Don't Waste Your Money!
Kudos to Amazon for their quick delivery. Unfortunately, that's the only good thing that can be said about this safe. Purchased this mainly because of the Brink's name, but was disappointed with the cheap construction and plastic parts used in the lock mechanism. Within 24 hours the electronic lock stopped working altogether and had to resort to using the key to open the safe. Will be returning this tomorrow.

Works as advertised
This little safe works as it is advertised. The battery operated lock works well, and there is a key override system if the batteries fail. It is an easy way to keep secure passports, cash, jewelry, or other small documents.
However, this safe is not fire resistant, and any thief with basic lockpicking skills could open the key override lock. (on the flip side this is good if the batteries fail and you lose the keys, any locksmith can open the lock as well)
The best would be to secure the safe via the included bolts, otherwise, the safe can easily be carried out by hand. Like I mentioned before, it is a convenient way to keep valubles more secure than in an unlocked drawer, but not something to completely rely on. ... Read more

Math Class
In response to the review above, .6 cu ft. doesn't mean that the safe is six inches.That means it's .6 CUBIC FEET (H*W*D). The actual dimensions are 15.50 inches x 11.88 inches x 11.50 inches. Unfortunately the problem with this safe isn't the size, which is undeniably small. The problem is the safes walls which are only one thin layer are susceptible to an intrusion via hole saw.Any basic hole saw could come right through the top of this safe without much effort.The secret to defending yourself against this rather simple entry is to buy a safe with a "tiered" wall layout, (picture a wedding cake on it's side). This way the intruder will have to spend much more time trying to enter your safe, and more time for a burglar means a more intense amount of risk. And, a more secure place for your belongings.

packaging?
Apart from the fact this thing was stained and dirty, arriving in a flimsy cardboard box that was litterally ripped to shreds, the latch was bent out of shape and the color not as detailed in the image on this page, it appears to be OK. If you can find this in a store, go pick it up.

good for home use
I needed a fireproof file case for home use, to protect important documents such as insurance papers, titles, etc.After visits to several local stores and some on-line research, it is clear there is a large gap between professional equipment (two or more hours of protection, $500+ and hundreds of pounds) and home equipment (30 to 60 minutes protection, about $100 and 100 pounds or less).
The major competitor to this Brinks is a Sentry product.Both are rated for 1/2 hour fire protection at 1500-1600 degrees, but the Brinks is also waterproof for hours when completely submerged (what is the first thing the fire department is going to do when the arrive at your burning home?)As well, the design of the Sentry products in this price/size/protection range left a substantial gap between the cover and body of the case.Finally, the Brinks came with a removable caster system which makes it easy to move around (it's about 40 pounds).
The down side is that it's rated for only 30 minutes.Sentry makes a case rated for one hour, with a larger internal size, but it weighed 100 pounds and had no handles.I could barely move it, but it was waterproof and better constructed than their 30 minute case, so it might fit your needs closer than mine.
Both companies make several safes rated for one hour.These are harder still to move, and may be a target for thieves; I did not get one since I was interested in protecting files and not valuables.
If you are interested in professional level protection, include the brand "FireKing" in your search.
Obviously, I did not actually test the protection level of this case --hopefully UL did a good job.

I just want to add that subsequent to this review, I ordered one of these for my parents.While the product is great, the packaging for shipping was poor, and it appears I was lucky to receive mine in one piece.Twice my parents received a significantly damaged file safe, which was not surprising -- there was essentially no cushioning around the item.Even though it is well constructed, it cannot survive being tossed around in a UPS truck without proper packaging.Amazon's customer service was very nice to me, and promptly refunded my money after the second failed attempt to ship one intact.

Final thought -- until they fix the shipping issues, see if you can find this in a store. ... Read more

Good little safe
This is a good little fireproof safe, but there are some design flaws. Although there is a digital keypad, you still need one of the two 'slave' keys to open the safe. There is no handle, and the key itself actuates the lock mechanism after you enter the right digital code.
There is a 'master' key that opens the safeif the digital keypad doesn't work, or if you are the main owner and want to allow for employees to use the 'slave' key with the keypad combo to open the safe. You can change the digital combination easily once the safe is open.
The .6 cu foot space is really limited to some small items and paperwork, don't plan on storing too many items inside. ... Read more

Inexpensive Security
When I lived in an apartment, I once left a USB video camera on to see what happened when I was away at work.I fully expected to see my cat's antics trigger the motion censor.Surprisingly, I caught the maintenance man come in, change the air filters and leave, without leaving the required notice.Several other times, I recorded people entering my apartment looking around, then leaving.One turned out to be a government inspector; the other was a maintenance person preparing for the inspector.

While nothing was stolen, it was unnerving to say the least.I purchased the Sentry fire safe to store and protect birth certificates, checks, and my passport.

Solid quality and peace of mind at a superior price
This is the first safe I've ever bought, though not the first I've ever used. After reading JJ Luna's "How to be Invisible", I decided I should secure some of my own valuables and important documents better than I have been. I wasn't looking to spend a lot of money, but I wanted a solid product regardless. After looking over some of the more high-tech (and expensive) products with digital combination inputs and finger-print readers, I settled on the Grizzly G8697 safe. Why? For one thing, it requires no batteries, so there's one less thing to worry about. And the price is fantastic, easily comparable to the "fire safes" that, even though they can protect your stuff pretty well in a fire, aren't the sturdiest-looking safes I've seen. And if you choose a strategic location to place your safe, you can avoid a lot (if not most, or all) of the damage that could result in a fire anyway.
So, we have solid construction and great price. Well, there's also the extra security that's appealing. When I say "extra", I mean that instead of just a combination lock, or just a key lock, this safe has both; in order to actually open the safe, first you need to dial in the correct combination, and then you need to insert the key and turn it in order to slide the bolts clear and pull open the door. Yes, if you manage to lose all the keys, you won't be able to open the safe even if you know the combination, but it's pretty unlikely most people would manage to lose a whole handful of keys. With this dial and key combination, it means nobody can just pick the key lock and gain access, nor just dial the combination and gain access. Both are necessary, and it's unlikely that any burglar with that kind of talent will be in your neighborhood, unless you're rich, in which case you're going to buy a bigger, better safe anyway. For the average Joe, this safe is a really good deal.

One other excellent feature I'd like to mention is the in-wall mounting option. The safe comes with two metal bolts and plugs that will allow you to install the safe right into your wall (you'll have to take care of cutting the hole and proper stud location yourself, however). Hang a picture of your mother-in-law over it and you've got a well-hidden safe!

Last thing I'd like to mention: yes, a safety deposit box with your bank is a decent alternative to an in-home safe, but only for things that you don't use all that much. Do you really want to be running to the bank every time you want to access, say, your digital camera? Or that spare car key? Extra bank checks? Passport? Concert tickets? Probably not. Some things you would do well to store in your bank safety deposit box, though, are your safe combination (memorize it well) and extra keys; the safe is useless if these are locked in it and you forget or lose the combo and/or key, and worse than useless if you keep them elsewhere in your home and a burglar finds them and the safe.
