Not well designed
Two problems with this unit.
1. Light from your bulbs sometimes shut this thing off, causing lights to turn off.
2. Will not control a relay so that you can use high powered lights. Won'tbe a problem for homeowners though.

Good all-around detector
I bought this detector because I wanted to be able to turn on my front porch light when someone drove up in my large yard. I mounted it some distance away from the light fixture. The 3 timer modes, sensitivity adjustment, and photo cell features all combine to make this an exceptional tool in controlling outside lights. Easy installation

See the light only when you there
I installed four of these units - 1 in a hallway and three in individual bedrooms. I had to return one unit because it would not activate even after adjusting the sensitivity setting. Three out of the four I have installed work great! You just walk into the room and the lights come on. You feel funny at first since it is tough to break a habit of turning a light on and off. The last unit I have sometimes does not want to work in the overide mode (not activated by motion mode - just turn on). We like the units - especially with two teenagers. The installation is straight forward. You have to make sure that you are willing to wire switches and understand the necessary precautions while working with electricity (like ALWAYS tturning the circuit breaker off to the light switch you are changing the switch for. ... light hearted
I have two of these, one works great and one doesn't.The one that works is in the attic.No motion and no windows, when I stick my head up, it comes on.The other is in the bathroom and it faces a window.I think motion outside (trees...) turns it on.It was forever coming on in the middle of the night.There are two lights in the bathroom, the motion detecting light has been turned off for four years.I guess it's time to replace it with a regular switch. ... Got to have it
The Keypad is a must. It is very easy to use and install. Setting a temporary code is very useful when you grant someone access to your garage.

Works great so far
The motion detector works great when angled properly.Product works well and as advertised.Had unit installed for approx. 6 mos.

Unit won't turn off below 20 deg F
2 years ago I bought one of these.It has worked fine.This past summer I got another identical unit.It worked fine until the cold weather set in.Below 20 deg F it will not shut off once activated.Thinking it was defective I exchanged it for another.It too would not shut off below 20 deg.Next I purchased an ACE brand.When I opened the box I discovered it was made by the same source as the Heath-Zenith (Desa Int.) unit.I installed it anyway hoping...It too will not shut off below 20 deg.

Don't buy any of these units!If anyone has suggestions on another brand that will work in the cold please post it here.

How waterproof is the question
We had one of these for about a year, and it died.The motion sensor was the culprit.

I replaced the sensor & did a postmortem on the dead one.Egads, judging by the algae at the bottom of the sensor there was about 1 inch of water retained inside the case for a significant period of time.The bottom part of the circuit board was disgusting.

Judging from the case construction, the water got in via the 'lip' which is formed by the back of the case joining the front.There was no gasket around the lip, nor sealant around the entire perimeter, etc.

...furthermore, the adjustment controls are assuredly not waterproof.

Yet, to be fair, one could not build that circuit for that price.It is just the absence of a sealed case & rust proof screws which prevents the heath zenith from being a solid product.Desa handles the Heath Zenith stuff these days.

I live in Ohio, with a real winter, spring & summer - which may have contributed to the sensor's early demise.Caveat Emptor! ... Read more
