Great Drill - Awesome Price
The batteries for this thing are ~$85 each.When you consider that, and the fact that this is an awesome drill, it adds up to an excellent deal.It comes with a smart charger so you don't fry your batteries and the thing has power that goes on and on and on.I can't wait until they get more of these in because I'm getting another one.

THE BEST DRILL EVER MADE!
I bought this drill for my husband and it is great. He has worn out every other drill that he has used such as snap on, 12v porter cable, and several other drills but this one stands up to the test. I am hoping this will be the last one i will ever buy and so far i have nothing but praise for it. The batteries last forever and its great that it comes with two so there is no waiting. This drill is also a great price. I shopped around and this is by far the best deal. I just cant say enough about this drill. I hope this was helpful in making your purchase.

Best Drill Ever!
I am a professional developer/renovator.Working in old houses often means tough studs and hardwood floors and timbers that need some agressive power and other battery powered drills i have used failed the test, and this one has the strength and stammina to mix thin set mortor for the ceramic tile jobs we often do. Good as new
If not for the "factory reconditioned" labeling, I could not distinguish this from a new item. (Maybe I was lucky to get clean one, seeing the other reviews.) It works just fine.
Here are some observations to help you make your purchase decision:
-- I think that the 14.4v size is the best compromise between power and weight. My Black&Decker died part-way through the construction of my new deck, so I borrowed an 18v DeWalt from a neighbor and a 12v Makita from another neighbor while I was shopping for a new one. I found that the 18v was too heavy, but the 12v didn't have enough oomph and needed more frequent recharges. I got to finish the deck project with my reconditioned 14.4v and found to be JUST RIGHT.
-- One thing I liked about the DeWalt I borrowed that my Makita does NOT have is the all-metal ratcheted chuck available on the DeWalt XRP series. This allows you to tighten and loosen the chuck with one hand. But for average home-owner usage, the Makita chuck is just fine.

-- When shopping both online and at local discount home improvement stores, I found that the reconditioned verison is roughly a third less than new, making it a very good value, especially if you live somewhere that this can be shipped without sales tax. The free shipping that Amazon.com offered at the time I bought it was another advantage.

Disappointed
I hope the drill operates better than it looks.The drill looks well used.Not what I expected.

After 3 uses the torque setting no longer works.I can't even drive a sheetrock screw in with this drill with out the clutch slipping.What a waste of money and time.I'm buying Dewalt and Porter Cable from now on...and I won't be buying them online.

Makita NIMH Battery does not last 30% longer
I purchased this Makita drill with the NIMH battery because I work in the construction trade and I wanted a battery that I did not have to recharge all the time. The drill works well for me but one of the NIMH batteries do not seem to last 30% longer as Makita claims. When I charge the battery on friday and try to use it on Monday, the battery has drained to where I have to recharge it again, in fact my 9.6 volt Makita lasts longer than the 14.4 volt. I have sent it in to Makita under the one year warranty but they sent it back saying the batteries are "ok". I am not happy with this Makita kit, the money I saved buying a remanufactured drill was not worth it, now I have to buy a new battery and will be paying more money than if I would have bought the kit brand new at Home Depot. ... Stone house drill!
As the owner of a stone house, I need to have a drill like this just to hang stuff on my walls. And it does the job. From satellite dishes to picture frames (outside and in) it can drill through the toughest rock -- and better than the competitors tools. The hammer function works great and the batteries have a good long use time when fully charged. I've also used it for drywall and cabinet installations. And I use it most heavily for maintainance on stalls, doors, and other hardware on my barn and feneces.

Excellent tool
I have owned and used several other brands of cordless tools. This by far the most powerful and dependable. With one of the cordless tools I had used it so much that I had to replace the gear cartridge in just a few minutes. I was quite surprised at how low the cost was. When I am on a job and ask to use another tool it is obvious that the person didn't spend the money to get a good tool just by the sound of the tool.

This cordless drill is quiet and powerful. I also like the fact that I can turn the battery around to adjust the balance of the tool.

A few moths ago I asked a local supplier why he didn't handle the same drill. He told me that they cost more than the others. I mentioned that they are a better tool. He agreed and told me that people didn't want to spend that much money.

If you want a drill that will go every day and have a lot of power with good control then get this Milwaukee.

A great battery powered drill motor!

High quality tools
I already owned two portable, battery powered drills when I purchased this set because I wanted the cordless sawzall. Not only am I pleased with the cordless sawzall, but the cordless drill is the best one I own. It is much higher quality than the two Porter-Cable drills I own. I use the drill/hammer function frequently as I have a stone house and require a serious drill to hang anything on any of the exterior facing walls of my house. Piece of Junk!!
I could not believe the condition of the drill when I finally recieved it after several delays.It looked like it was dragged to my house by the delivery truck.My old drill was in better condition.After 3 uses the variable torque on my "recondition to like new drill" let go...I can't even drive a sheetrock screw into a 2 x 4.This is my second 14.4 makita drill and my last.I will never buy another makita or buy a tool online again.I've learned my lesson, it's worth the few dollars more to buy locally and know I'm getting what I want. At least I'll be able to use the batteries in my old drill.I should have bought a DEWALT or PORTER CABLE!!

Factory-Reconditioned Makita
I was dissappointed that the keyless chuck was in very poor condition. Although the drill works flawlessly, it looked as though the chuck had been friction burned - quite ugly looking. I figure I got what I paid for - great light and drill but kinda wished I'd paid the extra bucs for a pristine new drill. The flashlight and batteries appeared new.

I bought this from Amazon.com in Dec. 2001 as my old Dewalt gave up the ghost after only three years. It never felt strong enough from the beginning, so I went with the Makita 14.4. Again, with Makita, what a difference. Mine was a new drill with an "R", probably returned for no reason. After a battery charge I Ran 3" deck screws in 30-#1 CCA 2x6x20 decking. After a year and 3 months It will still countersink, or snap the heads of 3 1/2" screws without pre-drilling. Plenty of torqueI haven't used the light till about 3 months ago, and the switch doesn't work. I don't care I did not buy it for the light. I figure it was a promotional thing. There is no comparison to nicad batteries. This is a serious tool. I have not been dissapointed in anything Makita has made in the last 7 yrs. ... Read more

Power screwdriver
This IS one of the BEST drivers I've owned. I have owned others, but this one has been the best! It has the power to drill into walls and some softwoods (2X4's) plus drive Tech screws without predrilling a hole. The only thing I would have done different is buy a second battery.

SCREWS BUT WON'T DRILL
This tool seems to operate fine but don't try to use the drills that come with it because the Jacobs Chuck needed to hold the drill bits is not included in the reconditioned model according to a Milwaukee spokesman, even though the chuck is shown in the pictures as included in the kit.

One could go buy a Jacobs Chuckor better yet, buy a set of drill bits with hex bases that will fit in the tool.This will set you back atleast $10.

Flexible and tough power screwdriver
I've owned one of these for a couple of years now.I have found that the ergonomics of the driver are excellent.

The power is more than adequate - the high speed being just perfect and the low speed providing enough torque to undo all but the most stubborn of screws and bolts.

The clutch is extremely handy because it prevents overtightening and breaking off screw heads.

About my only complaint would be that battery management isn't what I'd like.Not quite enough battery life on a charge - and batteries seem to wear out (as in become unuseable and won't take a charge) relatively quickly. However that is just my personal view - Perhaps my expectations are unreasonable.Conside that my experience is that the B&D Versapak battery system isn't as long lasting as this.

I do not recomend this as an all-day tool for someone who works on an assembly line, for example.But certainly it is a more than excellent device.Beautifully designed and built with real metal gears inside.

Why would the average Joe ever buy a new one?
I received this drill in like new condition. Except for the R on the top I would not be able to tell it was reconditioned.I used it to build a deck and screwed everything that could be screwed and could not run down a battery before the other one was recharged and ready to go. I would recomend it to anyone in the market for a good tool at a good price.

About reconditioned tools
I have just purchased this Dewalt dw953k drill from mazon.com.
I have not yet received it but would like to mention my experience with dewalt Recon tools. These tools are new from the factory and have not been in use in the field. Dewalt and other manufacturers test and inspect all there tools at the end of the manufacturing process. If by chance they find any abnormality in the operation or generaly missing parts they are rejected and sent back into assembly for correction of the fault.
At this point they mark them with the R and repackage them for sale. Very rarely are these tools ever known to have been used by anyone other than factory quality control personel.
I have two other Dewalt recon tools a DW974 12volt cordless drill 7 years old and a DW628 3-1/2 HP router 6years old. Both are still in great operating condition and used everyday.

Good deal on great drill
I use this drill extensively at work, and it's great.It has been dropped, rained on, buried in dust, used at full power through 3 batteries non-stop, and generally abused on a daily basis.It just keeps going with no problems.The drill I got from Amazon was in blemish-free, like-new condition with the exception of the 'R' branded on the top to denote a reconditioned tool.The keyless chuck seems to have been updated from the one I've used, since it 'clicks' when tightening, much like a torque wrench.You can find the same thing as this for 90 bucks more at Home Depot (and that's without the extra battery), so this is a good deal. ... It's a good deal, but the specs are a bit exagerrated
It's a good deal, but the mfr claim is a little overstated: "The DW990 is the industry's most powerful 14.4-volt drill, delivering 334 in./lbs. of torque". Maybe true at one time, but not now.See the comparable Porter Cable 14.4-volt Model #9878, it's 360 in-lb, and for a few more bucks the Milwaukee #0516-22, at 390.

Minature right angle drill driver
I'm a contractor have installed lots of kitchens.I have had this tool for almost ten years and am buying a second. One will be used for drilling, the other as a driver.It is the perfect tool for installing cabinets and will allow you drill and screw together cabinets as narrow as nine inches. It is nice that is light and allows you to get in into akward positions without too much pain. Great drill, but the saw is for lefties.
After seeing the glowing review of the battery charge longevity in Fine Homebuilding I decided to stray from the conventional tool manufacturers and buy a panasonic.I was blown away buy the power packed into this compact drill.It seemed like a week before I had to recharge the battery, so I was sold.I ordered the wood combo-kit (in spite of the fact that it only came with the 3.0 amp batteries-not the monsterous 3.5 amp ones provided with the drill alone) and fortunately had read the previous review and bought the blade as well.Perfect out of the box when it arrived I jumped right in and grabbed the saw, eager to start cutting the promised 210 crosscut 2x4s.First thing I realized was that the drill is set up for a left handed user (look closely at the picture and then think of your old skillsaw...).I can't fault the drill and the saw is a great help; you don't realize how often you'd use it until you get one-it's so light you don't even think twice of making the heretofore extremely dangerous overhead cuts.All in all Panasonic has made a fabulous drill (aside from the high pitched whine of the chuck gear-and that really is the only fault of the drill, not bad) but I wish they made a right handed version of the saw.

Great Tools but where is the saw blade?
The saw is pictired with a blade in it... But guess what? It is not included with this set, beware and order one as well, otherwise that project will have to wait.

Milwaukee 18 Volt 1/2" Hammer/Drill/Driver
What a great tool!It is a little heavy, but it is also rugged and reliable.I bought it to install a mortarless brick system on the exterior walls of our new church.It holds up to a morning of hammer drilling holes in bricks and driving screws through 3/4" furring and 5/8" gypsum sheathing into heavy gauge metal studs.

When you want to relax and build a nice 16 foot floating dock or that deck your wife has been asking for since you can't remember when, the Milwaukee 18 volt Hammer Drill makes light work of drilling deck screws into wolmanized lumber.

I have seen other comments that the batteries are hard to remove, but for the life of me I can't see what is so hard about changing this tools battery.It also has a nice feature of being able to plug the battery in from the front or rear which helps get into some tight places with this tool.

Great tool
I bought this tool when I built my deck. It is very robust and powerful. The motor runs smoothly and battery lasts forever. It came with the wrong blade (for left hander) but the DeWalt customer service was very helpful. If you want a reliable saw this one is the way to go.

If your looking for cordless saw,don't look far!
Since I already have DeWalt 18V combo(drill and reciprocating saw). I'm looking more at this 24V cordless circular saw. For the price of a reconditioned, I got a more power and good deal. After all,its dewalt factory conditioned so I get all the warranty as a brand new unit.

The first time I saw these new DeWalt 24V cordless tools during a granding of a Home Depot hardware in our area. They have demonstrated how this piece of tough tools can do the work done. I was really impressed with this Heavy duty 6-1/2" circular saw, with 4,000 rpm, ergonomics handles,andlight weight.

I'm working on a backyard project was cutting 2x6 preassure treated lumber for a playground borders and landscaping borders. It does really made may job easier and fun. Don't buy this one! Buy a new one instead
I would say this is a great deal and would feel comfortable with it being reconditioned if it came with two batteries like a new one.What do they do with the other battery when it comes back, throw it away? Another battery will cost you around $90 and you need two.Anyway, I've owned one of these for 4 years and it is still going strong. This is an excellent product.

The Best Cordless You'll ever buy
I've had 4 different cordless drills.My wife bought me this one 3 years ago and I virtually used it steady for two years while building a new house for my son.It is a great drill with plenty of power and with the extra battery you don't need to worry about running out of soup.

I've had this drill for over 2 yrs and just love it. I've tried the millwaukee and dewalt, give me the PC everytime.

Worth the money
In my job, sheetmetal mechanic portability and durability are two of the most important factors dealing with hand tools.The 3/8 and 1/2 inch porter cable drill meets those demands.With the dual gear switch you can adjust the speed and with the torque adjustment you can ensure to eb on the safe side when using the drill motor as a driver for screws or bolts 5/16 up to 1/2" I would recomend the 1/2 drive for larger bolts. Whether I'm on the ladder or a scissor jack I have enough other tools in my pouch so dragging cords chuck keys etc makes my job more hassle. The portability of this item is great,as for the flashlight now talking about brightness it will definately give you some serious light as well with its rotary headmaking it hands free it will stay on most horizontal surfaces or if needed upsidedown it may be secured with a small rope thereby allowing to have the light over your shoulder and rotate the head as required. Battery charges in a resonable time allowing for continuous use have one on the charger and oprating with one. The draw back I've found is the keyless chuck ensure chuck is tight or it will cause the dill bit or driver to stop while penetrating the material being drilled a regular key chuck would ensure proper tightness without jaw damage and a satisfied user Bothe portability and durability are highly accented byt eh sturdy case housing the dilllight charger and battery. Sap it lock its less the weight of a tool box and it may be maintained in limited sopace such as a gan box taking up very little space as well protecting it from the enviroment dirt grease etc. Good choise ... A must have...
I got this saw in one of the multi kits.I never anticpated it coming in as useful as it has.I have used it as much as any other tool.The cordless aplication makes it the first tool I pick up when I need to quickly cut through something, anything actually.I have used numerous other manufacturers corded rip saws and I do not think they have anything over the dewalt 18 volt.

My New Favorite Tool
When I reach for a reciprocating saw it's usually to make one or two quick cuts, the last thing I want to do is have to look around for an unused cord (they are usually tangled or already in use). My new favorite tool is the DeWalt cordless 18 volt recip saw.I like the instant stopping feature, especially when exiting a cut. It has plenty of power and it's light. What more could you want? :-) I now have three DeWalt 18 volt cordless tools and they are the most "reached for" tools on the job.
