This hose sucks.
This is the most ridiculous contraption ever invented.It can't be used without being completely unrolled and removed from the reel holder.The hose kinks terribly and its exterior seems to tear quite easily.And re-rolling it is extremely difficult.It takes two people and a lot of time.I wouldn't accept another one if someone paid me to take it.What a waste of money!It deserves negative stars.

My father bought me one of these as a house warming present.After two uses the thing split at the seams and started squirting water everywere.Also they don't tell you that you have to make sure every drop of water is out of the hose before you can store it again.I suggest buying a good non-kinking house and a good hide-a-hose box it works great and looks nice. ... Gardena rules
Yes, it's very good, nice feel to it, like all Gardena stuff.I've had one go "out of tune" and no amount of fiddling with the works would make it go full volume again.The method of tying down the activation bar with a wire loop isn't as sturdy as it might be.Quibbles, I own one for every faucet.When they converted Eagle Hardware to Lowes they quit carrying Gardena.Just one more reason that every time I visit Lowes I wonder why I bothered.

very cost effective product
I've had 2 of these timers for several years. not only do the 2 AA batteries last a full year, i figure i've saved hundreds of dollars over their lifetime in wasted water. they are versatile, inexpensive and highly functional. i won't duplicate the functions here, since others have detailed the capabilities. i will say however that they are a real "time-saver" and "money-saver"! Programming is a bit tedious but otherwise, i love mine!

excellent for price
bought mine for $16.Unlike other reviewers, have found 1 set of baatteries sufficient for at least 1 year.Plastic hose connectors are the weakest link, but, has been excellent for flower beds for the last two years, thus far.(Have permanent system for entire yard, but not the front foundation beddings.)I use this mostly for the annual flower beds with drip and/or soakers.

A saving grace - especially for multi colored thumbs
Set it and forget it! This timer literally saved our lawn and garden. After using one on the front yard and having fantastic recovery results, we got three more for the backyard... and now have them all offset by an hour each, watering every third day or so - keeps the grass and flowers happy.

Love the default early morning watering - no forgetting about it or watering during the hot part of the day.

One of our four timers seems to go through batteries like nobody's business. There's nothing blocking the valve, but it lasts about a week on two AA's before needing to be replaced. Think I'll send it in for a replacement.

Highly recommended!

Though yes, you do have to be careful with following the programming instructions very carefully - it's easy to get confused - make sure you know what schedule you're on and which one you want... and then always make sure it's running in Auto mode... If someone wants to do a 15/30 minute temp valve open to do some afternoon watering - and they don't set it back to Auto when they're done, then no more auto watering for you!

plastic elbow connection
the hose reel itself is ok, but the problem we have had is the plastic elbow itself splits. it has happened twice, the first one split during cold weather, after i had drained it, i ordered one from the factory and it split again this past winter, again after i had drained it. it split right in the 90 degree bend. now i need one and apparently they aren't available or are they. can the factory help????????? The reel is easy to use however it doesn't last -- the handle broke after a couple of years.

We were suckers
Magna advertises this product as virtually indestructible.I wish, too, that we had seen the reviews before buying it.On the first use, the hose sprung a leak.

Is there a way to get our money back?I can't find any sign of Magna online... except to sell this indestructible hose.

This hose is not very durable I only used it a few times and it busted and I can't find any place to get a connector to fix it.

I brought this hose after a girlfriend suggested it,if you only need a small amount of hose I suppose it might work fine.I brought the 75 foot length,and ultimately need to unwind the hose completely.Poor water pressure and trying to wind this hose back up is a workout, what a joke, wish I had read these reviews before I wasted my money. ... Saved Us $100s, But...
I purchesed 5 of these last year, and they worked as advertised.They shut off very nicely, saving the pipes, and are generally accurate as timers.We have a large yard (.8 acres) and this product saved us several hundred dollars last summer alone.I too searched extensively for a similar product, and there are no direct (mechanical) competitors that I know of.

However, I agree with several of the previous reviewers--the construction could be more robust.Last year, one timer mechanism gave out, and over this winter, one split (my fault for letting it freeze).A third sheared off at the input side when I tightened it down on the spigot.

Being mechanical, I took one of the broken ones apart to see how it works. It uses a standard diapharam valve that keeps water from the timer mechanism, and looks adequate to the task at hand.Overall, the design is quite effective.

Having said that, I am going to replace them this spring with more of the same, as I love the design concept which, I will repeat, works exceedingly well.I do take measures to protect these timers:I put one of those 10 inch flex extenders and a 50 psi pressure regulator (one of the inexpensive passive types) in front of each timer.This helps to minimize the risks to the timer.The combination works well, and makes our busy life just a touch easier.They are worth the money, even with the noted problems.

UPDATE April 2005: (2 STARS)I bought two more this spring, and the design has changed.Its a very different case and, I speculate, a somewhat different mechanism.They turn off hard with this revision, slamming the pipes, not soft and slow as the older ones did.I will be looking elsewhere for replacements, though I still like the design CONCEPT of a simple mechanical timer.Your milage may of course vary.

Yes, but...
This is a simple design of an essential device that every gardener needs --- no fancy dials or lights, and it is mechanical!Unfortunatly, the quality/durability of the product is not that great. I have purchased and used more than a half-dozen this past year.When it works, it is great, but often it fails as the result of plastic fractures, broken/jammed timer, leaking connections.I have not seen a better design, but I will keep looking.Until I find one this will be my choice despite its shortcomings.

Great idea but plastic junk
Bought this less than 8 months ago. It works well but now the collar that screws onto the hose bibb ("the spigot", for those who are plumbing-challenged) has cracked. I had a flood in the backyard for that probably went on for 2 days.

ROLL-A-JUNK
i needed to see for myself & the critics were RIGHT!no pressure & you had to unroll the entire hose...try rollong it back with water???good luck - if there was any dirt stuck on the hose itself, you can't reel it back unless you clean it.more hassle than it was worth...i bought a 75' lightweight recoil instead - and it was cheaper!

LEAKED after FIRST USE
I thought this was a great idea and purchased two hoses initially.The first hose leaked after the first use.I gave them the benefit of the doubt until the second hose leaked after the first use too.This is a good idea however not a good product.I thought it had a lifetime warranty but of course can't seem to find the paper work now. I have since gone on line to http://www.ontelproducts.com however the part number RAH-MC6 can not be found.I wish I had read the reviews below before I purchased this hose.

Finally, a quality garden hose reel
This is a very nice, solid hose reel giving every appearance of quality manufacture and the promise of long life. It was easy to install, doesn't leak and actually winds up all 150' of water-filled hose without falling apart. My previous plastic reel with the 5-year warranty started to disassemble itself in the first year. By the end of the second it was in the trash.

Finally, a quality hose reel
After suffering through several plastic reels that my wife, kids, and the sun all conspired to destroy - I found this.This reel just oozes quality. It's manufactured and supported domestically.It was easy to install and it reels very very smoothly.It has also passed the kid-jump-on-it test.Expensive, yes!Worth every penny? You Bet!
