Keep your lungs and houseplants healthy with a large-capacity humidifier. This one has a 4-gallon upright tank in translucent gray plastic, a three-speed fan control, and a simple dial adjuster so you can find the right humidity level and keep it automatically. A red warning light indicates that the humidifier needs to be refilled, and a blue light indicates that the desired humidity level has been reached; in either case, the unit shuts off automatically. Its 15-by-12-inch footprint takes up more real estate than some equivalent humidifiers, but provides extra stability. --Richard Farr ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Filters get moldy, expensive replacement filters
Works fine, BUT the filter gets moldy if it dries out at all, then it's expensive to replace the filters.Running unit with any mold in the filter is an allergy risk.Find a model that is cheaper to maintain and monitor and doesn't pose a mold threat.

This company is a crapper outfit.lowball machine and then charge you 19.95 for filters etc .
Save yourself , from buying crap .It worked fair . I have a vornado , works an the filters are easy to find .

2-0 out of 5 stars Loud but works when it works
This humidifier is pretty loud compared to other ones I have used in the past.To get proper coverage in my 14x15 room, i had to turn it on high. After 1 winter season, it stopped cycling the water.I am now looking for a replacement.I would not buy it again. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This machine does the job.
Up here in the deep north it is essential to have humidifier if you have musical instruments, or anything made out of nice wood.I have tried several different options, and evaporative humidifiers are the best. This one has enough nice features to warrent an excellent rating. The main great feature is that it is easy to add water to the system. The tanks remove easily, and can be filled from the kitchen sink (they are too tall for filling in a bathroom sink). In the dead of winter expect to fill it daily, but fortunately this is big enough to only need filling once per day.Other nice features include a fan speed control (pump humidity in fast because you were gone all weekend and its dry), or quiet. At low speed settings you barely know its on.I also like the optional air cleaning evaporator. It apparently slows down air flow, but that seems trivial since the fan can simply be turned up. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Awkward Refillling / Poorly designed for cleaning
I purchase the humidifier 2 years ago. It is quiet, humidifies effectively. I am looking for a new model due to following reasons: 1. Leaky water tank (refill on the bottom) 2. Considerable amount of water remains in the system even after tank is empty and machine shuts off. If not emptied soon -> build up of mold. Emptying would be very cumbersome. 3. Cleaning of the inner unit is practically impossible (with many cravisses and corners and requires screw driver). After short use you are stuck with a messy unit with mold interior (you won't know it is moldy unless you completely disassemble the unit).
It would be no engineering feat to streamline the water channels and corners inside the machine and make it easier to fully clean.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good humidifier
A warm mist humidifier is perfect for cold weather or if your house islittle drafty. The biggest pain in any humidifier is cleaning it and this one is no different. To make cleaning easier, I started using water after running it through my Brita water filter. That way I got way few mineral deposits attached to the heating element.

1-0 out of 5 stars No Good - Leaky cap after 4 months
a) the unit is very awkward to fill - you have to turn it upside down with the handle on the bottom.Trust me - I'm strong - a wrestler, and it was a pain.

b) the main water fill cap started leaking after 4 months. It's not a screw-type cap, so you can't tighten it to stop the leak.Instead it's a twist-lock cap which you can't tighten.Bad engineering.

Bionaire then told me to buy a replacement cap for $10.00.No way ... Read more

Editorial Review

A handy appliance for all seasons, this WindChaser heater warms a chilly room in winter and cools it down on hot summer nights. The unit also includes optional humidification and oscillates to distribute warm air or improve room circulation. Operated with soft-touch buttons or the handy remote control and regulated by an electronic thermostat, the heater blows cool, warm, or hot air at either 1100 or 1500 watts. The 15-hour timer is convenient, enabling you to shut off the heater after you go to sleep or to work. All the controls are shielded by a transparent hatch to prevent you or a curious child from accidentally turning it on. Adjustable air vents let you control vertical air flow, and an air filter helps freshen up the atmosphere of your home.

WindChaser is especially thorough with safety devices on this model, programming in automatic shut-off after 20 hours, automatic humidifier shut-off after 6 hours, and overheat thermal cutoff protection. There's also a safety tip-over switch that cuts power should the heater get bumped or knocked over. The heater comes with a one-year warranty. --Emily Bedard ... Read more

Modern houses can turn you into a prune. Your skin, throat, and sinuses weren't designed to deal with dry artificial heat (or even too much dry natural heat). The Sunbeam-Oster cool-mist humidifier solves this common problem by allowing you to breathe easier, especially at night. You simply fill the plastic tank (the size of a tipped-over gallon milk container) with water and rest the plug-in mist unit on top. The humidifier produces a thin stream of cool mist to wet down your air all night. The tank has a small dip, or tray, in the top, just in front of the mist outlet, for medications. This humidifier measures 13 by 11 by 7-1/2 inches and fits inconspicuously in a corner. The tank glows in the dark, so you're not likely to slam an unsuspecting toe into it in the middle of the night, but in any case, the motor unit twist-locks onto the tank for safety. The Sunbeam-Oster 1387 operates for up to 12 hours with one full tank and has an automatic shutoff. --Richard Farr ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Only if you don't open the door...
We bought this for our son's room when he had his first cold.It was OK, but is slow to humidify the room -- by morning, the room was fairly moist. However, if you open the door (perhaps to check on the little one) all the moisture escapes and you have to wait a few more hours before the room gets humid again.I am going to buy real humifier...

3-0 out of 5 stars does the job but hard to clean
I had this humidifier for about a year, and it recently stopped running.I took it apart and found that the wires had corroded.I practically had to break the thing to get it open, and you can't get the calcium deposits out of the inside except through this microscopic hole, so I ended up banging it against my kitchen sink every few nights to get it out.It does work--it's warm mist, and it's not too loud. It'll last you one or two nights if you turn it off in the morning. If you can't spend a lot of money, go ahead and get this one because it does the job--better than not having one at all.

3-0 out of 5 stars Works Well When Cleaned Properly
Our family has purchased several Sunbeam Vaporizers over the years and have had good luck with these units. The Larger-tank unit is a better deal as it holds more water.
The unit produces steam which is why we buy them--steam helps to warm the air as it adds moisture and also kills any organisms in the water.More expensive cool-mist humidifiers do NOT kill bacteria and fungus and their cool mist cools the room temperature.
This unit requires regular cleaning to keep it working well--our water has much calcium so we clean the electrodes after every 2 or 3 uses.Simply scrape the scale from the electrodes and put the unit back in service. As the electrodes wear down, a replacement head unit for the device can be purchased direct from the manufacturer--no need to keep buying the water tank. ... For air-quality control year round, this three-in-one unit provides a warm mist humidifier, a dehumidifier, and an ionic air purifier. The humidifier outputs about 1/2 liter of moisture per hour, while the dehumidifier can remove up to 12 liters of moisture per day. Its ion generator cleans and refreshes the air with the help of the included DEW filter pad that eliminates 99.99-percent of bacteria on its fibers. The three functions can be used independently or all together to clean the air while maintaining the desired humidity level. Its water-tank capacity is only three liters, but the unit automatically protects against overflow and features a convenient indicator light that shows when the tank needs to be emptied or filled. The unit’s powerful reciprocating compressor is designed with an automatic defrost function that turns the compressor off when the coil temperature drops. WindChaser's Home Comfort Station measures 11-4/5 by 25-1/5 by 20-4/5 inches and works efficiently in spaces up to 27 by 27 square feet. Durable casters offer easy mobility. --Catie Unger ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Great having all functions, but reliability is just ok
This unit takes a lot of water out of the air in my basement, and shuts off when the tank is full. You can also hook it up to drain out a hole which accomodates a hose of some sort.

I am having a problem with it after only running it for a few months. The dehumidifier keeps shutting off, thinking the tank is full and it surely isn't. I played with the switch and gave the unit a bang and it started working again. Not confidence inspiring. For an item in this price range, it shouldn't have switch problems in the first 3 months. When it works, it works great. ... Read more

Designed for small to medium rooms, the Holmes Cool Mist humidifier offers light humidifying to improve the quality and comfort of air in your home. With a maximum daily output of 2-1/2 gallons, the unit features two power settings and a transparent 1-gallon tank with a built-in carrying handle. Mist fans out from the top grille after the water has traveled through a circular wick filter that traps minerals and deposits. A simple dial gauge on top of the unit indicates when the filter is in good shape or ready for changing. Both the humidifier and the filter come with Microban protection, ensuring that bacteria, mold, and mildew are inhibited from growing. Holmes recommends daily rinsing with this model, and weekly scale removal during regular use. Though not industrial-strength, the humidifier is easy to use and straightforward in design. 4-0 out of 5 stars Mom on busy street
I bought this humidifier for my 5 month old's room to help not only with adding moisture to our dry home, but to help drown out the noises of the busy street we live on as well as the sounds from within our house. It has made a world of difference! He has slept so well since I bought this.It works great. The high setting does have a louder hum, but I sleep in his room sometimes and have no problem getting to sleep. The only down side is having to buy filters. The cheapest I've found are $8.20 + shipping each and we need to probably buy a new one every 1-2 months.Great purchase otherwise!

3-0 out of 5 stars Does the job, but quite loud.
I spent a lot of time in the store looking over humidifiers, and finally decided on the Holmes.I like the design and features. The good point is it works very well at humidifying a small room. The bad is that it is VERY noisy. There's no way you could have it on high - it sounds like a jet engine. On low it is still quite loud.I have it in my son's room, and the white noise actually helps him sleep, but I would never be able to have it in my own room.If the noise isn't an issue, then this is a great humidifier, but I believe most people would prefer a quieter unit.

3-0 out of 5 stars Simply too loud.
I have had this unit for one week. I am returning it tomorrow because it is ridiculously loud. Forget sleeping--I can barely hear the TV over it! If noise is not an issue, then this item might still be a good deal for you. I paid $24.99, which I thought was a good price for it. The positives are that it holds 2.5 gallons, instead of the usual 2 gallons in this price range, and it has a built-in moniter to let you know when it's time to change the filter. It says it can run for 24 hours without having to refill the water. I did not test this aspect, as I only run it while I sleep (or at least that's my goal). Another negative is that it has a sticker attached that says to call an 800 number before using. Thinking it might be a safety issue, I called. It automatically records the number--with registered name--and address you call from and gives you a voice response sales pitch. That ticked me off. I just bought a Honeywell warm mist unit today. Hopefully that will be better for me! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This thing works great!
I have a 1400 sqft. home and this thing keeps my humidity up to 50% with no problems. Before it was 25%~50%.
I don't know why there is all these negative comments on this unit? It's quiet, I have it by my bedroom door and on low at night it just sounds like a very small fan, like one of those little clip on 4" fans you can get almost anywhere. It makes a little gurgle sound now and then but this does not sound very loud at all.
This unit has the permanent filters, which is awesome. It's so easy to take apart and clean also.
I like this humidifier very much and the blue led light that shines through the tank at night is cool!

1-0 out of 5 stars Noisy and Still Dry
The unit makes a very loud, very annoying whiny noise.Even on the lowest fan speed, I can't sleep with it on, and if I am watching tv, I have to turn the tv volume up to hear over it.I have tolerated the noise for a full two days now, and the humidity has only increased 2%.It took about 36 hours to empty its water tank, so it's obviously not very effective at getting the moisture into the air.And as others have indicated, the water in the base of the unit is getting a little grungy looking. One more thing I wish I had considered when shopping for a humidifier, is that some put out warm mist while others put out cold mist.If you are cold natured like me, avoid the cold mist ones!I shiver every time I walk past it.Maybe if you plan to use it in the summer this would be refreshing, but in the winter this is not only unpleasant, but it doesn't make sense to have something that blows cold air into a house you are trying to heat. The one positive thing I can say is that the night light looks pretty cool.

1-0 out of 5 stars big disappointment
I thought this humidifier sounded perfect--no filters, low noise, yearly cleaning. What a disappointment. It sounds like a constant running faucet and on any setting other than low, it sounds like industrial equipment. After one month, there wasslime and mildew all over the inside.I would never recommend it. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Frequent Wick Replacement
I have had 2 of these units for a month. One of them has been running at least 14 hours a day, 7 days a week. This unit already needs a new wick ($15 on the Holmes Website). I was hoping that the wick would have a longer life. I recommend that you buy extra wicks when you make your initial purchase.

4-0 out of 5 stars Clarification
Please note that humidifiers are rated not by their tank capacity but by a liquid equivalent capcaity; that is, how much liquid water the humidifier can output into the air per day.

4-0 out of 5 stars Works okay once you figure it out
Target's catalog claims that this humidifier's tank holds 4 gallons. It doesn't. Whoever wrote the listing was confused by the fact that the humidifier is rated to put 4 gallons of water into the air per day. But to do so you'd have to refill the tank, which I believe is actually 2.5 gallons. Handles on both the tank's top and bottom make this easier than with some other designs.

The "digital programmable" humidistat is a good idea that doesn't quite work as you'd expect. I don't know how it senses humidity, but if you turn up the fan speed, sometimes the first thing that happens is that the humidity reading goes down. This suggests that at lower fan speeds, the water vapor does not travel far enough away and that the humidistat gives misleading high readings. If you are using the humidistat to "program" the unit's fan operation, you'll have to second guess it until you arrive at a setting that accomplishes what you want. This explanation sounds complicated but that's the nature of this product.

The "filter check" feature is another mystery. A gauge in the lid somehow knows when the filter (the wick, in other words) needs to be replaced. I have no idea if it is accurate but you can figure out for yourself when the wick needs replacing. If you run the unit frequently you can count on needing at least one replacement wick per heating season. Target's price is good but they're still not cheap. One runs into the same problem with almost any humidifier, of course.

In any case, if you run this in a single room you can indeed make the air very moist, which is great when you have a cold, for example. It can handle multiple rooms if the weather is mild, but I wouldn't expect it to handle 900 square feet in winter, when the heat is on a lot.

I have tried many humidifiers over the years, and now own three Holmes units, two of them like this one. I like the evaporative wick design more than other approaches, and this unit seems pretty quiet and reliable. I suggest using a water treatment product to keep bacteria from growing (an issue with all humidifiers). You'll have fresh moist air whenever you need it. ... Read more
