Editorial Review

Toss your dado shims. You’ll never tuck another scrap of newspaper between your dado blades again. Freud’s ingenious hybrid dado cutter is a cross between the traditional stacked set and the convenience of the dial dado. The stacked sets make gorgeous, flat-bottom dadoes, but sometimes achieving the perfect width is a challenge. Woodworkers had resigned themselves to slipping scraps of paper between the chipper blades, experimenting to get just the right measurement. Those who tired of that opted for the dial wobble blade, which got you the right width with just a turn of the wrist, but you sacrificed greatly on the integrity of the cut, ending up with convex and concave dadoes at opposite ends of the width spectrum. Enter Freud’s brainchild, combining the best of both dado worlds. The micro-grain carbide-toothed cutters and chipper blades stack like a regular set, but that done, the dial adjusts the width to four one-thousandths of an inch. You can’t beat that with a scrap of paper. Great innovation in a flawless execution—-bravo, Freud!--Kris Jensen-Van Heste ... Read more

  • Precision-ground arbors to ensure precise blade alignment
  • Dial hub for shim free adjustability
  • Lazer cut blade plates for extreme accuracy
  • Micro grain carbide is specifically for glue line rips to ensure superior cut and maximum life
  • Tri-metal brazing for impact-resistant tips

5-0 out of 5 stars Freud is top shelf in my book
Excellent tool with superb craftsmanship.Freud is top quality in my book.

3-0 out of 5 stars I recommend paying extra for better
I used to do all of my ratteting and dado cutting with various size straight/rabbet router bits and a homemade jig/guide fence system.I figured I'd bite the bullet and buy a dado blade. After doing some research and getting over the sticker shock of the average $200-$250 price range for most dado sets, I figured that I go for the SD208 for only $90.I figured that since it is from Freud, it can't be all that bad, no matter how much cheaper it is than the other models.Overall, I think the SD208 is a good buy COMPARED to all of the other dado sets and their prices of 2-3 times more than the SD208.More specifically, here are my thoughts:

POSITIVE:

1) The storage/carrying case is great.Durable plastic with an arbor-like post to mount the blades on.

2)Price.As I said, this blade is a comparatively good deal compared to other sets in the $200-$250 price range.

3)Shims are included. From what I've been told, some sets don't include shims.I can't verify that, but this set does indeed include shims.I believe there are 5-7 differenly sized shims.

NEGATIVES

1)My biggest gripe with this set is that the bottom of the cuts are far from being flat.Whether using the outerblades by themselves, or using them with different configurations of chippers, each cut bottom has multiple ridges/blade marks.

2)Shims aren't size labeled.Freud gives a great little chart showing what size chippers and shims are needed for differentcuts. However, the shims aren't labeled at all. They are merely blank circular cuts of metal. However, as any woodworker knows, you should always run your own test cuts for any job...so I'm in no way livid with Freud. It would just be a little nicety if they could label the shims.

As I said, I think the SD208 set is comparatively a great blade for its price, when viewd against other sets. However, I would recommend not skimping on price and upgraded to one of the higher-end Freuds or a Forrest set.

3-0 out of 5 stars Try to get it sharpened
I run a small woodworking shop and I purchased the Dial-A-Width Dado.I think it is a great dado, but it has a -12 degree grind on it.Every sharpening shop in Denver cannot sharpen it without buying an expensive computer program for their machines and they will not buy it unless they can make enough off the sharpening to pay for it.I called Freud about having them sharpen it and they said they are not in the sharpening business.Buyer beware. ... Solid performance and serious convenience--that more or lesssums up DeWalt's cordless combo kit. With two XRP extended run-timebatteries and a one-hour fast charger, you've got the foundation forhigh-performance, long-lasting equipment, and DeWalt doesn't stopthere. The heavy-duty, 18-volt, 1/2-inch drill/driver/hammer drill willdo up to 2,000 rpm and 34,000 beats per minute, and can produce 450inch-pounds of maximum sustained torque. The carbide-tipped chuck jawshave excellent bit grip. There's also an automatic spindle lock, aswell as an antislip comfort grip. We were especially impressed with thebalance of this hammer drill--its T-handle design distributes weightevenly so it's easy to hold, even over long periods of time, and thegrips seem to work for people of all different hand sizes. Theheavy-duty, 18-volt reciprocating saw offers a keyless blade clamp for quickblade changes, a pivoting shoe with an open top for maximum visibility, and a variable-speed trigger for blade control. The saw also has anelectric brake. It's an accurate tool, and the grips--especially thefront one--provide excellent user control. This reciprocating saw makesup to 2,800 spm, and has a 7/8-inch stroke length. It weighs only 6.5pounds, and because it's cordless, there simply isn't a better optionfor working in tight spaces or above your head. The kit also includes atough plastic case that will hold both tools and the charger.--Jonathon Tudor ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars High quality and heavy duty
Nice functionality on drill and hammer function.
Lots of torque and battery life is remarkable.
I am right-handed and have large hands which means that I have to use care to fully depress "forward" button when changing from "reverse" to "forward" (it is a little awkwardly positioned). I did have difficulty engaging the hammer function one time, which sorted itself out after switching from "forward" to "reverse" and back again...

The saw is a dream with regards to weight, balance and power.
It does however, as everyone says, use up the batteries quite quickly (more than 4 long diagonal cuts of a 2x10 will kill a battery). But remember, it isn't expected to compete with a normal AC power tool...

I would recommend that Dewalt sell this kit with one of the normal heavy duty 18V batteries and one of the extra heavy duty batteries to make the kit even better.

4-0 out of 5 stars Heavy Power
This is an excellent combo with more power than most people will need for the job.The drill is the heart of the deal with the drill alone retailing for only $100 less than this kit.It has 450 inch-pounds of torque, which is enough to ripe the head off an unsuspecting dry-wall screw (this is great! nice power). The chuck and grip are well designed. If these tools have a draw back it would be the price (a bit on the high side) and weight (there are not light...which feels good, but what about the end of the day?), but ultimately these tools are comfortable, powerful, and really loveable. ... Who wants to install 400 feet of crown molding? We'd be thefirst to volunteer, as long as we get to use this finish nailer.Weighing fewer than 4 pounds, it's light, ergonomically pleasant, andhas a great line of sight. We really like the depth adjustment on thismodel, an easy-as-pie five-position vertical slide right next to thetrigger. Nails load in a second, and you have the nice option of lockand load, or load and lock--something we think every nailer shouldoffer. Jams clear in no time without tools, another feature that showsoff DeWalt's attention to detail. The pad is high quality and didn'tmar anything we tried it on. Speaking of trying on, we looked great inthe cool, mirrored safety glasses included in the kit, and we're sureyou will, too. --Kris Jensen-Van Heste ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Good when it works.4 service trips in 10 box of nails
I bought this when it was on sale @ Home Despot when it first came out and there was a promo on.Let me preface this and say this one has been used by 3 or 4 of us home owners to put in baseboard, crown, and casing as well as a bunch of nailing on some hardwood floors.

Let me also state that I have $2k worth of other dewalt tools that work beautifully. This is the first and last pneumatic tool though.

I noticed that it did have a bit of a tendency to double tap. After using it a short bit, I lent it to a friend. He had a jam (we're both been using nothing but Porter Cable nails) of some sort that broke it.Being a good guy, he assumed it was his fault and paid $80 to have it repaired.

I got it back in working order, and then promptly had it break again. This time, I called Dewalt service and they said it was an early model and they would replace the piston which had been replaced in later models. They tested it and returned it to me working.

I ran through less than a strip of nails, and went to do something over my head, and discovered that it wouldn't fire upside down.Another trip back to the service center, and it was fixed again. When I took it home, I discovered that they'd replaced my sequential trigger with the other type.

Arrrggh.

Anyway, when it works, this nailer is nice and lightweight. It sets nails beautifully.I'm not fond of the composite nail strip, nor the depth adjust and safety mechanism.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best finish nailer out there!
My company installs hardwood floors and this is the best finish nailer out there. I also have 3 Porter Cable DA250B angled finish nailers and they would be my 2nd choice but have had more quality problems with them. The Senco sfn 35 was junk but the SFN 30 is OK as is the SFN 40. But I would still pick the Dewalt for the best finish nailer. We shoot through some tough wood species and while the Senco and Porter Cable nailers have failed the Dewalt proves reliable.

5-0 out of 5 stars Plain tired of driving nails?
DeWalt hit the nail on the head (no pun intended) with this great nail gun. Works flawlessly, feels great, well balanced and looks good. This one wins hands down over the rest of the players. Enough said! ... Read more

I purchased this unit after comparing several makers and models. It worked wonderfully...for one day.Within twenty-four hours the fan stopped working. The lights lit up and everything appeared to be appropriately configured, but it would not work.

1-0 out of 5 stars 2 Per package, however Bionaire BAP650 requires 3
To replace the filters in my model, BAP650, you need three filters. They are sold two/pack.Either design the product with filters in multiples of two or sell them three/pack.How illogical and annoying!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent tool and time saver
I use this polisher on my trucks and my boat and find it to be an excellent tool for compounding and waxing. Its use probably cuts in half the amount of time necessary to wax a vehicle - perhaps more. On vehicles I use it only to apply the polish removing the glaze by hand. However on the boat I use it for application and polishing. Several reviewers have noted that it is light weight so perhaps it is my age (60+) showing but I find it the polisher gets fairly heavy after a few hours of compounding a boat. I would also recommend wearing a decent pair of leather gloves when operating the polisher otherwise you can probably expect a large blister on the hand hold the side handle. For what its worth I use the orange hook and loop pads from Griot's Garage. I find the quality of the tool itself to be excellent and fully expect it to last for many, many years.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent tool for DIY detailers
This is the tool of choice for many professional and most DIY detailers.

As many reviewers have stated the hook and loop (velcro) pad makes using this tool MUCH easier. To do a proper job on you car, plane or boat you will need to use at least two different types of pads. Thus the ability to simply rip off a pad and stick on a the next one is a HUGE time saver.

As mentioned it is a bit louder than you would expect so you may want to consider hearing protection if you are going to be using it for long periods of time.

Pad selection will depend on the job you need to do.Choosing the right pads for the job can be determined by visiting www.properautocare.comthey will teach you how to use the polisher and the correct pads as well as the correct wax/polishing products for you needs.

Establishing and understanding your needs and then buying the correct pads and polish/wax is required to deliver the best results.

Your end result is completly dependent on how well you do the basics. The Porter Cable is just a tool that makes the job MUCH easier...and in a lot of cases does things that you could never accomplish by hand...however it's not a miracle worker on its own.

This is a solidly built tool for professionals and I recommend it highly.Don't waste your time with those cheapie versions...buy this and you will never regret it.

While there are a number of rotary tools on the market made by a host of different manufacturers, the Dremel Moto Tool is the one they all strive to copy. Dremel's MultiPro variable-speed model is great for a huge range of projects, from home improvement tasks to hobbies and crafting. It has a continuously adjustable speed range from 5,000 to 35,000 rpm, which allows the user to effectively work with materials as soft as balsa wood and as hard as ceramics. The kit comes with an assortment of accessories and a handy carrying case. 3-0 out of 5 stars Hate to burst the Dremel bubble..
Two problems..

Although I rarely use mine (maybe once every two months), sometime during the first year I started having to fight my charger so it would charge the tool.

Secondly, The variable switch stopped working. So now I have only one speed..High.

I plan on shipping it back to get it fixed, but since I rarely use it, it hasn't been a top priority..

When you pay for a expensive tool, you expect it to be dependable and not stop working right in a few months when you're not using it.

I guess I should have stuck with Lowes's house brand...

Editorial Review

With this 2-1/2-inch, 16-gauge finish nailer, Porter-Cable continues to make good on their reputation as one of the top pneumatic toolmakers. The gun's straight magazine is well thought out, made from aluminum, and top loading. This is a sturdy, compact nailer that shoots a conveniently wide range of 16-gauge nails, from 3/4 to 2-1/2 inches. The nailer has a good balance and a nice, thin grip made of porous rubber. (You don't have to have the hands of a giant to comfortably operate this gun.) The gun has a nicely designed depth-of-drive adjustment. There's also a muffled exhaust port, so it's quieter than a lot of other nailers--plus the exhaust port is adjustable, so you can direct the discharge where you want it. The gun's also lighter than we'd expected, always a good thing in a tool a lot of us use all day long. --Jon Groebner ... Read more

  • Adjustable exhaust port and depth-of-drive for maximum comfort and control
  • Drives 3/4-inch to 2-1/2-inch, 16 gauge finish nails without the need for a nail guide

  • Teflon cylinder for less friction and reduced O-ring wear for long lasting action
  • Quick-release nose piece for fast clearing of jams and less down time

3-0 out of 5 stars I Expected More From Porter Cable
Yet another Christmas present from my wife, and a very thoughtful one too, but I own Senco's and this PC just doesn't cut it.To me it seems rather clunky and old school.

I recently installed some 5/8" plywood shelves that I wanted to pin into the poplar supports.A project this gun should've handled with ease. Not only did I have a difficult time getting this gun into the space, which my Senco fit into, but it wouldn't even sink the nails!!I really couldn't believe it, so I got out my Senco and using the same 90 psi had no problems at all... it even countersunk them.

PC, like all tool companies, should stick with what they do best...in PC's case probably routers. I'll stick with Senco for nail guns. After reading my own review perhaps I should've given it two stars. Stick with the Senco.

Thanks and I hope you find this review helpful. And, Good Luck with your own dreams!

Black & Decker’s VersaPak tools are great for the homeowner, and to keep them running, you’ll want some spare batteries. Some advantages to these include their freedom from "memory," which keeps you from getting a full recharge and the fact that you’ll get at least 300 full recharges on each battery. They’ll power all the 3.6-volt VersaPak tools, including the ScumBuster and screwdrivers. Of course, once you buy a VersaPak tool, you don’t have a choice of batteries, but we’ve found these to be reliable and well able to power the 3.6-volt VersaPak line. The charger has a light that lets you know you’ve inserted the batteries for a charge, and three hours later, they’re ready to go. Our only suggestion: We’d like to see Black & Decker revamp the charger to let us know when the batteries are fully charged. --Kris Jensen-Van Heste ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Same problems with batteries and charger
B&D's claims for the batteries are just not true.I have had the same problems with very short battery life and intermittent charger described in other reviews.I have gone through several sets of gold batteries (don't even try the cheaper ones!).

And now, to make matters worse, you can't buy replacements locally anymore (they have been replaced by other tools with different batteries) and have to scour the internet trying to keep my tools working.

I will be replacing my tools very soon, I'm sure. The only reason I give 2 stars instead of one is that the tools do work pretty well when you can get a new battery in them.

great idea - lots of different tools all use same rechargeable batteries.BUT these batteries die in <1 year.I have a whole set of tools that use these, but now my choice is: spend $60/yr on batteries, or get a new set of tools that will last longer!Pretty easy decision at this point... considering I already have a great Craftsman drill and there are other tools that use the same batteries.
BE WARNED - if you buy these you will be buying them forever.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Flashlight Ever
I have owned this flashlight for over 20 years. It is the most dependable light ever.It was given to my dad from the police chief of our city.I now live in his house and it hangs on the wall next to the door always charged and ready. If there is ever a blackout, you know right where it is and you know it is ready. We all reach for it several times a day.I just bought a new one to put at my other door.It is dependable and sturdy and can be used as a weapon if needed.Best light I have ever owned. You will wonder how you ever got along without it.

5-0 out of 5 stars INCREDIBLE light!!!
I have been a home inspector for 19 years.About 14 years ago, I bought a mag rechargeable. In all of those years of crawling under hundreds of houses, banging that light against rocks, floor joists, and in one case, an agitated field RAT, this thing has NEVER failed me.
I am looking at buying a second one, and only my FOURTH battery after ALL of those years!!! One of the reasons for buying another one is that the switch finally failed, and I REFUSE to use a 'lesser' light while I am having this one repaired. The times that I have had to use my backup regular flashlight (a pretty decent rayovac roughneck), it has been like being 'blind' under a house! The pure BRIGHTNESS is amazing! The spot focus on this light is very precise, though I have found that some bulbs focus better than others.
These things are also TOUGH...I have dropped mine a couple of DOZEN times onto concrete and asphalt (yep!!! I am clumsy!)And that WILL sometimes kill a bulb..But the flashlight is almost indestructible! If you could just SEE how battered and scarred this thing IS, you wouldn't believe it still works!
You will NOT be disappointed in this flashlight! It is the BEST investment that I have made in equipment EVER!!!
ENJOY!

5-0 out of 5 stars Safety for Women
This will be the second one I've owned. The first one I had for 10 years and left on a bus, by accident. It is the best deterrent one could hope for. When your carrying it like a cop with your hand at the lamp ready to flash it in someones face to stun them with the light, pop them on the forehead to get their attention, or knock them to the ground using it like a baseball bat.Men look at you very differently, a bit scared and not cat calling and blowing you kisses. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars If it seems too good to be true, it probably is.
Purchased this product (after reading the positive online reviews here) to remove rust from the table of my Unisaw that had been in unconditioned storage for several years.
Let's just say that the results were less than what the manufacturer claims & other reviewer's experiences; it works, but not very well. I used 3 applications of this stuff, & was able to remove about 50% of the surface rust.
Now, I'm not suggesting it doesn't work, only that it wasn't a magic fix. After spending a half hour scrubbing the table, & using about half a bottle of this stuff, I figure I could have gotten just as good or better results using another method, like sanding. I'll probably resort to that at this point, & save what's left in the bottle to use as a conditioner once I get the rust removed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Tested and passed
I'm not sure what the ulterior motives are for the negative reviews of this product, but it worked so well for me that I decided to submit my first-ever review online.

I had an 8" jointer that sat under a tarp (after being coated heavily with spray lubricant) under a carport for two years in humid Houston, Texas. Yes, it rusted. I recently moved to a place out west with a large basement and I've set up a nice woodshop. I read a review of this product, purchased it, and decided to compare it with another product advertised for the same purpose ("Rust Free" from the makers of Boeshield). I used both products on either end of the jointer. The Boeshield stuff worked miserably--and smelled overpoweringly terrible. The Topsaver--with a lot of elbow grease--took off the rust and shined the table almost as good as new. I only wish I'd taken pictures of the comparison. . .

My only negative comment is that the multi-product package--I thinks its called "Toolsaver"--has bottles that are too small. That's why I'm now buying the larger bottle(s)of Topsaver.

This is one of the very few products I've ever bought that lived up to the advertising claims.

5-0 out of 5 stars Most Outstanding Rust Remover
This product does everything it says it will!I live near the gulf coast & moisture is a big problem.I had severe rust in one area of my table saw & light rust in other areas & on my jointer.I followed the directions, sprayed the table tops, rubbed with the scotch brite pads, wiped down with paper towels & the rust was amazingly gone.I've tried some other acclaimed products & they couldn't get close to Topsaver. The table tops look like new & are now ready to be taken care of to prevent the rust from happening again.Empire says to use Table Top which protects the surfaces better than topsaver even though it does provide some surface protection. The Table Top will last longer & not require as frequent re-treatment as Topsaver.I'm trying it out now so that I don't have to treat the surfaces as often as Topsaver would require.Topsaver is a first class product!! ... A reliable generator is essential gear for contractors, but it's also important for home owners, campers, RV enthusiasts and others who may face planned or unplanned power needs. The Generac 9777 4,000 watt extended-life generator is just such a tool. The generator is ideally suited for either occasional or everyday use. A rugged, 7.8-horsepower overhead valve industrial engine provides 4,000 watts of reliable electricity and up to 13.5 hours of use on a single four-gallon tank of fuel. The unit is versatile and easy to use, with two 20 amp 120V power outlets, one full-power 30 amp 120V twist lock outlet, and one full-power 20 amp 120/240V twist lock outlet. It also comes with charger cables for recharging 12V batteries. The engine runs quietly and is designed with several added smart features, including an oversized dual element air filter, an automotive-style oil filter, and full-pressure lubrication. It also features a pressurized low oil shutdown system, automatic idle control, and a power surge alternator that protects against power fluctuations when starting and operating several motor-driven items at the same time. --Carl Thress ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Generator (update)
During the hurricane Charley power outage my neighbor was kind enough to run an extension cord from his generator over to my house and saved all my food. The day we got power back I ordered the 9777 from Amazon with super saver shipping and $25 off promotion.Four days after I received it Hurricane Frances slammed the Florida East coast HARD.This little generator saved our bacon for three days while we were without power. The best thing I can say about it, and the reason I bought this item, is the fantastic fuel economy.I was getting between 3 and 5 hours per gallon while powering a freezer, refrigerator, fans, lights, television, coffee pot and using the built in 12 volt charging function. This compares to my neighbor with his gallon per hour usage. It started up every time with one or two pulls, has pressurized lubrication, an idle function switch and a built in 12 volt charger.I do agree with others that the little foot on the front of the unit could be beefier but still give it 5 stars because of the miserly fuel consumption.Do not underestimate this fact when looking for generators since gas was not available down here in Florida for several days after the hurricane passed.

After this was written Hurricane Jeanne hit us several weeks later.Again, this little generator ran flawlessly for several days powering all of the above plus the window air conditioner (Panasonic, see separate review) that I had purchased for just such an occasion.Fuel consumption was the same and all my neighbors with thier 5500 Watt overkill units were sure jealous of that.I still heartily recommend this generator.

3-0 out of 5 stars faulty oil pressure switch
WE bought this generator as a emergency power unit about 3 yrs ago.we have run it for a total of maybe 40 hours.the last time we used it,itran for 1hr. then shut down. would start right back then do it again. unit is full of oil.unpluged oil pressure switch now it will run. this unit is not very quiet but still quieter than some coleman generators.factory should include extra switch and symptoms of this problem in manual.

5-0 out of 5 stars Commercial Grade
I recently purchased my Generac 4000 EXL for my RV. ( Also for my home, in the event of rolling power black-outs.The product is very sound in design with big generator features at a economical price.I especially like the pressurized oil system for the engine as it will extend the life of the engine. The electric start is a "must have" for a portable generator. (even more so for a RV)The automatic idle control is great and helps with noise control. (The unit tends to be a little noisy when under a heavy load.) The generator is compact and can easily be stored in the RV.
I have found the generator to be able to handle all my power needs. Even when the AC unit is turned on the Generac 4000 handles the power needs without problems.
One note:
I did purshase a three year service contract on the unit just to take care of any problems. So far I have had no problems with the unit.
I highly recommend this generator... ... Read more

Editorial Review

Garmin's eTrex Venture GPS receiver offers a host of track- and path-related programs and is surprisingly easy to use. Its size and design make it comfortable to use one-handed, and its automatic tracking feature and ability to download maps from optional CD-ROMs make it an excellent navigation tool.

Roughly the size and shape of a cell phone, the Venture has six buttons that are easily accessible by thumb and forefinger. The Power, Page, Zoom In, Zoom Out, and Find buttons are along the side, with the big-daddy navigation button (a directional click-button akin to a thumb-operated joystick) on the front above the screen. The side buttons are stiff enough that it's nearly impossible to accidentally push one. However, we found the navigation button to be a bit too stiff, which caused us several errors in entering waypoints.

Text was very easy to read--highlights are discernible and menu bars and clickable objects are well-defined. The unit also has an excellent backlight, which illuminates the whole screen with a white light, giving excellent contrast and viewing capability at night.

The Venture's interface is split into five different pages, each providing different functions. The main menu page gives you access to your saved routes and tracks, as well as setup for using WAAS (Wide Area Augmentation Service) reception, unit measurement, time, and display. These are all quickly rotated through with the click of the Page button on the right-hand side of the unit.

The map page displays the basemap included with the Venture, and for outdoor excursions it provides all the basics you'll need. It automatically tracks your movements and you can save individual tracks for later viewing. The map is zoomable from 500 miles to 20 feet depending on your preferences. You can place waypoints and places of interest on the map and name and change the icons of each to create your own personalized maps. If you decide you want to go somewhere, press the Find button and you'll get quick access to waypoints, your favorites list, and nearby cities.

The Venture features 1 MB of memory for downloading points-of-interest data--including lodging, business services, banks, and more--from optional CD-ROMs via the included PC cable. Unfortunately, for more detailed mapping you'll need to look to the Garmin eTrex Legend or Vista, both of which have larger memory capacities and the ability to download detailed maps.

Reception was, of course, best outside on a clear day, but the Venture retained most of its functionality under limited cover like small buildings or thick trees.

All in all, the Garmin eTrex Venture is a nifty little GPS tool and is ready to roll for your outdoor adventure. However, if you're looking to use more detailed map data with your GPS, the Garmin eTrex Vista or Legend would be a better choice. --Matt Deffer

Pros:

  • Intuitive interface
  • Clear, easy-to-read display
  • Create waypoints at key locations for easy navigation
  • Included PC cable for downloading firmware upgrades and maps
Cons:
  • 1 MB memory only accepts points-of-interest data

4-0 out of 5 stars Great GPS receiver for basic hiking and backpacking.
I returned a Cobra GPS 100 and upgraded to the eTrex Venture for the extra money. What a difference only a few dollars more can make! this is my first GPS unit ever, and I had no problems picking everything up within a day.

For starters, it only took about two minutes to locate a satellite for the first time (supposed to take up to five) and averages about 30 seconds to locate one in general. The screen resolution is easy to read and the options for customizing the map make it even easier if you have trouble reading small text. The waypoint markers are easy to define and edit. The compass seems to be very quick in picking up your movements. Almost everything is customizable giving you endless options for your specific use for the GPS unit. The unit is comfortable in the hand, although some of the buttons are a little stiff at first.

My satellite reception is excellent. I took it hiking in 40°F rain and hail (obviously very overcast) and only lost reception once while walking under heavy tree cover. On the way home I placed it on the dashboard and it tracked me 33 miles home without losing reception once. This was in 500 ft visibility fog on a one lane curvy mountain road. This unit definitely gets the job done.

My only gripes are there's no beep or sound when it loses reception and you have to press enter to acknowledge you have lost reception, thus it begins tracking you again. So if you hike by turning the unit on and placing it in your backpack, or even on your belt, you could have lost reception and not known it, and because you haven't acknowledged the unit, it's not tracking you anymore (as far as I can tell).

Other than that, this unit works perfect for getting you in and out of areas where there's no trails and finding that perfect spot to spend the night or fish and hunt.

2-0 out of 5 stars Just OK, or maybe a bit less than that.
This was a mild disappointment. It is the second Garmin product that fails me, I also owned a Pilot II, whose firmware at some point lost its marbles, and now it displays only some pages and refuses to get a GPS fix.

The Venture had, almost from the beginning, a problem with the display, which flickered and became alternatively all black or white, or lost some horizontal lines, creating a nice "blinds" effect.

The problem normally went away by moderate slapping. But it is not a nice start.

Second point: the battery contacts are sub-quality, you just need to shake the unit a little and the electrodes lose contact with the battery, causing the unit to switch off.

Third: when the memory is fairly full, the operating system goes in overload mode, sometimes it does not manage to acquire the user input, and you find yourself trying to use the buttons without actually managing to do nothing. Erase the memory and the problem disappears.

Four: a few leaves overhead and you lose the fix, the sensitivity and selectivity is not great.

Maybe I had a bad firmware, who knows, but I don't want to change my firmware every month, I expect the original firmware to be OK for a while.

I just bought a Magellan, I'm curious to see if it's better or worse.

4-0 out of 5 stars Used for both kayaking and geocaching
I purchased the Garmin Venture a year ago.I have used it on several 20 mile kayaking trips down a river and this past April used it for a 135 mile river trip.It was extremely accurate and we not only knew where we were, but how far it was to the next landing or landmark.

It did take some time to learn how to operate the unit. The instructions were not as clear as I would have liked but trial and error is a great teacher.I had a friend who got me interested in geocaching and that really helped me learn how to use all of the Venture's features. It is easy to upgrade from the Garmin website and to also download maps from the Mapsource CD-ROM's.It is kind of like learning to use a computer.Don't be afraid to try something. You won't hurt it.

I usually average 18+ hours on a pair of batteries.I also purchased a power cord so that I could use it in my vehicle.I just plug it in and wedge the GPS between the windshield and dashboard and follow the arrow to the next geocache.

I have been impressed with the toughness of this unit.I have dunked it in the river, dropped it, and generally given it a rough time.I would recommend this to someone who is interested in a GPS but does not want to invest a lot of money. ... Read more

Looking right out of the Jetsons' household, Fein's Turbo II vacuum is one the most effective on the market. With features like automatic start and dust-sealed switches, it's specifically designed to work with shaping, routing, or sanding tools, which create a lot of dust. It's also as quiet as any shop vacuum we've heard, making it easier to use in close proximity to a project, or in an enclosed space, and its internal fabric boot helps keep dust to a minimum. The Turbo II has a 7.3-gallon solid capacity, a 6.8-gallon liquid capacity, and a 1,300-watt, 9-1/2 amp, two-stage motor. Its size and sturdy rollers make it very portable and easy to dump after being filled. Unlike some larger models, you'll still be able to lift and empty this vacuum by yourself. The body is solid plastic and will hold up well to wear. The shape of the vacuum makes it easy to move around a job site--there aren't any big handles or attachments sticking out (other then the hose) to get snagged when wheeling the vacuum around. Fein's Turbo II is--hands down--a very high-quality, very low-noise vacuum, well worth the investment for carpenters, woodworkers, and craftspeople. --Jonathon Tudor ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good Vacuum, Bad Waranty
I'm writing this messege with the intent of alerting users to some issues I just experienced with the Fein Model 9-55-13 vacuum.I"m not recommending against buying one, but I do think they should revisit their service policy.

I had my unit for about a year and a half.During that time I was genrealy very pleased with the unit in many respects. It had fantastic dust collection, a resonable foot print, and of course made a lot less noise than anything else.

A few days back it broke.I called Fein and was told that I had to send it into either Pitsburg or Hartford.I told them I was a contractor and needed an immediate replacement. The rep asked me if I wanted to buy a new one!

I sent an email.Below is the response (note he got my name wrong):

Craig Morrison [cmorriso@feinus.com]
Hi Vince,

I am not really sure how to respond to thie compliant, or even if we should. While I think our repair centers probably shouldn't throw repair estimates at our customers, and wait till they actually see the tool, I also don't believe that Sears, or any other manufacture would consider a "no-charge" replacement on a power tool that has been used for a year and half.

Craig

3-0 out of 5 stars Not Very Powerful and a Pain to Clean
I have had this vac for about three years now.I use it a lot when sanding and it does a nice job collecting dust so I don't have to wear a dust mask and I don't get covered with dust whensanding. My sanding discs last a lot longer when using the vac.
Cleaning the filter is a pain because I have to go outside with a nozzle and hose connected to my compressor.I blow the dust off the filter and it makes a huge cloud of dust outside and I have to hose down the residue on the ground.
The vacuum loses power as the filter becomes clogged. At first it was very quiet but after a while it became louder and louder and now is about as loud as any other shop vac.
The sucking power is not impressive. It has no more sucking power than my household vacuum. What is nice is that when you turn it on it doesn't blow a cloud of dust like other shop vacs. The small diameter hose clogs easy with small scraps. The acessories are extra and not cheap.

3-0 out of 5 stars FEIN Turbo almost a great product
I bought it for it's relatively low noise level - which it delivers.

It's hard to believe that a premium priced product like this would have some glaring shortcomings such as:

ON-OFF switch is concealed from view and the symmetrical design of the top gives no clue where it is every time you look to turn it on or off. I made a bandaid fix by placing a piece of tape on the top above the switch location - (-at this price?)

The casters must be smallest of any on the market and they are not guarded. Any obstruction on the floor such as an air hose or extension cord will stop them.

There is no built in provision for storing the powercord.

There is completely inadequate provision for storage of the vacuum hose. If at least one or two more wire formed brackets were included it would help a lot.

There is NO provision at all for storing any nozzles or hose extension.

These shortcomings will annoy every time the product is used - NOT GOOD.

This is a case of function being sacrificed at the altar of Industrial Design, yet so unnecessary and so easily avoidable.

3-0 out of 5 stars quality and flexibility are not top shelf
I didn't open the package immediately upon receipt, so when I finally did and discovered the switch plate for the magnet shattered, it was a little too late to return it.Since I could operate the magnet without the blue plastic plate, I kept it.

This unit is not easily configured to use.I have a sliding table on my table saw and thought the magnetic base would make this convenient to use to check several metrics.Unfortunately, this unit doesn't easily configure to check the table travel. It's difficult to describe but trust me, getting the dial indicator at the right height to measure the blade is really an ordeal. The two rods have different diameters so, the dial only attaches to rod A which in turn must be attached to rod B.Rotating the dial on the rod it attaches to is also problematic making it difficult to position the dial face to be able to read it, assuming you can contort the mechanism to get it where you need it in the first place.

If you need to measure from the miter slots (to test fence or blade parallelism), you'll need to buy an accessory elsewhere.

The vernier caliper is very nice but only displays in decimal.I prefer my plastic caliper that also displays in 64's for more practical use in wood working.

For the price the caliper alone is almost worth the purchase, but take a closer look at the dial indicator etc. to make sure you can use it as intended.

5-0 out of 5 stars More than you would expect - excellent quality
When you spend thirty dollars for something like this, you cross your fingers and hope it will be at least adequate. The quality of these measurement tools, both of them, is well beyond what I expected. I almost hesitated to write this for fear some marketing weasel would make his case for bumping the price or substituting lesser quality items.

This is my first purchase from Grizzly, to say I am impressed and that I will purchase more from this company as a result of this purchase is an understatement. 5 stars!! I would expect to pay much more for this level of quality. Thank you Grizzly. You too Amazon.

5-0 out of 5 stars They are precise and they are affordable...
Before reviewing this item I should explain how I came to use it.I was reading a recent special issue of Popular Woodworking Magazine entitled "The Ultimate Guide to Tablesaws 2004".In this magazine I found the article "19 Step Tune-up" by Paul Anthony. This article explained a lot to me and really emphasized the importance of keeping your tablesaw (and other tools) properly adjusted. He explained the many components of a tool that can be checked/calibrated using a dial indicator.I assumed throughout the article that he was probably using some $300 model that would forever be out of my reach.Imagine my surprise when he revealed that he was using the Grizzly dial indicator with magnetic base attachment, and that these items are precise and affordable on every budget!

Now for my review:I ordered this kit because it contained a decent looking dial caliper in addition to the dial indicator and magnetic base I was really after.Grizzly shipped in their usual speedy fashion and I have to say I am well pleased with this purchase.Once you hold these tools in your hands you understand that they are good quality without being frilly. Their construction seems perfectly adequate, and my tests showed them to be quite precise as well.Within minutes I was able to set up my dial indicator and determine that the aging blade on my tablesaw was no longer flat and needed to be replaced. The dial calipers are equally easy to use and more accurate than my old calipers that were sans dial.

All in all, this is a smart buy that will allow you to fine tune your tools and check precise calibrations without hurting your pocketbook one bit. ... Read more

If you’re reading this, you’re probably already a Dremel owner, and we don’t have to tell you how incredibly versatile this little tool is. Adding the drill press attachment will expand your Dremel capabilities, turning it into a drill press as well as a great stationary sanding tool. We wouldn’t use this in place of a regular drill press, mind you, but it has its own range of uses that a benchtop or floor model isn’t suited for. Precise micro holes are a cinch with the Dremel in this stand; it’s smooth-riding and sturdy, and you Dremel users know how well it drives the smallest bits, the kind a regular drill press would swallow up. We like that you can mount the Dremel horizontally as well, so your Dremel becomes a mini stationary sander—just bring your workpiece to it. We think there are parts, like the base, that could be beefier, but for the price, we like it.--Kris Jensen-Van Heste ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars useful but not for fine work
I bought this as a cheap alternative to a drill press (I already have a Dremel). It is useful for most rough work, but cannot be used for fine work since the column is an aluminium tube and the tool holder is plastic - there is too much yield in the structure.By fine I mean, if you need to drill a hole within less than 1/32 inch of a marked location.
The press also has a little (mysterious) sideways play that I could not get rid of by any amount of tightening.

1-0 out of 5 stars Low End JUNK
I purchased one of these to make my dremel into a drill press for wood - mostly softwood and it has been a terrible experience. The collars that attach the tool do not allow for perfect square alignment and the dremel many times cant seat a bit so there is no wobble. I was disappointed with this tool. I found that MicroMark makes a small hobby drill press (as well as other great tools) that is sturdy, reliable and excellent. It maycost more then the dremel but you do get what you pay for.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good for PCB drilling
I bought this attachment for drilling 0.7mm holes on printed circuit boards. It had a little side-play, but rotating the height guide eliminated the problem. I use it with a Black & Decker RTX (yes, it works if you replace the top holding screw with a longer one and force the holding ring a little bit) and the Dremel multi-chuck for holding such small drill bits, and it works great.

I couldn't imagine using a standard 10" drill press with a 1/2" chuck along with 0.7mm (less than 1/32") drill bits, and the drill press adapters for conventional hand drills had WAY too much play. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars solid machine at a good price
After about 15 years of fighting with the junk and long term storage stuff in the garage, I exersized my right as the king of my castle, the lord and master, the big cheese, the head honco, the alfa male of my home ... (with my wifes permission of course)...to turn the garage into the shop I had always wanted, needed, and had been reading about for years.
Like most quality minded woodworkerswho must keep within the limits of a blue light special budget, I did a lot of shopping around before deciding on the grizzly G1029Z.Not having much experience with dust collectors other than various shop vacs, I studied the reviews and spec's for a number of machines. The 1550 CFM of the Grizzly in combination with the relatively low price made it a no contest.Altho this machine does the job of dust collection in my small one car garage shop quite well, I was expecting more power. The others I looked at in this price range claimed much lower CFM than the grizzly.I don't think anything less than the power of this dust collector would have been acceptable even for my small shop. Its possible the .3 micron top bag restricts the air flow a bit too much. However, that was a deciding factor in that most other systems claimed a filtering capability of 30 micron.
All in all I'm very happy with my dust collector. It runs fairly quiet and does the job. However, if you have a larger shop, especially if you run more than one machine at a time, you may want to step up to a bit more power. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Early Adopters Pick: May 2003. The first fully robotic lawnmower that can learn parts of your yard.

The Robomower is convenient, easy, robotic, and clean--and it transforms the world of yard work! Set up (once), turn on, and the Robomower cuts the grass on almost any surface--all by itself. Getting the system set up in your yard can take most of an afternoon, but the well-written manual makes the job easier. The biggest part of the set-up task is stringing the perimeter wire around your yard, marking the boundaries the Robomower will stay within. Once you're set, and the mower is on, the machine simply senses the perimeter wire and uses three mulching blades to cut down everything inside the wire. Thanks to the onboard computer, the Robomower can even learn parts of your yard as it mows, making it quicker next time. The mower is quiet, automatic, and the mulching blades mean that when it's done you don't need to bag or rake.

The Robomower is outfitted with safety features. It won't run at all if it's flipped over with the blades exposed. Likewise, it turns tail and backs off if its soft 360-degree bumpers encounter any foreign object (like a pet or toy or favorite rose bush). A theft deterrent system keeps the unit safe. The Robomower is very quiet compared to other lawn mowers, although because it takes longer to get the job done than a human with a walk-behind mower, what noise there is lasts longer. The mower works best on level yards smaller than 3,200 square feet, with the grass reasonably tame to begin with. It does not work well on hilly or overgrown yards. While it takes a full day to recharge the battery, a full charge is enough to mow most lawns. (The mower is definitely no
