1-0 out of 5 stars Buy another brand of sander.
OK, it sands wood. But once it starts throwing sanding discs its all over. Yes, I called Porter-Cable's tech service, and did exactly what they said to do, and it still throws discs. The price tag for the repair parts delivered was over $30, and the results were zilch. So it sits on a shelf (I haven't the heart to throw my investment in the trash can), and I got a cheapie sander at Menard's for $25 that does just fine. Bottom line: Save your money, and buy a Chinese cheapie.

3-0 out of 5 stars It may sand good but replacement is the key!
It's funny, the sander works great! But my pad had to be replaced because it kept tossing the disc off the pad!Why is it that it is made to keep the sandpaper on and after using it for awhile it wears out?The pad is listed here at 17+ dallors......in the stores around here, they cost more!I'd rather find a product that does just as well and not be replacing a part that cost alot of money!

5-0 out of 5 stars Long lasting sander paper

1-0 out of 5 stars DON'T waste your money
I give this sander a zero stars but the case 5 stars. The sanding belts don't track, be prepared to buy lots of belts, it eats them. The dust collection doesnt work at all.I bought this at a home center and actually returned the first one and exchanged it for another Dewalt, giving them the benefit of the doubt.Same results "JUNK". Save your money or buy a Porter Cable or Makita.

3-0 out of 5 stars okay belt sander
I've owned this tool for over a year.I am a sculptor who uses this sander for various contour sanding, and some furniture work.Recently, I got the chord stuck in the rear roller, so I took the opportunity to take the whole sander apart and study its guts. What I like about the sander:1. nice, flat platten 2. variable speed 3. cord on top 4. good motor. Now, what I don't like about it: 1. dust collector is joke; I get about 15% to 20% efficiency--junk! 2. if the belt tracks off to the motor side, it is eaten up--way too sensitive. Some review states that 3-roller system is an innovative design--no--it's actually an old design--look at B & D Belt sander from 70's.This was a gift; but if I had to buy one now, I would go with Makita.

1-0 out of 5 stars disappointed
Well what can I say? I like most of the Dewalt line of tools, but if they made the rest of their tools like this one, they would go out of business quick! The tracking was eratic, vacuum dust control doesn't work at all-(unless you hook a shop vac).
And for the real clincher---the back drive wheel shaft started wobbling and vibrating after about three hours of total run time.
I checked for a loose bearing or bolt but the wheel wouldn't move by hand, no play at all, which shows that the run-out was caused by the axle shaft bending-most probably due to poor metal quality. Took it back and got a porter cable 352vs--which so far has performed great after many hours of use. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars My most used tool.
I hate sanding just like you, but this sander makes it a lot easier. The orbital action is excellent allowing rapid stock removal while leaving the surface very smooth. The variable speed is great for delicate jobs or tight corners. The extra long cord is also a plus. The contour attachments work well (on or off the machine) but the sleeves are pretty spendy. If you look around on the web you may find them on sale from time to time. Stock up if you do. The only other concern worth mentioning is the diamond shaped sanding pad. The hook and loop paper sticks to it so well that you need to use care when removing the paper so as not to rip the pad from its base. Overall this is the tool I use most often in my wood shop and I really like the job it does. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

DeWalt's 3-by-21-inch belt sander is a popular choice with do-it-yourselfers and many professionals, as well. It has a 5.2 amp motor with electronic speed control that keeps the belt speed constant under load. The variable-speed dial is easy to use and recessed well enough to prevent unintended adjustments while working; however, it's located near the rear of the handle, making on-the-fly changes a little tricky. DeWalt mounted the dust bag on the front of the sander, and while this allows the tool to be used in tight spaces, we found that the arrangement forced us to work directly above the sander in order to maintain good visibility. As the tool heats and cools, expanding and contracting, the self-tensioning system adjusts the belt to prevent slippage. We found it to track well from one operation to the next, requiring little adjustment. This is a great sander for do-it-yourselfers and most professionals, but it's not quite as burly as the biggest 3-by-21-inch belt sanders on the market. People who intend to use a belt sander for the most strenuous tasks should consider a model with a bigger motor. --Brian Trinen ... Read more

I am an occasional user.I've used my sander for approx 10 times. The motor burned up today.I was sanding 3 sheets of plywood with 60 grit paper, when all of a sudden it siezed up.Of couse I've had it longer than the warranty, but it should last under the conditions I use it.Will consider before buying Dewalt again. Also, the dust bag is a joke.It collects maybe 20% of your dust.

1-0 out of 5 stars belt sander
The dust colecter does not work at all. Will not pick any dust. I will not use it again. Own other DeWalt tools that are good, but this one is JUNK.

2-0 out of 5 stars Dust Bag Issue
I purchased this belt sander about 5 months ago and found that it lives up to the product claims and design with one basic flaw, the dust bag. As you can imagine, a belt sander removes material aggressively and wood dust is the obviously byproduct.

It didnt take me long to realize that none of the dust was being directed into the bag and perhaps this is due to a design flaw if in fact the designers gave this feature any thought. On the good side, you never have to empty the dust bag because it has no function since all dust is left on the work piece or shot into the air for potential breathing.

If dust collection is a concern of yours, perhaps a different model or manufacturer would better suit your need. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Not a good fit for my band saw
I bought the Delta 28-206 14" enclosed base band saw, and the Platinum accessory package which included the 50-274 mobile base. There were instructions on how to assemble the base, but not on how to attach it to my band saw.It looked like it was supposed to replace the 4" thick base that came with the saw, but it didn't fit.It was about a 1/4" to narrow for the band saw base to fit in it.I solved it by putting the regular base back on, and drilling holes in it to bolt the mobile base to the standard base. With 8 bolts holding it in place it is solid enough, but its about 4 inches higher than normal.Since I'm a tall guy its not a problem for me. The mobile base is still a great idea though.I have a standard 2 car garage for a shop, so the ability to move my stuff around is really important. This base works like a dream.I'd recommend it, just be aware you may have to do a few modifications to mount your equipment.

1-0 out of 5 stars This mobile base does NOT FIT the new Delta 14" 28-206 BSaw
It's a great and well made base but unfortunately it does not fit (despite its description of "fits all Delta 14" bandsaws) the new Delta 28-206 bandsaw. You could make it work by bolting a square of plywood to the mobile base then attaching the saw to that. Kind of a pain.

5-0 out of 5 stars Protecting your valuable woodworking machinery
A couple of years ago, I experienced a water line leaking above my Unisaw.By the time I discovered the leak, the cast iron table top and extension had started to rust. I immediately got a Delta Mobile Base to move the saw. I have been so pleased with the setup that I decided to purchase a mobilebase for the 14" band saw.My bandsaw is an older model without theblack metal casing at the bottom of the enclosed stand.Despite thesmaller dimensions of my bandsaw at the bottom, the fit in the mobile baseis good, although I may add some 1" lumber (thickness) around thebottom perimiter of the stand to create a tighter fit.The foot lever forelavating the base is easy to operate and when engaged, the base easilyrolls on two wide wheels. When stationary, the base is very stable.Whether you need a mobile base due to limited shop space or as a means forprotecting your equipment from overhead water lines, I strongly recommendthis base - even for older Rockwell/Delta woodworking equipment. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Good and Bad
We use these in a professional environment, where they run several hours a day. My quick thoughts:

1.The weight and balance is good - this is a nice lightweight tool, especially compared to its competitors.

2.The dust collection works adequately, far better than its competitors

3.Durability has been spotty - we have some that have lasted several years, one only lasted 2 weeks before the brushes overheated and melted into the case.

    3a.Noisy.

4.In this class of sander, there are few choices which are suitable for professional use.Since we do a lot of delicate furniture work, including veneer sanding, we don't want huge heavy sanders. We value good balance, light weight, dust collection, and durablity. It doesn't cut it in all respects, but its better than the other sanders in this size that we have tried.

5-0 out of 5 stars Powerful, yet light enough for one hand operation
When I started remodeling, I need to sand the stairs. There are 17 flights covered with varnish, paint under linolium. After stripped the linolium off, I need to sand the threads to bare wood to refinish. These are made of fir, usually they are very easy to sand. But with the varnish and glue left over, I tried all my three sanders, two random orbit sanders, one 1/4 sheet sander. They all work very slow. I got only two flights done after an hour and used many sanding discs and paper. Then I decided to try something else. I have never had or used belt sander before. It seems that's the only hand held sander available for me. So I went to store to compare various belt sanders. I own other DeWalt tools as well as Porter Cable's, so they are the first came to my mind. After comparison, I like the DeWalt one better for its weight and handling. It was a surprise that only took me two hours to finish the rest of the stairs all together and used only one sanding belt (still lot of sanding left on that one belt). Still need to use other sanders to finish off the tight spots. I used one of those "rubber" abrasive belt cleaner when the belt got clogged up with stuff, press the stick on while it's running up side down, the belt gets cleaned and became like new in seconds. It is a very powerful sander, you can gauge the wood easily if not careful, like press hard while moving side ways. But I manage to control it pretty well even with one hand since it's not heavy. It becomes hot after intensive use just like any other power tool. Avoid touching any the metal part is a good idea. The dust bag could've been made of better fabric since the dust will go through the bag and come out during heavy sanding. It catches 90% of the dust though. It would be nice to have a port like their biscuit jointer to hook up ShopVac or dust collector. Porter Cable ones have those for the dust bags. So you can have the choice. I will get the sanding frame add-on for more delicate sanding.

Over all, it's another fine tool that you would expect from DeWalt. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Died the first day!!
Just got the Makita 9910 3"x18" belt sander.First day, on my third sanding belt, alternating with my Fien Multimaster, it just flat out quit! The motor ran but no belt drive.I popped off the side cover, and saw a punky little drive belt in shreds. Talk about cheesy! While it was working, it was OK. Not very powerful for a belt sander, but for the size it is easy to handle. The dust bag is good. But that doesn't matter if it can't stand up to a little use.

5-0 out of 5 stars It does its job - how boring ;-)
I was replacing a window yesterday only to discover that the frame of the new window was an 8th of an inch wider than the original.Of several options I had to widen the opening I decided on using a belt sander. So it was off to the home improvement store.I didn't want to spend too much and knowing I was going to be holding the sander to a vertical surface for a long time I stayed away from the big ones.Three hours and three 40 grit belts later I had the window in.It did it's job.The belts went on and off quickly, easily, never needed centering adjustment and it was a reasonable weight to be holding out in front of me at arm's length.Like a tool should, it did it's job, solved the problem and didn't cause any.

4-0 out of 5 stars small but good
When I compared its platten (the part of the sander which presses the belt against the work) to those of larger sanders with 3 x 21 belts, I realized they were about the same size. But this sander is lighter than those larger sanders. ... Read more

Because shop disc sanders are often used for quick little jobs, they tend to not get hooked up to a dust collector with every use. This new model from JET solves that problem by including its own built-in high airflow dust collection impellor and 2-micron canister filter. Any time you turn it on--whether for 15 minutes of serious sanding or 30 seconds of cleaning up a saw cut--your dust is collected and your shop air stays clean. The machine runs on a 1-horsepower, totally enclosed, fan-cooled motor that provides ample power for any sanding task you come up with. It has a hefty 12-inch steel disc, with a manual brake for quickly slowing it down and stopping. You also get a generous cast-iron table that tilts from 90 to 45 degrees, along with a miter gauge and circle jig. All in all, this is a great sander at a great price that will provide a long life of service in your shop. --Brian Trinen ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Hook & Loop is fast and easy!
I have been using the 7335 sander with this hook and loop pad for years. Some people complain about the holding power, but I use 60 grit discs regularly with no problems (maybe vaccuuming out the pad from time to time would help them). In fact, I just bought my first replacement pad only because a "helper" sanded without a sanding disc and wore off the hooks.
The hook and loop system allows quick changing of sanding discs as well as disc reuse. So you can quickly go from rough to fine sanding on individual pieces, and save the discs for the next job. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

If your workshop doesn't have one of these combination sanders, it's probably because you don't think you need it. But put it to work once, and you'll realize you can't get along without it. Its uses are endless. You know those tight curves and angles you have to sand by hand? Not anymore, thanks to this Shopmaster sander. The automatic belt-tensioning and tracking controls are conveniently located and easy to use, and the built-in power takeoff for a flexible shaft accessory (sold separately) is a great extra touch that allows you to accomplish any number of additional tasks. Finishing curves or odd-shaped work is a cinch when you remove the belt platen, and you'll even be sanding chamfers and bevels just by tilting the sturdy aluminum tables on both the belt and the handy 5-inch disc sanders. The included miter gauge allows you to sand at compound angles, too. The side panel removes in a blink to change belts. The 1-inch belt sands 3,150 surface feet per minute powered by a 1/4-horsepower induction motor. A built-in dust port allows connection to your dust management system. --Kris Jensen-Van Heste ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Delta can do better.
For the price of this tool I expected it to be a little more finished looking, instead of a import tool with the Delta name pasted on it. Does it work, yes. However, as I found out too late, I could have ordered a 1" belt sander from Grizzly without the 5" disk for $49.00 and would have had an import tool that was green and worked, for $40.00 less.

4-0 out of 5 stars nice tool but messy
The fine tool comes equiped with two exhaust ports that "should" connect to a shop vac, but in Delta's wisdom, these ports do not match any standard Vacuum size hose and there is no adapter Accessory to allow you to do so. Silly way to design a tool that makes a mess but it does work fine as a sander.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great little sander
I really like this sander. I am a hobbyist knife maker and use it for handle shaping. It is perfect. The only thing I might change on it is the disk, could be bigger. It fits neatly in the conrer of my work bench and is light enough to move around as needed. Replacment belts and disks are easily obtained from woodworking stores. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars It's worth it
Though this shoe does cost considerably more than the normal shoe, the extra dollars are worth it. The graphite really prolongs the life of the show and saves you considerable energy and irritation by allowing you toleave one show on your sander for most (if not all) of its lifetime. To §umup, the extra $ paid for this product is more than made up in quality andlifespan. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Conveniance in Sandpaper
This 4 pack in PRECUT sandpaper is a great boon to the Performax 16-32 drum sander. The sandpaper easily locks in place at the right angle and perfectly rolls up on the drum sander to create the perfect sanding operation.Changing sandpaper grades is quick and simple with the precut sheets. The 100 grit is perfect for a medium finish with about a 1/64" stock removal per pass.

The precut paper is easy to work with, and quick changes when going from rough cut to final finish. With proper care and alignment, the paper last for several thousand board feet of sanding. If the paper becomes overlapped on the drum, it will create burn marks on the wood and weaken the paper on the overlapped edge, also reducing the productive life of the paper.

I'll spend the few bucks more and let Performax cut the sandpaper to the exact angles needed for perfect drum fit. ... Read more
