nibbles at them until some of them fall off.As with all their other models the blade moves much too fast. The double action models only add to the problem.

Last summer I used a German manufactured hedge trimmer that operated much slower. It had llolypop shaped tines that actually held the branches forcing them into the blades rather than away. This trimmer worked with ease and cut branches of all sizes on hedges and various types of bushes and ornamental trees. Unfortunately this unit was a European model that operated on 220 volts and they do not manufacture a 110 volt model for export. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars good hedge trimmer
I find the trimmer very well balanced and there is a minimium of vibration. The trimmer may not have the power of a corded version but not having to deal with a cord is well worth any small loss of power. It works well and has enough power for what I use it for.The charger also serves as a hanger for the unit.My only complaint is with the battery/charger.According to the owners manual, leaving the trimmer on the charger while it is plugged in over 24 hours may damage the battery.Toro recommends plugging the charger in a minimium of 3 hours before use.Otherwise the trimmer can hanger on the charger as long as the charger is unplugged.Maybe not a big deal if you remember to plug it in before you start your lawn care duties. It would be nice to plug in the charger, hang the trimmer on it and use it at will without some planning ahead of time.

In summary, it is a quality trimmer at a good price with a minor irratation. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

Plug it in and it’s ready when you are, no charging, no running to the gas station. This little workhorse will make quick work of hedges with growth up to 3/8 inch thick without hesitating. Its 16-inch blade is perfect for small hedges, bushes and other growth. We like the cord-retention clip Ryobi’s built on, and the lock-on feature is nice, too, saving your trigger finger from fatigue. The only assembly required is installation of the front handle, and after that, just give the blades a little oil before and after use, and this trimmer will last and last. The blade is easily resharpened with an eight-inch fine round file. Perfect for the homeowner.--Kris Jensen-Van Heste ... Read more

    Editorial Review

The stainless steel blades on this hungry hedge trimmer will tackle branches up to 3/8 of an inch thick. Because it’s battery-powered, portability and earth-friendliness are superior. The unit will run for up to an hour on a single charge, and the 24-volt battery will recharge to full capacity at least 200 times. It’s well-balanced and easy to maneuver with a comfortable grip and ergonomic front handle. The two-stage Fast Charger indicates battery status with red and green lights, and the wall-mounted storage and charging stand keeps the trimmer out of the way. Comfort, convenience, and no air pollution make this a winner.--Kris Jensen-Van Heste ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent tool
I purchased this for the convenience of not having to lug a cord around.I am more than satisfied. It is powerful enough to do all my trimming.I can't comment on battery life, since it hasn't run down on me. I have spent two hours trimming with it (not running 100%, but running as often as a trimmer would while while trimming bushes), and the battery held up just fine.

3-0 out of 5 stars OK
This unit is OK. THe first unit I received was smashed to pieces inside the box. The box showed some slight damage up around the blade, but inside the pacakage the blade was fine but the plastic head and guard were broken to pieces. A second unit arrived and it was in better shape. Although there sounds like there is a plastic piece broken off inside the unit. Overall I would say the unit is not very durable. The plastic handle and head seem like they would be prone to breaking. After reading the reviews, I was a little disappointed in the solidness. The unit operates fairly well though. I used it on some shrubs that were overgrown and it did a decent job. It doesn't slice through the job effortlessly though. It is a light unit so its easy to handle. Over all I think its an OK unit, probably one of the better in its class. I was personally just disappointed as I thought it would be a stand-out and it is not.

    Editorial Review

This attachment for Ryobi’s 2- and 4-stroke gas TrimmerPlus units will extend your hedge-trimming reach--without making you teeter on a ladder. Because the attachment clicks onto the shaft of the gas-powered trimmer, you’re gaining at least an arm’s length in reach, with a powerful, precise hedge trimmer at the other end. The 16-inch replaceable blades run fast and smooth, and the unit is surprisingly well-balanced in hand. It’s superior, we think, to many of the cordless units on the market. The extra reach and secure control make this product a winner.--Kris Jensen-Van Heste ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Awkwardly Heavy
I purchased this a couple of years ago to add to my collection of add-ons for my Ryobi trimmerplus.I used the Ryobis for a few years on a small commercial basis (less than 20 lawns/week), so I feel I'm pretty familiar with the unit.I took on a job for a customer to tame their front hedges that needed to be trimmed back to 6' high.My issue came when after an hour of holding this thing above my hips, my shoulders felt like they were going to burn up.My arms were screaming at me and I still had a ton of work to do on this row.I used a 6' step ladder too.I'm no slouch when it comes to manual labor, but this was something I regretted buying from the getgo.

I cannot see any reason to buy this add on.Even if you buy it from Harbor Freight remanufactured, it still costs more than a quality electric trimmer. If you need something cordless, then research a battery operated unit (I have no recommendation here) or gas powered stand alone. If you only have hedges that are knee to waist high, then this is still an expensive add on over an electric trimmer.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not up to Ryobi Standard
Purchased the HS720R to trim of the high hedge that surrounds my property. Its not capable of doing the job effeciently.....it is easier to climb the step ladder and wack the scrubs with my Echo single sided trimmer.
The HS720R will cut, but mine requires that you go back n' forth several times to make the necessary cut, while the Echo takes just one pass.
Also, the length, combined with the power head is kind of clumsy to work with.

4-0 out of 5 stars Hedge trimmer Add-on
This is a very well made anddurable product. It attaches easily to the major portion of the Ryobi and has a very smooth action.Trimming just became a breeze. This 4-stroke Ryobi engine continues to start easily and with assurance too. Love not having to mix oil and gas with this one. ... Read more
