5-0 out of 5 stars Great for the price
This planer performs very nicely and has plenty of power and a big plus it runs very quiet. It cuts nice and the bottom is nice and flat and so far no sniping. The dust chute picks up about 99% of the chips without a vacuunm. It came out of the box ready to use and completly set up. The guide is a nice bonus. The depth adjustment knob works smoothly and acts a nice front handle. The only thing that is a little difficult is cutting rabbits with the seperate rabbit depth adjustment. It includes a nice plastic case to hold the planer, extra blades, wrench, dustbag, edge guide, extra set of brushes, and extra belt. What was also nice is that the blades are reversible so it is like getting eight blades. The only down size and it is personnel, is that it is built in China.I would have been willing to pay a little more if it was built else where. It performs just as well as the more expensive models. After only owning it for three days I have already planed down 11 interior wood panel doors that were retro fitted into existing door jambs and it did not miss a beat. Using some shims and hot glue on the edge guide got my 3 degree angle on every door or just the edge guide and got a nice 90. How it holds up is another story, but since it is a Grizzly product I have no doubt it will. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Bad Instructions, Good Product
The editorial review @ Amazon states that this is a REPLACEMENT of the chip chute... THIS IS INCORRECT!The poor quality copy that serves as the instructions never states that you remove the existing chute--thanks to one of the Amazon reviewers for getting this right! It fits over the existing chute. In this configuration, the dust hood works well and is structurally stiff.Mine fit on the planer with no problems or modifications.

As far as performance is concerned, I even forgot to turn my dust collections system (1100CFM) on for one pass and the only chips that came out were towards the front of the machine; with the dust collection turned on the dust chute was every bit as effective as I thought it would be: almost no chips or dust in the work area.

2-0 out of 5 stars Bad Fit for the price
Sheet metal had to be rebent into the proper position to get it to fit.About a 45 minute job.

4-0 out of 5 stars A little flimsy for Delta
The metal dust hood is a little flimsy for what I usually expect from Delta. The instructions were photocopies of bad photocopies and were nearly useless. The hood goes over the existing chip chute, it does not replace it.This was not clear in the instructions. If you remove the existing chip chute to add the dust collector, it leaves the blades exposed. However, it is easy enough to see how it fits on the planer. The holes, etc fitted well.It works well and collects most of the dust and chips.I hessitated before buying based on other reviews.I think it works well for people using a dust collector with plenty of air flow.It probably does not work well if you are trying to use a shop vac.Overall, it's OK for me.I would not have minded spending a few more dollars if the quality was better. ... I also found this planer for a very good price, and 24 inch capicty is useful, anda great time saver because it allows you to plane 2 or more boards at once. I just wish there were more speed rates like on the powermatics, but it is good and for the price supurb. Its a very solid tool with plenty of power and well worth is especialy for rough stock, and also saves alot of money. ... Read more

Tarps kept in moisture and caused rust on my machinery. Plastic sheets fell off every time I turned on the air cleaner. So I tried one of these Tool Saver covers and quickly bought more for all my shop tools. They aresubstantial enough to stay put (with magnets in the corners that secure itto your tools), non-marring, and flexible enough to fold up neatly into anout of the way bundle. 4-0 out of 5 stars These are reliably good!
I installed these blades as replacements on my Delta 22-540 planer and was very pleased with how sharp they were and how easy it was to install them.Once installed these knives have done a great job for me on red oak, q/s white oak, pine, and poplar.

I have owned this planer for years now and I find that these double edged knives are a great value.By flipping them over when they get dull they last me a long time.

I used one side of the blades to plane pine wood. The boards were 4 in.wide, about 1/2 inch thick and approx. 6 ft long.I planes them down toabout 3/8 in.I did about 8 pieces.Allwent well but one board had manyknots in it and it chipped the blade.Seems great for wood with few knotsin it. ... Porter-Cable's Power Plane kit is a great tool for professionals anddo-it-yourselfers that need full-featured power planes without busting their budgets. It has abeefy 6 amp motor that spins the cutterhead at 14,000 rpm, producing smooth cuts evenin hard woods. Itfeatures an aluminum shoe with a V-groove for corner beveling. You can easily makedepth adjustments by turning the knob on the front and dialing up the desired cut depth. The full kit comes with a stout bevel fence, a rabbiting guide, carbide blades, wrenches, and a carrying case. --Brian Trinen ... 4-0 out of 5 stars planer
I have owned this planer for a couple of years, and it has been very helpful when I get in a tight situation and just need to take a little wood off.It can also take a deep cut in the wood, removing a large amount of wood with one pass.It is a light weight tool, and very powerful.

1-0 out of 5 stars porter cable blew it
I,m a long-time finish carpenter and have used the Dewalt and Makita planners as well as this contraption. This one's a dud. What's with pushing a button to pull the trigger? That's fine for Harry Homeowner, but odd angle starts are next to impossible. And that little ridge at the top of the handle is annoying and painful. Perhaps I missed something when rabbeting with the Dewalt, but with the PC you are advised to move the blades; what a pain. The Dewalt has a strange, not altogether likeable foot on the base for setting the thing down while the motor spins to a stop.No such feature on the PC.It is also poorly balanced. The Dewalt was user-friendly right from the box. If it weren't the boss's tool and the only one on the job I'd send the PC back. The only strong point is that the fence slot seems more durable than the cheezy holes in the thin plastic housing found in the Dewalt. Hold out for the door plane, is my advice.

5-0 out of 5 stars Solid well built tool
I've owned this tool now for about 3-months and have used it a quite a bit.I bought it to plane out bowed wall and ceiling studs prior to installing sheetrock (which is pretty tough duty because the wood is old, dry and hard).

Even pressing down hard at a full 1/8" depth, this unit cuts through wood and knots like a beaver. The motor keeps the blades spinning at full speed without bogging down.

Keep in mind that using a plane (manual or power) requires some practice and skill to perfect the outcome. You just don't slap it down on the wood and start cutting. Most attachments such as fences and guides will help provide some alignment assistance, but you'll still need to develop the skill.Once you get the hang of it, you'll find that it is a real time saver and provides far superior results over other triming, chiseling and planing methods.

Recommendations: * High Power - this is a must-have feature, anything less will be a source of endless frustration. * Heavy Weight - this is one of those times when you don't want light weight. You will need the mass to maintain constant travel and to keep the tool down on the work. * Parts Availability - Power planers are not very popular, so don't buy some goofy off-brand.You may need parts later such as replacement blades. * Safe(ty)... - Eye and ear protection is an absolute must with these tools. Not only do wood chips fly everywhere, they make a loud high pitched screech during operation. ... Editorial Review

When Porter-Cable recently reintroduced this popular planer, professionals everywhere rejoiced. It is widely regarded as the most solid, reliable, and effective hand planer on the market, and we heartily agree. While other tools boast speeds between 12,000 and 15,000 rpm, the Porta-Plane's beefy 7 amp motor runs at 22,000 rpm. Porter-Cable combines that power with a spiral-blade cutterhead that shaves the wood rather than chopping at it the way a straight blade does, producing smoother finished edges than those produced by other power planes. This model has a solid and true stainless-steel bed and integral fence, which bevels from 15 to 90 degrees. The price may seem pretty steep compared to other hand planers on the market, but in this instance you definitely get what you pay for. For pros that expect to do a whole lot of door trimming and hanging, there is no better tool available. --Brian Trinen ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars best door planer available.
If you plain on hanging doors for a living, or already do so.buy this planer.it will last forever.with the finger lever you can adjust the height as you plane to help follow high and low spots.

for 3% bevels it is perfect.one other reviewer mentioned about beveling a block to help set.great idea.but it only takes a few minutes or less to adjust bevel.

I have owned it for 2 years (since 5 2003) and have hung over 300 doors.

5-0 out of 5 stars No Better Palne for Doors.
Over the years I have tried lots of different ways to fit doors and have not really been satisfied with the end result until after buying this plane and the book "Door Hangers Handbook".The Spiral bit makes all the difference compared to my other straiht blade plane. The cuts are smooth and easy to control. The depth of cut lever is very easy to adjust. The Bevel fence feels real solid compared to other planes I've used.I bevel the sides of the doors to 3 degrees so I just cut a block of wood using my miter saw that has a 90 and 93/87 degree faces. This way I can set the plane to the bevel and back to 90 in a couple of seconds and it is super accurate. One last thing, this plane is much quieter than I thought it would be.I'm actually looking forward to doing more doors with it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Doors etc
My wife bought me this machine 25 years ago. I still have the plane, and the wife. It is (the plane) a sweet machine. It is primarily for resizing doors, but I have used it for a jointer of sorts with good success. If you are a door man/person (sorry) its the one for you. I assume it still comes with a carbide blade. If you want to surface plane, you want something else, but for up to about 2.5 inches this is the one.

Hope this helps. JA ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very sharp
If you wanna cut something, this is kinda kool!

Expensive a bit, but just a little bit (like mine after it touched the blade)

I should have sharpened them myself with a big mac since the meat is so tough so it can sharpen the blade.

    Hasta la vista!
    Buanaserrata, bonsoir

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't Wait Too Long To Change Your Blades!

I experienced a broken gear on my Dewalt planer.Since my planer was out of warranty, I went through the hassle of replacing it myself.

Immediately after doing that, I put a set of these blades on.

What a difference!I had not realized that my old blades had become dull. They were still doing a great job, but what I didn't realize is that the planer was pulling too hard now.It was working too hard to plane the wood with dull blades.

Once I changed the blades, the planer had a completely different sound.Sometimes, the motor speed doesn't even change when the blades hit the wood... that's how much difference the blades made.

And don't worry... the blade height measuring jig that came as part of your DeWalt planer makes the entire process easy as can be.

Don't wait too long, or you may be replacing gears too!

5-0 out of 5 stars Top Notch
Purchased this planer a little over 1 year ago, like all of my DeWalt power tools an exellent tool at a reasonable price. (I sound like salesman) I've run about 450bf of 4/4 rough planed red oak through it, but I must admit it's about time for the knives to be sharpend, to no surprise. I work it like you would a much larger non-portable planer and it holds up to the test. The single most thing that impressed me is that straight from the box the factory set-up was perfectly within specs and has stayed that way to this day. It's paid for itself many times over, and if I ever had to purchase another planer, DeWalt would be the first I would consider. Yellow and black are becoming the dominant colors in my shop. ... If it's time to step up from your benchtop planer, here's one to consider. Powermatic's 15-incher features huge, smooth-as-glass infeed and outfeed tables of cast iron and a newly design spiral cutterhead that offers a cleaner finish than traditional knives. There's no guesstimating on table positioning either--just look at the digital readout. We like the choice of feed rates and the angled dust port, because it keeps the hose clear of your work area without sacrificing collection. If you've been using a benchtop, you'll be pleased with the max thickness capacity of six inches as well as the relatively small footprint in your shop.--Kris Jensen-Van Heste ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Sweet Machine
I purchased the Powermatic 15S after my INCA planer/jointer combo gave up the ghost with the planer function.(The jointer still works great.)After unpacking, I went through the setup steps covered in the manual, which, by the way, is comprehensive and well written. My first dissapointment was to find that the supplied power cord is only about 5' long. You would think that with a $1600 machine they could give you at least 8' of cord!Replacing the cord was no problem, but an annoyance.(You also have to supply your own 220V plug, but that's understandable since there is a wide variety of 220V plug configurations in use.) The bed rollers seemed to be set correctly, so I fired it up and fed in a scrap piece of walnut.I have never seen a planer give so smooth a finish! And it's quiet!I don't know if the spiral blades are the reason, but I have never seen a straight blade planer perform this well.Time will tell how how long the blades stay sharp.I also planed some really curly koa; tearout was minimal and far better that I expected.Snipe was minimal, about .002"; you can feel it with your fingers but can't see it.

I did find one minor adjustment that the machine needed: when planing boards wider than about 4", the stock would creep to the left side of the bed.Nothing in the troubleshooting section covered this problem, but a phone call to the customer support number quickly solved the problem, which was to slightly reduce the feed roller pressure on the right side.

What prevented me from rating this machine with 5 stars was the digital readout.Unless you want to calibrate this device every time you turn it on, forget it.This evaluation was also stated by the customer service rep.It also measures in decimal fractions instead of 1/8, 1/16, etc. which is not the way most woodworkers think. On the other hand, the depth scale on the post is in 1/16 fractions and is dead on.I found that when using this scale I could duplicate board thickness within less than 1/64".If the choice was available, I would give it at least 4 1/2 stars!

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice Planer...
Planer came well packed...good thing because the trucking co. tipped it over.Fit and finish is close to perfect.Once set up, which for me, was next to nothing, I only needed to reduce the feed rollers tension by 1/2 turn, to get just about snipe-free cuts.I'm talking .002" of snipe.Using Oak, all cuts were very smooth and with the digital readout, accurate to .003".I almost didn't take the plunge with this planer, but I'm glad I did. It's a solid machine and should prove to be great tool.I would highly recommend this machine.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Results
I, too researched the product as well as I could prior to purchase. The good seemed to outweigh the negative, so I went for it.

The machine arrived undamaged and complete. Powermatic should look into hiring an American woodworker to write the technical mannuals for them. This one is composed by someone for whom english seems to be a bit of a stretch. That in mind, it contains most of the info you'll ever need if you supply the necessary adjectives and verbs-in-transitive.

Almost every adjustment on the machine needed some tweaking - knife setting, cutterhead-to-table parallelism, and the cast-iron tables needed a bit of shimming to true them up end-to-end.

I spent ? day tweaking before plugging her in, and oh my goodness...the dust collector makes more noise than the planer when she's cutting hardwood. I have been sitting on a 12" wide piece of tiger maple just to test the planer, and once I reset the lower rollers to eliminate all but about .003" of snipe (which can be reduced to .001" by applying firm hand pressure to the stock as it exits the outfeed table)the results were magnificent.

The finish cut rivals the $12,000 Martin digital planer that was in the last big shop I worked in.

The product this tool produces is worth the effort it took to fine-tune the machine after a somewhat careless assembly. I could not recommend this machine to someone who wants perfect results right out of the box, or someone who does not have digital calipers, 3' precision straight edges, or dial indicator guages about the shop. If you have some millwright blood in you, you'll do fine.

The machine is worth every cent of the purchase price to me. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Poor workmanship
There is no way that this long blade adaptor can be leveled with the horizontal stone on the 23-710 Sharpener. It too is a poorly designed piece of equipment. The support can not be lowered sufficiently and even then it is about 1/4" higher on one side of the stone than the other. It is obvious that little engineering went into this support. I can not recommend this to anyone. It is a pure waste of money as is the sharpening center itself. I finally gave up trying to make use if this unit and bought a Swedish made one. Now, that one is a great 5+ star unit.

4-0 out of 5 stars can't level as manual suggests
the only problem i had with this adapter is that the instructions in the manual for leveling it with the stones are incorrect.the set screws for the mounting bar go into a groove in it, so you can't rotate it.but, i simply spun the mounting bar so i DON'T hit the groove, and it's fine now.i'm not horribly THRILLED about that, but i can tolerate it. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars I found a lower price
Home Depothad them for $26.95. I bought all they had.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good value..
I've had my Delta planer for quite awhile now. In its lifetime it has had hundreds of board feet of hard and soft wood passed thru its portels. Much of this wood has been some of the hardest stuff on the planet. Mesquite, Quebracho, Vera, Mistol and white Oak just to name a few. I am on the first edge of my second set of knives. As in all planers, knife adjustment is critical, and with these knives it is as simple as tying your shoelace. Knives are sharp enough to shave with out of the pkg, and the locater holes make alignment a snap. Getting four cutting edges for this price makes the whole package a five star unit. I've had my problems with some Delta products, but this isn't one of them.Love the planer and love these knives. Highly recommend.

5-0 out of 5 stars Blades Last a Long time and are EASY to Install
I have been running the same set of blades in my Delta 22-560 Planer for over a year. I use them to plane quarter-sawn white oak and have done about 1500 board feet. The blades are still sharp. I have not yet felt a need toflip them. I did remove them once to see how hard it would be. The locatorholes in the blades made it EASY. The tight tolerence between the holes andthe locator pins insured a minimal (less than .002")runout. The onlypossible problem is that the two blades MUST be ground exactly the same, there is no method to fine tune the alignment. This is not really a bigproblem for most sharpening services. The price is quite good, I wouldcall them a good value. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Much better than any old tarp, any old day!
I used to use tarps in my old workshop, but they would hold moisture in, so I had to resort to keeping a layer of talcum powder on the surfaces of the tools to absorb some of the moisture away.

As I live in the South Jersey Pinelands, where it has been getting very humid lately, the moisture doesn't get trapped under the cover, but "breathes" right through, just like a top quality car cover, with the difference that it actually gets used regularly.

Oh, by the way, I still do the talcum powder thing, as it is an excellent non-staining lubricant for woodworking tools... better than light machine oil or waxes, both of which can stain the wood being machined.

5-0 out of 5 stars Protect your investment
Let's face it. The chance of any married guy getting a new machine becausethe old one is rusty or dusty is pretty slim. You've got to look after whatyou have. With that in mind, these covers do the job well! The jumbo easilycovers my table saw with outfeed or my 16" bandsaw. The fabric isheavy yet flexible, so you can easily toss it right out like spreading ablanket across your bed. Each corner has a magnet sewn in, so you canfasten it to any ferrous metal surface and it'll stay put. Dust can beshaken right off outside, and the cover protected my Laguna BS from arecent roof leak. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars why did i wait ????
i just hookedthis hood up to my planer and shop vac and ran a cedar board through from 3/4to 1/2 inch .the amount of shavings it didnt collect was negligable compared to the deluge of shavings i used to sweep up,the hoodis madeof steeland installseasily withthe screws supplied.as i previously stated,,,why did i wait so long to get this??? i highly reccommend this item.

5-0 out of 5 stars Works great - but use screws
The dust hood (which came with the 733 I got from Amazon, so don't buy an another one) works just fine.My regular shop vac has plenty of power.Only problem - I was depending on the tabs to hold it in place, and the weight of the hose caused the tab to break off after about a month.Called Dewalt, and they sent a free replacement, no question asked, and quickly. They recommend using the screws provided to secure the dust hood - which unfortunately blocks the outfeed shelf from folding up compactly ...

5-0 out of 5 stars Must Have for 733
You must connect a 733 to a dust collection system. This hood is extremely efficient and the 733 is the best.I've not bothered to permanently attach the hood, it slips on easily and stays in place during operation.I also have experienced some pitting as others have, but only on soft woods when I try to remove too much material. This is easily handled by making a final pass on each face at 1/32" leaving a mar free finish. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great beam planer
I have used this planer to trim down pressure treated rafters to match older beams when doing roof repairs after Hurricanes. The unit is heavy but very easily controlled. Plenty of power and precise adjustment make this a great tool when you need the extra width but can't use a stationary planer!

5-0 out of 5 stars Big Hand Planer For Big Jobs
This was expensive, but it really does the job.It was a lot bigger than I imagined, and is heavy too, but is easy to control and the depth adjustment is very presice. I use it to plane down wide table tops, made of boards that is glued together. It works great. The trick is to take very small bites with each cut. Then you can just move the planer back and forth leaving it rest on the wood. If you try to lift it up after each cut you'll wear out your arms.I go cross-grain first to take out the warp and width differences, then with the grain for the final finish. The results are very good -- hardly any sanding is needed.I ordered an additional set of blades for $31 from a local dealer since they weren't availalbe from Amazon. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The little planer that could!
I put this guy to the test with a project that should have been beyond it's limits and it performed like a star!Unable to remove the finish from some 85 yr old oak flooring by sanding or scraping, this planer saved the day.In a pinch, I actualy planed about 500 sq feet of oak flooring (in place) with this unit - a task greater than what it was designed for I'm guessing.Probably 40 hours of actual use on that project and the planer just kept going. Now, I did go through about a dozen blades in that process, but this planer (and my knees) took the beating and saved a now beautiful old floor. This is a great planer for a good price and while, yes, it only has one blade, it's worked great for me in everything I've asked it to do as a homeowner.

3-0 out of 5 stars Planer has only one blade.
I wasn't sure how many stars to give this since I have never used it.I ordered it and when it arrived I discovered that it is a one-bladed model. Bosch calls this an "electronically counterbalanced single-blade design."From the other reviews this seems to work well, however, I wish that the listing would have indicated this. Hence this little blurb. The extra blade "set" is just another single blade in a bubble pack.
Again, I have NOT used this machine, but have sent it back in favor of a two-bladed design.

5-0 out of 5 stars For the money, you can't beat it...
I purchased this planer hoping it would last at least a few jobs, and was pleasantly surprised.Lightweight, powerful, comfortable to use, and a smooth depth setting takes the guesswork out of it, unlike the Makita's, which I've owned, hated, and returned.A newly converted Bosch enthusaist, I have nothing bad to say, well, except for the lack of a case.Picky, picky, I know ...
